We both enjoyed a delicious Sunday roast at The Anchor. The food was reasonably priced and the staff friendly and welcoming. The puddings looked equally as nice. We shared an Eton mess which was so generous in size we couldn’t finish it between us. We will definitely return.

Food has been just average, service has been friendly enough and quick, the banoffie pie was really good. The mains were not necessarily impressive and my partner steak has not been cooked to perfection. Came for a family meal and was not disappointed. We all had different meals, fish and chips, sea bass and pizza and all of them were cooked perfectly. My mom and nan aren't big eaters so had a starter and mini pud with a hot drink instead. They came out at the same time as the mains and nothing was too much trouble. For dessert we had the honey pot, banoffe pie and sticky toffee pudding. They were presented beautifully and tasted delicious. Everyone really enjoyed the food and the log fires really add to the atmosphere. Shout out to Ravi for being a great host and scarlett for giving the dog loads of attention, she loved all the love and treats.

Visited for a birthday meal The meal was dreadful and very very over priced . I was looking forward to the triple cooked chips !!!!! Well what can I say they were lukewarm oven chips at most my lasagna a basic pub grub staple was not good very well ver cooked and as for my husband and daughters beef bourguignon that was so dry no sauce and burnt carrots‍♀️ Why did we not complain rather then just look at each other in awkward silence was because my daughter who’s birthday it was is shy and hates confrontation so yes we put up with it , rather than upset her birthday meal My husband went to pay and was given a copy of his card receipt but no actual itemised bill which is not normally a problem but because the bill was so expensive he asked for it , on checking it we realised the drinks were very expensive and we were charged an over 20 pounds service charge which we thought was a little naughty . My husband did call and complain(very out of character ) and after a week was refunded the money back on to his card .Will not be visiting again soon if ever.

After working in the restaurant trade for many years I can spot a meal that has sat under heat lamps for too long. It is, however, something of an ability to have a burnt outer layer of lasagne whilst cold in the middle, a soggy bun, but cremated burger and what can only be described as raw halloumi fries. The flowers on the table were nearly dead (not the end of the world) service was polite but really quite slow (acceptable if the food is worth it) but we were only asked if everything was ok after the edible parts were eaten…what a shame.Same chain on the other side of town is exemplary (the mermaid) do not be fooled into thinking that because they are opened by the same company and that the menu is the same the quality or even quantity will be comparable, they are most definitely not.

To keep it short - we ordered a prawn cocktail starter each which looked lovely on the menu, when it came It was nothing as described, basically a joke to serve well below standard for any resteraunt/pub. 1 hour in and I had ordered a 10 oz ribeye to be told they did not have any, I complained to the waitress that It had been an hour and now tour telling me ? I also complained about our starter. I then opted for the chicken & mush pie which came with undercooked vegetables. My wife had the salmon and she then started to worry if this was cooked enough. We are a couple that never complain, no fault to the waitress but just not good enough. We wont be going for food again but will probably still use the anchor for a drink.

I live local to the anchor and I've had to send the last 4 meals back I've ordered. So my long term friend who I've not seen for years I wanted to show her my local pub . She ate there with me and I was so embarrassed as thinking it was Christmas the food would be far better, no way just as bad. So embarrassing. We ordered fish finger sandwiches with sides and children's meals. The fish came out stone cold . James the manager was called over and asked us if we wanted a fresh meal we said no as had waited over an hour for lunch and also we were put off by this point. It's a shame as it's a nice friendly bar area to sit and have a nice drink and catch up and the staff are pleasant but the food is absolutely appalling and I'm so disappointed I spend so much there with my family on meals but we now have all chosen to eat else where.

Being fairly local we booked a table at the Anchor for 7pm on a Wednesday evening, it was only after booking I read the reviews, which quite frankly where pretty poor, so we did not expect much. We were however pleasantly surprised, it had a nice friendly atmosphere and the staff were very welcoming, I ordered the fish and chips and my partner ordered the gammon, it arrived quickly and was well cooked, lovely large portion of battered cod, and my partner was impressed with quality of the gammon, served with two eggs and a portion of chips (my partner would have liked a few more chips on the plate) personally I thought it was just enough. We then had the trio of ice cream which again seemed a smallish portion, but I have to say it was quality ice cream and was delicious. So in conclusion we really enjoyed our meal, it was nicely cooked and was enough for us to leave feeling full up and not uncomfortably bloated, as is often the case after eating out. We enjoyed our evening and will definitely be returning.

Spent last night at The Anchor in Coven for our annual Xmas meal. When booking we were given a Christmas menu so had all made our choices before arriving. Turns out the actual Xmas menu had changed and the new menu is significantly pared down even though the website shows the original menu. My sea bass choice had gone as had the steak though they still appeared on the main menu as did all of the missing items. When questioning the waitress she agreed and we could still order these at the Christmas menu deal price of £25.95. She returned to tell us there was only one sea bass (we wanted two) or sirloin steak. Surprising as it was only 7pm and not exactly the middle of the Christmas rush. I settled on the salmon and we questioned what steak could be had as a replacement for the sirloin as nothing was offered, on our suggestion, the waitress let us order the rump from the main menu instead. For starters three had the duck parfait. I must congratulate the chef on their skill in slicing the pate so thinly. It consisted of a sliver of pate, two slices of dry bread, chutney and garnish. On the main menu this cost £5.50! It tasted fine. For the main course a friend ordered the belly pork. Her face fell when that arrived. It looked wholly unappetising and was the size of a child’s portion with just potato as accompaniment and the gravy on top was set hard. So disappointing that it was sent back. The Christmas dinner and salmon had arrived at the same time so a further Xmas dinner was requested as a replacement. We waited well over ten minutes for the final two meals. The replacement steak was fine but the sea bass also very disappointing, with the ‘sauce’ covering the crispy skin, rendering it soggy and again, a very small portion. The Christmas dinners were good other than the roast potatoes being soggy and the gravy set. The salmon was well cooked and a reasonable size. For dessert, three ordered crème brûlée - again toddler portions, approx 1cm in the bottom of a dish, one had curdled so that went back, we didn’t bother replacing it. The Christmas pudding and custard ordered by the remainder was completely cold so was returned for a blast in the microwave. Not a cracker, festive table cloth or Santa napkin to be seen. The waitress was very attentive and kept the drinks flowing, we did see quite a lot of her with the issues over our three courses.I must point out that we are not grumpy old women who take pleasure in complaining in fact we dine out every couple of months and in over ten years have never needed to return food before. We won’t be visiting The Anchor again.

My cousin and her husband drove down from Stoke-on-Trent to meet for a Christmas lunch. We are local. Before last year's lockdown we used the Anchor fairly often but will not be returning.Having arrived at 12.50pm for a 1pm booking we waited 1 hr and 45 mins for our main course. The starters had taken over 30 minutes. Every time we asked where our meals were we were told they were short staffed but people around us seemed to be getting their meals before us. We had all ordered the turkey dinner. I have to say it was the worst roast dinner I have ever been served. The only edible part was the turkey and carrots. The roast potatoes, parsnips and the one tiny ball of stuffing were all so overcooked you could not even cut them. The sprouts were also over cooked. As a turkey dinner I would also have expected a better selection of veg and pigs in blankets but if the rest had been edible this would have been forgiven. All in all our visit was a total disappointment and we will not be returning or recommending it to anyone.

My partner and I decided on a meal out and it’s been a little while since I’ve been to the anchor. This his first time. We’ve been to other vintage inns and both food and service have been excellent. The Anchor fell far short of this. I wish I had looked at trip advisor before I’d booked. I trusted the group name and assumed this would be the usual high standard. Not the case. We had two course and were in the restaurant 2 hours, we rushed the bill at the end. We left hungry and disappointed. My partner has the prawn and scallops to start, he received two prawns. Counts as plural I guess, but very disappointing. The speed of delivery was woeful, as they tidied around us we still hadn’t had our main. I wish I’d cancelled at that point and left. The veg Wellington was underwhelming and luke warm. I had wanted dessert but we got the hint after two hours and decided against it. Before I hear the, “well what do you expect with 50% off” we paid full price. I left the feedback as requested in their email. Response lacked any real compassion, understanding or indeed what James and team are going to do about it. I’m sure the response on here will be the same. In a world where competition is a plenty attention to detail is key.

It is with somewhat of a heavy heart that I have had to compose this review as although we would not be so bold as to call ourselves regulars at the Anchor, we have been before and do not live very far away from it. It has been more successful than last night granted, but the experience we had last night as a family does not fill me with confidence of a return visit. I also don't feel right in recommending to friends and other family members after thisThe first thing that went wrong is that the server/waitress was overly keen. My wife had just been to take our 4 year old to the toilet and still had her coat on so was not even settled at the table before the waitress was asking us what drinks we wanted! I am all for attentive service but this was a little too keen! Therefore we kindly asked her if we could have a few more minutes whilst getting our little girl sorted and then ourselves settled. She did do this and then came back shortly after which was fine. The next thing that went wrong is that when ordering our food I noticed in the description of the steaks that there was no mention of onion rings included. I did feel this strange as I'm sure I saw it included on the restaurant dedicated menu of the Vintage Inn app; however I presumed that this may have changed and therefore ordered a side order of onion rings. The server did not think to advise me that they were already included :(Both my wife and I like peppercorn sauce and were looking to order this too but alas we were told that this was not available and therefore it was a choice of beef dripping or bearnaise sauce. We slightly reluctantly said that we would have jug of bearnaise between two and settled on that. We also ordered the children's lasagne for our 4 year old daughter and that concluded the meal ordering process.Around 10 minutes later one of the servers came to our table and apologised as the lasagne for our daughter was no longer available and there had been a miscommunication from the kitchen! This naturally disappointed our daughter and although once again apologetic towards her directly, the server could sense our daughter was disappointed. She had to make do with pizza, chips and peas. I was started to get somewhat perturbed at these things that were building up but accepted it and off the server went to the kitchen to amend the order.Time passed and our meals were then brought to our table maybe around 15/20 minutes later. My wife and I both noticed that there was a jug of sauce on each plate and also a portion of onion rings on each plate. I questioned this with the server as it did not seem correct but she advised that the chef may well have distributed the portions equally on each plate! I thought this strange but again accepted it and we went to commence our meal. Now the next issues - Both my wife's meal and mine were barely what you would call 'luke warm'. However we were by that time so hungry that we carried on eating it. The sauce jugs were in fact filled with beef dripping and not the bearnaise we had ordered!I questioned this also and although the server was going to go and get the kitchen to make up some bearnaise (clearly been forgotten), I told her not to bother and we agreed that it would be removed from the final bill. The actual taste of the meal was ok; however the temperature of it did make it less enjoyable and my wife commented on the amount of fat on the steak which was also somewhat disappointing! Not long after my wife and I had finished our meals, the server returned and asked to take our plates away. Our daughter, who can admittedly eat slowly was indeed still eating her pizza, so reluctantly I said she could take our plates but not our daughter's as she had clearly not finished. I understand the need to turnaround tables quickly but this practice of not waiting till all diners at the table have finished does grate on me and seems not quite the right etiquette. We were also not asked how our meal was (presumably as the servers knew that there had been issues...)We were asked if we wanted desert, but by this time with all the aforementioned issues we decided against this and asked instead for the final bill. This actually did turn out to be the final thing! When the bill was presented to me, I noticed that the charge for the bearnaise sauce was still showing even though it had been agreed this was to be removed! I pointed this out to the server who then questioned my judgement and said she had removed it! I checked again and would have certainly admitted if I had been wrong but I was indeed correct. There had been a cost reduction of - £1.25 for the sauce; however as you will see from the menu it states bearnaise is at £1.75 per steak. There was a cost on the bill for £.3.50 so I knew that this is what it was and requested again that she remove it.She reluctantly went off to remove this and returned with an amended bill. I then proceeded to pay this, but was not very impressed with the lack of an apology over this oversight and also with them not asking how the meal was, as I would certainly have told them what I am reporting now.Disappointed as given the raft of Black Friday deals this week, we could have chosen another brand in the group such as Ember Inns or Sizzling Pubs which were offering the same level of discount, but we chose Vintage Inns as we perceive them to be of higher quality.

Me and my partner stopped off here on way home from travelling for a Sunday roast, can't fault the place. Staff and service great, food amazing. Loved sitting by the fire. Shocked at some of the bad reviews

Sitting canalside this pub has a great location. We also had a warm welcome when we entered which was nice. The food though was expensive for what it was. Pretty uninspiring if I'm totally honest. The staff were great which made me give an additional star. I certainly wouldn't go out of my way for a return sadly.

we regularly visit for Sunday lunch - the staff are so welcoming to my elderly parents and remember their dietary requirements which is lovely as it makes them feel special. Food is excellent and the pub and facilities are spotlessly clean. Can highly recommend.

I had the scallops to start, as someone has previously said they were over priced and very very small! No pork belly, no salmon and no peppercorn sauce, I understand there are shortages but jeez not even a straw for my gin! Seemed to wait a while for all our food even though it wasn’t busy, I’ve had some lovely meals In the past but sadly I can’t say the same about today’s visit, we will try the meals again in the summer but if it’s as disappointing as today’s visit we will not be returning which is a shame as it’s a nice pub in a great location.

The service was excellent Holly was lovely. The meals.. The starters lovely but my starter has a ladies hair in it, the mains my slow cooked beef had dried out and tough my husbands belly pork again has a ladies hair I'm it and there were a few key elements missing from the dish.. like crackling lol. The pudding was lovely but the Tia Maria coffee was cold. The person who sat us came with my pudding and hadn't been informed of the issues, or feedback and removed our starters which is not what we were giving feed back for but was a nice gesture. On the plus side the atmosphere was lovely and what was great was we managed to park outside canal side for our wedding anniversary meal.

Booked table which was very easy on line. Had lovely window seat overlooking canal. Staff very welcoming and friendly and the inn overall has a lovely atmosphere. But I'm afraid the food let this place down today. Sunday lunch beef was very tough and veg lukewarm at best. Let's hope this was just a bad day in the kitchen.

We visited the Anchor on Wednesday this week only for a Drink It was outside beautiful seating surroundings and a very Helpful barman who very kindly carried the drinks outside for me .One of our 3 said he would like to return with us and his wife. We did on Friday. We bought drinks and yet again a very pleasent and helpful lady carried them out for us ! we ordered food. It took ages to come When the starters arrived eventually They Were overcooked rubbery scallops overpriced The main courses we had to ask how long were they going to be They finally Arrived The Lasagne was burnt to the side of the dish, The hunters chicken was like shoe leather The fish was battered too much The chips and trimming were just ok Generaly Dissapointing We may certainly enjoy another drink there but certainly not the food

We often used to eat here and, despite hearing bad reviews from friends, we decided to chance it again. We were hoping for a Sunday Roast but they had completely sold out by 6pm ! I chose gammon - the two fried eggs looked like they’d been cooked the day before and were stone cold, the gammon was lukewarm. My husband’s chicken pie was hot and delish though. At least one person from every table around us complained about their food and numerous plates were being sent back. Staff were friendly as always though but the service was very slow, that may have been due to the high number of diners though. We didn’t complain as couldn’t be bothered to wait for replacements but definitely won’t be returning

I recently visited the Anchor as we had some dining out vouchers and it was the closest pub we could use.I've been to the Anchor loads of times over the years, usually for a beer by the canal. On the rare occasions I have eaten I have always had the same impression, the food is expensive for what it is.This most recent visit was a real letdown. Our meal came to £50, £30 of that coming from the vouchers. I think the £20 we actually paid was probably what the meal and experience was actually about right. There is no way on earth the food was worth the price. My steak was £20, and honestly, I have had better £5 steaks from Aldi.I ordered medium and it came well done. The triple cooked chips were pretty flavourless and more reminiscent of oven chips. It was just really average. My wife's food was the same. Really disappointing, without being terrible. It was all just very forgettable.Of course the establishment will say I should have flagged at the time, that;s not something I like to do unless I really need to. I just mark it down as a bad experience and say I'll not go back.I actually would go back, but only for a pint by the canal. Not for food.

Food was tasty and good value for money, unfortunately service has let you down on this occasion. After finishing our meals and paying our bill we decided to have some drinks outside, after a short amount of time we were informed you would be closing earlier to which we asked to be informed of last orders the waitress agreed that she would come out and inform us. Half an hour went by…. Nothing, we then went to the bar to be told we’re closed, the waitress must of been in the toilet - Ruined our night with friends, something so simple yet so annoying

Lovely setting by a canalside so can understand why this Pub appears to be popular, shame about it being pricey with very precise portion sizes, you'll not get one carrot more from this chain.I get the impression the Sunday Roast Meals are pre-packaged, warmed up on the day and slapped onto the plates in any old fashion, wasn't offered unlimited gravy either, as stated on the menu. The 'Vintage' chain either need to increase portion sizes, or at least offer a larger portion of vegtables, or failing that they need to lower their prices. We all like a break from standing over a hot oven, followed by the washing up but you would be better off purchasing a M&S Roast Chicken or Roast Beef ready meal, more substantial and a third of the price.Personal experience, kept waiting longer than expected, poor portion size, luke warm on arrival at the table and expensive.

We have dined at The Anchor for years and up until recently have found staff warm and welcoming and the food of good quality. Sadly on our last two visits our experience has been poor. When we visited a few weeks ago whilst the food was ok the attitude of the staff member that greeted and the staff member providing table service could be described as nothing but rude. On this occasion we put it down to them having a bad day and made no comment. Today we booked for Sunday lunch and were greeted by the same staff as previous who have no customer service skills what so ever. The food left a lot to be desired with most of it being left uneaten. Did we complain….no because based on the attitude of staff we had already had contact with couldn’t really see the point. Didn’t stay for dessert as weren’t prepared to spend / waste any more money and sadly won’t be visiting again any time soon.

I haven’t visited the anchor for a while due to the covid lock Down but went with family after a visit to cosford air museum The pub is warm and welcoming (some staff a little less welcoming !!!! ) May be they were under staffed I don’t know !!!! Starter and main meal was great good portion size hot and tasty we all commented on how nice it was However I’m a celiac and choice is limited this is getting to be a pain at most places I visit This needs review Pudding choice is a let down I had cream brûlée’s as like I said I’m limited to choice it was £5/£6 not a garnish biscuit or offering if any fresh fruit to accompany it ????? I think that is not value for money The young girl who served our table was brilliant however very young with striking eye make up she made up for the little niggles we had Star staff member I think

My husband and I visit this place often, however this was our first Sunday Lunch with family and two small children. Most of us opted for the roast lunch, well what a mistake that turned out to be. This has to be the worst we have ever experienced especially for what they charge, I would have expected a lot more. The meat Turkey in my case didn’t look like a carved from a joint, one broccoli spear, two half slices of carrot, roast potatoes all burned, so much so couldn’t cut them, and a quarter of roast onion… really roast onion on a Sunday lunch . Sorry Anchor but you need to see how other restaurants serve Sunday roasts.

We moored our boat up close by and called in in the hopes of stopping for a meal this evening. We were told all of the tables inside were booked and only outside was available. I thought this strange as several tables were empty and it looked like there was plenty of space. After a full day of boating, we were hungry, we had very limited food aboard the boat and so opted to eat outside, even though it was raining lighly. We waited 40 minutes in the rain, moving the parasols for coverage. Food didn't arrive soon my husband went to find out where it was. He noticed there were still several clear tables. We were then told we could sit inside! I question why we were not seated inside when we first arrived. All of the empty tables remained empty throughout. The food was very good and we stayed for dessert too but the welcome and seating issue is a mystery.

We were visiting just as Covid restrictions had been lifted so decided to eat outside being as the weather was great. Lovely to sit beside the canal and watch the odd few barges passing by.Having decided to eat outside we did have to go in and order from the bar. We were given our our drinks to take to the table but the food and cutlery was brought to the table by a friendly young man.The menu has the usual range of pub food but portions are quite large so that although the prices are a little more expensive than other pubs this compensates.

The food was generally very good, especially the pizzas, however the “green salad” with “added halloumi” was not at all worth the 14.95. Its initial price was £11.95, which included two asparagus spears and three pieces of watermelon of crouton-like proportions. I had three slices of halloumi added to the dish, for £3 which is quite unreasonable considering a whole block of the stuff can be bought for £2. I would definitely suggest providing more. Despite this the salad was tasty.Another point to consider is that the vegetarian options were quite sparse and they could have offered a couple more dishes. The salad is pictured in this reviewThis pub/restaurant could be a little bit more welcoming in general. The manager or who we thought is the manager isn’t welcoming at all. We waited quite a long time to receive our food and drinks with some of our drinks being not bought out therefore meaning we had to ask again. Overall the food is nice but the portion sizes could be a bit bigger with some dishes. The serving staff were very friendly.
