Surfcafe Tynemouth in North Tyneside

I was having an absolute mare. My van had locked me out and the temperature was dropping, still in my suit, dripping everywhere. The kind staff of the surf shop next door had been patiently (twas a little cold-brain-addled) helping me figure out a solution to the issue. Recovery blokes on their way, and with the surf shop closing, I was welcomed warmly into the cafe. Hot tea and some deliiiicious food were very kindly offered and gratefully accepted. Despite my stranded situation, I was cheering up rapidly thanks to the welcoming community and care of the staff. (and warming up thanks to the radiators and carefully placed space heater at my side) I cant thank you all enough, and I'm looking forward to my next visit to no end.

So friendly. I’ve cold day. Very welcoming. Highly recommend and the breakfast with crispy bacon was to die for. I’ll be back.

On our way home on a busy Saturday from a visit to the Tynemouth station market which is well worth a visit, we stopped off at the surfers cafe (Braken burger) grande parade Tynemouth for our lunch. It’s been a long hope to visit establishment and we weren’t disappointed. It’s a cafe with great decor and comfortable dining area on a warmer day there’s out door seating overlooking the coast. The menu is burgers chicken and loaded fries and can be accompanied with drinks from the bar. Our burgers were great quality and tasty, excellent fries it was busy and as patrons left the empty table was soon filled (dog friendly). The staff were welcoming and kept pace with clearing & cleaning tables. Our food arrived promptly and good portions well presented. The quality of our burger was good value for money and will return to try the different offerings thanks to all.

I’ve been a fan of Brack Burger for years and have recommended it to so many friends. If we are honest, my recommendations probably account for little given both the local and national attention they receive. Only recently they scored very highly from the well respected “Food Review Club”. I’m a fan of simple, ‘classic’ burgers and Brack always delivered. The thin smashed patties, fresh toppings, and, most importantly, the perfectly soft, pillowy yet slightly crisped buns made it a standout. For those in the know they were a kin to the In N’ Out style potato rolls. Unfortunately, something changed recently, and it’s just not the same. It seems they’ve switched to a new type of bun, and it really affects the whole burger experience. The new buns feel denser and a bit dry, which makes the burgers taste heavier and less flavorful. They don’t absorb the juices as well, and it’s missing that softness that balanced out the patty and toppings. Now, each bite just doesn’t have the same delicious harmony as before. The other elements of the burger are still great—quality ingredients, well-seasoned patties, and generous portions. I will say the fries are still stand out. But without the right bun to hold it all together, the whole experience falls flat. I truly hope the management reconsiders this change and brings back the original buns that made their burgers so memorable. Until then, I’m not sure I’ll be back as often.

We live it here and is our go too for coffees before our dog walks on the beach. Great value and friendly staff the place has a really cool vibe about it. The breakfast are also great with the beef patties and egg/cheese muffins and tater tots highly recommended. They love dogs too so you can take your little friends in no issues.

As a regular over the years, it was super disappointing to see what it’s become. As the previous review stated, really rude staff and not a pleasant experience.

This used to be one of our favourite place to pop in for a pint, but after our latest visit we will not be back, what is it with the staff in this place they are so unbelievably rude

This is my go to place, amazing food and atmosphere 😋 prices are great as are the staff, but 1 staff member goes above and beyond, she never fails to make me laugh with her wit and personality, Jade is definitely a keeper for this enterprise. Keep up the fantastic work!!!

Heard this place was good, walked in, staff talking just looked up and back down again, not even a hello, I believe this was the assistant manager. which doesn't give you much hope. Burger was okay but I've had better in town. fries were very salty it was over powering. but it was average at best. Wouldn't recommend or return.

I was supporting a young man with Autism on 15/05/24. After I was refused entry to us toilet at Beaches & Cream I was welcomed by a lovely guy working that afternoon at Surf cafe. I know this is not a review as such BUT with helpful,professional and freindly staff like this it bodes well for the establishment as a whole. I thank you so much.

Had tea not sure what they put in I had a bad reaction to it got sick. Ended up in A&E £2.40 for the privilege better walk past this and go to nicer cafe

There is definitely a relaxed surfer vibe in the Cafe. Nice surroundings and the staff were friendly. Reasonably priced menu of mostly burgers and chicken goujons. The loaded fries are definitely worth trying. Great wee spotti have a coffee, chat and watch the world go by.

Been here a few times, and on each time I have found the staff to be pretty rude and un-interested, making me feel unwelcome, it's a shame because it's a nice looking cafe with good food, and in a nice spot.

We had drinks only - loved the outdoorsy relaxed feel of the place. Cool surfy decor, plenty of outside seating. Loved it!!!

The cooked breakfast offers terrible value for money at £11. Everything was greasy and very dry. One piece of basic white bread cut in to two triangles for toast. Sausage cut in half, two pieces of tasteless american style streaky bacon and the smallest paper pot of beans you’re ever likely to see. The breakfast didn’t include coffee either….that was an extra £3 for a small black Americano so £14 altogether. Way overpriced and lacking in every department. Served in a paper fish and chips style tray…at that price I’d expect it at least on a proper plate. Absolute waste of money and left feeling completely underwhelmed.

Brack Burger in here is amazing. Great little place with food atmosphere.

Very poor service, waited 25 mins for a takeaway coffee. One staff member was very rude and abrupt. System for ordering coffee was dreadful.

We dropped in here during a visit to the nearby aquarium. The menu is basically burgers and they are pretty good. The seasoned fries I have to say were exceptional. They can do gluten free and vegan /vegetarian the whole family was covered. The coffee was somewhat inspid. The place is dog friendly. It was clean.

Walked in, 2 staff stood eating. Completely ignored by both, walked out. So many other places nearby that would happily welcome you for breakfast. A real shame.

Easily one of the best at the coast! Probably visit once a week be it for a pint, a burger or a take out coffee and never had a bad experience. It has such a welcoming, chilled vibe & there’s always something good going on- JD singing on Friday is always a treat! The large outside seating area is a hit with my doggos (they are a bit large for inside but they are welcome) and the views of the sea are dreamy and compliment a couple of pints nicely. The burgers are the best I have had (and I have had many) & I am fully addicted to the halloumi fries. There is something for everyone at the surf cafe and to top it off the owners/ staff are so lovely and friendly. Go if you haven’t already :)

The best burgers we’ve ever tasted! I had the peanut butter burger which was next level. Great atmosphere in an amazing location. I wish Surf Cafe every success.

Limited beer selection, but always a good vibe. Plenty of outdoor seating with a great view :)

This place is nice, and lovely service. Only downside was getting the IPA in a plastic cup, I was sitting inside, I don't really like beer in plastic cups, might be my personal preference though.

We’ve just visited the surf cafe, super cool interior with lovely staff and amazing views of the beach. Also would recommend the salt and pepper chips as they were unreal.

What a Canny little Cafe, on the edge of the Bluff. Cleary a Regular Spot for Surfers, next to a Shop for Surfing Stuff. Happy Staff who were welcoming, however, after a Busy Weekend. All the food was Eaten, but the Coffee made Amend. Plenty of spaces for Parking, with Outdoor seating to enjoy the view. An excellent spot to have a Snack & for us Oldies : A Disabled LOO!!

I was really looking forward to trying the smash burgers here but unfortunately was completely disappointed by our visit. Luckily managed to find a table big enough for family of 4 with space for pram at side. After. A few minutes of confusion we realised you had to fetch own menus and order at bar. The burgers sounded great and I was pleased the kids menu was very reasonable. We ordered two burger from the main menu, side of beer battered onion rings and a kids burger. The burgers looked great, husband loved his but I found it far too greasy and the amount of fat dripping out of it was off putting and messy. Son loved his. The onion rings on the other hand were revolting, again fat dripping out, batter was not crispy and the were lacking in flavour. Something had seriously gone wrong, maybe a one off and we were unlucky? We also had a pint each. It was nice enough but I felt the £5 per pint price tag was a little on the steep side… maybe they’ve only recently put the prices up due to inflation or has it been £5 for a while?

Went there in the day. Place was quite empty apart from a few but it was a weekday so no surprise. Friendly staff, really helpful. Excellent food.

It took a while to get my latte about 5 minutes

Canny little place, good for gigs though a bit on the small size, kinda wish for some nights when acts were on that the table and chairs would be moved to make more space, other then that found the staff to be canny. [edit] please note this review was before the place was redone in 2020 and not been to the new set up which looks pretty good! [edit] Extra star as had a burger from here which was belting!

Chicken burger was not pleasant and batter was burned. Service was basic, told to get our own sauces. Friend ordered a cup of tea, they'd run out of breakfast tea and just gave her a flavoured tea with milk, which was undrinkable. Overall expensive and unpleasant. I will never go back.

50 minute wait for 2 mediocre warm coffees, absolute joke. Get your act together plenty more out there with better service and coffee.

Great little place on the coast with burgers and other food available. Can be quite costly for anyone on a budget but the food os really good and the indoor atmosphere is great when they have live singers on different nights a week.

Love to have a pint and read. Selection limited, so had a cider. Dog's allowed, which is handy.

Slightly disappointed. No cake or brownies to go with my coffee. Would probably go elsewhere next time

Love the surf cafe vibe. Chill eclectic ambience. Great music, nice staff and nice choice of drinks. Haven't ate here but seems to be popular and food always looks and smells good. Website says its brack burgers which are some of my fave burgers! Live music here too :) Open mic Wednesdays from 8 Sunday showcase from 7pm I think...

An absolutely excellent venue on the sea front. Always popular and busy. Excellent food selection, good beers and some of the best staff around. Would highly recommend a visit if you are in the area.

After a bracing walk in the gold we needed a hot drink so called in for lattes, looks so different since the refurb, nice drinks, pleasant atmosphere & ok coffee. Not as nice as Ringtons or Pumphreys hence the down grade!

Excellent, loved the decor and the loaded fries and hot chocolate was unreal! Definitely coming back to try a burger next! Dog friendly too.

Called in for the first time today after a bracing walk along the seafront. No acknowledgment from staff as we went in, had to ask if it was ok to sit at a table. No one told us it wasn’t table service, so after waiting an age - found some menus (filthy by the way) and went to order. Three young people behind the counter, not interested in being there and chatting amongst themselves. Deigned to look up and serve me, very unfriendly and not helpful at all. Had to get my own drink out of the fridge, no napkins and no salt (had run out! Of salt? Really?) Can’t fault the food, was delicious. Really tasty. Have a word with your staff guys, you e got a gem but they let you down.

Great little café bar. Dog and child friendly with a relaxed atmosphere. Good food options, reasonably priced and open until 10pm which was great when other local options closed early in the winter.

After feeding seals in Tynemouth Seal Hospital I needed a coffee. This is a lovely local cafe with friendly staff and a great atmosphere

Great location and best hot chocolates in the North East!

I went in when it first opened in 2013 or 14. Just been back as I don't live here and it's grown but the service and friendliness are just as good as the 1st time. I will recommend the gingerbread hot chocolate and have to say it is better than the one I love near where I live.

Can’t complain about the food we did received However the order was missing a burger Tried the contact the driver option on Uber Eats but got no reply As there is no contact number for the restaurant I informed Uber Eats that part of my order was missing They refunded the cost of the burger but I had upgraded the fries which I’m not getting refunded for Also the refund will take 3-10 days so the full amount is now pending I realise this is not the restaurants fault but as they only do delivery through Uber eats and have no contact number unfortunately I will not be ordering from here again which is a shame as the food we did get was very nice

Lovely location as in ‘on the beach’ wonderful. It creates an atmosphere in itself. The tables are a bit sticky but the food was quite nice and the staff were helpful and kind. It doesn’t deserve poor reviews and I think people need to to appreciate its position and the efforts put in by the staff. Will definitely be back.

Girl who served us was unhelpful and unfriendly. There are lots of other places to get a coffee in Tynemouth. Avoid this place and go elsewhere.

Had a bacon and egg sandwich. Added hebs to egg lifted flavour to another level. Cappuccino to usual high standards

Stopped off on a break for something to eat. Great service, friendly staff & good all round. Food was amazing & if ever passing by again should be back for more.

Waiting for Aquarium to open to drop off towels for seal sanctuary this morning I walked along front and found this place. I had a fabulous Breakfast burger which was scrummy and very good value. Would highly recommend and its dog friendly 👏👍 5/5

We visited this morning for the first time, a Saturday morning treat to start the weekend. We entered to see 3 staff gathered round the till area, no greeting, nod or even acknowledgement We were there so we took a seat and waited. No menu on the table so I approached the staff and interrupted their conversation to ask for one. A grunt followed along with a gesture of the had towards another table, I asked again to be told there's one on that table. I felt extremely uncomfortable because of the rude staff so left without ordering. What a disappointment

Well ...what a place! Always wanted to go & finally managed to & it didn't disappoint! Food is spot on, even though we only had a breakfast muffin ... Each element of the muffin was cooked to perfection 🤤.. place is clean cool & welcoming...staff are equally cool & welcoming too .. brilliant place 💘

Used to really enjoy the breakfast food especially the sausage, egg and hash brown muffin. Went this morning and it was totally different nothing like it used to be. Shame to say I won't be going back.

Not really been much since it's mini makeover. Love it. Very cool inside still but seems to have gained some space. At the minute are partnered with Brack Burger which is a match made in heaven. Those guys know their way round a patty. Coffee still good, beer still good. Great outside area overlooking the beach. Perfect on a lovely summers day. They seem to be a very dog friendly place too which is great.

Just the job! We had 2 burgers (P&B Perry & Blue Suede) and chicken strips for the nipper. The P&B Perry was with Chilli Jam, Bacon and Peanut Butter, the Blue Suede with Blue Cheese. All tasty stuff with seasoned fries cooked to order, fresh and hot. We drank Passionfruit Tea which was refreshing. Enjoyed the vibe too.

After completing the c2c and waiting to be picked up in the pouring rain, all eight of us stumbled into this place and we were so glad we did. Great service, amazing burgers - we will be back again soon!

Delicious, simple and tasty breakfast. Very reasonably prices. Great views in the sun overlooking the beach. 10/10, will be back for a 3rd time :)

A red hot August day, a walk by the beach with a cool female friend of mine and it was time for a burger! Entered the Tynemouth Surf Cafe as I’d been told by another friend that Brack Burgers were now getting served in there,...

Nice venue and tasty food, especially the Halloumi fries but we used the loo before we left and they were disgusting and stank. Put me off going back.

So so bacon sandwiches. Also don't ever expect to get an opportunity to even attempt to purchase a ticket to one of their gigs. They'll say they're going on sale but they go from being "on sale soon" to "unavailable" without a find tickets button or option ever being made available.
