I was really looking forward to trying the smash burgers here but unfortunately was completely disappointed by our visit. Luckily managed to find a table big enough for family of 4 with space for pram at side. After. A few minutes of confusion we realised you had to fetch own menus and order at bar. The burgers sounded great and I was pleased the kids menu was very reasonable. We ordered two burger from the main menu, side of beer battered onion rings and a kids burger. The burgers looked great, husband loved his but I found it far too greasy and the amount of fat dripping out of it was off putting and messy. Son loved his. The onion rings on the other hand were revolting, again fat dripping out, batter was not crispy and the were lacking in flavour. Something had seriously gone wrong, maybe a one off and we were unlucky? We also had a pint each. It was nice enough but I felt the £5 per pint price tag was a little on the steep side… maybe they’ve only recently put the prices up due to inflation or has it been £5 for a while?

Called in for the first time today after a bracing walk along the seafront. No acknowledgment from staff as we went in, had to ask if it was ok to sit at a table. No one told us it wasn’t table service, so after waiting an age - found some menus (filthy by the way) and went to order. Three young people behind the counter, not interested in being there and chatting amongst themselves. Deigned to look up and serve me, very unfriendly and not helpful at all. Had to get my own drink out of the fridge, no napkins and no salt (had run out! Of salt? Really?) Can’t fault the food, was delicious. Really tasty. Have a word with your staff guys, you e got a gem but they let you down.

We visited this morning for the first time, a Saturday morning treat to start the weekend. We entered to see 3 staff gathered round the till area, no greeting, nod or even acknowledgement We were there so we took a seat and waited. No menu on the table so I approached the staff and interrupted their conversation to ask for one. A grunt followed along with a gesture of the had towards another table, I asked again to be told there's one on that table. I felt extremely uncomfortable because of the rude staff so left without ordering. What a disappointment

This cafe ought to update its opening hours properly. On the basis of reviews here and the fact that tripadvisor said "Open now", we walked out from Tynemouth at lunch-time on 30 December. It's quite some way out along the seafront, maybe 15 minutes walk. We found it shuttered up, so had to walk all the way back. The two-way walk put us in the middle of the lunchtime rush, so finding an alternative with space to sit took quite a while.

This place makes an impressive array of food for such a tiny kitchen. The food is also tasty for grown ups and for kids. The venue is tiny but cute and lends itself to an amazing game of I spy. It always seems to offer a nice ale, but the coffee is perhaps the worst in the universe, literally a micro litre of coffee in a mug of Luke warm milky water. I can’t understand how other reviewers can call this nice. My friends and I (4 of us) were utterly bemused at the coffee. I can recommend a nice cup of tea with the lovely food though!

After a long debate on trying to find a place to get breakfast early on a Sunday (with most of the places in North Shields being shut & not open until 10am) we had a drive down to the coast & spotted the Surfcafé in Tynemouth. I had a massive craving for a bacon sandwich – which I got with sausages as an extra item… it tasted delicious (especially the sausages)! My mate went for the full English & omg it looked amazing & they kindly let me have their black pudding & grilled tomatoes. From the amount I did try I can soundly say all the ingredients tasted super fresh & even though this place is quite small (there’s approx. 6 tables inside) for an early morning breakfast & some salty coastal air I will definitely be back!

I have tried the Surfcafe off and on for the last year or so, and sadly it has gone so far downhill it seems like a different place to what it used to be. It used to be a welcoming little spot with good food, but it’s now badly let down by the staff, who are unfriendly and just plain lazy. On our last visit, (much like other visits) the available tables were sticky, filled with empty cups, plates or leftover food. I can understand this if it’s busy, but it was a quiet afternoon and all available staff were behind the bar killing time by the looks of it. The reception here is fairly unwelcoming these days. I’m not sure if management changed, or staff turnover is bad, but until the attitude of the staff improves, this place has lost its charm.A shame as it used to be great!

Also loved all the surf and rock music memorabilia and an eclectic mix of international flags that included Brazil and Jamaica. Dog owners welcome, too, which is a bonus if you have a dog and you need a rest.Wasn't in Tynemouth long enough, but a regular said the main meals are reasonably priced and they have rock and indie music nights, which is another atttaction.

I'm not normally the biggest fan but these did looked really good and as they were warm out of the oven I couldn't resist. I'm so glad I did as it was the best cheese scone I've ever had. Discretely tucked away within the rather dilapidated remains of the old Plaza, this little bar / cafe is an absolute gem. I'm guessing that many people walk or drive by with no idea what they're missing. Strangely enough this is probably part of the appeal for regular customers. While I'm sure the owners would welcome as many people as possible through the door, part of the appeal here is that it hasn't yet become over-popular like some of the Tynemouth Village or Fish Quay bars and cafes. Most initially build their reputation with a degree of quirkiness and excellent customer service, only for the very secrets of their initial success to wane as a consequence of commercial expansion.

Had really good breakfasts here and also like to come for a drink. Often have open mic nights and gigs on but it's popular and sometimes it can be hard to get into this little room. Nice when you can though.

Love the breakfast here and so do the dogs. Wish the place was a bit bigger as you sometimes struggle to get a seat..

First visit to the Surf Cafe after being recommended to try it by lots of friends. Only regret is I wish I had visited this place sooner. The breakfasts are amazing, the food is of a high standard and portion sizes are very good. Presentation is great and you can tell you are eating quality food.

Went for breakfast this morning only to be told they had no bacon or sausage until the butcher delivered! So sadly we had to leave with an empty belly and having wasted £2.30 on parking. Staff were super friendly though!

Stopped off to refuel after a long drive and bracing walk on the beach and dip in the sea.We were met with plenty of choice on the menu and friendly and knowledgable staff to help cater for the vegan in the party-happy to adapt dishes to suit.Enjoyed a mozzarella and tomato flatbread and (vegan) nachos which were both tasty and homemade and great value for money.Cool music and chilled vibes made this an all round positive experience-highly recommended.

Was out for a walk this afternoon and stopped at this cafe for the first time. Have meant to stop previously. Sat outside. Good cappuchino. Not much choice of cakes as they had been busy earlier. Quite small venue but good service. Toilets could do with a little t l c. No drier or towel. Otherwise worth a stop when walking along the seafront. Prices good.

Passed this cafe/bar many times but today was the day we called in, located just opposite the boating lake & plenty of parking if driving, bigger inside than I imagined, customers were vying for the best seats outside to make the most of the glorious evening sunshine ☀️, they serve food, coffee & scones but we were in need of liquid refreshment, quick service, £5 for pint & a half, quirky & different, really liked it. Dog friendly too.

Ive been to this café times and I intend to visit again and I hope they put in this small recommendation Its great to find this little but busy café that welcomes dogs, not many around so thrilled that you can bring your pup, great when your with someone, not so when your sitting outside worried about your dogs safety, there is nothing to tie your dogs leads too (yes I did see the two little hooks but totally inadequate) I'm sorry to say , so you have no choice to tie the lead under the table leg, just unfortunate that the dog can upend the table with the hot coffee on it, whilst at the loo and smash it on the floor, breakfast comes which is lovely and fairly priced, shame that say £20 isn't re invested into something strong and sturdy dog rinds drilled to the wall or something HEAVY is close by so you know the dog will come to no harm, as I say it does get busy inside so you have no choice but to sit outside and sometimes you want to, its just awkward to leave your dog at times. yes I did clean up the smashed cup and apologised , once I explained the situation that the hooks have been ripped out of the wall ,or loose, they good of offered me a refill, . just something secure and I'm sure dog lover would feel better
