Lovely GF fish and chips. Wait was 15 mins and I was told in advance and happy to wait as I was more comfortable it was GF. Would recommend

Best chip shop in Clacton. Great value and decent portion sizes. All take the time to talk to all customers and children.

Disgusted. We have been here many times over the years. And taken large groups with us. We were always pleased before. This time we had to wait about45 mins for our meal, even though there were only two other customers in the "restaurant" who had waited longer. We asked for large cod with chips and I asked for a salad garnish. When it eventually arrived the cod was very small, the chips were very over done and because they had sprinted lettuce on a quarter of my plate I had very few chips. While we were eating the other couple were given their take away fish and asked something about the long wait and some other things in an irritated way. The guy said well I have to cut the chips by hand now and shrugged his shoulders and walked off and ignored them. When he came over to us he asked if us we were happy, I said sorry but no, and told him what was wrong, he just looked at me as if to say so what and walked off.

I purchased a large portion of chips. The chips were horribly dry to eat. I would hesitate a guess and say they just reheated chips that had been cooked earlier as I was one of the first customers from opening. I hate it when chippies do that. I tried to telephone to complain but they didn’t answer. Two reasons why I won’t buy from there again. £5 wasted!

Excellent fish and chips, beautifully served by friendly staff. My wife said that the gluten free batter was the best she has ever tasted. I wish I could give more than 5 points.

My Husband and I had a home delivery from Gary’s and it was fresh and hot, the Cod was a very decent size and just the right amount of salt and vinegar were added to the chips. A must for all Fish and chip lovers.

I enjoy going regularly with my friend to enjoy a meal at Hotel Esplanade. Beautiful chips and excellent fish. The budget meal is especially good value at £7.50. Service good and friendly. I only wish though they didn’t serve it on a cold plate. I’m a slow eater.

Had chips and curry sauce from there and I know it's only chips but they where cooked fresh to order. Nice and crispy and the curry sauce was lovely. Will be going again soon.

I was recommended to Gary's by a friend. The shop was spotless and Gary and his staff were all friendly. He is very experienced in his work. They have an option for Gluten-free. I had the skate and chips which was superb. Will definitely return.

The best fish and chips ... especially as a celiac.. gluten free cooked every day.. and fabulous.. friendly staff and really welcoming.

This was the large portion of chips we waited over half an hour for. We ordered only chips and they were cooked to order. They were tasty, but I’ve never had such a small portion.

We had take out gluten free fish and chips - absolutely to die for. Beautiful battered crispy fish and melt in the mouth chunky chips. Very impressed, thank you.

Just had the£5.50 budget deal . Plenty of lovely chips and a good sized piece of cod perfectly cooked . Staff very friendly and all freshly made only a 10 minute wait . Fantastic, will definitely be back with freibdsss CD and family

The food was overpriced for small portions of very dull, not-particularly-nice fish and chips. 'Medium chips' was literally around 15 mostly short chips. I felt optimistic with the 'there's a 10 minute wait as we cook to order' but the fish batter was mostly soggy and was tasteless. It took 18 minutes but I didn't complain as thought it would be good. Hmm. No. The staff behaved as if my placing an order was a massive inconvenience. When I queried the small portions of chips it was as though I was something the staff member wanted to wipe off her shoe. Very disappointed as some reviews are good and I was having lunch with special people so deliberately looked online for best chippies in Clacton. Wish I'd just gone to a random, cheerful place elsewhere. Time and money wasted. Would never return.

6 of us visited here recently and had a lovely lunch. The food was freshly cooked, plenty of it and also Gluten free for me. It felt like a real treat being able to eat battered sausage and chips! Friendly staff, lovely and clean place.

We haven't visited since Gary took over and must say lunch was out of this world. We chose to sit indoors after bowling at the Pavillion. The restaurant is clean and well managed. I ordered halloumi and chips and my partner chose rock and chips. We watched everything prepared and cooked freshly. The batter was light and crisp and food was amazing. I couldn't eat it all and the waitress was more than happy to provide a doggy bag. We will definitely be returning, thanks so much.

I usually use the Golden Fillet but sadly they have been beset with a Tragic fire, so have been trying different chippies in the Clayton area. This is definitely the best I have tried thus far. I tried it during the week and went back tonight. Really good plaice and chips cooked to order. No, recooked up chips that have been sitting in the fryer for hours. I have to say it wasn’t busy but I think if people give it a try it should become much busier

We became regulars because of the great quality but, whoever runs it now does not know what good fish and chips means. Under cooked fish with runny batter, raw chips meant the whole meal was inedible. Never again!

Being a coeliac it was lovely to be able to have fish &chips no worries of cross contamination and pay the same price as normal fish and chips Really recommend the restaurant

Wonderful fresh cooked large cod and chips with curry sauce. Outdoor seating ok for dogs. Recommended

First time I have eatern here as down visiting for wkend staff were absolutely fab restaurant very clean we sat out side tables was spread apart which was great. The food was absolutely amazing so lovely to be able to get Gluten free as a lot of restaurants and take ways only do the odd day . U offer gluten free all the time will defo be back soon x

We visited this restaurant for first time because they offer gluten free fish and chips. Restaurant staff had good understanding about separate fryers for gluten free frying to prevent cross contamination. Food was piping hot and delicious. Best that we have found in the area. Will be back. Well done Gary’s.

We had 2 kids meals and cod and chips, reasonably priced and really lovely. We’ll definitely be back, couldn’t recommend enough.

Visited with my daughter, the fish and chips were the best we have ever had. The batter was very light. The staff were very friendly and observed social distancing very well. Would certainly go there again.

We have been here a few times and Gary’s Fish Restaurant never fails . The fish is always freshly cooked with a choice of skin on or off which is great to have that choice and the light batter is so crispy all served with lovely fluffy chips. Great all washed down with a lovely cuppa or a drink from the bar.

Just excellent best in Clayton on sea, we come here every six months and love coming in staff are great and treat you like a human being

Food was very good very fresh and everyone very nice . Parking can be a bit of a problem give your self time for that

Took my dad, niece for dinner on Saturday. The staff were so friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. The fish was amazing. The only reason I haven't given 5 stars is we asked for half salad half chips with our meal and the chip portion was on the stingy side and the salad was a bit boring and lacked presentation. And although there were only 3 tables occupied at the time we had to wait well over 20 minutes for our food to come up. But that being said it was worth the wait and this would not stop me from making a return visit. I'll definitely be going again in the near future

This was my first visit with a good mate who recommended it and visits here regularly. The cod was so fresh and the batter is an important part for me and it was perfect. A good helping of chips also lovely and fresh and I had curry sauce which was very tasty and had a nice kick to it. The young female who was frying done the owner proud. Will definitely visit more often.

I often have friends visiting from South London and they always want to make a beeline for Gary’s Fish and Chips. One fussy friend has actually judged it to be the best fish and chips she has ever eaten! The staff are friendly and welcoming. The restaurant overlooks the sea. All food is cooked to order and there is plenty of it. I have lost count of the amount of times I have been there, and have never yet been disappointed.

Near the Pier at Clacton on Sea.We 4 all had fish and chips of different varieties and all thoroughly enjoyed their meal.The beer was nice and cold too and the service excellent.Would Definately return.It seems "take away" is also very popular with the locals as well.

Nice clean restaurant, good prices, friendly staff, good menu. You can have the usual fish and chips or they offer 1/2 portion of chips and then salad or no chips and just salad you don’t have to eat the fish with batter on so Gary’s offers a healthy alternative. They also have a alcohol licence so if you fancy a small one with your dinner it’s there if you wish.

Proper fish and chip restaurant, with an alcohol licence. Good fish choices (cod roe was HUGE) and nice chips. Served with a smile and prices are very reasonable indeed - actually cheaper to sit in here than some places charge to take out. Can't comment on the desserts as I had no room for one!

We love going to this restaurant, the food is lovely, the restaurant is clean and comfortable and the staff are really friendly. They serve the standard chip shop menu which is always cooked to perfection, but there is the option to order grilled fish with salad.

We went to Gary’s Saturday for fish n chips not knowing it was no longer Johnny macs. We ordered our meals and drinks and waited,after about ten minutes a waitress came over and asked my husband did he order rock.no he said cod.oh she said your waitress said you wanted rock,we have a couple of pieces of rock cooked you could have,no I don’t like rock said my husband I want cod.thats okay she said but that will be about another 10 minutes,ok we will have to wait . 2 minutes later the people on the table next to ours got their order one of which was cod.now bearing in mind the people on the next table came in ten minutes after us how come she got cod before my husband.at last our meal arrives and we have finished our drinks so have to order more to go with our meal.now don’t get me wrong the food was lovely but having to spend another £9 on drinks left a bad taste,when we went to pay the waitress ask if everything was ok,which my husband replied he was not happy having to pay for the extra drinks,with this Gary became very loud and rude to us and just walk out of the shop while we were talking to him,so we paid our bill and on the way out we bumped into Gary who as talking about us to someone else,he then again became very loud and obnoxious & silly ranting and raving like some madman.would never recommend or go to this fish And chip shop again.very bad attitude not a pleasant evening and cost £33 for cheap meal for 2.should have gone to weatherspoons.

Three of us wandered in, not knowing anything about Gary's. It was very clean, with nice wooden tables (not melamine!), and plenty of room. The service was friendly and efficient, and our fish and chips were excellent. Fish well cooked with nice crispy batter, and piping hot. A nice cold beer was the perfect accompaniment.

By far the best food in Clacton-on-Sea, fresh fish grilled as you require, great pint of Guinness staff very helpful with children. Been to Franco’s food frozen in the middle Rubbish. This is the place to eat for all . Great food great prices.

Called in for a fish tea this friday 3 of us had the Rock eel 1 had cod The chips were perfect so were the mushy peas Overall a great meal Oh they also do gluten free meals as well

This is the second time we have visited this place and it was just a delicious as the first time. The fish and chips are cooked to order and you would be very hard to find anything to complain about. Not only is the food good but the staff are very friendly and helpful. The menu is very varied with lots of choice. Looking forward to a return visit.

I would highly highly recommend this place for food clean and tidy is 100% . I only had medium chips large cod twice for me and my partner and it just melted in our mouth. I travelled 85 miles to see my partner and decided to get fish & chips this was the best decision I made today. I will be driving 85 miles again and again for this food . Even if I was further away I would drive to get the fish and chips from GARYS FISH & CHIPS CLACTON 1000%

Lovely fish and chips first time there well worth the money. Restaurant lovely and set out and well busy.

Freshly cooked quality fish and chips. The prices look a bit on the expensive side however when you get your food the portions are enormous. I had a medium portion and my husband a large portion but neither of us could eat it all. We shared mushy peas but couldn’t eat all that either.

The best in Clacton and I've tried them all. Quality value service cleanliness and courtesy. Gary's has them all.

Lovely fish skinned great chips and good salads and if you don’t have chips and have salad instead they don’t charge extra for the salad. Where everywhere else charges as a side salad .

Must be the best fish and chips we have ever had. The cod must have been at least a foot long and so tender and juicy. The gluten free option was perfect and the batter lovely and crispy. Staff were lovely and very attentive. With a lovely atmosphere and overlooking the sea what more could you want.

We were a large group which just wanted some nice fish and chips, the staff didn’t seem organised and Gary had to come and sort out who had and hadn’t ordered. The food was nice but every item you ordered had to come with chips which isn’t what was ordered and wasn’t explained when we ordered also you cannot order a large portion of chips in the restaurant. However again we were not notified when we ordered. The chips got less and less as we received our meals.

Visited last week Garry made the best gluten free fish I have ever had. He was friendly and quick as well..the rest of the family were happy as well.

Had been recommended this restaurant by several different friends. Pleased we tried it at last. What a lovely meal and very friendly and helpful staff. The place was modern, well decorated and above all clean. The fish was lovely and white it was hot and very tasty. Highly recommend it.

Looking for a pre show meal we went here and were so pleased we did. Lots of choice on the menu, and as It is attached to a hotel it is licenced as well. Tables were not too close together, and were spotlessly clean.

My partner and I had a lovely meal here. The staff were lovely and very attentive. The decor was lovely especially the beautiful murals. You couldn't fault the food the portions were generous and very reasonably priced. I noticed there was a ramp to enable easy acces.

Whilst visiting Clacton with my partner, we called in here to order a takeaway of Cod and Chips and it was delicious.

Great Fish and Chips supper skate was superb, very friendly staff a must when visiting Clacton wonderful sea front the flowers are amazing and the weather for March was super.

Excellent food. My cod was probably the best tasting piece of fish I have had for quite some time. My partner's scampi was also of excellent quality. A good varied menu to suit all. Lovely mug of tea too and very good chips. Friendly and welcoming staff. Very clean and pleasant atmosphere, even on a wet Sunday afternoon. Well worth a visit. Thank you.

Cant praise this establishment enough. Superb food, brilliant friendly and accomodating people. I had my 50th birthday meal here last night, 25 of us. The service was spot on, especially for such a large no of people, the food just divine and massive tasty portions, well cooked. The staff made us all so welcome, lovely people, it made the evening perfect. Highly recommend visiting. Try the large cod, skin off. You'll need an appetite to finish it though !

This was formerly Johnny Mac's now taken over by Gary, one of the original fryers with a huge Clacton following. Excellent food quality, great prices and set on the sea front within a large family-friendly restaurant.
