We were staying in the area so decided to try this lovely traditional pub for our family meal. Although the decor is a little dated the food was excellent, it was very fresh and nicely prepared. The hosts were very helpful and friendly and were observing social distancing rules.

Great family run pub/b&b in a quaint Dales village. Newly refurbished rooms, great value food and friendly faces. The landlord really knows how to keep a cellar. We have visited on a number of occasions and never been disappointed (except perhaps by some of the landlord's jokes!) Perfect place to be based for a Dales holiday.

We arrived at 12pm earlier today and after sanitising my hands entered this lovely little pubI was asked to fill in a small piece of paper with my details then place my food order ( which was from a limited choice menu). There were sandwiches, hot and cold, meal deals, eg. Sandwich and fries or soup, and haddock and chips with mushy peas.We sat out in the gazebo and after a short wait our food arrived. Our food arrived in cardboard boxes which was a surprise to me but my wife explained it was to do with coronavirus and cleanliness etc.As for our food, my haddock was excellent with crispy battery and my wife enjoyed her sandwich and fries. With two pints of lemonade this totalled a very fair £24.This is the first time I have been into a pub since March and I struggled at times. Please be safe and support these wonderful little pubs.......before they are gone forever.Visited 22nd July 2020

We stopped for lunch on a short walk from Kettlewell. We were greeted by a very friendly polite young lady who served us a couple of perfectly poured pints. We sat by a lovely warm fire and ordered sandwiches & soup and after a short while a couple of plates arrived with doorstep sandwiches and bowls of soup. The sandwiches (tuna crunch and cheese & pickle) were generously filled and very filling. The soup (vegetable) was lovely, smooth as velvet and was warming & delicious - just what we needed. The sandwiches were so big we saved half of each for the walk home! But not before we had a pint and a half of Black Sheep bitter. The young lady behind the bar was a credit to the pub. We spoke about the pub being in the heart of the community and you can see why.

We decided to write a 'best' and 'worst' review of our recent holiday and this place was most definitely the best! The Fox and Hounds Inn is small and cosy with really friendly, cheerful staff. We had a great meal here in what's a pub for locals and visitors. Probably the best value of the three meals we had. The dedicated dining area is relatively small, with maybe 5 tables, and they spread the reservations. It was disappointing, then, to see others amble in over half an hour late for their reservations (but then this is relatively remote, perhaps Friday night traffic got in the way). Hard working chef and staff will serve you well. You will, however, struggle to park so book early!

We had always been put off visiting this pub in the past, as the landlord had a reputation for rudeness. However, we heard that the pub, after a period of closure, had re-opened with new management. We saw the menu posted in the village noticeboard (on the side of the pub) and thought it looked promising. It was so good, we went twice in one week! Our first visit was on a Monday evening and we were greeted by the barmaid/waitress with a broad smile. We chose to eat in the bar and sat opposite a couple who asked for the fire to be lit, as they were cold. Although it was still a warm-ish evening, the barmaid lit the fire without a murmur. It was so lovely, and made the room even cosier. The food on both our visits (the second visit was 3 days later and the welcome as pleasant as the first visit) was very well cooked (my husband's lamb came pink, juicy and tender) and the veggie options were tasty. Portion size was just right, though we were so full we sadly couldn't manage a pudding, although they looked delicious. Not a huge menu, (but still plenty of choice) which told us that the food was freshly cooked to order, with the focus on quality.

I stayed here after attending a day’s fly fishing course at Kilnsey Park - which was fabulous due to the setting and brilliant instructor Mark Gambles. I had booked a room for Friday evening for myself and Liz, so she could enjoy walking in the breathtaking countryside here (some of the most spectacular and dramatic scenery anywhere in the world, let alone England) but due to work commitment she couldn’t come along so I braved it and went alone. Liz missed out! I enjoyed a fabulous meal in the evening in the packed bar restaurant and had interesting chats with locals and holidaymakers. Karen’s homemade chicken and chorizo pie was fabulous! Whitebait starter and pudding (sticky toffee with ice cream) were both wonderful too. I over-ate and enjoyed every minute of it! Excellent red wine too - couldn’t ask for more. Ian and Karen were fabulous hosts, and I was greeted and made to feel really welcome by Zarina on my arrival. All-in-all, with a very comfortable room in this beautiful old pub - a superb experience. 5 stars!

We arrived sodden, pooped, and hungry, having taken our own detour in Kettlewell to avoid aggressive bulls in a field smack on The Dales Way. We regularly stay at a cottage in the village, but until this year we have been "unwelcome" at the Fox and Hounds as we always have our dog with us. Thankfully (for everyone in the village) there are new owners, so the pub is now a much more friendly place to visit! They now have a good variety on the lunch and dinner menu, with at least 2 vegetarian options. So pleased to have discovered this place on a run up the Dales on a blistering Sunday. It was perfect because my DH and two teenage daughters didn't fancy Sunday roast pub food. The food here is simple fresh soup sandwiches and chips but done really well. The roasted tomato soup was homemade, the bread for the sandwiches was sliced thickly with delicious fillings. Barely a seat left outside as walkers and motorists enjoyed the sun and a drink. The Black Sheep was kept well and I later saw the trouble taken to carefully clean the pipes when the barrel was changed. New customers were being told that all possible food orders had already been taken but when I asked they realised I was backpacking and couldn't easily move on so offered me Fish and Chips. This guy would give Victor Meldrew a run for his money. The miserable git and his ignorant wife should be driven out of town by a baying mob with burning torches. 13 of us arrived mid walk for drinks for all and food for some. While ordering drinks my daughter asked if he had a bin for a can that she had from an earlier drink. When he said NO! There's a bin around the corner and up the street! We thought he was joking but sadly not. The food was over priced and awful, the new potatoes had been on the boil since Christmas. When serving the food Mrs Charisma dumped down the kids plates on the table with a "There's some big kids round here!" comment as a dig that they didn't order from the main menu!I could go on and on.....Like others have said its the only pub in town or we would have been long gone. On asking about him in Kettlewell we got a roll of the eyes and "Didn't he try and sell you the place?" He'll never sell it as the reputation recovery would cost more that it's worth. Owner professionally grumpy, and said he can't wait to sell the place. However it is a lovely old pub in a lovely location. I decided to err on the side of caution and went for soup and sandwiches, tinned soup and 2 slices of bread with a piece of cheese in it, felt like I had travelled back to the 70's. Friends were more adventurous but one did comment that she wasn't sure what she had just eaten. I don't like leaving poor reviews preferring to recommend the positive. But this merits a 'watch out!'

We stayed in Starbotton, and I was looking forward to a pint of Black Sheep (thats what the pub sign said), inside we got a lukewarm welcome from the grumpy landlord, only to find the beers on offer were 'electric' Guinness (from a can), draught Carlsberg and Timothy Taylors amber something (Not Landlord). We decided to eat, and got non home cooked cash and carry food, at rather expensive prices.despite the stone floors the pub does not welcome either walkers or dogs! The landlord moaned a lot about wanting to retire...he should! For a 'Dales' pub, this is a sad place that desperately needs new management.

The Fox and Hounds has a substantial and varied menu for such a little place. Food was very good - we had the fishcakes and a couple of the vegetarian options. The outdoor seating was very pretty. Starbotton is less than a 5-minute drive from Kettlewell and the pub has its own parking space at the back.

We stayed in Starbotton for a week and ate at the Fox and Hounds several times. The food is delicious (steak pie especially) -four empty plates every night. Landlord a character with entertaining opinions but always polite and friendly. Definitely recommend as a good place to try.

The pub is right by the side of a narrow road and looked attractive in the rare summer sunlight. It was 13:00 and there only two of the outside tables occupied (that should have rung an alarm bell) so I stopped. It looked interesting on the inside and advertised live music. I thought I had struck it lucky until I placed the order with the miserable Landlord. I should have walked out then. Not being all that far from Wensleydale I ordered a cheese and onion sandwich (£4.50) and a soft drink (£1.60), I was driving. I thought the total of £6.10 seemed a bit steep until I read the menu which said the Wensleydale option was £4.95. Regretting not looking at the menu but ever the optimist I thought it will be a bit special for that price.Wrong! The bread was ordinary thin sliced and the cheese was grated 'mousetrap'. After the first bite I opened the sandwich to check whether there was any onion in it. Yes there was a few finely cut slices, cut so thin there was nothing to taste. The plate did have a bit of garnish on the side. Caveat emptor

Don't go into the hospitality trade if you are a missable bugger. End of.Went there with family and have to say the bloke behind the bar was the most miserable person I have met in A long time. We asked if they had any cakes, response was "this isn't a cafe and won't be whilst I'm here". Overheard when someone asked for a beer recommendation "that one's strong, that one's weak take your pick I don't drink beer". No thanks for our custom it went on. If there was another place in the village we would have left. It's a shame really as the pub should be a warm hostel for walkers and villagers alike but not whilst Grumpy Mcgrumpy is there. If you are reading this mr landlord do you and your wife a favour - sell up as you obviously don't want to be there.

Called in here for a refreshing drink on our walk with friends. This is the only time we have found the pub open!! We had 2 coffees and 2 cups of tea in all, and we were charged £14!!!! Think the bar man needs to review his prices! He stood and moaned about all the residents of his village and became quite personal, he says he wants to leave the "Dales" never to return, and I guess the majority of his neighbours would be pleased if he did just that! Such a shame - as this is a lovely little pub with lots of character.

I wanted to add a basically positive review having seen those written by others on the accommodation here. We didn't stay but did eat and drink here and it's a nice village pub. The food is quite passable if not gourmet and the prices are acceptable. The place itself is clean, warm and friendly though very quiet during the week. I'd go back!

Brilliant small pub in the middle of nowhere but a gem none the less. Ramblers can't pass without a quick 'swifty muck shifter'!!

We stopped here on the way back to Scotland after a few days in the Dales. It was a late lunch and the place was about a third full. The staff were friendly and welcomed us in. Decor is like a homely.
