Free Trade Inn in Newcastle upon Tyne

Very popular and with good reason. We spent a lot of hours here in one day and found the service very good, the facilities inside and outside were great. We’ll definitely be back again during our next Newcastle visit.

We always try & go to the FTI when we are in the Newcastle Normally we are there lunchtime & afternoon & it is a great place to sit & chill with a beer or 3. It is a class boozer with a great view of the Toon from the beer garden. I have not eaten there so I couldn't vouch for the food but I expect it is great.

Hands down the greatest pub in Newcastle. One for all chapters of society. I have been multiple times over the years and seen this place at all times of year, all levels of business, and with different groups of friends, and this place never disappoints. Quite mind-week pint. Great. Evening weekend session. Ideal. Sublime.

Only had some drinks, sunny day in April, bar was rammed inside and out, service was still very fast and friendly, great beer selection. Good to see independent pubs succeeding. Also a great view of Newcastle from beer garden.

Busy pub, staff doing a great job.

The bartenders takes song requests. It adds to the fun, warm and comfortable environment. The staff can give you a short story or facts about your drinks. And the graffiti in the toilets are really funny, it adds character to the Inn. I recommend a sunset over Tyne at Free Trade Inn. It's magical!

Great pub. Epic views up the river from garden. Good beer and a very tasty samosa! The pizzas looked great....maybe next time.

We found this following a review in a newspaper. We heard about excellent fish and chips which is served from an outside trailer only on Friday evening. Friendly pub and fantastic choice of beer.

A few weeks ago I got a message from Mack 4273 suggesting I try this riverside pub, So here I am. Paulicarus spotted a new brewery for me to tick off, Scottish brewery Newbarns from Leith. A 5.2% smokey brown, only a half as too strong for a pre midday drink. 8 real ales on handpump. Followed with a pint of Cullercoats Jack The Devil 4.5% bitter. An L shaped bar with a good size beer garden to the side and a river view terrace to the front. Thankfully the wind off the Tyne is not as arctic today as it was in South Shields yesterday. A CAMRA 2025 Good Beer Guide entry. Also wins awards for the cider. A fridge full of foreign beers as well. Only a 15 minute walk from the Tyne Bridge along the river. Retains the character of a working mans pub. We found it very friendly.

Always wanted to try this place but never got round to it untill today. Very impressed with this pub. Great selection of real ales, craft beers largers and other drinks. Very friendly staff. Great service and nice place with great view along the quayside. Will definitely be going back very soon. Never tried thd food but will next timd I go.

Always a favourite of mine. Brilliant community pub with great views over the Tyne. The selection of hand pulled ales is superb, and they also serve a wide range of real ciders. The atmosphere is excellent, as are the friendly staff. The ales are changed on a regular basis. My favourites recently have been the Loch Lomond and Kernel dry stouts.

Great old boozer style pub. I mean pub, not bar or anything else. This is a place to drink great beers and ciders, chat and look at the best night view in Newcastle!

A proper little independent pub with the best views of the Tyne, the gateshead eye, and a geordie sunset. The staff are knowledgeable about the different beers, stouts, and ciders. The pub itself doesn't provide food but they regularly have food truck nights.

Best location in Newcastle for the views. Real ale pub, so don't expect a pint of well known brands here! An opportunity to try something completely different and you just might like it! No food services used. Old style bar with old fashioned fixtures and fittings, but definitely worth a visit. Dog friendly and small outdoor area with seating.

Can’t really review the food as I didn’t have any but the bar was fully and friendly with a good range of beers.

What can I say that others already haven't! Tremendous pub with a brilliant and well curated selection of cask and kegs. Fridge is well stocked with lots of Belgian goodies. Last but not least, brilliant ambience with some lovely views from the window and outdoor area. Absolute must visit for the beer geek

I’ve been here a few times now and despite the beer menu being a bit intimidating, it’s a great pub. The staff will help you out with drink selections, offer a taste and generally give friendly advice. Worth the lovely walk along the River Tyne from the City centre. Views are great too.

Waited years to visit here and it didn't disappoint. Great range of drinks. I went for the sputnik IPA. Great place with a fantastic view up the river Tyne towards the Toon.

Was in Newcastle for a couple of days with work back in July so wasn't going to miss the opportunity to call past the Free Trade Inn and am pleased to report that it was totally worth the detour with excellent beer, service and views back down (up?) the river. Also, anyone marking down a pub for having to order their own drinks and carry them back to their table shouldn't be allowed to review pubs.

Never mind the amazing view, lovely crew and outstanding selection of beers, one of the best features of the Free Trade is its bar where you can walk up, order a drink, then return carrying your drink to wherever you choose to sit, inside or out. It’s a crazy concept that might just catch on, and you should make sure you visit to try it out for yourself.

One of the best pubs in the Northeast. Fantastic beer and epic views. Proper pub, where you order, and pay, for you beer at the bar. None of this table service and queuing that James is used to. Deary me. 🙄 It’s a Pub, James.

A nice little bar, I scored it down as Customers have to get their own drinks and take them outside to their tables.

Good quality cask beer. The views from the bar looking down the Tyne towards the bridges is fantastic. Dog friendly and log burner in the lower seating area. Also 2 different seating areas outside with that view down the Tyne. Pretty certain that they don't do food so can't rate. Well worth a visit.

In my opinion this pub is in the top 3 pubs in NCL. Beers were class, service was quick and friendly and what a beautiful day to enjoy the view of the Tyne.

This is an excellent place. Huge range of Craft Beer at sensible prices, it's very welcoming and not too bright inside. Fantastic staff and a lovely atmosphere with attractive merch for sale. Visited on a sunny day, so sat in the tiered beer garden which has a fantastic view up the Tyne. Great place, very much worth visiting.

Best views in Newcastle and some of the greatest beer you could wish for. I've always had the best times at the Free Trade and love it unconditionally.

When I visit Newcastle, I always make sure to visit here. Tuesdays you get free food when you spend £7, lots of local beers, live music and a rustic look. Staff are always friendly too. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the town centre, this is the place to go.

Very brief visit after dinner nearby, but the selection of beers were impressive although due to time our stay was short.

Brilliant pub. Always a good selection of beers lagers and ciders plus Belgium beers. Block and Bottle pies and susagr rolls and great samosas. What's not to like! Oh! and view over the tyne and bridges is magnificent as are the sunsets.

Didn't eat. The staff were very obliging. I would recommend this establishment as somewhere to visit whilst around Newcastle. A lively arty place.

It's a bit unfair to this pub that I only tend to go when the sun comes out and we enjoy the beer garden with fantastic views over the River Tyne. It is fantastic outside. They've a beer garden immediately outside the pub, and another more recent outside beer garden across the road, closer to the river. But don't just go here on a sunny day. The bar inside is beautiful too. Old fashioned, friendly and inviting. The beer, cask and keg, and cider selection is as strong here as in the other Ouseburn pubs. If you're looking for a trail of pubs, the Free Trade should be top of your list.

We have seen this pub from a distance for years but have never been. Decent weather allowed us to make the walk and we found a quite brilliant pub. The staff were very friendly, the beer was excellent and well kept. Next time in Newcastle we will return. Highly recommended.

Great and busy bar on the Ouseburn pub trail. Fantastic selection of real ale, friendly helpful staff and a quirky building full of character. Pretty much everything you could want for a drinking establishment really. Another bonus was the amazing view across the time from the small side window we were sitting next to., wonderful panoramic scene *(Shame about the pole though).
