Gate of India in Cheshire West and Chester

We were pushed and hurried throughout this meal by sullen waiters who didn't seem to want our custom. We were a family party of nine, and spent a fair amount of money for poor quality food. The meat was tough and overcooked whilst the onions (and there were sooo many) were all very undercooked. To add insult to injury, they asked us to leave before we had finished our drinks before rescinding our red card when I protested. A disappointing meal in every way: we certainly won't be back.

Great food and a very warm welcome.Very clean and very polite staff.Excellent choice on the menu. It was recommended by Annie at our Travel lodge and was not disappointed.I highly recommend The Gate OF India

Possibly the best Indian that I have had in years. Ordered a takeaway away for new year's eve, the restaurant was full but they fitted me in & the food was ready in 40 mins. Great portion size, good flavours & the king prawns were awesome. Next time will book to eat at the restaurant.

Lovely food very pleasant service The onion bhaji were delicious but very big. One between two would have been ample. My curry was lovely, said it was slightly hot and ot was. I recommend this

Food wasn’t worth what I paid, felt like I’ve been completely ripped off

I cannot remember when we’ve ever been served a meal as dreadful as this, either in this country or abroad. Tasteless chicken sag, made without spices, just chicken bits and sag boiled together. Cold naan, over salted and greasy biriani, but the best (?) part was the veg curry, simply a watery liquid without any vegetables, just a few strands of onion in it. It tasted of a raw vegetable stock cube. The waiter refused to taste it, saying he could see how bad it was. The meal was disgusting with no redeeming features.

I can't rate the food as we never got to eat. Booked a table for 8pm on Saturday for four people. Arrived and initially couldn't get in as access was blocked by a group of men trying to get a table. The place was full, but the men kindly let us to the front as we had booked. "You have a booking" to which we said yes m for four. No name was checked. He went away and we saw a table being sorted, but this was not for us but for a party of two who had been waiting in the microscopic bar area. He returned "You have a booking" as you can imagine we answered a little more tersely " Yes you just asked us that. We were led to the bar area and told it would ten minutes. Looking around we knew this was totally untrue, a large party had not been even served drinks, and the other tables no one was past a starter. I went to the Japanese/Thai restaurant opposite and was told I could have a table in five minutes even though WE HAD NOT BOOKED. By the time icam back, retrieved my party and crossed the road, our table was ready. A really sad and disappointing experience.

Absolute slap up curry house with all the trimmings. Properjob bang-tidy poppadoms and chutneys - off the chain! with cracking curry and top shelf naans. Recommended! No jacket required. Five stars.

My favourite indian restaurant in chester, great food and service.

Literally came out of the Premier Inn across the road and fell into The Gate of India. What a great restaurant. Good service, great choice of dishes, which were very tasty. Would recommend a visit when in Chester.

We were not impressed at all with this restaurant. The food was not the best quality , not once did any staff ask us how our food was , they hovered over us and we felt intimidated. We wouldn’t recommend this restaurant

The Gate Of India always holds A special place in my heart the food is and always has been the best in chester for many many years. The service was delightful and the kids enjoyed themselfs very much thank you. 10/10

We have been coming nearly once a week for the past few months. The food is amazing, changed our order each time and always had nothing but faultless food. The service is great, and I couldn’t recommend it enough .

Worst curry ever had was like water. Chicken was not in chunks. Was like came off skewers and sliced. Revolting never again. Waiters so rude in a hurry to empty table while your still seated and eating. 0/10

Been dining here for years and nothings really changed in all that time. Still a good experience and busy restaurant. Had the onion bhaji followed by tandoori chicken on the bone.

Had a fantastic curry, amazing flavours. Excellent service, highly recommend 👌

We were warmly greeted on arrival and soon shown to a table. Poppadoms and pickles were great. Mixed kebabs likewise. Chicken Pasanda, Lamb Jalfrezi and Saag Aloo all excellent. The chicken Ceylon was an out of body experience! Biriyani let the side down a bit, dry and tasteless. Overall a great meal washed down with draught Cobra which was perfect. Service very attentive and friendly. Excellent ambience with Indian music to complete the feel. Definitely recommend. Glad we ignored the recent one-star reviews which appeared to be written out of spite.

Good Indian food and nice atmosphere. In the middle of city with plenty of choices. I was there for dinner and enjoyed the food and prices were ok.

The Chicken tikka passanda and the Sag chicken tikka korai were AMAZING. Top it up with a nan and a porota and you'll leave the happiest person.

Great food and the Staff were all excellent. Managed to find us a table at short notice. Well worth a visit if you are in Chester. We have just had dinner here a year after our first visit. Service polite and lightning fast. Food quality absolutely superb. Not to be missed.

Immediately after we sat down at our table, we were rushed by our waiter, with making our choices. Shortly after, our starters/mains arrived simultaneously, again, with the intention of rushing through our dining experience. We asked for out mains to be taken away, so we could enjoy our starters. As soon as our starters were finished, our reheated mains arrived, again with the clear intent to rush us through our meal. Several times prior to our food being served, we clearly stated that we would pay for our drinks and leave if they wanted to close, but we're told that this wasn't the case. Whilst eating our food, the waiting staff began hoovering around tables close by again making us feel rushed. Just a terrible dining experience.. We have previously dined here many times, but after being treated this way, never again.

Had a dreadful experience. Rude staff who after taking our order, rushed the food out both starters and mains at the same time. Food seemed reheated. Clearly wanted to rush us, started hoovering around our table and it was only 10.30pm. Didn't want to complain asknow knows what they would do to our food as we sent the mains back until we had finished our starters. Avoid this place .

Fantastic authentic food, great staff and not to busy.

We were staying just round the corner for the weekend and this place was in walking distance. I had booked a table and we duly headed in at the allotted time. The restaurant is like going back in time, tables crammed together with wipe clean plastic tablecloths , flock wallpaper and tinny music playing. We were taken to the upstairs room ,seated and given menus then a waiter told us we had to be out in an hour as there was a big party coming in. We had a back and forth then he disappeared and came back and said as we had booked we could go back downstairs and there was no time limit. While this was going on two tables by us were seated , given drinks and their order was taken. After 25 minutes we were taken back downstairs where we sat down and our food arrived, it was pretty dire in all honesty. The 70's feel extended to the food too, dry overcooked chicken and bland tasteless sauce. Coming from an area blessed with an abundance of incredible Indian restaurants we were thoroughly disappointed with the whole evening.

The Restaurant kindly accommodated us last Friday (very late in the evening). Top service, top food.

Must be 30 years since I got a takeaway away when resident thought it be all changed. Still top big portions and spicy as described.

The food tasted good, although the menu was large it was restricted to the regular dishes with not many recommendations. I opted for Murgi Massala, off the Special Curry Dishes section. I regret to say that for the last 2 days I have suffered with food poisoning attributed to this dish. Avoid!

Been to this restaurant on numerous occasions never had a problem staff are fantastic food is delicious I would and have recommended this restaurant to friends and family and they have loved it not sure where the negative feedbacks have come from as I have already said it’s a wonderful restaurant with lovely friendly staff my advice would be to book in advance as it’s always very busy.

Went without booking on a Thursday night. The food we had was so tasty, the mixed kebab starter is the nicest starter I’ve had. The pickle tray for poppadums has a huge variety of dips and pickles. Portions are generous and food was flavoursome. Service was very attentive. I don’t understand the negative reviews. One of the best Indians I’ve been to and I’ve been to a fair few. Can’t wait to return.

Nice looking restaurant with private booths but really lacklustre food. Had the Baltic which tasted like gravy with HP sauce. Won't be back

Arrived with my wife and the place was very busy. Ordered and food arrived quite promptly. That was the best of it. My chicken tikka madras was a lot spicier that it should have been and absolutely tasteless. My wife's chicken tikka balti also had no taste. When asked by staff " how was the food?" I explained as above but no response, the waiter just walked away. It was our first visit but the table next to us had been before and told staff that their food " wasn't up to par" . Again no redress from staff. I know they were busy but food standards should be maintained. Very disappointing.

Service was OK ish passed very hot dishes over our heads, felt rushed,food was poor been all over uk eating in Indian restaurant and this is in the bottom pathia is a authentic sweet and spice dish tasted like salty tomato purie, chicken tikka masala like the pathia ,4 meals 1 OK nann bread and rice nicest things, wouldn't recommend at all

I’ve given 1 star for service,rushing courses, was given the bill and we were still having drinks. More or less thrown out. Shocking

This is not authentic Indian restaurant, food tastes is horrible (compare to authentic Indian food). There is no difference betwenn starter and main course curry (same gravy being used across the range). My colleague ordered chicken and it was not fresh.

Disappointing meal this time. Not sure if there was a change of chef Saturday 10th feb. Both main meals lacked flavour and substance. Been several times in the past and no problems at all. Won’t be going back I’m afraid. Service was great though but that’s not enough if the food is not up to par.

Had high expectations having read the reviews and were initially impressed by the atmosphere in this busy restaurant which is usually a good sign. Whilst service was quick and staff pleasant, the food was very poor and one of the party had an upset stomach soon after. The chicken was dry and chewy and the sauces flavourless. We left disappointed and won't be returning. Sorry!

One of the best Indian curry houses in Chester

Ate here whilst staying at the premier inn. Fantastic food and service. Would recommend to anyone visiting chester to give this place a try.

Went here last year with my husband staff extremely rude followed a lady outside whilst she had a cigarette and the staff member quizzing her about being outside even though her husband was still inside waiting for the bill, the lady was clearly upset , myself and my sister came late on in the year and the manager did exactly the same with me followed me outside then followed me back in, made us feel really uncomfortable like we were going do a runner without paying i will never ever visit this restaurant again all i can say is if you smoke or vape do not go outside avoid the place

Enjoyed the meal, and it was reasonably priced. The service was a bit confused at times, so ended up waiting a lot whilst the waiters worked out the drinks orders. The food was good overall, however the pilau rice wasn't the best and the dessert, Peach Melba was misadvertised. In any recipe you'll ever see for this it mentions raspberry puree. So tinned peaches, ice cream and pouring cream isn't any version of that recipe! It has to be said that the curries and the starters were very good, well above the average.

The staff are very friendly, quick service and outstanding food. Been here a few times now and always outstanding. Great portion size and definitely value for money.

On arrival service was pleasant. Had soda water which was flat but then rectified with a bottle. The lamb passanda was very tough and sauce lacked spice. Chicken jalfrazi again lacked taste and spice. Was very underwhelmed. Favourite part was infact the poppadoms and accompaniments. I don't like reviewing negatively but as someone who makes curry regularly from scratch and love all the spices and work that goes into a curry I was dissapointed. The ambience was nice however the food really did lack. I feel this is more somewhere to go after a few beers.

What an amazing little place. We were seated in a lovely little booth, had the most amazing food, and surrounded by lovely staff. Such a great atmosphere. Will definitely come back.

For a popular place was highly disappointed . The seekh kebab starter was very average , however the mains of prawn korai was a big portion but simply lacking in flavour and resulted in an upset stomach ….

Service was good and people were nice but the food isn't great at all, all the sauces looked the same and it just wasn't upto scratch compared to a lot of places we've been to

Finished off our weekend,staff very welcoming ,all the food we had from starters to mains were delivered to the table on time. I had lamb tikka karahi and woud recccomend it, absolutely loved it and plenty of it. My wife had the chicken jalfrezi . Can't fault everything about our visit and would definitely go on our next visit to Chester.

Service was ok but the food is simply terrible. I had Chicken Spinach Saag and it looked like some of those ready to eat Tesco chicken slices had been mixed in with some rancid out of date Spinach. I would avoid this place at all costs and I will never darken its doors again. Very poor chaps possibly time to consider another career?

Best Indian in Chester, gets very busy.

Had the lamb tkka Korai and my husband had chicken tikki chilli masala Koran. Both dishes were very tasty, thanks to the staff for reccomending them.

Very attentive and amazing staff who just wants you to have a lovely experience. Loads of food. Great value for money. Quality food. We asked for garlic rice which they don't have on menu and it was no problem. Definitely be returning. Thank you

Very pleasant welcoming and attentive staff When reading the menu we saw a few dishes we’d never heard of and I usually stick to what I know but I had the chicken tikka malanga which didn’t disappoint! It was full of flavours and just the right amount of spice . My bf had a dopiaza which was spicier than normal but very good flavours . Definitely be back

We had met up with friends who are local to the area and went here Latisha Saturday night. The staff were friendly and welcoming. A good menu lots to choose from. Food arrived promptly and was delicious. We all had a drink as well with our meals and were pleasantly surprised by the price, very reasonable. Will visit again if in Chester.

Have visited 3/4 times when I’m in Chester, usually for take away. Delicious food, great service. Hard to get decent Indian food - especially if you’ve lived in the Middle East but yummy review for indian gate. Thank you !!!

First visit and very impressed. Food was served quickly and of a good standard. Ambience of the restaurant was really nice and cosy. I found the constant pacing up and down of the waiters a little much but I understand they are just being attentive. I will be back but with the team so we can test it out with a large booking.

This is a lovely, small restaurant with attentive but unobtrusive staff. Very reasonably priced. Lots of meat, excellent keema naan and egg fried rice. It was lovely.

We both ate here 2 nights in a row, the first night was fine and the food was nothing special and if anything the Korma sauce was more like soup than your normal Korma sauce. The 2nd night we were sat in a booth opposite a party of 12 or so very very loud people who were constantly using obscene language of the worst kind, several times I almost got off my seat to say something and my partner thought is wise not to. The staff did nothing to ask them to refrain from swearing and shouting at the top of their voices. Other customers were also far from pleased. As for the food, the Korma I had on this 2nd night was even more soup than sauce. Tried to give them the benefit of the doubt on the 2nd night but wish we had goner elsewhere. Perhaps we were just unlucky both nights.

The worst Indian food we have ever had we are not from Chester but Leeds and the gate of India there is far better food. I can only think the one in Chester is not under the same chain as the one in Leeds

Stumbled across this place on a Friday night and it was packed. We had to wait for a table but we’re not disappointed. The restaurant is very authentic and lovely. The staff weee very attentive and the food was delicious

I would not recommend to eat here,I went with a group of 12 people the service was poor and rude, the food took so long to come and when it did it was bland,the kids asked for just chicken and chips they wouldn't do it,so they had to order something they did really want to eat,and will advise anybody who would want to go to pay towards the BILL at the end of the meal DO NOT DO IT,I went to pay some money in cash as the father in law was going to pay for the 12 of us I a1/3 of the bill in cash,only to find out the day later the father in law had paid the WHOLE BILL,and not MINUS why cash payment I went in the the day and asked where had my CASH PAYMENT TOWARDS THE Bill had gone and the replied to me saying my father in law the bill minus my payment which was a COMPLETE Lie, I argued with over this and 4 to 5 staff came out stood around me to INTIMIDATE ME, they basically ripped me of,SO ADVICE YOU TO ELSEWHERE

I dined here with colleagues on Tuesday evening; it was so good we came back the next night with three more colleagues making the group number 6. The food was excellent on both occasions. The staff were fantastic and took care of us all. Place was full, which is always a good indication.

Authentic Indian cuisine found in the heart of Chester. Tiny yet comfortable atmosphere for a great crafted Indian curry and I like particularly their Tandoori Chicken over the hotpot, the spices and tenderness of the grilled Chicken are just perfectly prepared. Rice and nans are charged extra. Recommended.

I was on my way back to the station from a Saturday afternoon in Chester city centre, and five minutes from the station I passed by this unassuming doorway to Gate of India. It was late afternoon and I was feeling somewhat peckish and took a look at the menu in the window. The vindaloo was labelled hot, together with a note to say for only seasoned diners who enjoy their hot food. This is in contrast to so many places where vindaloo has been toned down to not cause pain. They also had an option beyond vindaloo, labelled Ceylon, and a designation of extremely hot. I decided to pop in for dinner. The place is decked out in traditional decor, with some very practical red disposable top table cloths - I always hate dropping curry on a nice clean table cloth. I had a couple of poppadoms and vegetable samosas for starters. For the main, I was expecting fire, so decided on just the vindaloo. Lamb of course, with Bombay potato, a plain naan, and the fire extinguisher cucumber raita. The heat did not disappoint. I got that just dipping the pieces of naan into the gravy. I shall be back for the Ceylon soon (with lots of raita). Service was attentive and kept the drinks and food rolling over nicely. Diners around me were eating a variety of dishes and they all looked good. You will have a good meal here, trust me.

Proper Indian Ambience, food is tasty but expensive as per the portion size. Amazing staff.

This place will always be special to me and many others because of the great food and welcoming staff, they always serve a consistently tasty curry everytime. I recommend all of the curries on the Chef's recommendation list. 🤤
