Gareth James Chocolatier in North Tyneside

Visited this shop earlier in the week 40 min before closing. Immediately I was greeted to a face of disappointment and told that they were closing soon and last sit downs are in ten min. I asked if it’s okay if we sat in for a coffee? The lady behind the counter said “I don’t think it is, I better check”. I walked out.

My new favourite coffee spot! The coffee is made with such care, served to the right temperature (unlike a lot of other places), and tastes delicious! My favourite is the white mocha made with their chocolate made fresh in store rather than powdered chocolate and you can really taste the difference. I’ve just tried the brownies for the first time after reading the reviews and wow.. they did not disappoint. So far, I’ve had a caramel brownie and a normal chocolate brownie and I have to say even though I loved both, the original chocolate brownie was my favourite. Probably the best brownie I have had. I’ve also tried the millionaire shortbread which was delicious too!

Coffee - amazing. Brownies and choc - amazing. Nice small chilled out seating area inside. Some of the best coffee I've had in a while. Very good barista when we went in. A tad dear but for the quality it's worth it.

Fantastic small coffee and cake/chocolate shop. Their chocolate brownies are well worth trying. VERY dense and rich! They also sell high end chocolates and bakes, great for a last minute gift!

One of the Best place for a coffe and cake we visited for a long time in UK. Young stuff servesed our family in cafe in the rainy morning and it is was perfect. Hot chocolate, coffee, Almond cake and handmade chocolate candys were delicious. Atmosfere was calm. This cafe is the Pearl of North Englang coast. Would like to have the same cafe near my home. Superb hand made fresh chocolates. Good flavours as well as plainer ones. Helpful service. Classy box for gifting, or slightly cheaper bag for your own consumption (couldn't resist a few for ourselves as well as the special gift we went for). We'll be back again I'm sure.

Super coffee (best on the coast) and brownies (best in the world)

Cappuccino and mint chocolate squares were both delicious! Service is friendly and prompt.

Fantastic hand made specialist chocolates. I bought my partner a box recently to cheer her up, and she says they are the Best Chocolates she has ever tasted. We went back today to choose together a selection of truffles for a birthday present. I will go back and collect them on Friday so they are as fresh as possible. They are made with fresh cream and so are best eaten within a week, or at most 10 days after they have been made. But thus freshness, quality ingredients and the skill of the chocolateir in blending the flavours together is what makes Chocolates from here so good. They are also presented very well and make a lovely gift. As you can tell, I highly recommend this independent chocolateir. Come on down and enjoy a coffee, tea or hot chocolate, or some of their hand made ice cream whilst you choose what you want to buy.

It's a perfect place to go on a cold winters day and drink excellent hot chocolate and eat cake.

Went in for a hot chocolate treat and no tables were free. Ordered in a takeaway cup and stood waiting for a table. When one came up I went and sat down. Was told to move so someone with a regular cup could sit down who had just arrived and was ordering a drink. Had to move and continue standing. Great hot chocolate, rude and poor service. Will not return.

Lovely brownies. Rich and very sticky. The Christmas Pudding Brownie is superb. Very seasonal and not too sweet. Coffee is always lovely. Today’s flat white was the perfect temperature (not too hot). Staff are always friendly and helpful.

Don't miss this place. Other reviewers rightly recommend the brownies which are quite fudge like. The caramel slice delicious and top class. Both Blood orange sorbet and pineapple coconut ice cream excellent.

It is difficult to put into words how wonderful the hot chocolate is-but once you’ve tasted it you will come back again and again and again. The handmade chocolate is also the best I have ever tasted too. Looking forward to when the café can reopen as their ice cream is also fabulous.

Hands down the nicest takeaway hot chocolate I have ever tasted.

We are regular visitors to Tynemouth and made our first visit post Lockdown visit yesterday.We arrived and decided to have a coffee after our 50 minute drive to get there.Having passed this shop for several years and dismissing it (wrongfully) as a chocolate shop we decided to have a coffee.Eating out after the lockdown has changed and generally speaking not for the better.However, I ordered a flat white and my wife had a large Americano with pouring cream which are our default choices.The coffee was served in proper cups and I have to say was of the highest standard and the service matched it.As it happens the owner was in the shop and we made an enquiry about one of the local fish and chip shops which hadn't yet reopened.He told us that it just hadn't reopened yet but thought that it would and we began a very pleasant conversation.I have to say he was a perfect gentleman and very, very passionate about his work and business. I say this because I have read a review which was less than complimentary about a man who I guess may have been him.Hand on heart we have never come across a more pleasant and courteous cafe owner. His passion came through in a very genuine way and is matched by his products. We purchased some ground coffee from him (it was that good!) and he insisted I sample his Mint Tea...Wow absolutely delicious!Trust me if you're looking for coffee, tea or the cake and other treats that he produces go no farther than this delightful shop. An absolute gem!

Grabbed some brownies when we were visiting the town. The original chocolate brownies were heavenly. Really fudgy (no chocolate chips, but not necessary). My 2 year old son had most of mine. Wish I'd got another!

Vegan cupcakes and milk alternatives now available. Used to love this place before I went vegan and now I can enjoy it again. :) Had a delicious orangette-studded chocolate orange cupcake and a latte.

I have to concede, I basically live in this cafe. I live and work in Tynemouth and have been a regular since day 1. Their products are to die for, their coffee keeps me (and my staff!) going on a daily basis, the staff are lovely and they all go above and beyond in an effort to help, serve and make you feel welcome. I regularly recommend my clients to pay a visit (and I’m not on commission) and most of all they have always bent over backwards to assist me with choices given my challenging allergies. I recently asked them to make a special cookie pile/cake for one of my staff members birthday. Not only was it amazing, they delivered it personally and joined in singing happy birthday. 5 stars all the way.

I went yesterday with my 2 year old daughter and 8 month old son as a treat and knowing they done vegan muffins. I was desperate to try them. The cakes and coffee were unbelievable (the best vegan muffin I’ve ate), the girls who served me were so friendly. Everything was going great. I then done my best to clean up as I had my hands full with my 8 month old son and trying to get a 2 year old ready (it’s quite a task). I left and off I went to enjoy the rest of the day. I then heard a man shout excuse me (don’t know if he was the owner as I didn’t see him in the cafe). I stopped and he then started telling me off and belittling me in the middle of front street as my daughter left some crumbs, he wouldn’t let me speak and I tried telling him how he was embarrassing me (I am always open about this I suffer bad anxiety and getting out the house is quite a task for me added with 2 young children). He said he wasn’t bothered and was telling me how I’ve basically ruined the interior of his cafe as it was new. I totally understand that a small business/place thrive on everything being perfect and you can get upset at some crumbs, but please do not run out of your shop and corner me to tell me off. Because of this the man induced me to having a panic attack while having 2 young children with me, I have been replaying the incident in my head all day and night and have had further anxiety from this.I hand on heart am sorry if my daughter was a bit to messy for your place but please don’t do that in public and cause a 26 year old woman a panic attack. I would of happily came back but not now. I don’t feel welcomed and truth be told I don’t think your place is best for kids if you want your place perfect. People please try this place they do amazing food and coffee and hopefully his outburst is a one off. But please be aware.

the sea salt and caramel brownie is a work of art that transcends mere taste. It is aesthetic even in its four square appearance. You have heard of the term mindfullness where you have to put in some effort to get results. In this case mindfullness comes easy for you can be nowhere else but in the domain of taste delight that ensues once that brownie begins to melt in the mouth at body temperature and spreads across the tongue like a carpet of chocolate splendour.

It's reputation preceded our visit. Our actual visit there justified fully it's reputation. A large variety of handmade cakes and of course their own-recipy chocolate drink, which I absolutely recommend. Their brownie is also delicious. All that in a cosy ambient were chocolate and coffee smell is filling the room. Will certainly revisit.

My first taste of the wonderful creations from this company has left me wanting more ! From the exquisite chocolate brownie ( more chocolatey than an other, ever) through to the delights of the individually flavoured summer collection, I could wax lyrical about how good this place is. Let's just say it's a chocolate lover's heaven, and a local business, with creations clearly made with a lot of heart and a lot of chocolate expertise. Willy Wonka ? Naaaah, Gareth James every time. 10/10.

Brilliant service, lovely shop, the presentation of the chocolates both in the shop and box they put them in for you is superb!! The chocolates themselves are handmade and some look little works of art, the taste is unique flavours and very delicious chocolate. If you need a present for someone or just a treat for yourself I totally recommend this chocolatier

Authentic produce, good quality chocolates which are suitable for gifts, a treat for self as well as coffee shop. Staff are pleasant and knowledgable about the produce.

Amazing!! Huge slices of cake and it is really well priced! Even though it’s quite small inside, there is still the right amount of space around tables so it’s not cramped!

I got lucky at my visit at Tynemounth. Before the store closes I had the opportunity for taste the ice cream. Amazing taste. The best!

I had the best ice cream in my life!

Travelled to Tynemouth just for this after a friend recommend it to me. We had carrot cake and red velvet and omg they were both fresh, moist and full of flavour! Personally I think they should be charging more for the cake as it is such good quality and the price is probably the cheapest I’ve seen in a coffee shop. Afterwards I bought some chocolate and marzipan and two salted caramel brownies. Great experience, staff were friendly and even though it was busy and there was a lot of people coming in for takeaway food, it did not feel uncomfortable. Worth the 25 minute drive!

The best brownie I ever had! I would give them 20/10! The cafe is clean and staff are kind. I recommend it after having a fish and chips meal!

Uses acorn dairy, seems to pay them on time too. Nicely minimalist however £4 for pre packaged possibly defrosted brownies is pushing it.

After a weekend visit to Newcastle and Tynemouth this weekend we accidentally found this incredible chocolatier, and we're so glad we did! It was a blustery day and we were looking for something to warm us up, the hot chocolate here did just that! I went for the signature and my partner chose the white hot chocolate, they were both so delicious we ended up sharing each! We were so impressed by the cakes on display we also shared a millionaires short bread (absolutely delicious) and a slice of carrot cake - incredible! To top it off the staff were so smiley and friendly. The atmosphere of the shop was perfect and we're so glad we got to visit!

My wife and I love this place, we visit everytime we're in Tynemouth. The flavours are amazing. A real treat.

I made a long awaited visit on 19/7/18 when we were visiting the N.E from Nottinghamshire, We took the opportunity to visit the renowned Chocolatier and I would highly recommend it. We were lucky enough to be served by Gareth himself and had superb coffee and the best chocolate brownie I have ever tasted, the carrot cake was gorgeous too. We also tried rhubarb ice cream which was lovely but my favorite was the banana , gorgeous! I bought a selection of the handmade chocolates for home including a bag of cooking chocolate which made an amazing frosting on my daughters birthday cake and my husband has been enjoying the remainder of it with a brandy in the evening !!.We'll be back next time around .regards Carole Davis

Great little cafe with the most delicious brownies ever. So reasonably priced as well (£2.25 for the original brownie and you get a huge piece). The hot chocolate is incredible, made with melted chocolate. Not made it to the other cakes yet but they all look really yummy too. Staff always so friendly and lovely, never go to Tynemouth without popping in here.

Small cafe with seats inside and out. We just had ice creams which were as good as any we have had all year.

Love this place! Great coffee and cakes. Brownies are amazing and the chocolate is really good! Staff are really friendly and helpful. I only wish it were a bit bigger as sometimes you can't get a seat in the café.

After many visits to your shop, I can honestly say I was appalled be the way I was spoken to. Arrogant and rude! I believe it was the son of the owner (I only know this as I have a mutual to friend with the owner). Whilst your products are nice i will never go back. Please learn to treat your regular customers with manners & respects... its your regulars who pay your wages!!!

We had tea and Almond cake, it was very nice. We can see the passion behind the brand. However when we chatted with the owner Gareth, he came across very defensive and no generosity, when I asked if he had any chocolate that we could sample before we buy, he was unwilling to promote his product.

Best brownie you will ever have, truffles are delicious and the coffee is expertly made.

If you want fantastic quality chocolate or something with a twist then Gareth James is top. Also you can sit and have a great coffee... I would recommend with a brownie which are almost to decadent to finish in one sitting

TL:DR: try the salted caramel brownies! This place completely redefined brownies for me. I bought a salted caramel brownie and kept it on me while travelling around before finally taking my first bite 4 days later. INSTANT MOUTHGASM. The balance of bitter, sweet and salty is unimaginably well done.

Do not go to tynemouth without getting a brownie. It will charge your life. By far and away best brownie I have ever had!
