The food at the garden grill was really lovely - British cuisine at its best. I loved the venison, sea trout and my mum loved the lamb and steak. My daughter enjoyed the children’s menu too. The decor is gorgeous. The service is friendly and efficient. The breakfast is also served in the same room and is delicious too.

What a difference to the Mirabelle Restaurant at the same hotel! Ambiance and service were good although the service was brusque and one waiter a rude liar ; when we enquired where was the bread we ordered which he had obviously forgot about,he said in a loud voice ‘it is still being baked,be patient’,cold rolls then came to us that had obviously not just been baked! The food was rubbish, laughably bad,as was the wine, they charged £100 per head for a disgusting meal, the other restaurant in the hotel, the Mirabelle was the complete opposite and was the same price!

Four of us were there for a Sunday lunch. The restaurant was not busy and there appeared to be many staff available. Unfortunately the staff spent most of their time in the kitchen. Table service was poor and required me to visit the kitchens and pour our own wine. The food was OK but over priced. The service charge of £32 was insulting!!

Went to celebrate a birthday with family on the 31st May in the evening. The butter arrived but the bread didn’t we had to ask twice. The vegetarian starter arrived with Parmesan on it which is not vegetarian. It took 10mins for the dish to reappear. The beef came out without Yorkshire puddings they came when we asked. We then had coffee and the coffee pots leaked coffee granules. Having eaten at The Goring the same week this experience was very poor in comparison.

I bought my husband a £90 voucher for Sunday lunch which we used on17th March. It took 17minutes for starters to arrive and 38 for main course. On querying delay we were told we arrived after a LARGE party(there were 7 in this Party)On leaving(3 hours later)we were presented with a bill for £50!!!SO wrong..then corrected to £22 for water,a tea and a coffee.Connor the manager seemed to abdicate responsibility, Luke was only articulate waiter(why no females?)WHY are they charging £5.45,£5.25 for coffee, tea plus petite fours(2 chocolates)Absolute rip off. We will not be returning

Sadly not a buffet anymore. Surprised that there were only two other people in there but maybe I shouldn’t have been after what happened. I was escorted to my seat and I asked if it was still a buffet and was told yes, yes it was even though it all looked a bit empty. So I was very surprised when she came back and gave me a menu. I politely enquired that ordering from a set menu wasn’t a buffet and she began getting very stroppy and saying “Is still buffet!” So I left straight away Either they don’t understand what the dictionary definition of “buffet” means or they are trying to con people. Either way, I would recommend using Buffet Time by the station instead and giving this place a miss

The service was dreadful. We waited 40 for a pre dinner drink. The young waiter was rude when we asked to forget it as our food had arrived. The service does not match the cost of dinner and really ruined our experience. Only three tables occupied with plenty of staff so not really sure why it was so awful. Food wasn’t that hot for one of our group either. A very mediocre experience. 😢

We stayed at the hotel and ate in a he restaurant for two of the three nights. Next time we’ll eat there every night! As a family of 4 with two children under the age of 6 and a severe nut/peanut allergy, we felt they catered for us all. I didn’t see any peanuts on the menu and speaking to the bar staff where they did serve peanuts they were very well trained in cross contamination. The restaurant is a fantastic room, full of charm and really comfortable. The children were made to feel very welcome. To our surprise, as a resident, the children ate for free too. The kids menu had everything you’d expect for them and wonderful desserts! We had 3 courses, all faultless! Clearly a great chef and team. The som was also very attentive . The front of house and the waiters were all fantastic. Thank you!

We looked forward to this meal in a grand environment. We came to an empty dining room and were seated. The food was lovely and service was professional and friendly. 20 minutes later a second couple arrived, and they were seated 12 inches away from us, in an empty dining room. And this dining room is huge. Suddenly our conversation level had to be lower, and the couple on the table next to us spoken in hushed voices too Why did the restaurant do this? It was not busy all evening so there was no need at all to crowd us. The questionnaire sent afterwards asked if we thought they were Covid safe. What? Does the restaurant even know the basics of this? Sitting a couple right next to us when there is sufficient space for safer eating? This restaurant ruined a lovely meal. We did not linger. The atmosphere was just weird. We told the manager of our disappointment and nothing was offered to explain or compensate for £85 wasted. We ate elsewhere other nights and had relaxed meals

I reviewed The Garden two years ago and I didn’t change my opinion this time. If you’re wanting, slick, efficient service, this isn’t the place for you. The service here is friendly and a little erratic, but rather sweet. A very young man, who wasn’t exactly a sommelier attended to our drinks. He’s clearly learning the business and he was a trifle nervous, but very polite and charming. Waiting staff service was variable, from smiley, friendly waitresses to one with a degree of patronisation which was irritating. A mature gentleman was acting as maitre d’ - a perfectly nice fellow, but who appeared to be a little unsure of himself. We appreciated the linens and the peaceful ambiance and the food was good, without being inspiring. The menu is a little dull and might well be geared to the mostly elderly clientele. Cooking was competent and my Guinea fowl was tasty. It’s a very reliable place and very nice to relax and enjoy a dinner with friends.

It was a pleasant surprise when I found out we could have 3 course lunch menu at The Grand Hotel’s The Garden Restaurant during our trip to Eastbourne. It was a welcome treat, dining with excellent food at such a historic hotel. We had the Chicken liver parfait and the Goats cheese tart to start, personally I preferred the tart over the parfait but both dishes were beautifully presented. Then, for the main course, we had the Grilled Salmon over Spinach and Prawn Risotto alongside a Rib-eye Steak (which you can upgrade to for a reasonable supplement). Finally, we finished up with some sweet and tasty desserts. This easily was our best meal in Eastbourne for a reasonable price of £35 per person for a 3 course set meal over lunch. I strongly recommend a visit to The Garden Restaurant if you ever find yourself in Eastbourne, it’s worth it!

We arrived at the restaurant to find that our party of 9 had been split into 2 tables of 6 admittedly a few of our party were unable to come but on telling this to the head waiter we were still told to sit at these tables. Half our party unfortunately were delayed in the very heavy traffic due to the rail strike that was on that day. (It had taken us an hour just to get there from Willingdon!) The rest of the restaurant was pretty much empty and we asked several times to move to the bigger round table behind us but were ignored. Time was ticking on and still the rest of our party had not arrived, the head waiter kept hassling us to order our food. We kept explaining that it wasn't their fault they were late and could we wait a bit to be told that we had to get our orders in by 2pm. Considering the restaurant was mainly empty you would think that they could have done with custom from 9 diners!! When the rest of the party finally arrived my cousin insisted that we all move to one table as we wouldn't have been able to chat to everyone and my sister who lives in Australia hadn't been back here for 5 years. The head waiter grumbled and was obviously extremely put out by this and very grudgingly allowed us to move. The table had not been set up properly but instead of the 3 waiters and head waiter helping us we had to get cutlery, napkins etc ourselves and pour our own wine!! The food was wonderful thankfully and the bill very high which they would've missed out on if they'd had their way!! But we really should say that we did not like the attitude of the head waiter and he really should not be chewing gum whilst in service.

This restaurant is elegant and should have real atmosphere, however our evening meal was spoilt because there was a freeing blast of cold air for the whole duration of our meal. The effect was that our food went cold very quickly and although the quality and presentation were good we were unable to enjoy our meal. Other also complained about the draught and the cold conditions, but no offer to move us to another table was made, despite the large room being only about 30%occupied.. When the Head waiter gave us the bill to sign he had not taken our Elite Diners discount off despite having been given the card. No apology was forthcoming for the problems we had with cold table and food and no reduction was made for this. (When we told the check out desk they immediately removed the service charges from our final bill) At Breakfast in the restaurant the next day we ere seated by the same Head Waiter at the next table where they other couple had complained about the draught and we were cold again! The service was slow my wife had completed her continental breakfast before and order was taken for my cooked one and a long delay occurred before it arrived. It should not have been necessary for my to have to ask for muy order to be taken, if I had been travelling on business this delay would have been entirely unacceptable.

This restaurant is situated in the Grand Hotel. It is in a very large dining room and ‘grand’ is an apt description. The tables are a good size but are placed a bit too close together for my liking which doesn’t seem necessary in such a large room. One thing that annoys me is that when I come here and it’s not that busy, the waiters always seat everyone close together. Whether they do this because they believe people prefer it in a large room, or whether it is to make it easier for them to serve, I don’t know but it irritates me. The menu is quite limited but is perfectly adequate. The problem is that the same description can be given to the quality of the food. The prices reflect the grandiose room and everything that goes with that but if the food is not good enough(and it’s not) it doesn’t work. I come here occasionally because it’s a pleasant venue but the food just is not good enough. My fish cake was boring, my pheasant ok but for £30 ok is not good enough. Nowadays you can get much better quality for a lot less. I enjoyed it but £50/head without alcohol is not really worth it!

My friends and I had a rather good lunch in The Garden Restaurant. We were seated near the window, which was good, and we had good, professional service throughout. I had a lovely, very special, fishcake starter and then fillet steak. We had puddings and two bottles of nice, not exceptional wines, and we were a bit surprised by the bill - over £300 for 4, but we were too full of bonhomie to worry too much.

We have been going to the garden restaurant for 20 years now, on average 2-3 times a month, for lunch and special occasions, in particular our golden wedding three years ago. This was our first dining post lockdown, the service was poor, in times gone by a waiter would offer bread rolls from a basket, now a couple of rolls appeared on a small plate. We only had a main course each which was OK but underwhelming, a couple sitting at the next table placed their order with a G&T aperitif, which failed to arrive, after about 15 minutes the waiter returned advising them that their starter order was unavailable, would they accept something else, they just walked out. When I went to pay they tried to charge me double for the main course! after profuse apologies we left. All this in a '5 star' hotel. It is very sad to see the place to go downhill, I do not blame the staff, as far as I am concerned this is not down to the staff, but with management

Excellent service in restaurant, friendly and efficient. Some diners ignore dress code - so next time I'll wear jeans. Picked Table d'Hote menu, which was good value. Most food was excellent. The experience was let down by the quality of the cooking which was barely up to that of an enthusiastic but low-skilled home cook. The menu looks OK at first sight but the descriptions flatter mundane dishes unimaginatively cooked. I made a late booking over a long weekend when I learnt that my son his girlfriend and her parents from Korea would be visiting Chester. Most places were heavily booked. The restaurant at the MB was almost empty - obviously others knew more than I did. I wanted somewhere with a pleasant environment and a garden view. The Mollington Banastre restaurant looks out over a lawn -that was OK -but the hotel seems to suffer from a lack of investment. The front car-park is heavily potholed thereby offering a poor impression on first arrival at the hotel. The ambience was OK and the lady who took our orders for drinks and meals was pleasant and efficient. So : service good, ambience OK, quiet enough in the restaurant for conversations (few other guests!) but the cooking needs to improve greatly both in range and execution. I make these comments recognizing that the restaurant is pitching itself as mid-range but at £165 for six (most of us had only two courses no coffee) I found the evening a disappointment.

Stayed two nights at the Grand and the Breakfast was truly amazing, although self serve buffet style this dinning room had everything you could wish for. Although buffet style the quality of the food was excellent.

Was Okay! Ambience was nice! But afternoon tea over rated! then a 10% service charge. Which makes a expensive afternoon tea....

Dined in restaurant whilst staying at hotel for three nights. (see separate review of hotel) Garden restaurant is used for breakfast, lunch & dinner. Breakfasts were very good with an abundant supply of quality produce. The evening meal is "fine dining" and the meal enjoyed by both my wife, who is vegetarian, and myself was of excellent quality. Waiting staff were professional and friendly.

A return visit to the Garden Restaurant for lunch was a disappointment. The Hotel is is imposing, 'Grand' and worthy of the title. The reception area, lounges, dining areas and restaurant are imposing and impressive. The Garden restaurant is imposing, dynamic is a classic style with high ceiling, pillars and beautiful curtains. It is stunningly appointed. Visually it is very upmarket and entrancing. The waiting staff are in formal dress with impeccable grace when serving. Unfortunately they were not as vigilent or alert as they ought to be. They were slow to respond and serve. The service was slow on a not very busy day and the main course was only warm. There was an offer to take it back to the kitchen. I witnessed lack of coordination when other tables were being serve which delayed the clients starting their meals. Empty plates were not cleared appropriately despite staff standing about. I waited over 25 minutes for a sweet to be served and then the waiter was petulant when he arrived. A bad attitude which did nothing to enhance the atmosphere. Then the bill was wrong as we were overcharged on two items! It was not their finest hour. The following week coffee and drinks in the lounge was excellent.

We have been to this restaurant a few times before and each time it has been excellent. It reminds you of an old style high end restaurant and ball room. The food is perfect and the staff are friendly and seem to enjoy excelling at what they do. It is relatively expensive but you get what you pay for and well worth it.

We went midweek for supper when the vast, grand restaurant was fairly empty and the diners were spread around with minimal staff so getting attention was not easy. Ambitious menu, mediocre food which arrived tepid despite silver domes to keep it warm, vastly overpriced. Filo pastry so tough that a steak knife would have been helpful, soggy Rosti and gravy lacking in depth. Sorbets delicious. We wouldn’t eat there again. I gather afternoon tea is good but we had an incredibly disappointing and overpriced meal.

My partner is gluten free and vegetarian which is a shocking thing for the chef in this restaurant. There is clearly a lack of understanding when it comes to food allergies. We have been a number of times over the past few years and it seems like the menu NEVER changes. Its the same thing year after year. Risotto seems to the thing that's offered in a hotel of this standard, Im not a chef and I turn out the most amazing melas gf and vegetarian with very little thought. Not a good choice to eat if you have any food allergies. As a meat eater my meal was sub standard, steak very tough and served cold. Yeah not a good experience again.

Eight of us got together for my mother-in-law's 80th birthday dinner. Set menu was extremely reasonable at £42 per head. Choices were good with something to suit all tastes with an option to mix and match with the a la carte menu if desired. Quality of the food was very good as was the service. House wine was very drinkable and didn't break the bank.

My friend and I had the more extensive tea with a sandwich each, cut into quarters, each with a different filling. We thought this was mean, as most special teas have unlimited sandwiches - also the bread was supermarket sliced white and not nice. There were 2 scones each - and - really mean ! - a tablespoon of jam, and a tablespoon of cream in 2 tiny pots to SHARE for FOUR scones !! There were other cakes to fill you up, but the polenta cake was very dry. Frankly, at £30 each, we wer both disappointed, and did not consider it value for money. Also, we had to wait nearly 30 minutes before any food turned up !

Five of us had the Xmas lunch today, Friday 14th December. We thoroughly enjoyed every mouthful and service as always was excellent. An extra lovely touch was the very well selected house French merlot; it was delicious and very reasonably priced along with the Xmas set menu. Living over an hour away from Eastbourne, this restaurant is worth travelling to and is certainly mine and my partners favourite place to dine, given the opulent surroundings and very pleasant and attentive staff. Well done everyone at the Grand Hotel, you make us very welcome! Thank you

Disappointing from the start. Had to ask at reception to find a staff member to seat us, very quiet and a huge space for a few tables occupied. Wine choice not available, Feather blade beef had lump of fat in the middle and it was incredibly poor portion size, taste and quality. There was a large party in another function suite but this should not interfere with service or food. Breakfast was equally bad. Buffet cooked food was dry and empty trays which were not readily filled. No condiments. Very poor choice of cereals and a Beige table held cereal but no museli or natural yoghurts. Staff x 2 visible but not helpful and not able to bring food out warm in time for my breakfast. Residents wandering around looking for plates, Sauce, waiting for beans etc it wasn’t pleasant! Overall I wouldn’t recommend this hotel and it’s a shame as price fair and position handy.

The Ship should be a great local pub, but sadly nobody can go with dogs. Huge mistake. It shows how lacking they are in being all inclusive. I go to the Pilot who love dogs and even supply dog treats and plenty of water bowls.

Small L shaped room with usual characteristics of wether spoons establishments. Usual tap beers and real ales available. Pleasantly decorated and the staff were friendly and polite. Beer was good. Good visit.
