I would give two stars for the food and one star for table etiquette. We were unimpressed when we sat down to a table setting of basic low-quality, stamped-out flatware with sharp edges. Three of us ordered meat (duck, pork and beef), the other fish. No alternative, appropriate knives were brought to suit the food, nor was the cutlery replaced after the starter. There were splotches of dried food debris on the underside of all the placemats, which apparently never gets wiped off when they are stacked. The food itself was okay, but portions were on the small side and overpriced for what it was, e.g. two slices of duck breast, 1" slice of sea bass, very little vegetable to accompany. The chicken liver parfait starter was good but came with only three small slices of toasted baguette and bread was £6 extra. There was an abundance of wait staff operating on high-speed settings. We had trouble understanding what kept so many staff on the run (literally) given the restaurant was not full and could have been disruptive were it a romantic dinner for two. We just watched the show. Overall, a four-star restaurant should pay more attention to detail, quality and cleanliness, if it wants to have a four-star reputation.

It never bodes well when the soup of the day is tomato and basil. Could you make any less effort other than maybe carrot and coriander? English speakers were thin on the ground which meant conveying a food allergy caused a puzzled look although once a native speaker was found things moved on well enough in this regard. The portions were very poor indeed although quite ample when the food is so sad. Tasteless pate, soggy brioche toast, tiny duo of fish accompanied by 2 tiny oatcakes, over cooked pork belly and many less than mille in the millefeuille are just some of the lowlights. Coupled with a waiter who needed clean clothes or a shower(both most likely) this was less than Scotland at its best. This was Fawlty Towers’ food both in its style and presentation. The hotel’s restaurant has not benefitted from its change of owner and at £91 for 2 set menu meals (all that is offered!) including a mid priced bottle of wine I would advise you think better and go to the excellent chippy instead!

Less than 24 hours ago I was posting congratulations to the Hotel and stating that they were back on track. 24 hours later I need to retract that. We were happy to order a drink at the bar whilst a table was being set in the conservatory. Before we ordered our drink we were told that our table was ready and were shown to our table. The server brought us the menus and I asked for two pre dinner drinks whilst we looked at the menu. Our order was taken for drinks and we were told that there no specials were left. We were left with the same menu as the previous evening. A little disappointing but there was a good enough choice. 5 mins after we ordered our drinks the server returned and asked if we ready to order. I said not yet but could we have our pre dinner drinks first. 15 mins later the server returned- still no drinks but we thought it would be safe to order our meal. 10 mins later still no drinks but guess what our starters arrived. I sent them back asking them to be served after we had our pre dinner drinks. 15 minutes later no sign of any drinks. We left. Spoke to the duty manager registered my complaint. Message to general manager- make sure you have sufficient staff on duty to deal with high volume of customers. Waiting over 45 minutes for a drink is unacceptable

We visit the hotel once a year and eat at the Garden Restuarant during our stay. Over the last few years the menu has always read well and been full of promise but failed to deliver however that has changed and how. The restaurant offers a set menu with the option to have one (£17.95), two (£23.95) or three (£29.95) courses which is not cheap but then you are dining in a hotel so a bit of a captive market. Some items do include supplements (mainly steak) but there is plenty of choice on the menu to allow you to avoid paying additional costs. Another feature of the menu is the Chef's dish of the day (an option available for starter, main and dessert). We opted for the Chef's dish of the day for our main course - braised ox cheeks in a red wine jus and it was delicious. The meat was well cooked and fell apart when you cut into it. The red wine jus was substantial and very flavoursome. The starter and dessert courses were equally delicious. Service was good and our server was very attentive but not obtrusive The hotel is about to change hands and will no longer be a Hilton Hotel so it will be interesting to see what happens in the kitchen but for now, the food is delicious and worth a visit.

This week I stayed at the Hilton Dunkeld house hotel and had my dinner and breakfast at this restaurant. Dinner served as prefixed courses rates, 2 courses £23.95, 3 courses £29.95. I ordered soup of the day as starter, Ribeye steak as main. Steak dish costs additional £11. Soup and steak delicious, steak served with chunky chips, mushrooms and tomatoes. Chips too chunky! Overall costs £34.95. Staff attentive. Buffet breakfast served here, I preferred full English. All essential dishes there. Omelettes cooked for order, I had ham and mushrooms omelette, one of the most delicious omelette I ever had. Bacons bit of rubbery, other than everything perfect. I enjoyed the food here.

We have one of the lodges at the Hilton Dunkeld so luckily we can walk here as its is a long walk to get here from the main street on Dunkeld. Recommend driving there. We have eaten here previously over the years and the food and service was not really that great. However something must have changed as the staff many of which are from the UK were very helpful and the lunch we had was really great. I went for the ribeye steak with all the extras. Delicious and well priced :)

Visited recently for lunch. Went for the 2 course for 11.95 and was disappointed. Restaurant quality served at lunchtime, attention to detail and quality food. Attentive staff. The hotel itself has character and probably looked better tears ago but most country hotels are similar unless millions are thrown at them. Would highly recommend.

We had booked a dinner and breakfast deal while staying at the Hilton. We arrived at the hotel about 9:10PM. We weren't too worried because the web site said that orders were taken until 9:45. However, that's now changed to 9:30. We went to the restaurant at 9:15 and it was obvious that they didn't want any more customers or work! Grudgingly they allowed to have a table and gave us menus. Rather than take our orders quickly because of the time they left us sitting there for some time. We both opted to start with smoked salmon which was good but not much of it and no bread and butter. I wanted sea bass but that was off so went for the pork. The pork itself was OK but it came with various cloying sauces that did nothing for the meal. My wife had the rabbit and mushroom pasta which was much better. Service was slow and the food was only good. Desserts looked huge but we were too tired to try.

Great Hotel , but restaurant was a BIG let down , we advised my wife was coeliac and was told this would not be a problem and we were given the gluten free menu , However the soup had barley in it , when we raised our concern with the restaurant manager Chris, He advised it was gluten free . When i advised again that my wife was coeliac he said we should have asked for the Coeliac menu , i requested this menu but unsurprisingly it didnt exist !! His response to our concerns was unprofessional at best !

Don't know where to start with this!! Gave plenty of notice that one of our party was veggie, but it seems like they just don't care Firstly, the lazy stuff. Clearly the menu changes day to day,but on this day both veggie starter and main were the practically the same dish, not clever! Worse, on asking about the desserts I was told none of them on the menu were suitable and could have some sorbet instead. I couldn't have been made feel less welcome Secondly and much worse, the complete lack of knowledge and training. The manager seems to think that a small disclaimer on the bottom of the menu fulfills 'Scottish Law' (actually the new law is a European law) Maybe if all staff are fully trained that's ok, but we went through four members of staff who clearly didn't know, and I was bought out a main course that had an unwelcome garnish (not on the menu description I may add) of non veggie cheese (parmesan) If the manager thinks this is acceptable then I can only see problems in the future for this restaurant but during my conversation with him he was more interested in getting me to accept the sorbet than actually accept any points. I'd also question that if a 'disclaimer' is suitable then why does your all day menu in my room (clearly a group menu??) do things so much better and is marked accordingly? Can you tell me how your disclaimer worked when you serve me up parmesan AFTER I have a clear discussion with several staff members, and then whilst trying to make a point about the poor accommodation of vegetarians, one girl walks away.....???? Several large chain restaurants have moved away from disclaimers and now mark accordingly so we'll have to disagree on whether you really are meeting the requirements of the new law! The manager told me they would learn from this and it wouldn't happen again but they haven't learned from two years ago when a staff member told me rather patronisingly that the desserts had no meat in them!!! With that in mind I can only recommend that anyone with special dietary requirements gives this restaurant a wide berth for their own benefit which is a shame because it's a good setting and the food is good (when they eventually get it right)

I know this hotel well and have had Christmas Dinner here several times. We usually get good service and a good meal. However, this was not the case this year (2014).I had asked some months previously when I paid the deposit whether our group could be accommodated in the large main room as opposed to the characterless add on area. I was assured that every effort would be made to do so.So we arrived at the desk on the day to be escorted to our table. It was clear no effort whatsoever had been made to house us in the main room, so we found ourselves in the add on area, where the jazz band could not be heard AT ALL. Having paid £65 a head for the meal we expected it to be fairly decent. However the only waiter/waitress who seemed to have any clue what he was doing was the wine waiter, who could not be faulted. I had to wonder whether any of the others had any waiter/waitress experience whatsoever. They really didn't have a clue. Examples would be walking off without taking my order, having taken everybody else's. Then bringing the desert of Christmas pudding and asking "who ordered the sticky toffee pudding?", and standing there for thirty seconds repeating herself whilst we all looked at each other blankly. Sticky toffee pudding wasn't even on the menu.As for the food, the starter was reasonable. We sat there for a minute or two having finished our starter, as you do. Then, as if there was a competition as to who could do it the fastest, our starter plates were whisked away and IMMEDIATELY replaced by our main course. No chance even to take a breath. I thought this was unusual, to say the least. The main course consisted of two smallish circles of turkey roll, (no it wasn't even fresh turkey) three under-cooked potatoes, two (or possibly three) sprouts, and a medium sized carrot. With gravy. To cap it all, the waitress even came round and gave each of us one teaspoonful of cranberry sauce, then whisked away the bowl. The cranberry sauce wasn't even on the table for us to serve ourselves.Having consumed this debacle of a main course I was then subjected to the desert. Mistakenly I had Christmas pudding. I was served a half inch thick slab of what I believe was Christmas pudding. It really could have passed for anything. It was covered in something resembling custard which was supposed to be brandy flavoured. If it was I couldn't taste it. And it was all stone cold.Feeling thoroughly disillusioned and ripped off, we sat there for a while waiting for coffee. It was not offered so we decided to move to the lounge area. On the way I asked four waiters whether coffee was included in the meal. ALL FOUR replied that they did not know. So I went to the restaurant desk and asked the important looking lady the same question. SHE DID NOT KNOW. She then started dialling the telephone to ask an even more important person the same question. At that point I walked off in disgust.Having endured without doubt the worst Christmas dinner in my life, several things have become very clear to me.1. I will not be having another Christmas dinner here, or any other meals for that matter.2. Whilst I appreciate it is a difficult task to feed several hundred people within a three hour time frame, there is no excuse for shoddy waiters/waitresses, nor is there any excuse for poor quality food dressed up to look like something it is not.3. £65 x 7 = £455. The worst value for money I have ever experienced.

This is the 3rd visit we have made to the restaurant within the Hilton Dunkeld House after the Etape Caledonian race. We gave it a miss last year in the hope that they would get their act together. No such luck.Every visit has been booked as there has been a group of us. Every time the staff are unprepared for a table our size arriving (between 9 & 13 of us in different years). Every time we have a huge wait for menus to be produced, for orders to be taken, for drinks to arrive and for food to arrive. One year our puddings never came at all as the kitchen staff had all left. This year the orders were muddled up. The wrong food brought to the table. Orders lost. And when the food did come the best dish was mediocre. This was a Sunday & 3 of us ordered the Sunday Roast. It was shockingly bad. The meal was lukewarm at best. The yorkshire puddings were burnt. The vegetables mush.I remember this hotel in its heyday. It can be an amazing experience. The setting alone is worth the visit. But tragically the restaurant & staff are incapable of providing anything more. The staff seemed to have all been trained to just keep apologising & then it won't matter how bad things are.We were not charged for the children in our party. This does not help. We are all happy to pay the full bill. What we want is a halfway decent experience. We will not be giving them a 4th chance. There has to be somewhere else in the area that can cope with a large party looking for good food.

The hotel could not have a more idyllic location right on the banks of the Tay. The entrances, small lounge area and the patio are all stunning and whilst the dining room certainly has outlook and character it is huge and the atmosphere could be vastly improved and made a bit more intimate by an element of curtaining/sectioning off. However, our simple Sunday lunch was first class, the roast excellent and at £12.99 for two courses including a glass of wine, extremely good value.

We went to the Hilton Dunkeld House for Easter Monday Lunch. It was a buffet style with starte, mains and puddings. Starters all cold- salad, pate, salmon and a cold meat selection-nothing at all for the vegetarian apart from salad. I thought this was very poor considering its a Hilton hotel. Mains were boiled new potatoes a great selection of cooked veg ( carrot, turnip, brocolli, parsnips, runner beans, mange touts) then a veggie lasagne, beef in gravy, salmon in holandaise or pork in a grain mustard sauce. Pudding were a selection of mini desserts a caramel thing, a muffin type cake , lemon tart or a raspberry meringue. These were nice light and small just enough for an end meal.We had this served with a crisp dry prosecco which bubbled in hubby's glass but not mine. The service was good and efficent with no problems. We got to have a little peak at 2 sets of parents and their offspring trying out the selections for their up coming wedding in August. The portions on those looked massive and was good to see what else they did and not just the buffet. The Garden restaurant overlooks the Tay in a nice rural country setting. Worth a visit if passing would give it a 3/4 dots better than average but not a very good yet for the lack of vegetarian starters.

Although the staff were very friendly and attentive the menu selection for dinner over 3 nights became boring and repetitive as it did not change and if it was not for a staff member suggesting that we can eat off the bar menu then we would not have enjoyed going back into the Garden Restaurant again. The breakfast buffet had plenty of variety but the hot food was mainly warm to cold and let the whole beakfast experience down.

We had lunch when staying for a week in one of the lodges in the grounds. As part of the hotel we had high hopes for the food and service – however unfortunately were let down on both. Fish and chips for £12 (lunch) was of the heated up frozen food variety – and the steak pie (also £12 for lunch) was tasteless. Poor quality produce, not seasoned or hot enough – it was worse than school dinners. And very expensive too – which would have been ok had the food or service been adequate. Had the staff come to speak to us or clear our plates we would have complained however the poor and un-attentive service matched the food.

The food here bears little resemblance to the menu description. The portions are very small, very few vegetables, quite a lot of the food is actually rather tasteless, and a lot of it is clearly pre prepared and then heated up (yes I mean you 'Pork Loin with calvados jus').If it was not included in the hotel stay, I would not bother - it is not worth the highish price.

We enjoyed two excellent dinners at the Terrace Restaurant. We had an enjoyable lunch at the Bein Inn. My partner said his burger was good, his purple coleslaw looked appealing and I have to say his chips (something neither of us is fond of) were probably the best we've had. I ordered a chicken fajita, which was the most unusual I've ever had: *everything*, including the rice (either pilau or basmati, not long grain as I'd expect), wrapped up in one big dod with three sauces on the side. It tasted fine and was filling, but looked tragi-comical. The young waitress warned us they had no avocados, but on questioning thought they may have guacamole; however it was substituted with some kind of chutney, which was ok if unconventional. On the plus side, it all seemed to have actually been cooked rather than banged into a microwave, which we appreciated. The service was good and friendly, and our food arrived in a timely manner, noting that we arrived at the beginning of Friday lunchtime when it was quiet. We're not in a hurry to go back, as the menu was limited and a bit overpriced, at least for my weird offering at £17. There seemed to be some renovation work going on in the entrance area, all good, but didn't add to the ambience. We'd originally looked into this for a Sunday lunch, which seems popular with others, would possibly try it for that in future.

Avoid at all costs, I asked for a carrot cake to be heated( I have done this numerous times before) first guy said we can’t (I think he was training- so no problem) other guy said yes let me take it for you. The coffee took 5 to 10 minutes so carrot cake was cold, I asked for a re-heat and was refused after spending £18 plus for 2 coffees and 2 cakes. He said the chef recommended it cold - I can’t eat cold cake as it’s too dry and I have no saliva due to cancer treatment - do I feel like explaining this, no. I was here to collect a winter coat, I treat myself to something every year, never will I frequent House of bruer again, extreme reaction ? - No. I said to coffee guy I’ll speak to manager he replied “good luck then sir” I’m fuming.

Last time I was here the fish and chips was really good. Afraid to say this time my wife had the fish and chips and it was cafe standard at best. I had the mac and cheese and I have to say this was the worst mac and cheese I have ever had in my life. Microwaved with what little sauce there was at the bottom of the bowl. The parmesan was probably fresh about a week ago and been sitting out since then. We won’t be bac. Pity as we are local. Staff (waiter, bar staff and receptionist) were pleasant enough though and can’t fault them at all.
