Everytime I come back to my birthplace, I have to at least have a decent pasty before I return home. And Nelly’s is a stopping point on the way back. I have tried many pastys over the years and while there are other (few) respectable ones, Nelly’s are the most authentic (proper job). No flaky pastry, proper pasty pastry (a dying skill) and full of the finest chuck steak, turnips (swede), potatoes & onions and plenty of salt’n’pepper seasoning. My Gran would have complimented this pasty. Shame I only bought 10 back with me. They barely made the journey back, devoured by my Son and I on the long 13hr trip back home. Looking forward to our next trip back.

When I’m Cornwall you have to have a pasty. So we went here and got two fresh out the oven and ate them by the River Fowey. They are delicious. Good and peppery as they should be and buttery crisp pastry. Also took some home for family. You much go here if I’m the area. Reminder: they close at 2pm each day. So get yours early.

Ignored on entry by 3 people behind the counter. When one of them finally worked up enough passive enthusiasm to ask me what I wanted I was 10 seconds shy of walking out. Communication carried out with back to me, which is kind of difficult for someone with a hearing impairment. Food and drink grudgingly passed over with a Cornish farewell on exit. (sneer and silence). Not going there again.

Lostwithiel is a lovely little Cornish town, there's not a huge amount of options for food, but Nelly's provides some lovely baked good that are perfect. There's plenty of benches and public spaces near the river to sit and eat your goodies.

This has to be the worst pastry I have ever experienced. I think it's probably due to being over-worked. Pastry has to be handled as little as possible to be good. This has been rolled a hundred times and is like shoe leather.

just came back from a short break at Lostwithiel, in Cornwall. I came across this place and i had read the reviews. I cannot understand those who gave a bad review....On our last day we went there and ordered a traditional pasty, a cheese pasty, a sausage roll scones and rock cakes for our 6 hour journey home. We didn't eat them until the evening when we arrived. What a delight! I can honestly say these are the best pasties i have ever tried and the shop and staff were great!! There were 2 ladies making fresh pasties while i ordered. The man who served us was really helpful too. The flaky pastry was amazing. The scones too were delicious. The rock cakes were massive and delicious.. I tried other scones and they can be dry and tasteless, but these were perfect, even the next day.. I highly recommend this lovely little bakery while in Cornwall. Its definitely worth a visit. I cant wait to go here again next time!

Probably the worst pastie ever. No flavour, veg was non existent and the small amount of meat inside was clumped together and resembled something I can’t mention here, dry as a bone, zero gravy...

The pasties we purchased were inedible. The pastry was incredibly thick and cloying with an almost scone like texture and the filling was far too peppery. We binned them. My husband loves pasties normally. (We even order frozen pasties to be sent to us as Hampshire supermarkets don't understand what a proper cornish pasty should be.) We used Nellie's (despite a previous slightly disappointing experience a year ago ) as we are aware of the excellent reviews. Definetly expected better than this.

We went to Lostwithiel mainly for the antiques and shopping. We didn't know about the free parking - how refreshing - and as we walked along we noticed Nelly's and their pasties in the window. So we bought a large steak pasty to try. It was amazingly good. We have set up a list of places we call the Pasty Trail and we're working our way through them. It's a personal preference but we loved Rowe's pasties and Chough's in Padstow. Elizabeth's in Coverack is also well worth a mention. So far though Nelly's is in front! We'll be back for more.

As a long time local resident of lostwithiel i have been purchasing various pies and pasties from frans up until nellies over many years, I can honestly say that the service is fantastic. The staff at nellies make sure you receive a friendly customer experience and you’re always treated well. But I must admit the pasties are lacking in so many ways, the filling usually bland and dull with grey meat and flavourless cubed veg, and the pasty is tough and flavourless also which for a shop that mostly sells pies and pasties you wouldn’t expect this. The pies and flans on the other hand are exceptional, flakey pastry and lovely fillings which I recommend , I recently managed to try the “cheese leek and ham pie” which always seem high in demand and it was superb! Going forward for this place to improve would involve a recipe change for the pasty, I did notice it was the cheapest price in the town and I think the flavour resembles this, I’m sure people would be happy to pay slightly more for better ingredients! overall a great establishment with good care to customers :)

This was our first visit to this shop. I had read good reviews of Fran's Pantry before visiting & from what I can gather Nelly's is following as good in their footsteps. We tried pasties, tarts, pig sticks(sausage rolls) & custard tarts on our visits & all were very good,my favourite being the custard tarts! Well worth a visit. Staff very friendly.

This is not Fran’s Pantry anymore, it has been taken over by Nelly’s. Nothing is the same, Fran’s cheese pasties were worth a 20 mile detour they were so good. Nelly’s cheese pasties have very little flavour and the filling consists largely of potato cubes. The pastry is tough, tasteless and heavy. It was very disappointing and we won’t be going back. The previous good reviews from last year must refer to when it was Fran’s Pantry. These days as Nelly’s this bakery now sells cheese pasties that are tough and tasteless and the pastry is too thick and heavy even on the custard tarts.

Always has been a shop of delights and is under a change of ownership. Still maintaining the very high standards, all home made sweet and savoury temptations including delicious pasties are on offer. Also a selection of local cheeses and milk can be obtained using your own container - a good innovation avoiding plastic. Don't miss this whether Cornish clotted cream or a yummy quiche is your fancy, all produce from Nelly's is mouthwatering.

We thought we'd support the local traders, but wish we hadn't. The pastry on the egg custard was underdone, heavy and had a peculiar flavour. The cherry/almond tart was cooked through, but the pastry case was really hard and dense, so much so that the pastry from both cakes went in the bin and I normally eat anything!

I decided to try a Cornish pasty for breakfast and risk the ire of my better half by bringing her a "full monty" pie. This had bacon, egg, mushroom and tomato inside a herby crust. She was delighted with it and we repeated the dose the next day. I also sampled some of the sweeter offerings and they were as good as the savoury items. The staff are friendly and efficient. Knowing that we would be staying near Lostwithiel, I checked to see if there was a pasty shop in town. I was delighted to find Fran's pantry online and the reviews seemed very good. Also my name is Fran, so the choice was made. When we got there on the Thursday it was gone 2pm so all the pasties were sold out. A good sign! So we got there early on Friday and bought our two treats. Oh they smelt good and were lovely and warm. We found a place by the river and tucked in. I can honestly say that we were both very disappointed. The pastry was appalling and although proper steak was used, the filling had no taste. Been here a few times now to try and find something nice to enjoy however I'm yet to have done this. The pastry with the pasties is very dry and also not much moisture in the pasty. Having not enjoyed these I decided to go for a cheese one, I was served by the miserable lady who also works in the chip shop across the road and she just shoved it in the bag without a word! Eating it in the car I found the pasty wasn't even hot, but not cold. It wasn't very nice. On another occasion I decided to go for a sausage roll, it was disgusting and I would go as far as inedible!! Sausages were horrible and barely cooked and the pastry was awfully and was again sold cold with a slight touch of warmth, I had to microwave it to be able to eat it but I still didn't enjoy it. One nice thing about the place is that you can see them making it all behind the counter and can see it's all fresh but what does that matter when the food isn't that great.
