Apart from being extremely expensive, the food was appalling. £16.50 for a battered cod that was absolutely disgusting. Batter over cooked on the outside but not cooked in the middle. The fish appeared to be a mush rather than a fillet. Don’t waste your money

Had a freshly cooked fish and chips tonight and it was pretty good Fish was tasty and cooked well and the batter as thin and crisp as you like. Chap brought food to the table and was helpful and friendly Chips were ok and could have been better but were well cooked and consistent with a bit of crunch. It’s not the cheapest fish and chips but the location must be very expensive and I am sure the huge number of people visiting enable them the charge more. Would revisit and I really don’t see any thing to support some of the poor reviews, could well be the change of name / owners

What a rip off. Nearly £3 for a dried out fish cake and the same for a sausage. These plus a few chips brought the bill to over £10. At least it explains why there was no queue when McD's was heaving.

We had a lateish, and of necessity fast (car park ticket expiring) bite at 1430, so the place was virtually empty, with the fish being cooked to order rather than from the hot plate. Our cod & chips were, unlike some of the recent reviews, of a decent quality, and considering the tourist trap destination, reasonable value. We also had a Pukka Pie - expect no more or less from a re heated pie, but it did the job.The bill, just short of £12.The staff member serving, whilst not being full of bonhomie, was pleasant enough for a fast food outlet.

The guy who served me ( was it Freddy himself?) was smarmy and unfriendly with a begrudging smile as he took my money. The batter on the fish was thick and therefore undercooked inside. Fact that it's pricey here was kinda not a surprize as we are after all in Windsor. But the way how the staff treated us was horrible. Not only they don't care for their customers they made us feel unwelcome. Not to mention that food was not the best. Chips felt more like soaked in oil rather than fried and fish had more coating on than the actual fish itself. As for the tidiness- the place could improve in this area aswel. If you haven't been there- save the trouble for yourself and go somewhere else. Set in a prime location to be a tourist trap with pricing to match. However you do get proper fish and chips which isn't always the case when businesses are catering for the tourist trade. The same costs me almost half the price at my local chippy.

We visited here while spending the day in Windsor. Its right near the Castle so you could take out and sit on the grass and eat it if you wanted. There is breakfast bar style seating with really high chairs (indoors and outside) so not ideal for youngsters as they step off the seat without looking at the drop below. Great for us adults to chill out and watch the world go by. There is also seating upstairs but i didn't go up there so cant comment. I had a regular cod and chips. I was surprised that they cooked the fish fresh which made a massive difference. It tasted great! Its the most expensive fish and chips (£10) i have ever had but as i don't have it very often i treated myself. Staff were polite and they take cards. Prepared fairly quickly aswell. Its also next door to the shortest street in the UK! I would definitely eat there again when i am next in Windsor!!

The regular cod and chips are not to greasy. The cod is cooked to order juicy inch thick flake with a thin crisp batter above average for a chippy. This review is for Freddy's of Windsor Fish & Chips, on High St. next to Windsor Castle. I see this place from my hotel across the street and against my better judgement I thought I'd give it a try. As I soon found out, there's a reason why this place is ALWAYS EMPTY. I was hungry. I go in to order and there are two families ahead of me. There is an older guy and a younger guy preparing the food. I can see that the older guy who was taking orders was busy preparing food for the two families, but not once does he acknowledge my presence. Another customer comes in AFTER me and the (older) server takes his order and gives him his food right away. He doesn't even look at me! I tell the younger server that I am ready to order, he then turns and tells the older guy. The older guy mumbles "I am serving others..." At that point I just walked out. There are better places to eat in Windsor. I should have known better. All this place does is deep fry and microwave everything. You're better off if you avoid this disgusting place!

Standard statement regarding this and all my reviews: I have for some time struggled with the Trip Advisor rating system on the basis that it does not provide a particularly granular method or any useful context for restaurant reviews (for example a 5 star review for a burger joint is very different to a 5 star review for a Michelin Starred establishment). In the context of a fish and chip restaurant in upmarket Windsor my view is as follows:We arrived in Windsor by boat and the whole crew (8 of us) required fuel and the idea of fish and chips was carried. A great place for - scrupulously clean, friendly staff and excellent fish and chips.A few tables on the street (on the High Street), upstairs seating in addition to the option of sitting on a bench outside Windsor Castle (we didn't but there are far worse places to eat Al Fresco).Well worth a visit.

After around 2 hours at Windsor Castle, my dad and I got a wristband to temporarily leave Windsor castle. We went into town at about noon to grab some lunch, with the ideal being fish & chips. Upon setting our eyes on Freddy's "the best fish and chips in Windsor" sign, we were drawn in without hesistation like fish are to bait. Ordering a large cod meal set, which upon calculation gave nothing really different to the alakat dishes, other than a small additional not-complementary-in-taste side (side options being: gravy, red beans or curry- seriously? Curry?). I ordered gravy and it came in a tiny container barely the size of the circle I make when I shape my index finger and thumb into an 'O'.The meals generally came with the standard bottle drinks of little variety (coke, diet coke, sprite etc.) The chips were simply ordinary, fat and undelectible. However, the large cod was tasty and a delight to the pallete. It was a good balance of the fish and the crispy coating of flour outside of it. For the regular female consumer, I think it sufficient to say either a Small Cod set is suitable. The regular sized chips along with the Large Cod was definitely too much for my appetite. Although it was a suitable size for my dad. Overall impression: Ordinary but worth to just get the fish.

We were quite hungry after touring Windsor Castle and walked into this place as we saw there was some seating at the stool bar available. Firstly, we were quite surprised and dismayed to learn that we had to BUY our packets of tartar sauce and ketchup...at a fish and chip place! What made it worse is we saw OTHERS DID NOT HAVE TO PAY for their packets of sauce! After seeing that, we certainly felt there was some discrimination here! We don't know how they decide who has to pay and who doesn't, but it is a completely UNFAIR practice! We wanted to leave but had already paid, so we disgruntledly started into our meal only to find the fish was heavily battered and quite greasy. Compared to other rather wonderful fish and chips meals we've had on this trip, our fish and chip experience here was very disappointing and we left there very unhappy. Unhappy enough to write this review.

We were unfortunate to turn up just after a large group of foreign tourists had ordered a large amount of food. The group were very disorganised and more of their group turned up after we had and decided to push in the queue in front of us. We asked these people to queue behind us as we had already been waiting 15 minutes. (we had accepted the first couple of push-ins from young children. But would not accept a group of adults who has only just walked in). We accept that this is not the establishment's fault. However, it was clear that the staff were frustrated and not in control of the situation. They appeared annoyed at us for intervening and trying to keep our place in the queue and they didn't take the trouble to look after their customers by intervening and serving people in the correct order. There was also another man who spoke up after we did, who said he had been waiting for over 20 minutes too - all he wanted was a small cone of chips. It is therefore, advisable to avoid this place at peak times as the staff are unable to organise big orders or with a big amount of customers. When our order was ready, I was surprised that the small packages contained the whole of our order of large chips, scampi and fish. When I questioned this to check we definately had the full order. They didn't fully answer me and seemed to rush me out the door, chucking forks and napkins at me which dropped to the floor. It is clear that they were not in control of the situation. The food was fine however the "big portion" of chips looked no different to the medium portion and was definitely not a big enough portion for two people to eat. It was expensive for the quantity we got.

The establishment is small with a a few seats outside, and a few upstairs, but they share ownership with the deli next door and you can sit in their sitting area as well. Have been in here a few times and always enjoyed the food. It is more expensive then your usual meal at the chip shop but this is Windsor we are talking about. The food is great as well so can't complain. Guys who work in the store are friendly although they did mess up our order. However, they quickly sorted it out so not a problem really.Lots of meal deals in store as well as a great selection to choose from. There is also seating both downstairs, upstairs and outside although not much of it. It wasn't too busy when we went of a weekday lunchtime but can imagine it gets packed out of evenings and weekends. If I was the Queen and needed something quick and tasty I'd pop in here (not sure if Corgis are welcome though); it's just along from Windsor Castle. If you time it right you may be eating your fish and chips when the Changing of the Guard is marching past. What could be more British than that! After touring the Castle with family we were looking for a bite to eat. To be honest we almost by-passed Freddy's, figured it would be over-priced and not that good. Wrong on both counts. Pleasant counter staff cooked up some very good fish and chips, it came with a portion of mushy peas and a drink. That was the meal deal. Unfortunately we were hoping for a cup of tea but they only had soft drinks and water. (Never mind it just meant we got to stop in for tea at Patisserie Valerie around the corner). There is seating outside but we opted for the small upstairs room and they brought us up our meals.Price for such a hot tourist spot was very reasonable in my mind.
