On arrival to sit outside the table required cleaning. We asked the waiter if he could possibly clean the table (politely). He replied he was too busy. No other communication and never returned. We asked another waiter to wipe the table which he did but with one wipe. I live in Bath and proud of the city attractions. I was accompanied with friends from another part of the country. Not a great impression. Staff need to be trained not only in how to clean tables but how they interact with customers. Regrettably on this occasion it was poor!

The setting is lovely. Staff polite but service very poor and dirty tables - the table we sat at never got wiped cleaned. We got brought drinks to us twice that were not ours this we did find rather amusing as we hadn’t even got round to ordering yet. Lovely ambience but the management seriously need to train the staff with some basic serving practices - it wouldn’t take much to wipe the table when drinks/food is brought to the table. Such a shame as this could be an amazing place to dine due to the setting. Also the toilets need to be cleaned more regularly.

It’s a shame service is so poor (stood waiting whilst cashier finished chatting) and food selection so limited because it’s setting and location is very good. Used to be quite a bit better, but now really does need to try harder

Whatever has happened to this cafe? It's true it has never been as good as the little cafe that used to be in the hut at the side, but the staff were friendly and the food fine, if the service was a bit slow. So when members of my family were down, we had no hesitation in recommending this as a place for a light snack and a place for us all to meet up before they set off home. But first of all they were told there were no savouries or puddings left, only cakes - at 1.30 on a Sunday afternoon! - and then the service was unbelievably slow. Even for coffees, they had to be chased up twice. Perhaps the problem was that they were running out of crockery, having dropped trays of it twice - at least one with, we think, our coffees. The third crash was when a cover for cakes went flying. At least it was entertaining. The ladies loo was poor too. One cubicle was out of action, no one was checking on essentials such as toilet rolls, and the room smelt of drains. As someone who lives close, and has used this cafe off and on for some time, I was shocked and disappointed in the deterioration. What saves this review from being only one star is that the staff were polite and apologetic, but the Holburne management really need to take a hard look at the situation. I was embarrassed at having suggested they went there.

Very disappointed that the events manager had forgotten my booking for 20 guest who were staying in Bath and were expecting brunch the day after my daughters wedding. Despite 2 emails and 2 conversations and visits by me to confirm my booking. Unbelieveable! The staff on the day rushed around last minute trying to do their best to accomodate us (thank you Marius) but the promised cakes and extra food were not avavailbe and 20 hungry people had to settle for a croissant or pastry.

Lovely setting and fabulous museum but visit to cafe for tea/coffee very disappointing. Tables piled with dirty crockery even though there seemed to be quite a few staff working. Had to ask several times to have table cleared. Cake offering limited. Such a shame - hope there will be a bit of an overhaul and support from management to make this the great cafe it has the potential to be.

Very slow service, given number of staff around long wait to be served and then long wait for food to arrive. Not a place to come if you’re in a hurry! Had coffee and cake - both ok, but definitely better coffee to be had elsewhere in Bath. Prices probably upper end of average for Bath. Would not return and would not recommend.

My family group arrived at the Holburne 3pm on Saturday 15th April to celebrate my father's birthday (dad died in 2010 but it's become family tradition to celebrate the occasion). A sign on the door read 'The cafe will be closing at 4pm today with last orders at 3:30pm. We are sorry for the inconvenience'. So we arrived at the counter at 3:15pm only to be told they were no longer serving. We replied we were happy to just have drinks but the answer was the same. It was a lovely day and Sydney Gardens was the perfect place to celebrate the occasion. VERY disappointed!

Great tasting coffee but since change in management and being “Short Staffed” the counter service is a joke. Sunny Sunday afternoon - Arrive and ask about food, sorry kitchen closes at 3pm- it was 2:59. Ok that’s fine I can work with cake. Get to till to order cake, the guy at the till says “sorry no cake, only croissants you can see on the counter”. Fine I’ll have a coffee and croissant. As that’s arriving at my table the counter team pull out a box of carrot cake and proceed to put it out on the counter!! Honestly, you couldn’t make it up

Ultra modern cafe with high glass ceilings & garden seating if none available inside. I had an excellent roasted tomato soup & my friend had the BLT & we both had a Flat White. All the food in the display case was tired and either limp or curling on arrival at 12.15 . The beef salad was off. The Buddha bowl had no dressing. The £15 cheese sharer board had 5 biscuits ,( odd number for sharing), about 4 curling batons of celery, 10 grapes and 6 slivers of 3 cheeses and no pickle. I queried about the portion size. Was it the £8 single portion or the £15 sharer? After checking our reciept and with the kitchen I was told that it was for 2. Mum ate the 1st platter. They offered me another platter as I was unhappy. It would take 10 minutes. 40 minutes later the platter arrived. The " pickle" was a slab of taseless jelly like glup. Certainly not a pickle. Expensive, tardy and tasteless.

Inside the impressive Holburne House - a superb exhibition/museum with many events free - this cafe is worth the 300m. walk along Pulteney Street from the famous bridge and past the fountain, recognisable in many costume dramas. Cannot fault the pot of builder's tea but the cakes - chocolate fudge cake & a fruit scone were terribly dry. Now, in my opinion...a chocolate fudge cake should be rich, chocolatey & with a serious layer of filling. Unfortunately, the filling here was no more then a thin smear! The fruit scone was just as dry with a slight hint of "burnt" & served with a wrapped pat of butter and fairly cheap jam. For the prices charged, I would expect much more! The cafe itself was fairly modern & airy. I did have to ask a member of staff to wipe the table before we sat down but that in itself is a fairly common problem. It's nice architecturally too - blending contemporary with the classic building it's a part of.We only had coffees/hot chocolate. Catering seemed absolutely fine - as you'd expect from a chain running a concession. However, the cleanliness let it down a bit. The museum itself is so meticulously kept, but the floor of the cafe needed a good vacuum and a mop, and it was only 11am in the morning on a quiet weekday. No good for children! We live nearby but first time we'd visited. We ordered two adult lunches and a children's box to share between my 16 month old and his brother. First childs ham sandwich that arrived was on sour dough (too tough and dry for small mouths and new teeth anyway) BUT the bread was also stale so we sent it back. We were finishing lunch when the ham returned in a hard baguette (definitely not suitable for either child). So it went back again and finally returned in a soft bun. In meantime we had already fed both children from our own lunches and with other snacks we had with us. Was expecting to be offered some kind of refund or even a proper apology but nothing! This is not a cafe for children and Holburne café shouldn't offer a child specific option if they really don't know how to cater for them. Won't go back.

The menu we were offered for lunch was not the one on the website: choices were much more limited and less interesting. We chose the burger and wished we hadn't as it was very hard and not at all succulent as we expected. It was served in cardboard. We asked for plates and, after some delay, we were provided with plates which were too small. (Other dishes were served on plates of the appropriate size.) The service was brusque. And the ambience was quite appalling. We were inside and on the same side as the area where the food was prepared. The noise levels prevented conversation at normal levels - much banging of plates as well as the noisy coffee machine. We moved outside for coffee - quieter but the service remained brusque. The firm responsible, Benugo, provides similar services in many London Museums and we know they can do much better. Not recommended.

Until recently I have enjoyed popping into the Holburne Museum's Garden Cafe for light refreshments (I live round the corner) - coffee, tea, croissants, etc. On my last visit I ordered a cream tea that consisted of a pot of tea and a scone with clotted cream and strawberry jam. From here things did not go well - the waiter's understanding of English, though adequate, wasn't very fluent. I asked for a pot of tea with hot water and no milk. I was served a pot of tea with milk, no hot water, and if the tea was made with boiling water I'm a Dutchman! The scone duly arrived with the jam and cream presented together in a widgy dish. Upon my first bite I knew that what I had been served was not clotted cream. It tasted more like the American faux cream, Miracle Whip. I tried to be discreet speaking to one of the more fluent English-speaking waitresses, but was made to feel that I absolutely did not know what I was talking about. A fresh spoonful of clotted cream (very different from the first) was served. As to the jam, I had to scrape off and separate the remaining jam from the "offending" faux cream. This sounds very picky and petty, but restaurateurs need to be less accusatory of their patrons. The Garden Cafe occupies very nice space overlooking the Holburne's green space. The Holburne Museum is definitely a must for residents and visitors alike. And, of course, I'll go back.

I didn't have a lot of time in Bath, so I had not looked for a particular place to eat lunch. Having been to a few places in the morning, I continued to The Holbourne and decided to have lunch there. I had an idea of what to expect, based on Museums in LondonI decided to try the cannelloni (pasta is a frequent choice for a non-meat dish), I expected the usual soggy pasta covered in sauce. However, what I got, was clearly freshly made: firm pasta, not too much sauce or tomato, a lovely balance of ingredients. It's table service, rather than a canteen type queue, and service attentive, no semaphore needed, as in so many places. Assuming it was the usual fare, I thought £9 a little dear, but it was very good value for what I got. My glass of white wine was well chilled and also reasonably priced. The restaurant is at the back with large windows overlooked the garden, just a grassed area, but there are tables outside for when the weather is good enough. There are standard chairs and comfortable sofas, relaxed atmosphere. If I were local I'd eat there often.

First rate teas and coffees and delicious cakes served in a lovely setting. This is in the modern wing of the lovely former hotel which is now Holburne Museum (free admission) and has lovely views out into Sydney gardens. Well worth a stop after tramping around the museum.

We have had lunch here many times so hears the review. The wine quality is always very good, today we chose fish cakes and salad and beef ciabatta and salad both were around £10 the wine approx 4.50 a glass. The food was tasty with well balanced filling in the ciabatta, and the mixed salad was fresh with quality dressing.Fish cakes were good quality and good size for lunch. The bill came to approx £28 .service today was a little slow but this is unusual, and have had friendly efficient service in the past. Thanks again Holburne for fab lunch.

As a museum eatery, this was sufficiently adequate that I most certainly would Not Dis-recommend it. There is an area for al fresco too; and afterwards I was left feeling 'sustenance-d' so that I could return to more museum viewing, hence eating here was a certain tick of 'job done'. I personally would have eaten here in any case, because all funds help to subsidize the museum's finances.

Stunning building and contents, can't believe it's free. Take the family and enjoy this amazing collection. I did think the cafe was over priced hence stuck to coffee only, shame no need for top end prices in a museum cafe, take a look at the Tate Gallery cafe in London fraction of the price of yours!

Went there with two young children. The entire Outdoor area is North facing so on a sunny day we were in shade and chilly, staff refused to serve us when we moved chairs into a sunny patch adjacent to their seating area though there was no signage indicating otherwise. Outdoor area useless as its in constant shade. On top of this the food was overpriced (the beef ciabatta was swimming in horseradish) and the children's menu was just an afterthought, with salty crisps and a nutty flapjack served, my kids aren't allergic but seems stupid to serve a nutty chocolate slice in a child's meal without advertising so.But still the dismissive attitude of the staff, and it wasn't just one of them ruined what should of been a nice summer lunch.Won't be returning.

Eat inside or out in this light cafe with tasty food and friendly staff. The menu is simple but the food we had was great, and served quickly.Give it a try, there is also an art museum to explore - cross the Pultney bridge and keep going, it is at the top of the road.

This museum is a great place to visit. The old building has been extended with a lot of thought where a lot of the character still exists and some of the outer structure has very cleverly been brought into the inside. The gallery is very well laid out. I took my grandchildren and there was lots for them to do.Also we were very lucky as there was a fantastic Camera Obscura on display in the grounds outside.

This a terrific place to visit, as you walk through the old building at the front you reach a superb modern extension to the rear which was very well executed. The gallery has some very well thought out displays and the presentation is excellent. There were some very helpful and very knowledgeable volunteer guides at hand, Brilliant!

This museum is very accessible and the objects and paintings attractively displayed. Sir William Holburne was the younger son who unexpectedly inherited upon the death of his older brother. He embarked on the world tour and bought works of art. There are many paintings by Gainsborough, Zoffany and Raeburn. They are even hung on the walls going up the stairs. The portraits really give a snapshot of who the important people of the day were and what life was like. There are bronze sculptures, porcelain and silver on display. Of particular interest were Sir William's passport and the letter containing the sad news of his older brother'sdeath and a beadwork basket from the 17th century. The docents in each room are very approachable and knowledgeable.

This is more than a cafe or coffee shop, it has a very good atmosphere and the food is fresh and appetising. You look out onto the Holburne garden, it's a welcoming and calm oasis in a lovely setting. Service is friendly and efficient. Prices are reasonable. Licensed, too, if you want something stronger.

Beautiful presentation of a collection. We loved both the building and its contents. The collection is really taken as the beating heart of the institute. The building and interpretation surrounding it, celebrate the objects on display.

I can't fault this establishment. The maitresse d' runs a very tight ship.Lunches are light and rather continental (wot, no spuds?). The pasta primavera, chicken paillard and baked aubergine were (as the title suggests) delightful as were the puddings. The loose-leaf elderflower and lemon 'tea' (and I presume perhaps all the teas) are 'bagged' (see pic) on the premises. This was a first, and very pleasant, experience of this infusion. The garden setting (glass on three sides) is glorious with Sydney Gardens beyond. The restaurant is wheelchair-friendly; we had no problem in navigating to a suitable table (of which there were many).

The staff pushed passed us as if we were cattle waiting to be fed. There was no "hello, how are you" but just "what do you want". It was such a shame as this is the second time I've tried this place and both times it has been awful. The decor is brilliantly executed but the staff just don't complement it as they wait around doing nothing while the majority of tables are full of old cups and are dirty. I guess the only upside is that the food looks quite fresh and well prepared but unfortunately I was told I was two minutes too late for food. That probably means they can't be bothered to put it on a plate and would much rather put it all in the bin at the end of the day. This restaurant had just had a big feature in the Bath Life so I thought it may have improved but I was obviously wrong. However don't let this put you off the museum as it is great with a brilliant cutting edge design extension. The ironic thing is that the volunteers in the museum are more helpful than the staff who are being payed in the cafe!

Best Place of For Wide-Range Food, Service, Atmosphere in Bath & The Staff Are Brilliant: Great Product & Great Value For Money (27/02/2025): I went into the The King Wessex [Weatherspoon's] , Bath on Thursday 27 March, 2025 & I had one of the best customer experiences in recent years. Elementally, I write to express my sincere heartfelt appreciation & gratitude for Meg [Floor Associate]. She delivered a highly professional & competent customer service, which she provided in both a friendly and accessible manner. Meg [Floor Associate], is incredibly "attentive" every time I come to eat at The King of Wessex [J D Weatherspoon], Bath & goes to great lengths to check on how my day had gone, which is what makes a "curated" high quality pub experience in my view. She produced a extremely satisfying customer experience from start to finish, for which I will always be grateful for. Furthermore, I would absolutely recommend, Meg [Floor Associate], as she was incredibly curating, extremely knowledgeable about the Weatherspoon's Menu & punctilious throughout my "lovely customer experience". I would strongly recommend "The King Wessex Bath" duo, to their eclectic distinguished atmosphere, great range in food options & unbeatable collection of beverages. Meg [Floor Associate], is the Embodiment of " Weatherspoons Pub Excellence"

Desafortunadamente, han convertido lo que solía ser un espacio encantador en algo realmente hortera e insípido con manteles de plástico y una decoración en general realmente horrible. ¡También estaba CONGELANDO! De ninguna manera podrías sentarte sin un abrigo.

Me and my partner had a 3 course meal here for our anniversary. The staff were lovely and friendly, although at times we felt forgotten about and the service was slow. This is especially poor considering there were no more than 3 or 4 tables full, so it was hardly busy. The price of the food and quality of the food do not match up at all. £200 for a 3 course meal and a couple of drinks each. You don't mind paying a premium if it means quality but we've had better food in budget hotels/restaurants for a third of the price. Your local takeaway provides better food than this place does, which is a huge disappointment when you pay so much for so little. The location and room itself are both absolutely stunning, but you go to a restaurant to eat good food, not for overpriced tat that you can make better yourself. I would not go back to eat at this restaurant, avoid at all costs. The hotel is gorgeous though, well worth staying, but eat elsewhere!
