Gauthier Soho in City of London, Westminster

We were looking forward to dining at Gauthier Soho, but the experience fell short of expectations. While the restaurant is known for its vegan fine dining, the food lacked creativity and depth. The flavors were mostly uninspiring, and the set menu format made the evening feel mechanical rather than special—more like a production line than an intimate dining experience. Nothing stood out as refined, joyful, or memorable. Beyond the food, the service and ambiance were underwhelming. The welcome at the entrance was indifferent—no warmth or personal touch—and retrieving our coats at the end was chaotic. The setting itself also needs an upgrade: the ground-floor carpet was worn and dirty, the dining chairs’ upholstery looked dated, the dinnerware was surprisingly basic, and even the toilets could have been cleaner. There was nothing elegant or sophisticated about the overall experience. We also did not see Chef Alexis Gauthier that night, and perhaps that absence was reflected in the lack of personal or creative flair. That being said, we fully support the restaurant’s vegan vision and appreciate efforts to bring plant-based fine dining to a wider audience. However, there are many better options in London—both in terms of quality and price. We paid £300 for two people, and that didn’t even include a drink pairing. At this price point, we expected a far more refined and memorable experience. To top it off, we were surprised to receive a note with the bill encouraging us to write a review immediately in exchange for a “gift” from the restaurant. This felt very transactional—as if we were being nudged to say something positive for a reward. It left us with the impression of a business mindset rather than a place truly focused on hospitality and guest experience. Unfortunately, we wouldn’t recommend Gauthier Soho, as it neither delivered on culinary innovation nor provided a setting worthy of its reputation. Finally, the presentation by the owner on Google is truly misleading (we found out after our dinner): "Having earned a star within a year of opening Gauthier Soho, Alexis Gauthier is described by Zagat guide as "...one of the Best New French food destinations in London...". The fact is that Gauthier Soho earned its first Michelin star in 2011 but LOST it in 2013. Currently, the restaurant does NOT hold a star in the Michelin guide.

The servers were professional and helpful and the meal took place within a really reasonable time (bear in mind the meal was 10 courses in total). Would highly recommend!

Had a delicious and indulgent classic ‘petit dîner’. It was our second visit and we were equally delighted and impressed by the novel and tasty dishes. The non-alcoholic pairing is also brilliant. Best of all, it’s vegan!

One of the most stunning culinary experiences I’ve ever had the pleasure of taking part in. The breathtaking quality of the food is surpassed only by the spectacular level of service we received. For anyone living or visiting in London, this is not to be missed!

A starred vegan dinner, which is not easy to find. During a few days in the city we took advantage of it. A place in Soho which is quite anonymous from the outside, with friendly welcoming staff, we sat down in a room which turned out to be a little too noisy due to a nearby table being a little crowded. Menu with various entrees, above all a very crumbly brioches that can be spread all over in your hand. Generally delicate dishes with a French touch but not banal. Only the ravioli with pumpkin filling is worth seeing again, it's too difficult not to make a comparison with the Mantuan tradition... Satisfactory wine pairing without peaks. Overall satisfied. Medium-high q/p ratio (around 200 pounds each with 2 winter menus, 1 large wine pairing and 1 cocktail). Must try.

A lovely experience! The waiting staff, surroundings, the whole ambience of the place is so warm, welcoming and cosy. We had a lovely table for two facing the open fire. I thought two hours was a generous and appropriate time slot for a brilliantly thought out menu, with delicious and beautifully presented taster dishes. We had the ‘Petit Dinner’ with five courses plus a couple of additional tasters of a consommé served with a cute mushroom filled pastry and we also had a clementine sorbet palate cleanser. The waiters explained all the dishes individually and were attentive yet discreet at the same time. We went for an anniversary meal and there was the extra touch of this lettering in chocolate on our dessert plates - the ladies opposite, had the same treatment with Happy Birthday written on the birthday girl’s plate ;) Waiters were friendly and knowledgeable. Best vegan restaurant I’ve been to so far! Love this place! ❤️

We couldn't have made a better choice for our wedding anniversary. The whole meal was absolutely delicious, each dish was a bomb of flavor in the mouth, the wines recommended to us accompanied each plate wonderfully, it was a fabulous experience! Additionally, the waitresses were pleasant and we chatted a lot. The chef even did us the honor of coming to meet us at the table, in short, nothing but positives, I really want to come back to London just to come and eat at chef Gauthier's restaurant!

From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed with warm, attentive service. The tasting menu was a 10/10 in creativity, with each dish beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The alcohol free cocktails were equally impressive, and complemented the dishes perfectly. They also adapted our menu to our gluten free requests with no issues whatsoever. This is a must-visit for anyone that appreciates good food and fine dining, whether you're vegan or not. This place is a true gem in the heart of Soho that redefines plant-based cuisine, offering a very different experience to what you can find elsewhere. They certainly proved plant-based dining can be luxurious, refined, and utterly delicious. I’ll definitely be returning soon!

Overall we really enjoyed our vegan dining experience at Gauthier Soho. The food was on the whole extremely good and tasty. However, we didn't appreciate having to ring and knock on the door about five times before we were let in, especially as it was a rainy day. We were also told that one couple couldn't share a flight of wine. We've been to many other high-end restaurants for tasting menus and having a half flight has never been an issue before. The sommelier was superb and provided an excellent service with good explanations of both the food and the wine. However, the other waiting staff could have done better. Nevertheless, as a vegan, I recommend this restaurant and the tasting menus. It would just be preferable if Gauthier Soho could improve on the above issues to make the entire experience amazing.

I have dined at this restaurant multiple times, but strangely, I have never once been recognized as a returning guest. Each time, I am asked if it is my first visit, which feels impersonal, especially at a restaurant in this price range. I used to visit before Covid, and was curious to see how the transition to a fully vegan menu had evolved. Some dishes were enjoyable, and the effort is commendable, considering there’s no diary or other animal ingredients. However, others felt far too minimalistic to be considered a proper main course. A swede, for example, is an inexpensive ingredient—if it is the star of the dish, I would expect a more generous portion rather than it being rationed as though it were wagyu beef. Service was another point of concern. When we were handed the Grand Dîner menu and asked instead for the Petit Dîner, the waiter’s reaction made it seem as if this option didn’t even exist, despite it clearly being available. This was surprising. In the past, the restaurant had a team of well-trained French and Italian staff who could eloquently explain the dishes in multiple languages. This time, I struggled to fully understand what was being presented at the table. The absence of a sommelier was also noticeable; there used to be an excellent Italian sommelier who added to the experience. The physical state of the restaurant is another issue. The staircase beneath the carpet is worryingly squeaky and feels as if it may soon require urgent refurbishment. As for the meal itself, I enjoyed parts of it, but certain choices were puzzling. Starting with an amuse-bouche heavy on cumin meant that the spice lingered on my palate throughout the entire lunch. To then find cumin again in another dish felt repetitive and out of place, I expected a French dining experience, not one leaning toward Indian flavours. Overall, while I appreciate the restaurant’s commitment to its new direction, there are clear areas that need improvement.

We’ve now experienced all 4 seasons and each one has been fantastic. The food, wines and service never let us down. Another fabulous dining experience!

We had a truly unforgettable experience at gauthier - couldn’t recommend it more highly especially for celebrating an occasion in style! Each dish is clearly so well thought out and the drinks pairing was wonderful - there is also a soft drink pairing with very creative flavours which has to be tried in addition to the wine. All the staff were amazingly attentive and immediately made us feel comfortable - a big thanks in particular to Kyria and Joanna for their fantastic service which made our night truly special! Will definitely return!

We enjoyed the Classic Petit Dinner 5 course Winter menu. Each and every course was beautifully presented and full of flavour. Some seriously great cooking. Service was warm, friendly and informative. Lovely dining room. A great experience in Soho. Awesome value. Highly recommended.

If you are not vegan then it is hard to justify going to this restaurant. The tasting menu is the only option and it is £95.00. If you want non alcoholic pairings that's another £45. If you want alcoholic pairings that's another £75. I opted for a pineapple fizz non alcoholic drink which was £12. Not worth it. There are so many courses and 50% are not great. The best one was carrot with truffle sauce. That came with one carrot!!! I couldn't eat two the courses as I didn't like them at all. The main course was sweet potatoes with spinach and vegan gravy. The gravy was not very nice at all. The highlight was the desserts which didn't lack flavour by being vegan. There were three small desserts and then a main dessert. I wouldn't go back but if you are a vegan it is a nice experience. Our bill was £244 and we had one still water, one coke and one pineapple fizz to drink.

Family supper for 4: superb vegan tasting menu with excellently paired wines, imaginative, beautifully cooked and presented in an unpretentious but lovely / elegant town house over three floors (so each room is not crowded). Excellent service from professional but friendly, welcoming, knowledgeable and passionate staff. Three of us are not actually vegan but all of us thought it was amazing: two of us had been once previously for the earlier, shorter menu and all of us would / will go again. Cheap, no; worth it, yes - it’s pretty special !!

If you are vegetarian and want to book an expensive restaurant with Vegan 10 course taster menu after 730pm then this might be the place for you. The customer service is pretty good, I changed my booking time on the telephone with them 3 times and they were fine about it. The restaurant is right bang in the middle of Soho, you wouldn't think that inside as its super quiet. Its actually an old house, on arrival it felt like we were showing up at a house party, apart from the fact we were greeted at the door by a waitress. The decor is nice but not my taste, its modern zesty colours, lots of yellow. Upstairs the dining room was very quiet, we would have appreciated music playing in the background (if there was it was too quiet). The waiting staff were friendly and informative. The food was super nice, I don't remember tasting a dish that I didn't like. Our meal for two with 2 glasses of red wine and few bottles of water cost £250. It was a really nice experience, however neither the food nor the ambience was WOW, which I would expect at this price. I wouldn't dine here again as I am sure there are better places in this price bracket. I imagine its a good place to dine before Theatre evenings, their pre-theatre menu is 5 courses and probably £120 for two, much more reasonable. All in all a good experience but don't expect miracles here.

This was a fabulously enlightening vegan menu, very skilfully created dishes, everything delicious. Really enjoyed everything. Only stars dropped for: it being an old building conversation so a) having no waiting space and not being clear at booking that turning up early (even a few minutes) is a bad idea because you'll have to leave and come back b) sitting near a window for 4 hours meant I was absolutely freezing by the end as it was about -2 out that day. Also, almost everyone who arrived after us left before us, I felt like I waited for the check/payment for so long - the cold may have contributed here! Otherwise service was great, everyone friendly and helpful. I felt bad I couldn't finish the dessert, which was delicious, but SO rich and large and at course 10/10, it was never going to work! Definitely not a winter restaurant I don't think, otherwise would consider trying a new menu in future.

I am not actually vegan but my wife is and this was a fantastic option for her birthday. It's fine dining but relaxed and the staff are so well informed about all the choices on the menus. We had a lovely time and would certainly go back to see what other gastronomic masterpieces they come up with in future. It's not necessarily cheap as it's a set menu, but we had ten courses (if I counted correctly) of varying sizes and were extremely full by the end and I would say that it is very good value for the level of food and service provided. The brioche course was a particular highlight for me - as someone who doesn't live mushrooms it perhaps opened my eyes a little. Even Swede gets it's moment to shine.

The chef is excellent in making perfect sauces. My favorite is the pasta with mushrooms sauce and the pear martini. I’m a strong supporter of cruelty free restaurants and products. They do it so well and deliver a msg that quality doesn’t compromise when you insist on value. PS. The kelp carvier is excellent too. I can’t tell it’s vegan!!

We decided to celebrate our daughters 30th birthday and we were not disappointed. We were shown to a private dinning room - albeit this may be the norm in the restaurant - so we’re able to enjoy our conversation unlike in many restaurants these days where the noise is excessive. We had the Christmas tasting menu with two glasses of wine (or non alcoholic equivalent). The menu was inventive and showed off the skills of the chefs - clever cooking, without trying to simulate a meat menu (not a faux burger in sight!). The service was also excellent with the servers demonstrating their knowledge of each dish - just as it should be at this level of cooking. It is without doubt the best vegan meal we have had so far (and we have tried lots of vegan food since our daughter turned vegan several years ago). Undoubtedly fine dining, and listed in the Michelin guide, albeit not yet starred. Nevertheless on our experience the 1 star cannot be far away…..

Lots of admiration and respect for what Gauthier does. It’s amazing that all of this is vegan, thank you for the delicious meal, warm ambiance and lovely service.

We were gifted a voucher towards a dinner. The food and hospitality was excellent. The ambiance was nice as it was an intimate dining room which was a nice change.

Intimate with a warm and welcoming atmosphere, just the swap of repetitive muzac for something else could improve it. The petit menu wasn't available on our visit, but the ten course offered lots of different flavours, which made the occasion more special. My thanks to the entire restaurant team, for handling two food intolerances well.
