We've planned this trip ages ago to go London from Cornwall with friend for one of us birthday. This was the only food I had through all day and I had the most horrible food poisoning ever. We've had beef burgers and girls had veggie wraps along with chips. Under one of the burgers there was a piece of paper and meat was suspicious. My heart rate went up to 193bpm, I had all the things that could possibly happen due to the food poisoning. Thanks for messing up such an important day for us, we had to go back to our apartment as I was feeling terrible. I hope staff sees and realises that their food does impact people day/days. Again, never trust places like this because you don't know what they're serving you. Ciao! 😨

My partner booked this place for my birthday, what a lovely secret little treat in the heart of Clapham! Secret buzzer, great decor even on the stairwell up to the restaurant and food full of flavours - the deluxe picnic for 2 is well presented (on a hipster mini-picnic table of course!) and more like tapas but nevertheless filling and samples Jimmy's ideas really well, esp the salmon & duck egg scotch egg & tuna tartar! Wine £20+ but some nice bottles on the list, including desert wine which I'm a sucker for. Cocktails are raved about but didn't try on this visit. Pudding (secret garden surprise?!) a lovely OTT chocolate desert, so sweet we shared. Service ok, we were left pretty much to it (I'd rather that than have someone hover by the table!) but for some strange reason they put the a/c on midway through our meal which not only meant the hot food in the picnic went cold but also that I sat with goosebumps. It took two requests for the waitress to turn it down / off by which point food (& me!) were cold. However this was the only gripe. I still think the place warrants the 5* for food and overall experience. Only there for another month as a pop up, would return for a new one as the venue was charming.

I was looking for a free corkage restaurant in the Clapham area and found this excellent restaurant who offered us half priced corkage. In communication with the restaurant prior to arrival and pre-booked food which they opened the restaurant on a Monday night just because our booking. Annoyed that all my guests failed to arrive but the service and flexibility was at a high standard. The food was outstanding as I had foie gras pate and sea bream complimented by the wine we brought. Would definitely recommend this restaurant to other locals. Unfortunately had to leave to catch a train but service and food was top notch! Would go again any day of the week.

This is a fantastic venue with truly excellent service. The wine list is quite good and the cocktail menu is EXCELLENT. I really enjoyed coming here. On the downside, I thought my main course (plaice) was quite bland and lacking in flavour. The dessert, too, (tart tatin) didn't blow me away. It was very pricey (about £180 for 3 people, with wine) and even though I quite enjoyed myself I'm not sure if it was worth spending that much.

Four O Nine has one of those effortlessly laid back atmospheres that has clearly taken a lot of work to create! Candles and unique furniture make the mood romantic. We landed here after rushing around London all day stressing, and the moment we walked into the restaurant that all soaked away. This is the second time I have given my formerly-favourite restaurant another chance. Unfortunately I was again disappointed, and rather embarrassed in front of my 6 guests on New Year's Eve. We weren't told of the poor-value fixed menu for the evening at the time of booking (neither on the internet, or later when I called the restaurant directly to amend the booking) but no matter, it was NYE so let's just relax..... To my surprise the restaurant was no busier than a weekend night, but this was not reflected in the service. The canapes were dry and the pastry gave away that they had clearly been sitting around for some time in a humid kitchen. The "mind-blowing cocktail" promised on the menu was in fact rum and prosecco with a mint leaf. Who wants to drink that? I noticed most of the restaurant left theirs, and it was odd that the menu said "Why not try a porn star martini?" even though this was not available as part of the deal. I noticed other diners around us had a similar absurd conversation, asking for the cocktail list only to be told there was no choice of drink. Our waiter was sour-faced in the extreme: bad-tempered, openly arguing with the maitre d', and generally unavailable to us. We were given a pleasant mushroom and truffle oil soup, but (as per my last visit) the bread was forgotten. We had been seated for an hour and a half before our starters arrived, after I had asked four times where they were. Mediocre mains hastily followed, then a long lonely wait for dessert. By this time we had abandoned our plans to spend midnight with friends and ended up stuck in Four 0 Nine with a host of other bewildered, and by this time, plastered, diners (for there was little else to do but keep ordering wine). Gutted to conclude that what was once a gem is now marred by appalling service, and it is a waste of a fantastic venue hidden above the busy streets of Clapham. Four O Nine has now had two second chances from me and it won't be getting a third.

Beautifully candle lit so perfect for a nice meal as a couple, but also informal enough atmosphere to go with a group of friends. Four O Nine is one of those places that many locals still don't seem to know about, and I'm a little hesitant writing a review as this is perhaps partly why it's special. Located above a pub and accessible through an out-of-sight door, Four O Nine is a great find; the food, cocktail and wine list, and service. The private room is also perfect for groups of about 12. Expect to pay £70-100 for 2, with wine.

Just the fact that it almost has a secret entrance makes it feel quite special and the restaurant itself is beautifully decorated with a bit of edgy to add some character which adds to the atmosphere. The hostess was fantastic ensuring there was a constant flow of tea and coffee. The tea was served in cute tea pots (wide range of tea options), the food was served on cute tiers and was absolutely delicious with a good variety to keep everyone satisfied. Given the amazing reviews on trip advisor, i was expecting food at Four O Nine to rival the likes of "Trinity". But far from it. They simply do not compare in taste and service. It was okay food for the prices charged. But it wasn't amazing or something to write about. You will have a good meal, but i prefer to eat at Trinity down the road or some of the other restaurants in london / Wimbledon. For that reason, it isn't value for money and i will not be returning. We stumbled over this restaurant whilst browsing the Internet. A secret door, bookings only.....sounded exciting. They advertise bringing your own wine for no charge on a Sunday night so we booked and went off, expensive bottle of Bordeaux in hand. The restaurant looks beautiful. The waiter wasn't sure about the 'bring your own' deal but after checking with the manager it was fine. Then he broke the cork in our wine. After this damage was done he confessed that he couldn't use an opener properly?!?! He then hesitated when we asked to try and save the bottle ourselves saying "I don't want to get in trouble". Oh dear, I was not happy but managed to save the wine myself. The food was average but only average and, in my opinion, it was overpriced. Our bill (for 2 people, 3 courses but shared dessert - no wine charge) was over £90.This is a pub restaurant that they have tried to make exclusive. Beautifully decorated but will not be returning.

We went midweek and took advantage of the toptable offer (3 courses for £23) which really is great value. Surprisingly the restaurant wasn't very busy at all. This could be as it's a little tricky to find, just a door which looks like a regular front door and you press a doorbell/buzzer to ask to be let in and then go upstairs to the restaurant. Don't let that put you off though. Once you find the place, you'll have a lovely time.

Went with a group for friends birthday. We ate from set menu which was 2 course for £20 or 3 courses for £23.I got to try 5 dishes as sampled my boyfriends dishes too. All were extremely tasty and well presented. From scotched egg and seared tuna for starters. Mains of pork loin and a chicken/duck dish wrapped in Parma ham. Pudding of chocolate mousse with strawberries and raspberries. Would say the pudding and pork were the weakest of the dishes, but only by comparison, the 2 pork loins were still very tender and accompanied by well cooked veg. The chocolate mousse could have been bit richer.Service was good and friendly. It was reasonably attentive.Cocktails list was of a good size and standard prices of about £8. I had the limoncello and prosecco which was nicely balanced cost not too sweet and boyfriend enjoyed the gin garden which was refreshing. The wine list also was balanced so could get a very drinkable bottle of wine for about £23. Atmosphere was cosy, nice furnishings and mood lighting that didn't leave us in darkness. The location, being up stairs of Clapham North pub, through what looked like the front door to a flat, requiring you to ring a buzzer, makes it feel like a hidden secret. I hope it's not too hidden as hope they do enough trade to keep going as I'd like to go again.

I had high expectations for this place and thought I might have found a hidden gem. Alas, that was not to be the case. The venue is really very nice, plush furnishings and moody lighting overlooking the sights and sounds of Clapham north. The front of house staff were also similarly very sweet and all terribly helpful (at times a little over eager but rather that than disinterested!). Cocktails and wine list all good, not madly overpriced and a good range. But the food is the real let down here. Our starters were okay though not great: the crab mayonnaise was served so cold as to prevent any hint of crab taste emerging and the duck salad a little heavy on the salt. The real problem came however with the main courses. My fellow diners had the rib-eye steak, which was fine though nothing particularly special, with triple cooked chips (again a bit of a let down - far too pale and lacking in flavor). The promised peppercorn sauce was also so meager as to be almost non-existent. The real problem was the grouse however. It was cooked within an inch of its life and so rendered inedible. Even had it been cooked correctly I am not convinced the dish would really have worked as the beans and wild mushrooms were unlikely to complement or cut through the richness of the grouse, at least not in the form I received them. It was not a patch on the grouse served at Trinity that I had the week before. I sent the dish back and the front of house staff were very good about it, asking if I wanted another main course but in the end I settled on a cold starter (the overly cold crab!) so I could eat at the same time as my companions. Deserts did not particularly inspire and the crispbread that accompanies the cheese was also overly salty. And whilst the front of house team were extremely warm and friendly the service was just too quick at times. I know they want to turn tables (so only allocate 2 hours, no matter how much you plan to spend - ignore the minimum spend line on the website as it means nothing) but starters arriving before getting half way through a first cocktail is just plain wrong (and also foolish, as we had planned to order a bottle of white wine to accompany the starters but gave up on that plan due to their overly speedy arrival). I thought I might have found a hidden gem here but sadly not. Instead, it was just another over priced but decidedly average London restaurant (albeit with good cocktails and nice decor) - shame.

I booked this restaurant for my mum's birthday after reading numerous good reviews - don't listen to them! We had a late table booking (9pm), we arrived and were shown to a very small table where our drinks orders were taken, there were only 5 of us and we all ordered cocktails. We sat down at 9 and our drinks came at 9.30 with no noticed attempt to speed things up. When the cocktails finally arrived, they were fairly average (not sure why they took 30 minutes to make), the strawberry and balsamic vinegar martini tasted of just vinegar and wasn't drunk. When the waiter cleared away the full martini glass, he didn't even acknowledge that it hadn't been drunk and ask if there was anything wrong - bad start It got worse, the starters came eventually, one of which was the wrong order - the tuna was grey and over cooked, the duck was dry and overcooked, the fois gras was not good and the toast was burnt. Again, nothing said when full plates of food were taken away. Main course came at 10.45pm, an hour and 45 minutes after we first sat down, the scallops were chewy and smellt off, the fish was dry and tasteless and the steak was overcooked and gritty - how hard is it to cook a steak!? Only at this point did service step up a notch when desert was attempted to be forced upon us - we declined and swiftly left. The only good thing about the evening was the fact that it was so bad it was funny. Please do not listen to the good reviews - it really is a terrible restaurant with over priced and badly cooked food along with very slow service, it ruined what was meant to be a special occasion. If you want a good night with great food - head elsewhere.

have been to four o nine a few times and have even recommended to friends. Shant be making that mistake again. while the setting is lovely and is also local, the food and service let this place down - key factors in a semi-decent restaurant imho. as a vegetarian my choice is often limited, but I make allowances for that when reviewing. we started with cocktails - "that looks like dishwater" said my boyfriend. it tasted like it too and was sent back. that was met by indifference from the waitress and we continued to be ignored all evening. we had a late table and other people were at the tail-end of their meals, so they were hardly busy.we had to pour our own wine all evening.the tomato soup was ok.we were brought stale raisin bread (at additional charge) after we'd finished our starters.the 1 vegetarian dish on the menu was brown rice wrapped in a savoy cabbage leaf sitting on some bland tomato sauce. the 2 pieces of leaf brought nothing to the party - the rice was unseasoned and and was literally just brown rice. it was the most bizarre dish I've ever eaten. when it arrived, I remembered I had ordered and sent it back last time, my bad - should have learnt my lesson.in their favour, they did take the dish off the bill. my bf's chicken was bland and forgettable. the mini pies he had to start were mini in the extreme but apparently very tasty.I've given this place enough chances and I really do want it to be good. its a shame.

This is my favourite restaurant in the Clapham area by far. It's cozy, non-pretentious and the food is quite frankly delicious with a home-cooked feel to it. It is a little extra on the purse strings but I think it’s pretty good value for money. There are always top table deals too.Next to the Clapham North pub a little door is located with a buzzer. You are let in to climb the stairs which lead to a terrace with a small doorway to the restaurant. You are greeted by a friendly but polite hostess and seen to your table. The restaurant is lovely and light with comfy booths around the sides and smaller tables centrally. There’s a raised bar to the back. Its décor is very neutral with a negative/sepia print of London scenes (very subtly) on the walls and there are flashes of colour with deep plum furniture/accessories. It has a really laid back comfortable feel. They have a set menu which offers 2 courses for 20 quid or 3 for 30 which is really good value with options such as smoked trout benedict to start, Roast Beef for main and rhubarb something for desert. The set menu provides an excellent choice for a good value and the a la carte obviously provides more flexible eating (50% off deal with Top Table I believe). On this visit I had the set menu opting for a main and a desert. For my main I chose the Roast Beef which had the most amazingly flavoured savoy cabbage with it, goose fat potatoes, glazed parsnips and carrots. The beef was cooked slightly pink and it was extremely tender. For my pud, I opted for the selection of sorbet and ice cream – dull you might think but the selection on offer was Coconut and Marshmallow, Blood Orange and Raspberry, Basil and Balsamic vinegar. I must say that the flavours were fantastically balanced for all of them but I especially enjoyed the blood orange sorbet. I don’t think I have ever tasted such a good sorbet. For 3 of us with wine, two courses, the bill came to 150 quid including service. I don’t think that is too bad considering the quality of the food and the ambience. In summary, I want to say go there but then again, I want to be selfish as I don’t want it getting too popular so that I can’t get a reservation any more :-)

This is my 4th visit since it opened and always had very good food and service. The menu prices are a tad too high for the location but Four O Nine is a certainly a good option if you manage to get one of the weekday deals. Staff are very proffessional and friendly. Paintwork could do with a touch up- dont let it slip guys!

Went for dinner on a Saturday night with friends. The entrance is a bit odd and we weren't sure we were in the right place. But once there, it was warm and stylish. Menu wonderful and great wine list. Cheese board was delicious. Best Cosmopolitan I've had in years! Turn left when you leave for a lively drink in the great Cuban bar on the corner.

We enjoyed this semi-formal, intimate and cosy restaurant, with subdued lighting and candle-lit tables. The service was great and friendly, the menu offered variety and the food was good. We ordered pheasant and desserts. The staff were good enough to create an affogatto for me, which was not on the dessert menu, and it was delicious. Probably not a good choice of restaurant if you are vegetarian or if you are not able to manage a few narrow staircases. The meal with wines and liquors was around 45pounds each. I enjoyed my meal and the evening out. It was very relaxing and pleasant.

This restaurant just 'happened' to be up the road from where we were staying. Specialises in game - but also had fish and steak on the menu. The food was delicious, service excellent and very reasonably priced for high quality. Only suggestion would be to have a wider range of wine by the glass - but the wine we had was very good. The entry process was a bit weird - the doorway is actually down the Landor Rd and you have to hit a button to be let in, then walk up stairs to the restaurant which is on the second and third floor. But it works OK.

Very much liked the discreet entrance - added a bit of excitement as it is quite unusual.Food was very good, although they couldn't seem to get the timings right and all my courses were a little cold. Would recommend the venison though!Very attentive service in the restaurant (although when I'd emailed a menu query a few days before I received no reply).Romantic atmosphere, although it felt like there were too many tables in one room and you were very close to the tables next to you and could easily overhear conversations.Would probably go back, but most likely on a week night as I hope it would be a little quieter.

After discovering this place online, I took my girlfriend here for a Valentine's dinner this past year. It was excellent. Atmosphere was great. Service was perfect. Due to the occasion, the menu was limited to certain choices. I don't think there was a bad choice to be made, though. Every dish was incredible. Nice selection of Scotch. Although somewhat pricey, it was nothing to be unexpected given the caliber of the restaurant. I will definitely return!

Attentive, friendly service, interesting menu, food well prepared and well presented. No room for a pudding then have a dessert cocktail! Can't speak too highly of this restaurant. On a par with Trinity in terms of food, and almost as good as Chez Bruce. Definitely should have a higher rating.

When you venture out to eat mid week you're never quite sure of what you are going to get, well, Four o Nine was just perfect. We opted for the November 50% off choice and splashed out on the wine. The service is friendly and we felt well looked after. The seating and spaces between tables is just right, and the music choice is great as well as being unobtrusive. Most importantly the food, good choices on the menu, reasonable gaps between courses, and we did opt for three courses. The food was cooked to perfection, and, the main course was lovely and hot which is a treat! Can't wait to visit it again when I return to Clapham North.

Finding the restaurant is the tricky part its above the Clapham North Pub, you enter via a small door and go up a flight of steps (which are outside and it was raining so i could not put up my golf umbrella!) Once inside it is a cosy and comfortable restaurant with a nice bar and helpful staff. The menu had a variety of dishes with an interesting mixture of flavours, very tasty, but ensure you order extra veg as quantities are "nouveau". The price was a more than expected £60 a head but we had lots of wine, overall everyone was very pleased. The souffle was excellent.

We had heard great things about this place and it lived up to them for the most part. As it was a lovely evening, we phoned in advance and booked onto the "terrace" which sounded lovely but when we arrived, it was really more of a smoking area at the top of the stairs. Thankfully, the waitress was happy for us to move inside. The service really was good. The only other gripe is that we had to ask for the set menu as it wasn't brought over automatically - I'm sure most places do this but I don't think it's good practice. The food was excellent (the anchovy dressing for the salad with the steak was amazing) and the price was pretty good value really (especially with the glass of wine that comes with the set menu).

The ambiance of the place (specially when the sun comes down) is something special. With the candles blowing with the wind, the old style decor... it seemed quite a dramatic (in a positive way) scene. Romantic place. Food nonetheless is fine but not matching the expectations of the setup and the service.

The concept of Four O' Nine is lovely - tucked away behind Clapham North, the entrance is doorbell only, menu looks amazing and the restaurant itself has a nice atmosphere.Service was good and waiters were incredibly friendly. The food just wasn't very good. We had the peach and ricotta starter - it just tasted a bit bland followed by rabbit saddle, my friend had the skirt steak and paprika triple cooked chips to share. Nothing about the main meal stood out except that it needed a lot of salt. What was more disappointing was that the chips weren't really that cooked - let alone triple cooked. I have had a handful of friends that have been and really enjoyed their experience. I think its the perfect restaurant for a date as it is tucked away but i was a bit more interested in having a good meal which was disappointing. On that basis I wouldn't go again but I have had dozens of friends that have really liked everything even the food....

I was looking for somewhere to have afternoon tea without having to trek to central London and four o nine seemed perfect. I agree with other comments that its not easy to find the place, although the address is on Clapham Road, it looks like it's more on Landor road, I think it would be easier if they just state it's part of 'the Clapham North' as its hidden behind it.In terms of the restaurant itself, it's actually a really cute little place with classy decor and a great atmosphere, the service is also excellent. I would say that compared to other places I have been for afternoon tea, the portion sizes are pretty small and the selection for vegetarians wasn't great although they did try to accommodate for this by substituting one of the meat choices. They also served quite generous portions of jam and cream for scones but we were only served one tiny scone each so most if it was wasted (they also served a small selection of small cakes) I don't think the selection was great, they might have been better off serving more/larger scones but I guess they are trying to cater for everyone's likes...I didn't have dinner here but it looks like it would be a great little place to go if you like your meat as I didn't get the impression the have much for vegetarians...

Four O Nine is one of Clapham in London's hidden gems when it comes to gourmet cuisine. And it's literally hidden. The entrance isn't actually in Clapham Road but tucked away behind a closed door and up a stair case in Landor Road opposite Clapham North Tube Station on the Northern Line. If that sounds like a mouthful the warm welcome and elegant decor of the restaurant more than compensates for any misunderstanding with the Sat Nav. We went there as a couple to celebrate our wedding anniversary and felt immediately at home. I'd describe the style of cuisine as modern British with an excellent and reasonable priced wine list. Having subsequently returned for a dinner with two business colleagues, I can say that nothing fails to live up to its description on the menu. And one ethical touch - when I reminded the staff that we'd waited a while for our puddings I was pleasantly surprised that there was no charge for them on the bill. Just desserts for 32 years of marriage.

I took my girlfriend here for her birthday on 22nd February and reserved a table by the window which was done with no problem. It was a week night so the place was less than half full, but the atmosphere was nice - could be a great place for a second or third date as it's quiet, intimate and the restaurant itself could be described as cool and quirky. I imagine that Saturday nights could get loud as the Clapham North pub downstairs gets rowdy but service was excellent and the waiters were very attentive. Strangely, I could only have a half-pint of draft beer (no pint glasses?) but this didn't detract from a delicious trout starter. I checked beforehand that the 2 or 3 course set menu was available but we were simply presented with the a la carte menu on arrival, gave me the impression they want you to spend more .... Anyway, my only one criticism was that our steaks were served cold and rather disappointingly, already sliced. But overall this is a nice place to go to once - for that really special occasion, spend a bit more and go to Trinity in Clapham Old Town or Chez Bruce on Wandsworth Common.

We booked into 409 for New Year's Eve and more recently. It is a sort of secret place, dimly lit and a good eerie. Was a bit miffed about the fact they couldn't find our booking and consequently felt a little bit rushed/squeezed in. The food is rather good but perhaps they take it one step too far in terms of trying to be clever with the flavours - my partner's duck sauce tasted of cookie dough. Defnitely worth a trip - bit romantic in terms of setting - so might not suit everybody.

We have been to Four O Nine several times ourselves, but this time we took some friends from out of London for a Monday night dinner. The staff were as friendly and welcoming as ever, and although it was fairly quiet on a Monday, there was still bucket loads of atmosphere with the candles and music creating a relaxing mood. For starter I had a mozzarella salad with a twist, with a fantastic savoury coulis; we also tried an absolutely stunning pickled mackerel dish. For main course the onglet steak (which we all ordered) was cooked to perfection, while the triple-cooked chips were crispy and tasty. For dessert, chocolate brownie was warm and moist in the middle, while green apple sorpet was simply an explosion of flavours. We left considering how lucky we were to have this as a local! We'll be back again and again I imagine!

Went there on Friday night for a relaxed bit to eat. We were unfortunately held up so were slightly late for our booking. The staff were totally relaxed and accomodated us with no issue. We were gutted though on arrival as I wish we'd been early for our table to have a cocktail at the bar ( I won't make that mistake again! They looked great). We went on a Friday night, the atmosphere was really buzzy but at the same time the lighting and room set up make for a really cosy and initimate experience (not necessarily romantic so don't be put off if you're on a date, or are just friends!). The food was fresh, tasty, seasonal and I loved it. The service was really attentive without being intrusive. The staff are a bit part of the atmosphere and vibe. As someone who eats out a lot, I can say I have never booked a table for my next visit before leaving on the first visit! A first for me. Love this place and it's going to be saved for special occassions (regularly!) going forward.

My husband and I decided to give Four o Nine a try to celebrate our 24th wedding anniversary and although the food delivered, it certainly wasn't the place for whispering sweet nothings - although I guess you could gaze into each other's eyes adoringly as you coped with the noise. This is not a negative review - we were very pleased with the food and service, but if we'd read it had the potential to be noisy, we wouldn't have booked it for this specific occasion. I would go back, but with a group of friends - or maybe if you go midweek, the noise levels are not so bad? Or am I just being a grumpy old woman? They serve delicious cocktails and are good at knowing just when you might need more water/wine etc. My starter of stuffed squid was a little on the small side, but the main course of Tapenade encrusted Hake was excellent, along with the 2 side dishes we ordered. When one of the waiters could see we were having problems with the noise, he did try his best to get the pub downstairs to turn down the volume and was very charming. Bearing in mind the length of our marriage, perhaps it was a bonus that we couldn't talk too much! Do give Four o Nine a try and if you're into Gin, the Gin Garden cocktail is fab.

We stumbled upon Sintra, which looked interesting and were made welcome. The service was excellent, they made us feel very at home. The food was excellent, and different to usual offerings from steakhouses, ethnic and hipster restaurants. Portuguese, with plenty of fish, but also various meat and veggie stuff. We all loved it.
