I recently ordered takeaway for some friends, but unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience and quite pricey. I ordered the pork belly, expecting something similar to the restaurant's offering, but instead received dried-out, fatty scraps that looked nothing like the pictures. The vegetable dish was also a letdown, missing the beansprouts it had when I dined in a week earlier. On a positive note, the prawn toast was tasty, but the chicken noodles lacked beansprouts and were mostly just noodles—not worth the cost. Lastly, the spare ribs were a real letdown, with only three small pieces for the high price they charged.

Amazing staff, very friendly, very polite. Amazing food as well. I went for my birthday eve dinner and they surprised us with complimentary dessert and candle and cookies after our dinner. It was one of the best experience for me. A must visit !!!❤️❤️

I visited Gars today and had an exceptional experience. The food was excellent. A special mention goes to Maia, who provided outstanding service. Despite our large group, she was incredibly sweet and went out of her way to ensure we were well taken care of. Her attention to detail and friendly attitude was very much appreciated!

Nice restaurant, central location and better seating is upstairs. Starters of dumplings and squid very disappointing as would describe as bought in and reheated at best. Main was meal was very nice and only other observation we asked 2 different people 3 times for the same drink before it came 20 minutes later.

Be warned. This place has gone downhill (my opinion) the service was chaotic at times. In brief: 1. Made a reservation via FORK after entering my card details, on arrival cannot find the reservation and then criticise the channel of booking - Which is via Gars Web page 2. Ask for tap water (in addition to other paid drinks) then advise no because it may be contaminated - Guess what, I have to then pay for bottle of water at a premium price... that's convenient. Not convinced I was being told the truth. 3. Food is not special and is pretty standard. 4. Ask for the bill and 2 additional drinks added (which werent ordered or consumed) which amounted to an additional £10 and service charge.

Shocking. Gars , was, once, a premier dining experience in Brighton. A party of 4 enjoying a birthday evening. We had to fight past the delivroo guys blocking the entrance to gain access. We were seated in the upper area where lighting fails to reach. The menu left us nonplussed but we soldiered on. Reasonable priced drinks arrived. Starters too. Then an prolonged wait for no main. When we eventually found a waiter he said they had been busy with a recent arrival of 12, go figure! This follows with luke warm food of no particular quality. At some point a female member of staff arrived, unannounced, and fails to introduce herself as the manager and asks after our experience and opinions. She bridles at our description of a poor evening and suggested that I'm over firm of my opinion of the experience! As I'm educating her on customer relations another customer arrives at our table to say their experience was worse! I pop to the loo and upon my return the manager is still complaining to my companions about my opinions as a paying customer, I then read her her horoscope and she reduces our bill, I in return point her to now 3 other unhappy tables. To draw this experience to a close, AVOID AVOID AVOID. MY WORST RESTAURANT EXPERIENCE IN 50 YEARS

Gars service interesting Chinese fare, most of all as it's not at all Chinese in most cases. The kung po chicken was chicken cutlet with sweet chilli sauce, no veg, poorly fried, just awful. The xiao long bao were definitely frozen, understandable under the circumstances, but lukewarm dumplings being served is a bit rough. Otherwise service lovely however the manager had a bit of a hard streak.

Very good food and service,we were seated downstairs, which was OK but little atmosphere,tended to get chilly with the main door opening for the Just Eat collections. Only issue was the pre booking procedure ,we arrived to be told the booking had been cancelled as a 2nd email asking for a c,card had not been responded to however we were seated and over all enjoyed a very good meal.

Been ordering from Gars for the last 8 years, and it used to be my regular favourite in Brighton. Unfortunately in the last few months the prices have gone through the roof and the portion sizes have halved. Not worth it anymore :(

We got takeaway from here. A tiny pot of crispy beef, mostly batter, set us back £16. Outrageous prices for hardly any food. I remember the time when this was a good restaurant. My advice would be….don't bother.

A little over a year ago my bf and I had our very first date here and it was fabulous. See Feb 2023 review. Last night, now just over a year dating, we were rounding off our trip to Gran Canaria with a couple of nights in Brighton so naturally decided to revisit here, expecting more of the same 5 star service and food. Only we came away disappointed. The staff were friendly enough just not quite the 5 star job from a year ago but we’d give them 4. The food however was the biggest let down. The tempura prawns needed a few more seconds as internally the batter hadn’t crisped up and was doughy even though externally it was crispy. Chilli squid was good. Satay chicken was a bit bland. Spare ribs were nice. Weirdly the best bits on the sharing platter were the added vegetables with garlic. Crispy duck, made extra crispy for us, was however very nice. Loved it. Chicken curry I had for main course was nice. Chilli beef my bf had was “ok”. A year ago, admittedly as a first date and all the excitement that comes with that, we left waxing lyrically and hoping to return. Last night and still very much in love with each other and after our very first holiday together, we were just as giddy wanting to come back here. But whilst we left hand in hand, we were somewhat underwhelmed with our meal.

Popped in for an earlyish dinner. I've never been to this venue before, so I thought I would give it a try. I wish I hadn't bothered to be honest. The host who greeted me was very formal bordering on rude. I am not sure why she took a particular issue with me. But the table opposite she was very friendly with, took interest in them and asked how the meal was etc. I never got asked once. NB: The table appears to know the host, so that would explain some of the friendliness. It wasn't very busy when I visited at 1800 ish. Apart from the table of three/four opposite, there was another couple. So it wasn't like she was busy and rushed off her feet. I had vegetable singapore noodles, spring rolls, and a couple of glasses of pinot noir. So I spent a substantial amount for one meal. Food was nothing special, to be honest, and a little on the cold side. I am old and long enough in the tooth to know that not everyone will like me. And frankly, I don't care if someone likes me or not. However, when I am paying for a service, I at least expect to be treated with some friendliness. I am not expecting staff to lick my a***, but I would like to feel welcome in any venue I visit. NB: It does say in the menu, but a 10% service charge is automatically added to your bill. I still paid it... I understand businesses finding things tough at the moment, so I try and do my little bit to help out. I also was not rude to the host, although I could have been. I guess the undertone and reading between the lines was, "we don't want your custom." Fair play, you won't be getting it again in the future, and I will not be recommending you to anyone I know.

It was so epic to come to Gars Brighton UK, Brighton. I enjoyed their set menu and ordurves. Will come again with the ball and chain! And dessert is to die for?!!!? 😍😝

Came here just after 5 with friends just for a casual dinner. We really the food and there was excellent service. Will definitely come again.

Haven't been to this restaurant in years. Can't say I was too impressed. The waitress was very nice and my friend and I chose the 2 course 'Chef's Feast'. The crispy duck was nice enough. The main course was average but given the quantity of food, it was super expensive. The dishes were nothing special. We felt like we could have eaten more. Shame the portions are small. Won't be returning, but glad I went after so long to find out.

Have been here many times before to celebrate family birthdays because it’s always been really nice but this was not a good experience. We waited 1hr20 from arriving to getting our starters and felt that there were not enough staff to service the tables. Drinks took ages, food took ages. Food was lukewarm when it came out. Sent it back and was not much hotter when it returned. Platters were small for the price. When we went to pay, the bill listed more prawn crackers than we actually ordered and one item which we never received - even tho we asked two staff members when it would be brought out.

We had booked a table for 2 and were seated right by the staff area where they were receiving the food in the dum waiter. This was also the area where they cleared all of the used plates too! So noisy with plates and cutlery banging and bashing around and staff running around like crazy. The service was slow and the food was really not worth the wait. The chicken in both the starter and main course was very dry and tough. We will not be returning. Also due to having so many delivery drivers in and out all of the time, customers were waiting by the door and being ignored as the staff were dealing with deliveries!

Had my Valentine’s Day dinner here and it was perfect. Staff were so lovely, the food was amazing, atmosphere was very romantic and intimate even though the restaurant was quite full. Had the set menu and everything was delicious, would definitely come back!

The appetisers were lovely but we then had a 45 minute wait for our main course 1 dish was burnt 1 dish tasted over and undercooked and the rice tasted like it had been reheated and we didn't find a single piece of egg.... I can fault the staff the waitresse we had was lovely. But we will not be going back. The atmosphere was warm and cosy but abit to dark as had to read menu by touch light on my phone which we witnessed many customers doing. So I give 3 stars at best

Appetiser was nice but it then took about 45 minutes to get our main course. Rice tasted like it had been reheated , noodles very over done and the chicken tasted slightly undercooked. Lighting far too low as many customers including myself had to read the menu by our phones torches. Staff were very warm and friendly but certainly wont be going back.

Delicious food, 2nd visit today and it was as good as last time. We live in London but this will become a regular when we visit Brighton.

The food here is just slop for the tourist trade. Extremely disappointing. The waiters were friendly and attentive but that’s it. £198 I’ll never get back.

The staff are super lovely! So nice and attentive. Unfortunately the 3 stars are for the food. It tasted very average, not the best I’ve eaten and i can’t say i’d recommend but the environment is lovely and perhaps we came on an off night. The prawn toast was a bit for my group! Gars is known for being the slightly higher costing, higher quality Chinese food of Brighton but I go so that I can knowing eat their food due to gluten allergy. They have their own gluten free menu which is clear and contains a few dishes I would normally stay clear from but I’ve had now a few times with no problem!

The food is impeccable and the staff extremely professional and must try if you are in brighton.

This restaurant was overpriced for sure but if the food had been any good we would not have minded so much. The food was worse than my local Chinese which is not good either but cost over 3 times as much. I can only imagine they survive because of passing trade. I will never eat here again.

A really well run Restaurant. Excellent service and a great welcome for a first time customer. You can tell straight away this is owner managed. It ticked all the boxes, very good service and food, spotlessly clean and a great atmosphere. I will 100% go back when next in Brighton.

A very stylish and flashy restaurant, perfect for date night. The food was incredible (with lots of VG and GF options). The staff were very nice too and flexible as we had to extend our booking a few times. If you like great food, flash and 5 star service, this is your place!

Lovely little Chinese restaurant in the lanes . Prettily laid out. Good menu. We had fabulous prawn toasts 4xs normal thickness! Spring rolls and crispy seaweed to start. Sweet and sour Pork delicious, Beef in black bean sauce, Chicken Satay. Egg fried rice and Pak choi. All was lovely. Will.go again.

We Popped in to a late dinner for my birthday, staff was amazingly kind and attentive, food came out quickly and it tasted amazing. Me being a cjef know how annoying can it be when someone just drops in so late but it didnt feel like a burden to the staff. After a very nice conversation with Ashley, our server, when we revealed that my boyfriend actually used to work for rhis restaurant, had an amazing chat, and in the rush of walkin out we have forgotten our leftovers which we asked for to have for takeaway. we went to the taxi rank close by and Ashley, our server actually took the time and HUGE EFFORT, TO BRING OUR FORGOTTEN TAKEAWAY AFTER US !! Have to say, I enjoyed every single bite of the meal in Gars. I had a 3 course meal, with a couple of well paired glasses of wine. The Kung Po Chicken was exceptional. Considering the quality, the price is reasonable. Ideal for those who want a romantic night out. There was also plenty of room for bigger groups. Maia was an outstanding hostess. Spoke through the menu and made great wine suggestions!

This is one of my all time favourite Chinese restaurants. We booked here as it looked good in reviews. Although the website said it wasn’t normally open on a Monday I rang as it was Bank Holiday Monday and was pleased to hear it was indeed open. We booked a table for 8pm which we were on time for. After sitting for a little while we asked for a menu and ordered very quickly one of the three course set menus. No issues were raised by the staff. The starters came and were well above average - we’ve eaten these dishes many times! However one of the waiters asked if we could have the second course at the same time as the kitchen was due to close at 9pm and we might not have much time. We didn’t want to eat two courses together and commented that this would have been good information to have earlier; we could have eaten earlier or ordered a two course meal. The waiter agreed that we could have the starters and then the duck would come after. The prawn toast was particularly succulent and ‘prawny’. A different waiter then approached us to say the we would have to have the second and third courses together. We pointed out that we had already had this discussion but had actually been sitting for 10 minutes without the second course. The duck came and was perfectly adequate. The third course came and was not as good as the first two - they dishes had been sitting for a while. We were told that it was a busy night and that the staff were pushed. It was a BH! this could have been averted if we had been given the information earlier. Our table booking for 8pm was accepted as was our order for three courses. It cast an unnecessary pressure on the evening which meant we didn’t enjoy it as much as we would have done if the staff had been less anxious about the kitchen. The staff were very apologetic and polite.

NOT SUITABLE FOR COELIAC’s. The service and hospitality here is good. The food is also good however I don’t recommend for anyone with serious allergens. I have coeliac disease and came here the first time, they were able to cater for me however the second time I came here I was then told a different thing. They use the same fryer/oil to fry everything which Ofcourse means there is cross contamination which meant I had to leave.

This has to be the best Chinese I’ve ever eaten at. I’ve experienced the glories of China Town in London and elsewhere but this really hit different. Don’t rob yourself, make sure you order the prawn toast!
