Gatsby in Sunderland

At 1:55 I was on the balcony smoking a cigarette when a member of the security staff took my jacket and my girlfriend's jacket from the upper to the lower floor even though my girlfriend came for only seconds to call me to leave . We asked the DJ if he has seen something, as we left our jackets next to the DJ booth. He confirmed that one of the staff members took them down. When we got down we started asking everyone, they guaranteed that they looked everywhere and for a whole hour we were suffering and literally searching everywhere and we asked the whole team and no one wanted to help and some of them rudely said come back in the morning. For us it was not an option as our home keys were inside the jacket. When I went back upstairs to talk to one of the managers, the bartender brought a security guard to kick me out as if I was there just to cause trouble. I went there just to get the jacket back, which I was sure wasn't stolen from the attendees, but from the staff. The strange thing is that for a whole hour we couldn't find it. Only then did the manager named John returned the jackets. Instead of an apology, the entrance security verbally insulted me, pushed me unnecessarily even though I was keeping the distance and talking to him calmly. He spoke to me arrogantly in front of the manager and my girlfriend. The two other guards were rude as well.

Horrible place, terrible experience, especially if you are not from the area. Horrible staff. Not recommended!!! Avoid this place at any costs. We went there yesterday with my boyfriend and wanted to stay a short time, have some drinks, listen to the music and go home. We went to the second floor. All the time we were having fun calmly, just sitting next to the DJ booth and enjoying the evening. We danced a bit on our own, not interacting with anyone, just enjoying the night. Then my boyfriend went to smoke a last cigarette to the balcony, right before the upper floor was going to shut down. I followed him literally for 20 seconds to tell him to hurry up, and then I came back and saw that our jackets were taken. They were not on the sofa next to the DJ booth where we left them. We started to look for the jackets immediately. All the people started to leave as the lights were already on and the music stopped. We started asking everyone if they have seen something and the DJ and some of the attendees confirmed that they saw one of the staff members taking our jackets downstairs. Then we were talking to ALL the staff members and asking for help. We were acting calmly and we explained our situation thoroughly to everyone. Many of the staff members were pretending they do know nothing about it and were not willing to help much. They claimed that it’s a typical situation and there is a low chance to get the jackets back. They mentioned that the best if we come in the morning. We kept looking for the jackets everywhere and trying to speak with the staff members. We told them that it’s crucial for us to have the jackets back as even our home key was inside of one of the pockets. We spent around an hour looking for the jackets and trying to find out where they could be. We went back to the exit/entrance again and wanted to speak again with the security as our last hope. One of them got really angry, started to shout by telling us ‘It the fiftieth time you are asking, we don’t know where are your f*cking jackets’ and telling more rude words. He was very arrogant and pushed my boyfriend while my boyfriend was behaving calmly. We were sober and did not want to cause any trouble. Then the manager of the place, John, appeared and gave us the jackets back. We thanked him and left, although the other guards were still talking rude to us and even making fun of the situation. I do not recommend going to Gatsby at all. It is worth to mention that we are foreigners and we call this whole experience a nightmare. The staff were rude and racist. Only a few people from the staff were willing to help, however the majority of them just wanted us to leave and save our jackets to themselves. It is also important to mention that the jackets were from a well known expensive brand. Shame!!!

Came in for Sunday dinner today, and as a regular customer I must say I was very disappointed. Before the refurbishment the prices and food quality were excellent, but after today's visit I dont think I will be coming back for another Sunday dinner. The beef was really chewy and gristly and the roast potatoes were hard. I don't expect to pay more for the quality to be as bad as it was today, especially when I know you can do better.

We were a party of 9 all ordered meals with fat chips only to be told after ordering and paying there none were available and would we have thin chips no other options, when the meal arrived with the chips were over cooked and hard, the flat bread was under cooked and doughy, the chicken curry was watery, as was the indian curry, I could add more, a big disappointment, will not go again

Not great had pan seared chicken which was just about warm. Not much taste to it. Service OK. Table had not been cleaned. Not a great place to eat.

I ordered drinks and got given a dirty glass with food on it,asked for a clean one and got refused by the manager and told its watermarks. When i took a closer look its gor a crack in it and was told its fine. Shocking service from the manager. Ill not be coming here again

What a great place, drinks and meals great and friendly atmosphere we have dined here several times and have always left well pleased.

Rubbish service. Loud-mouthed waitress asked "Do you want anything?" and when I asked for the breakfast, she just put a menu on the table and walked away. Ordered breakfast to a waiter, who then went to the bar and shouted over to me to remind him if I wanted the small or large. Whole bar and customers looked at me. Asked for no tomatoes...came with tomatoes. When another waiter cleared the table and asked if everything was okay, I said "Other than I asked for no tomatoes, it was good." His reply: "Oh right." No apology or anything. Think I'll stay clear of here for food in future.

Me and my family had a Sunday carvery, wow it was absolutely beautiful, good portion, very clean and sanitizer as you went in with track and trace , felt very safe and staff were great also would definitely recommend.

Great breakfast served hot and by a pleasant waitress will definately recommend the meals. Gatsby special breakfast. spotlessly clean dining areas

Went to Gatsby yesterday totally expecting to be turned away with the ‘eat out to help out’ deal on. Someone came to see us at the door and told us we could have a table straight away, just had to leave our pushchairs near the front where there was space which isn’t a problem. Brought us over a highchair prompt for the baby. Ordered at the bar and waited about half an hour for food. Came to £16.60 for 2 kids meals - 1 with ice cream and fruit shoot, 2 adult meals and 2 large cokes with the 50% off. The kids meals were beautiful. Home made chips, pizza was clearly home made and was delicious, chicken nuggets were proper chicken very nice. I had lasagne which came with garlic bread and chips but am greedy so ordered onion rings aswell all was lovely. Partner had the pepperoni pizza which was really nice too. Decent size portions and really nice food. Forgot to take photos unfortunately 😂 Also just wanted to add how friendly and welcoming the member of staff was who dealt with us.

We had Chicken Diane and Chicken Parmesan with veg and great chunky chips - Price was silly cheap for what you got. The veg and chips were good. Staff friendly and helpful The chef must be awesome!!!!

Shared hot beef sandwich with roast potatoes with my partner. Absolutely lovely beef in Sandwich and roasties were lovely

Popped in here to grab something to eat while feeding my son. Ordered a beef roast dinner, the beef wasn’t the best but for £6.95 ya can’t complain. Staff was very friendly

I have been going in gatsby's for lunch for quite some time now and I have never had any problems with there food and I am a very fussy eater, if their is something you don't like on a certain meal all you have to do is say and they will leave it off. The staff are so friendly and are always on hand to help if you need anything. I must admit I have never been in on a Christmas time for something to eat so I can't comment on others experiences. All I can comment on is my own and to the staff and chef I say thanks and keep up the good work

When trying to order, they couldn't tell us what was in the food. I wanted a hot beef sandwich and I have a serious egg allergy, and although rare, I know bread can sometimes contain egg. We were told that they order their bread in and so they didn't know if it contained any allergens. This is against the law and has been for over a year now. Anywhere selling food has to know if their food contains any of a list of common food allergies, egg being one of them.

Went to gasbys today for food it was fantastic but let down by cleaness no toilet roll in disabled toilet and glass still on floor off last night under the table

Went to Gatsby’s looking forward to their Xmas Turkey lunch. We usually enjoy the food but today we were very, very disappointed. We sat at a table where the previous occupants had left most of their food so it should have been a warning. Sadly It was mediocre to say the least. Asked for mint sauce but we were nearly finished when it came. Food was very poor and did cost more than they usually charge. Sorry Gatsby, must do better.

The food is always hot and enjoyable staff helpful and friendly always find it clean I go once a week with friends and we never go anywhere else to eat

My boyfriend and I checked this place out since we were visiting his family. Cool bar downstairs, super chill and then when you go up there’s other rooms with dancing. ‘Twas a fun night out.

We went here during a shopping trip to Sunderland. It’s a lovely, comfortable place, with friendly, efficient and helpful staff. We enjoyed a delicious and plentiful lunch from their specials menu for approx £9 each with a drink. It’s very conveniently situated in the main shopping area too. Looking forward to our next visit soon.

Si estás en la ciudad, no puedes equivocarte yendo a Gatsbys para comer, la comida y la porción de valor si inigualable como es el servicio y la bienvenida recibirá de todo el personal. Recomiendo encarecidamente este honesto pub.

We arrived at lunch time no seats downstairs left so we easily found a seat upstairs. Ordered drinks and food at the same time. Food took about 15-20 minutes to come. One plain burger we asked for still came with salad, no a problem was easily taken off. The combo burger that was meant to have bacon and cheese on came without bacon. And the 3rd meal was beef sandwich with gravy. Beef was very tough. The homemade chips were the best thing out of the 3 meals.

Go there most match days prior to the match, don't see any trouble and reasonable prices, perfect location to start your bar crawl.

I have visited a couple of times for food but not in the last year or so as last time it wasn't very nice. A couple of people had mentioned menu had changed so thought would try it. Sister and I ordered. My sisters came with sweet potato fries which they had asked her fries or chips, no mention of sweet potato fries. She did go up and mention this and it was rectified. I got myself and my son fries with our meals. My fries were luke warm at best. I do think for the price the food was crap processed...oven chips. Plenty of places in town that do fresh, homemade chips and meals for cheaper! Cafe 18 is round the corner for example better food, better value, friendlier staff! Won't be back anytime soon

Been 3 times now for food and been very good each time, burgers have been the stand out meal each time, good selection of drinks and stylish relaxed atmosphere inside.

dunno if it was me just been fussy but my last few meals here was absolutely horrible. chunky chips were vile and the fish was near enough uneatable. the batter was rock hard and was so hard to actually eat the fish inside!!

The place looks great from the outside, and great on the inside. However, there is a very strong smell of cooking fish, probably from the fish shop next door. Fairly good selection of beers and a good set up, if you can get past the fish shop smell you'll enjoy it

Well i visited gatsby's on the 23/04/2016. As i was walking upto the bar i could smell a stong smell of urine, when was at the bar i was then told that i will not be getting served as they have a strict no joggers policy (i understand the no joggers policy for on a night but this was 11.00am) the reason i was wearing joggers was that i had not long had an operation and felt more comfortable in joggers. I did not get a chance to explain to the bar staff. I then travelled over the road to port of call explained my situation they were happy to help.

Went here for lunch after Port of Call opposite was heaving with foottie supporters watching Sunderland play; owned by the same people, Gatsby had no large screen TVs and this seemed to be the one of the reasons that it was sadly 3/4 empty; nice decor, decent beers, and the fish and chips we had arrived quickly and were delicious. More of a bar meal menu than the fine fayre on offer at Port of Call, but still well worth a visit. My only criticism today is that the TVs were maybe a smidge loud-but maybe that's just me turning cantankerous in my old age :-(Worth a look :-)

Decided to have breakfast in this place. Out came the tray with the tea,s on it, filthy stained and full of something i could not decypher, Then the breakfast, TERRIBLE, burnt bacon, burned mushrooms, sloppy poached egg and burnt sausage. Tea was luke warm. NEVER AGAIN, absolute rubbish

attended this establishment 8th Jan 2016 just for drinks ordered a Jd n coke and a malibu n coke (doubles) to be told £18, upon querying the price the barmaid then added the second shot which she had not put in and changed the price to £8, so BEWARE thieving staff.

Came in gatsbys for a breakfast the other morning with a friend and her child, we ordered the full english and could not fault the breakfast although the atmosphere was terrible felt uncomfortable the full time as at 10am in the morning there was men drinking pints which is not a nice thing for a young child to see, although I know it can't be helped by the business

Went in on a tues night which is gay night in sunderland town..made to feel welcome even with a scottish accent lol. Dj more than happy to have pic taken with me..guy had legs that went on forever (very envious) ..only bad point was the smell of fish as your going upstairs to the loo..apparently its from the chippy next door..but to a stranger they would imagine it was from the toilets

nice reasonable drinks but stinks of the fish shop next door. get a lot of chavs in this pub. nice outside area for the summer.

Went here for some food, the price was reasonable, the service was fantastic and the food was truly amazing, the chips are the best by far, better than any I've tasted before definitely 10/10.

Visited today after work, the bar was busy but there was plenty of free tables. The atmosphere was relaxed, we ordered food & it arrived after 20 mins. I think we were both shocked at how good the food was, my partner had the steak & I ordered the stuffed chicken they both came with homemade chips. There's plenty of choice on the menu, kids are welcome as well. Will definitely return

Haven seen a negative review on here I felt obliged to leave one myself I have visited your pub/bistro recently with my partner we both ate from the specials menu , we decided on chicken amd prawns I had a diet coke and my partner a tea which I was told came with a free refil which was appreciated , the meals arrived within 10 minutes which I thought was quick they looked amazing and as described chicken breast and juicy prawns Iin a garlic cream sauce with home made chips they were great a real treat as many places only offer frozen chips I paid just over £15 which was great , the service we recieved was good and overall I can say your doing a great job well done gatsby

We visit Gatsby quite regularly, if were going shopping on the day or out on the night with friends Gatsby always has something to offer. Be it the restaurant standard of food on an afternoon, or the beautifully presented cocktails that my partner loves so much on an evening, Gatsby is a must on your Sunderland check list. In all my visits I have never been disappointed by the standards, service, or most importantly the cost. If your in Sunderland for any reason, i highly recommend this venue.

We were 4 adults I ordered jacket potato tuna mayo which was very sloppy salad dry and dated. My uncle ordered beef dip n chips chips were raw but he managed to eat a few aunt and cousin ordered chicken gougons wrap with chilli n garlic sauce a very small wrap came out with cheap tiny pieces of dry chicken not breast no sauce chips were raw and very hard absolute disgrace to serve. Complained and was told they don't do chicken gougons anymore we were expecting chicken with breadcrumbs as stated on menu so reordered a different wrap and again very poor chips hard and uncooked watery sloppy wrap little sauce or meat we didn't complain this time just left the food we won't be returning we are regulars and usually love the food but now it's a different menu different chef who obviously can't cook ! The waiter asked when clearing the plates any better I said no just as bad chips still raw and poor meals he just laughed embarrassed and walked away we then left what a shambles of a place now :(

I had lunch here with a friend today. We both ordered Salmon and Prawns, with a side order of chips. The food arrived within ten minutes. The salmon was poached and came with prawns and a creamy garlic sauce, it was absolutely delicious - very light but filling. The chips were home made and incredibly tasty.I would highly recommend Gatsby's - this was the first time I've been, but I will definitely be back. The service also deserves a mention - friendly and prompt. There's nothing worse than sitting with your empty plates and glasses in front of you and the staff were nice and quick off the mark to get the table cleared. Well done and thank you Gatsby's!

Great pub to watch the fooball on, loads of big screens and telly's, free food at half time. Beer good lovely spirits/mixers, slightly more expensive compared to other bars near but it is a good all rounder and the owner is lovely.

Did not realise it had refurb , tastefully done . My husband ordered Viking gammon absolutely faultless I had fish and chips the same quality. The second time we went which was day after I had Hong Kong chicken and my husband had beef cobbler the food is absolutely delicious and the prices are really reasonable whoever is cooking the food well done your a star . And to the owners and bar staff well done you are all doing a grand job and no doubt I will be returning . Go taste the food you'll not be disappointed x

My wife & myself popped into here on Father`s Day & had a roast beef Sunday lunch. We only had the small plate version which was ample for both of us. For the price we paid & including 2 drinks it was well worth the money. Meal not great but still enjoyable & would consider returning.

Have eaten here many times over the past year and I have to say I'm consistantly impressed. Usually there is something on the weekly specials board for me but if not there is plenty of variety on a considered main menu. Great value and service make daytime dining in Gatsby a must when visiting the city centre.
