Complete rip tiny portions heavy batter and totally miserable owner - felt sorry for the young lad serving avoid like the plague

Very small portions and overpriced for what you get. Chips don’t taste the best. Would recommend going Parkys down the street, slightly more expensive but portion size brilliant.

Visited this weekend very disappointed with the amount of chips and understand why they are only open 2 days a week .chips are not even good and it’s way to expensive!

Ordered online for collection at 5pm, shop shut up no one around should have opened at 4:30, haven’t got my order, menu lights on but shop locked up, no notice of any issues

Got food from here earlier, half the order was missing, was cold and not nice! This place has an already terrible reputation and I can completely see why. Tried calling them 28 times for over an hour and no one answered so frustrating! Went into the shop to complain and the manager could not care less her attitude stinks!! Will never ever go here again. Avoid this place unless you want to be disappointed

Called before going down about glutton free and told OK glutten free till 8pm like on website and got to shop 1901 and told no we stop glutten free and 1900 , customer service a joke really don't care , best avoid and go elsewhere

Fantastic chippy. We order online and it is so quick and easy. Discount that is offered for online orders is brilliant and a great incentive - please keep this! Delivery always arrives quickly. Fish and chips always piping hot and fresh. Staff are friendly. Highly recommend!

Lovely fish and chips, burgers and proper Battered onion rings. Delivery man delivered promptly and was really friendly . Staff inside the shop are professional and polite. Would highly recommend

Absolutely shocking service. We ordered something simple (or so we thought). 2 x fish and chips (sharing chips) and 1 kids meal of nuggets and chips. Well, the delivery was around 30-40 minutes. It arrived. Nuggets and chips wrapped up, and 2 pieces of fish. No other chips. We rang, and the girl on the phone firstly didn't believe us. "You'll have to prove there were no chips." How? How do we PROVE this? We have no chips. So we asked for a replacement. The manager at the other end could be heard really slating me on the phone. They said they'd send more chips but it would be 45 minutes. So we asked for replacement fish. We were then told, and brace yourself, "you must return the other fish then". Firstly, sure, crack on. Secondly, why? What are you going to do with the fish? Never ever ordering from them again, or using them. I'm a bit late in my review as I've posted this in FB instead. Note to others - use Parkys.

What can I say? Try this place yourself before taking any notice of previous reviews - ( I visited twice in 2 consecutive days - 2nd time travelling from the centre of Bristol - after raving about the delicious chips I'd had the day before - to prove the existence of the perfect chip)!! Spotlessly clean, Friendly Staff - I experienced the delights of a 'Frickle' (a Gherkin cut into several pieces, battered & deep fried - please do not 'knock it' until you've tried it - an absolute delight)!! I'm what could be described as a 'Chip-A-Holic' & Deep Blue obviously invest in top quality potatoes that Chip to perfection - Fish, Fish Bites were superb. TBH my order was a little 'mixed up' but it was a genuine mistake - busy shop & lack of staff - but the issue was rectified immediately (& certainly not worth any sort of negative review) - If I had an Award this Eatery would win it hands down...🏆🎖

Tonight I ordered 2 fish cakes, 1 battered sausage, 3 portions of curry sauce and 2 portions of chips for three people. One portion of chips was missed meaning the 3 of us had to share one small portion of chips. The curry sauce had leaked everywhere by the time I got home as the pots weren’t secure so we lost some of that as well. It was Sunday night and it was really quiet so no excuses really.

Haven’t visited this one yet so thought I’d give it a try as parkys had to close. If I had to rate zero stars I would have done as 1 star is too much. Tiny portions for the money we paid, will never go back to this one even if it was the last one on earth!!!

First time visit as the other high street chip shop was closed. I have never been so insulted. The chip butty was £2.89 and is worth no more than 50p in terms of the portion size, one decent bap and ‘barely’ a handful of chips . I have never been so ripped off . Parkys chippy on the high on the other hand is superb value and their chip butty is £2 and you literally get a small bag of chips with the bap, I was so angry when I got home and saw the pathetic amount I got , total contempt for their customers. I’m future I’ll go without if the other chip shop is closer and would never give this shop a penny of my money in the future. They should be absolutely ashamed.

what can i say, 2x large cod and one single portion of chips = £25 plus delivery, fish had more batter than than fish - not worth £25 from a long way off, never gain shall i buy from here

Have been a few times and the portion sizes have always been awful - the only reason we went back is because the other one on the high street was closed. The last order we had though, we couldn’t eat. The chips were hard and some of them smelt like they had gone off and had then been chucked in the frier. Would not good back here. Such a perfect location for them, I’m surprised they don’t make more effort.

We ordered on the website to collect. The order was accurate, and portion sizes were huge!! It’s such good value for money for the portion sizes that you receive - even the children’s meals! Everything was very tasty and collection was quick and easy. I can not understand the negative reviews on here as we have never had a bad experience with Deep Blue, they are fantastic. Thank you Deep Blue for brightening a dark Saturday evening with tasty food and great service!

Having previously tried Deep Blue once before and being disappointed with the poor quality, I decided to give them a second chance.......big mistake. I waited over an hour and a half for a delivery, only to be told my order was 5 minutes away when I chased. 20 minutes later my order was cancelled as the store was "too busy to make my order." I contacted Deep Blue head office (yes unbelievably for a store with such terrible service and organisation, it is part of a chain) and after waiting over a week and chasing them (anyone see a pattern emerging here) for a response I get told that it was Just Eat's fault. When things go wrong at least take responsibility and attempt to put things right - don't fob off your customers. Judging by the recent reviews on here it looks like a pattern of incompetency. I should have gone to Parky's - much better product, at a better price and always with great service. I won't make the Deep Blue mistake again!

Bought 4 meals which were overpriced and did not give value for money. Burgers should have had salad, just lettuce in them, no tomato or cucumber. The fish looked grey and the chips for all the meals were horrible. The staff were very disrespectful and did not seem to cope very well. They could be heard swearing in front of customers. Would rather go hungry than go there again.

Visited recently and extremely disgusted that the young woman behind the counter did not follow Covid precautions as stated on the notice. I watched her take cash from more than one customer then continue to pick up the phone, package the food and then start to play around with her mobile. Poor service, overpriced for what you get and not the best takeaway in town. Will not return due to hygiene concerns.

I ordered a delivery of fish and chips a few days ago.The chips had fallen out of the paper bag and were swilling around in the bottom of the delivery bag. They were rock hard, barely warm and looked as if they had been cooked for hours and left lying around. They were disgusting and inedible.\I have emailed Deep Blue about my complaint before "going public" but no-one has bothered to get back to me.

We ordered via the website which was straight forward and easy but the food itself was disappointing. We ordered 2 sausages, but only got one, which was definitely not a ‘jumbo’. The ‘large’ cod was absolutely tiny, mainly batter, hardly any fish, and smaller than the small fish I occasionally order from another chippy! The chips were good but again a very small portion. Very poor value for money. This was our first experience, we will not be using them again. I also think charging a 50p processing fee is very cheeky, I would happily order over the phone if they picked up!

Stopped for quick lunch . Ordered standard fish and chips and a curry sauce . At nearly £10 , was well overpriced and not big at all . The fish was ok the chips ok , but felt it was not worthy of £10 for a quick monday lunch stop ... the chip shop down the rd is much nicer and cheaper

The food from Deep Blue is really tasty, we ordered a standard Cod, fish cake and battered jumbo sausage and all were excellent. The large chips is a perfect size for 3 people! The mushy peas are tasty too. Overall food was yummy, service was quick and the price was really reasonable. Great that they are open on a Sunday too. Highly recommend.

Updated review from my last one below. Ordered GF fish and chips and battered sausage and was disappointed. The Fish was chewy, the sausage half battered and the chips not that tasty. Might not be going back here for a while.Popped in on the way home from the sea side as couldn't get gluten free there. Being bank holiday was so surprised to find they still did gf on the Monday. Took home to Gloucester to warm up and they were lovely. Cooked from fresh and great size portions. Love treating my family from Oxford to great gf fish and chips. Shame there aren't more places

This was once an independent chippy with quite a good reputation. Now been bought by the Deep Blue chain, and the standard has dropped, while prices have gone up. (A similar thing happened in Godalming) Perfectly acceptable fish and chips but not worth a special journey. Chip quality is a bit variable.

looking for a quick meal we returned to Deep Blue after several years away and were sadly disappointed. Limp chips and soggy batter was just not up to the mark - never again!

As a gluten free eater I am always excited for Sunday’s and Monday’s as these are apparently their gluten free nights, but wait...twice in the past month they have had signage up saying they can’t do gluten free - why are you advertising it if you can’t do it? A waste of journey and a waste of time.

Everything was spot on! The chips the gravy and the savaloy. Good value for money is well. Will definitely return.

We live about 1 mile away from here, but on a Friday night, after a week at work, a beer or two is called for. So we get it delivered (lazy, I know). The food is always spot on, hot and tasty and the delivery people are always polite. We had an issue once, when the delivery was late, but we were called by the shop to explain the circumstances.

The food here is always good value. I have never been disappointed. It's great to sit outside too when the weather is fine.

My wife and I have used this takeaway for several years. Unfortunately their standards seem to be dropping fast. Over cooked fish, pies so dry you could knock a hole in the wall with them and everything luke warm at best.

I regularly buy my fish and chips here as they have pensioner's specials. The staff are very friendly.

We have been using this particular chip shop regularly for around six weeks and each week it has dramatically dropped standards after tonight's experience and reading other reviews we will try the other chip shop by Dominoes

The plaice piece of fish was awful. It was far too overcooked, I thought possibly cooked a 2nd time, so thought I'd remove the batter, although then realised that the fish itself wasn't smelling right... Husband offered to drive back to Thornbury with it, but decided that I'd now been put off eating anything at all. Sorry, but after this experience, have decided to not be buying from here again

The fish is sizeable but considering I was paying the best part of £10 for a large cod and chips I would expect there to be more chips. I'm surprised this is allowed to go on as the local competitor down the road serves bigger portions for less of the price. Unless there's a potato famine in Thornbury I don't know about, can I have some more chips, please?!

Came here for the first time in a very long while and will not buy from here again.

Went in for chicken and chips, when we got it home had to return with the chicken as it was so over done it was unediable. Told the girl serving that id like to swap it for a sausage and she basically threw my change at me and no apology made. The chips tasted like they be been warmed up and considering they dont open sunday lunch time they must of been yesterdays. Really dissapointed and definetly wont be wasting my money there again.

Though they do gluten free, good luck getting it. Was buzzing to have a gluten free dinner so ordered it , after waiting 50 minutes for it to be delivered they then rang up to say that they now had ran out of gluten free and had to cancel the order. Pretty naff service and organisation in my opinion

Located in Thornbury High St., so may have to park a little way off, but worth the walk. No seating, takeaway only. Very good fish, always cooked nicely. If you order a large and they dont have one, they will often give you two smaller which add up to quite a lot of fish. Chips nicely done and plenty of them. Served in eco-friendly card box and paper bag.

Nice to be able to have an old favourite once in a while so on finding out that Deep Blue have gluten free fish 'n' chip sessions on Sunday 5pm-8pm & Monday 11.30am - 1:30pm & 5pm - 8pm it was a nice surprise.

After a long day at work we always look forward to our supper of fish & chips from Deep Blue. You can always guarantee a tasty meal . Fish and chips cooked fresh never disappoints and this is why we go to Deep Blue. We would highly all the food here.

I placed my order for a single fish and chips at 17.05 on a Wednesday. It was delivered at 18.38!!!!

Have visited a few times and staff are very friendly and extremely helpful. Food was still hot when I got home and was delicious as usual. Would highly recommend that you try the cod and chips

At first it was very good but for the last 3visits there always seems to be a shortage of various sizes of fish and the service is.nt the same !so we go to the other chip shop down the road and it,s a lot better and the portions are slightly more generous......

Had a delivery just gone 5pm tonight of Fish and chips, It arrived 10 minutes after i placed my order even tough i was told could be up to 30 minutes. It was pipping hot and perfect! Driver was polite as well as the lady I gave my order to on the phone.

The staff are friendly, and work as fast as they can. I had fish and chips tonight and all 3 members of staff was running back and forth trying to serve the queue of us out the door as fast as they could. My food was hot and fresh, it was going out as fast as the person behind the fryer could cook it.

Paid a visit here last week and asked for 1 large chips and 1 small chips . The portion sizes were absolutely horrendous . Got home and it was as if they had given me a happy meal . Have eaten other things off there menu too which I’d say weren’t exactly very nice . Bit overpriced too if you ask me . Shall definitely mention something when I visit again .

Have ordered a takeaway a few times and been fine but never on a Sunday night, ordered a cheese burger with salad and sauce, burger had been cooked and left heating as it was really chewy, no salad and felt like a left over weekend food and using up leftovers

The fish - cod was great and very fresh but I have no idea what kind of oil the chips were cooked in they were soggy and tasted of oil !!Very expensive for what it is for the same price we could have had lunch in the pub instead of a takeaway that we ate sitting outside in the streetNever again!!

This is what, in my opinion, was always the best fish and chip shop in the area, particularly with the quality of food. Being so good, we (used to) go every week and make an order for the family.However our most recent experience has made me never want to return to this establishment again. We have ordered from here through just eat a couple of times and have never had an issue, on this occasion the food was of a good temperature and appeared to be of good quality. We made some requests due to allergies not to only have lettuce on the burgers, in the manor we always did.When the food arrived it was apparent this request was ignored and they had been loaded up with relish. It took 40 minutes to get hold of the takeaway when we were advised they were to busy to deal with it and it was the delivery drivers fault for delivering the wrong meal. I explained that everything else was right and requested a refund, explaining we could not eat the food and as it had taken so long to contact them there was no point having anymore sent.We were apologised to and then we were told, again, they were busy and couldn't keep track of what was going on, and the it was the drivers fault, apparently the driver gets blamed for everything. We were told they couldn't get the money too us that evening so it was arranged to collect the refund the next day from the branch itself.When attending the branch and speaking to the same person as on the phone, who claimed to be the supervisor, we were told with a horrible attitude, by them that they would not issue a refund and they never promised a refund and they could not do it without the food.

never normally give negative reviews, but i feel compelled to on this occasion. New to the area, so we thought we'd try Deep Blue after a hectic day. I was at first a little amazed at the cost, but I thought Ok, perhaps they were generous portions. Oh how I was wrong! The lad serving took a while to carefully ensure I was served a maximum of 12 chips on the tray along with two sausages that had more rusk/grissle in than meat, and more packaging provided than the meal I was buying! What ever happened deep blue to good ol' paper rather than a box for everything just to get the name out and food that was almost non existent yet extortionate in price!! Quite simple, why not concentrate on the customer experience rather than marketing the food that the customer has not received for the value you are charging! Clean and presentable from the front but when two long dark hairs were resting on the sausage the bin took the packaging and the food!First impressions very poor, off to other chippy down the road.

Worse experience of a fish and chip shop, staff uninterested, quality bad and if they think 15 reheated chips equates to a large portion is value they need a word with themselves. I strongly advise they carry out a bench marking excercise in the immediate local area.

Can't fault the food at all. Wasn't greasy and over fried. Had the home made fish cake and it tasted oven baked even though they're fried. You get a good portion of chips but not a ridiculous amount that you waste some. The building is unique - certainly looks too posh to be a chippy. The staff were polite and we didn't have to wait too long. The food came in boxes instead of the paper which I was think is nicer. It was cheaper than other chip shops I've been too as well.

Don't ever order online as I did last night night and then had an email to say it was declined because they could not deliver but still took my money not happy at all been ringing this evening and they have been blanking my calls what a bad service from a great place will never be going back

Dropped in here on a Sunday night for a simple order and found myself waiting with many others over 30 minutes for our food. The friendly young girl working on her own at the counter and was doing her best but couldn't keep up and wasn't helped by the other staff member doing the cooking complaining about how busy they were. The food was great and nearly worth the wait but will try the other chippy in the high street next time.

Paid £1 for home delivery on a rainy evening, 10 minutes after ordering our food arrives, piping hot with the crispiest batter. All the staff are polite and the food selection is great and reasonably priced.

We used the new delivery service for a family get together where no one had to cook or wash up!Six of us had various haddock, cod, battered sausage, mushy peas and chips for £40.The food was lovely and delivered hot, couldn't fault it!

Friday evening treat after moving house. Teatime but surprisingly short queue. Friendly efficient staff took our order and the food was freshly cooked for us.

The lady serving was very polite & offered to cook fresh fish for me stating the wait was going to be approx. 10 minutes.10 minutes later I walked out with a large portion of freshly cooked Fish and Chips.Good service, good quality food, well worth a visit.

Tried here for the first time since it changed hands - was impressed! Chips were very good however portion of the southern fried chicken goujons were too small. Overall the portion sizes are very small against Parkys fish and chip shop.

Called in at around 13.35 to pick up some fish and chips. Very disappointed. Not much on offer and no offer to cook any fish from fresh. My cod was as tough as old boots and the chips were mainly small bits and bobs. Batter on the fish was not that light and held a lot of grease. Not impressed at all.

I have used this chip shop for a number of years and think the portion size and quality are good. A useful tip is for NHS and military personnel get a 10% discount.

Chips are horrible, can't explain how gross they are but not like chip shop chips at all, type of chips you could make at home. Stick to parkys or Hing tai!

Took the kids for a quick bite to eat and they allowed me to sit inside which was great as it was raining. Food was amazing and freshly cooked. I can honestly say this was the best fish and chips I have had in years. Well done guys!!!See you again soon.

The one thing I liked was the senior citizens meal deal. They don't overload you with chips and the price is reasonable.

Went after seeing them on just eat, was a little worried as i've always been told the sign of a good chippy was people inside, when we visited there was no-one in unlike one further up the street. But WOW the best Fish and Chips i've ever had light but crispy batter and lovely chips which wern't soggy like some places i've been. Had salt and vinegar added as well and again just the right amount (again unlike some places which leave your food swimming in vinegar)

Popped in on the at home from Devon and had gluten free fish and chips. Was a lovely batter and very tasty fish. All cooked separately. Was told I could call in advance too so I don't have to wait. Waiting wasn't long mind. Will be going back again next week for sure

Visited here after a meeting in a nearby business. Slightly slow on receiving order, but they had to batter the sausage so can't really place a fault on the staff there.Worth the wait though - fresh chips, freshly battered sausage and a reasonable price too. Will visit again if I'm to work/visit thornbury again.

We had takeaway from here on two weekday evenings. Plain fish and chips. It was served in a box, with the fish at the bottom and the salted chips on top. Often I find that the chips are under salted, but this was perfect. The fish was still hot when my husband returned to the hotel with the takeaway, and it was tasty, and not particularly greasy. My stomach usually berates me for eating such greasy food the next day, but this didn't happen this time, so the food was clearly very good. I'd definitely return!

We used this chip shop for the first time yesterday, and won't be returning. Whilst the quality of the food was acceptable, the portion sizes were pathetic and we felt ripped off. On the rare occasion that we have fish and chips (as it is so expensive these days it is often as much as eating out!), we find elsewhere that you get a decent sized bag of chips with each meal, often more than you can eat. Not so at the Frying Machine, Thornbury. They use boxes, place the selected item (fish, pie etc) within the box and then cover the remaining base of the box with chips. Consequently, you get significantly less than half the quantity of chips that you get in most other chip shops. I noticed that very few chips were going in each box and, when I commented on this, was told that they put two scoops in each box (oh, that's alright then)! That would be fine if they were decent size scoops, but they weren't. The chips had been sitting around for a while and weren't as hot as they should be. Service was surly and very few menu items were available. For the sake of a few pence cost to the retailer, a decent sized portion of chips would make this better value for money and encourage repeat custom. In our case, it represented extremely poor value for money and we will revert to the far superior chip shops in Wotton-under-Edge and Bradley Stoke where portions of chips are 3-4 times larger.

This was a very pleasant change for me fish and chips and these where certainly excellent, batter was crisp but not over done with the fish smooth and full of taste. The chips were also great and the portions where extremely large and not expensive. First class highly recommended.

Got a takeaway from here on our second night staying at Thornbury Castle. Fish was great, chips also great and good portions. Reasonably priced too - highly recommended.
