GAIL's Bakery Godalming in Waverley

This coffee shop is the worst of all Gail’s I have been to. Firstly I have to say the staff are very friendly but unfortunately that’s the only positive thing I can say. This was not my first visit but it seems every experience has been the same. If you come at lunch time there is never enough available food and simply sold out before 11:30am, the counter empty with limited options. Smoked salmon bagel, chicken burger, quiches and the list goes on…! On the last visit staff advised that certain foods are being made at certain times, so I did follow their advice and arrived next day just to be told that food I wanted has already sold out again and I should call ahead first! Seriously what kind of coffee shop is this! For the time being I would advised to stay away and don’t waste your time to avoid disappointment. There is so many other places in Godalming who care for ther customers and I’ll be going to these from now on.

Really disappointed with our visit to Gail’s today. Very weak coffee - in fact it was hard to taste it at all. Lots of uncleared dirty tables even though it wasn’t busy. Extremely overpriced cakes. Won’t be coming back I’m afraid 😬

But this seemed too much to ask despite it being really quiet. Girls only interested in talking to each other and they’ve all got that slightly nasty public school demeanor. Felt really patronized by one of them when I asked where my tea was. Apparently it wasn’t her fault. Avoid.

I don't write many reviews but feel the need if really poor or really great experience. Often go to Farnham or Clapham Gail's so tried Godalming. Wish I hadn't - over cooked almond croissant and weak, watery latte coffee. I love my coffee but had to leave this one as it was so awful. And at £8 for the two items you'd expect so much better. Such a shame.

The last three visits to this branch have been hideous for a number of reasons. For some reason they have increased the volume of background music and to the extent whereby you need to raise your voice to be heard or, as some customers were doing today, literally shout. It took me several attempts to ask the staff member at the till to turn it down, she was also busy dancing!. Surfaces and crockery is often filthy, with tables left uncleared and badly stained with food, especially the surface near the window. There appears to be no system in place for service and even when there are several staff working the wait can be considerable. Many of the staff are busy talking with each other. On every occasions recently I've needed to ask for cutlery , even when I made it clear I was eating in. On one busy lunch time there were dogs being allowed to access the seating area. Management need to take a close look. The whole place has deteriorated into a mess, which is such a shame as it sharted out well. I for one won't be returning.

Been to many Gail's and always go to one if in the town I'm visiting. First time I feel a bit cheated. Love cinnamon buns, but smallest ever here. All the same size on display so I wasn't unlucky. All about half size of what we normally get. And I ordered a regular hot chocolate which wasn't much bigger than an egg cup?? Unusual. Unlike me or something happening here I should know about? Shame

Stumbled across this really cool cafe this afternoon & some lunch, Cauliflower & Aubergine sesame seed Sourdough roll, absolutely delicious, highly recommend. Will be coming back with my husband.

Since the branch opened on Godalming high street, I have frequented the store a number of times. Sadly, the store is more times than not, not being cleaned up. Tables full of crumbs, crockery not being cleared away. For the prices Gail’s charges, they need to keep on top of the cleanliness of this store. However, the flat whites are excellent

Sit in the window of this rather minimalist bakery/coffee shop and watch the world go by. The coffees are good, the croissants are excellent and there is a great choice of savoury bakes and cakes to choose from. The little honey cakes are a delightful treat.

Visited Gail's Bakery this morning for a coffee, as I was shopping in Godalming with my husband. I was expecting good things as my friend raves about the Gail's near her. It was such a disappointment. I had an americano and my husband a cappuccino. Not having been before I ordered the smaller size. My husband's coffee came in a small mug with no handle. I mean what idiot thinks it's a good idea to serve a hot drink in a cup with no handle? Mine came in a bigger mug, with handle but only because there were no small pots left. However I can only assume they used a small amount of coffee as it was weak as dishwater. My husband also had a ham and cheese croissant costing £4.80 which he said was nice but certainly not worth the money. We had been planning to go to Costa and only went to Gail's as we wanted to try it. We won't bother again. Also, it's not a good idea to look around too closely as the place is a bit grubby. Still even though it was expensive we learnt the lesson not to go there again!

I visit Gails very regularly and am always pleasantly greeted by the staff, Grace especially who provides excellent customer service and always has a smile on her face! Great food and drinks, Gail’s Godalming is an excellent place to visit

Dog bowl outside, dogs allowed at the food counter but apparently it’s unhygienic to have them near the tables. We like Gail’s on the whole but if you don’t welcome my dog then I’ll take my business to the other cafes, restaurants and bars in Godalming that do.

Walking past this shop quite often I am always attracted by the big windows, tempting food displays and the sound as well as look of lots of customers of all ages and backgrounds having a good time. It reminded me of some similar cafes in Spain! Now I have become a regular purchaser of their bread and although I haven't yet gone in for a coffee I'm impressed by the quality of the food (not cheap, but good value), the very adequate number of servers, the cleanliness and efficiency and above all the lively, welcoming atmosphere. I could hardly believe I was in sedate Surrey!

Went for baked eggs and toast. Eggs were cooked too much, toast wasn’t buttered properly. Took ages to get and paid over £10 for it all. Pastries are nice but that’s it.

Expensive. £17 for one tiny hot chocolate and a pot of tea and 2 smallish cheese and ham quiches with no side salad. The hot chocolate nearly burnt my husbands hands as it was served in a cup with no handle! The teapot was chipped in two places. I would say these are Health and Safety issues. One being Burning and secondly germs harboured in chipped crockery. There are no soft furnishings so it’s quite noisy as sound echos around. An uncomfortable long wooden bench and hard chairs. Avoid as there are a lot better places to go.

Went to Gails full of anticipation- it was busy on Friday mid morning. A good sign. Went for the SOFT baked eggs, sour dough toasted dipping soldiers, DRY cappuccinos (double espresso with milky bubbles sitting on top) and a side of guacamole verde. After a very long wait the eggs arrived so hot I was warned not to touch the plate. They were rock hard. I would assume if you call them soft and serve with soldiers there should be bit of yolk!! The coffee was super milky - yuck! I saw the barista make it and double checked it was a dry cappuccino , which she confirmed. She doesn’t know what she’s doing - I should part milky bubbles and see black coffee underneath - I saw milky milk! The tablespoon of guacamole was delish - but such a tiny portion. So what does this prove - Gails is all show and no substance! I will avoid in future as there are some lovely independent cafes in Godalming that will go under without our support- including the community cafe opposite Waitrose - good value and you’re supporting the community at the same time!

Had to eat here as left our venue up the road due to poor service and food. It was lovely and felt everything was freshly made and baked on the premises.

This place gets almost everything wrong. Over-priced, unfriendly and slow staff, average food, don’t take cash and ugly decor. The coffee is nice but again, costs too much. A real disappointment.

Got a take away coffee, the cup was way to hot to hold, and there was nothing to protect my hand from the heat. Had to use a napkin. Disappointed considering how much it cost. Also was only average taste as well.

Only soda bread and everything is SO expensive £4 for a small cake !!!!!! Won’t be going again , trendy place but obviously that’s what we are paying for
