Having not been at the Foston's Ash for probably 20 years we visited for lunch and were not disappointed. The food was excellent (mains were burger, sole and lamb) and service was efficient and friendly. Will try not to wait 20 years until the next visit!

The best things happen unplanned! We have visited The Foston’s Ash in Birdlip by coincidence. Not only we have met a friend from the past here but also had an amazing lunch in beautiful setting. The food was delicious and flavoursome cooked to perfection, the staff is very friendly, helpful and professional. The courtyard garden is just beautiful. You can also stay in their new shepherds huts! We will definitely be back!

Met friends over the Christmas break here, we wished to try it after reopening, sadly it disappointed. I had a burger, coleslaw and fries, the burger was incredibly fatty that it was oozing fat when cut in half, my plate was partially swimming in fat and subsequently the brioche roll went soggy & fell apart! There was no checking on how food was mid meal, clearing plates or when bill arrived as would of expressed concerns. For the price and competition in the area (I'm local) it is not somewhere I'd go again or recommend as there are far superior offerings for similar prices

Went for lunch with son and granddaughter. Staff unaware of drinks available and were unable to answer queries about the menu. My husband ordered steak which was very grisly and tough. My granddaughter and I ordered a pork burger which amounted to two thin slices of leftover pork which on inspection was 90% cold fat. Overly heavy on coleslaw and pretty much inedible. Won’t be returning.

Really pleased this pub has reopened- very cosy with a real fire and good food. I had the burger which was cooked perfectly and properly stacked with the goodies and nice hint of spice to the burger. Great fries and I had the orange/chocolate gingerbread trifle for pudding which was delicious as well very yummy indeed. One of our group had the cod which was delicious too and obviously all cooked with passion. Some great walks nearby too and it was nice that the pub is dog friendly as well with some great local ales on tap too. Very friendly staff highly recommend. Good value for fresh top class ingredients.

We met friends for lunch at the pub on Saturday and were unable to park upon arrival. Once inside the pub was almost empty and very cold. We chose this pub as it gave the impression of quality food and were most disappointed to be told that all the options were unavailable except for Burger and chips or Fish and chips. Apparently their hob was broken, but had they phoned us before-hand we could have made alternative arrangements to meet elsewhere as we had travelled a long way. Once the food came it had gone cold before we were half way through. Felt embarrassed that the occasion was so dreadful as we had made the arrangements. Didn't bother with a desert and our friends had a coffee to help warm up a bit before we left.

A little disappointed with this place. Beautiful pub and setting. However, ordered the chicken roast, as did some others on our table, and it was largley inedible. The chicken was tough and clearly cooked too quickly or not rested properly. Others on our table had raw chicken. Some money way taken off begrudgingly but the experience was uncomfortable. If customer service would have been better after we complained, I might have given this place another shot. I won't bother now.

Went here for a family Sunday roast. Booked meal online and arrived in good time to be seated. Good job we did as nobody made eye contact, so our family group was left waiting around like idiots. Eventually seated we all ordered our roasts. They all came except one of us which was about 5 minutes later! We wanted mustard and horseradish. Had to wait another 5 to 10 minutes whilst we could get someone’s attention! Even then getting these sauces was a struggle. The chicken was good if sadly a tiny portion. I had a gluten free option and I didn’t get a pig in blanket or Yorkshire pudding, and they were so stingy I didn’t even get an extra roast potato!! I still had to pay the same though. We had no carrots served, because they forgot them! Finally they charged us for 8 people instead of 6! Careless and awful service. We shall never return. Even the manager glared at us as we left! I had dinner here on Sunday evening. Lovely place inside, food ok but our meal was ruined by being rushed. On the wensite it states they are open for food and drink until 11pm. When we had only just started our main course at about 8 a staff member came and asked if we could order any tea or coffees then because the machine was bring turned off and cleaned (haven’t they heard of a kettle???). We reluctantly did so, but by the time we drank them they were tepid. We weren’t offered a dessert menu and when our mains were cleared it felt like they were rushing to get rid of us. They told us they closed at 10. They also do that irritating thing of serving meals on boards and tiles. I had burger and fries and the food kept falling off the tile onto the table. It’s a ridiculous trendy idea that is so impractical. Bring back decent sized plates to give a proper surface to eat off. The service felt rushed and very rude. We will not return. Guests want to dine at their own convenience, thats what we pay for, not at the convenience of cleaning thd kitchen.

Great pub and incredibly accommodating. We came to spend the weekend from Hastings and arrived on Friday very late. While this was not the first pub we contacted to try to get a table, they were the only ones that were kind enough to keep the kitchen open until our arrival. On the Friday (our first visit) we were greeted by the wonderful bar staff. Friendly is an understatement, they are amazing!! They brought us immediately some water to drink and were very happy to talk about the specials. They even brought my dog a jar full of biscuits (this is when they won over my heart). We loved it so much that we decided to go back the next day. We had a great server, Amy, who was so nice and treated us like royalty!! Food was insanely good and the Chimichurri sauce was spot on!! We booked a table and glad we did as it seems popular. The food was great, we both really enjoyed our meal. (A personal preference for next time I think I’ll have no horseradish mayo in my burger as it spoilt the taste) but I still really enjoyed it. Very well presented food and plenty of it. The pub itself is what I would describe as a traditional country pub, I loved it. My only wish is that the log burners were lit. That would have made the evening even better. I’ve not eaten or visited Fostons Ash (The Polo Club) since my fateful meal in July of 2021.I was today served an inedible mushroom and it prompted me to recall my fateful evening at FA. Still incredulous at the dismissive service but any food establishment that serves you a steak that was basically a lump of fat and then tells you they’ve had a bad batch of meat ‍♀️ which accounted for an awful meal. It was pointed out how the chef (probably left by now) could plate up the meal in the first place is beyond me. I’m not one to complain and explained to an uninterested waitress who had taken the lump of grizzle away it had nothing to do with the bill but just interested to hear from the chef or manager what they thought. Surprisingly neither were in the building and I was accused of actually eating most of the meal by a very weird sub manager. Anyway suffice to say I wouldn’t enter this establishment again if they paid me. Very disingenuous and astonishingly poor although the dog did enjoy his first pub meal experience.

Last Sunday we visited Foston's Ash for a Sunday lunch. I had booked a table in the bar, but on arrival we were greeted by a man who suggested we eat in the tent as it would be warmer. Rather reluctantly we agreed. The atmosphere was miserable and the tent cold. The heater near where we sat was not working properly so we moved nearer to another heater, but it still remained cold. A friend saw us and mentioned that it was very busy in the bar which made us think that we had been directed into the tent to ease pressure in the bar. Our food arrived warm but quickly cooled in the cold air. Everything was on the plate with no side dish of vegetables. We should have expressed our dis-satisfaction at that point and left but we were hungry so started our meal. Half way through our meal we gave up. I told the waitress that the whole experience was awful, paid for what we had been served and left. The whole experience was dreadful.

We booked the barn area at the back of the marquee for a birthday celebration and couldn't have had a better evening. From the time of booking all the way through to the end of the evening the staff were extremely attentive and friendly, they couldn't do enough to ensure our night was perfect. As we arrived we were met by a member of staff and shown into the bar to hear drinks before making our way to the barn, where staff had taken time to decorate it with bunting and ensured it was warm and cosy. We were a little worried that we might be forgotten about, due to the fact we were not in the main eating area, but this couldn't have been further from the truth as we were constantly looked after by a young waitress and the manager, both couldn't have done any more to make the night perfect (thank you both). The food was delicious, as always, and everyone meals arrived at the same time which may sound obvious but we were a large group so I'm sure it wasn't easy. Booked the private area for my birthday which apparently wasn’t noted on the booking. They tried putting us in the barn at the of the marquee which would have been lovely in the Summer but is clearly unused during the Winter so was dark and cold and completely unprepared. We were then put in the private area for about 5 minutes before being told it had been booked by someone else so were moved and squeezed into the bar which had a very noisy private function. The young lady serving and only on her second shift was extremely pleasant and helpful but the Manager of the evening (14th) was not helpful at all and was overheard saying ‘they’ll be lucky to get in as we’re fully booked’! We decided to leave because of this and had an amazing meal and service in the Butchers Arms down the road. We won’t be returning.

We needed a local pub to hold my Dads wake (and this was one of his favourites to visit with my sister) - from my original email query through to the day itself - I can find no fault with the whole crew at the Foston's Ash - the food laid on was perfect and Amy was beyond helpful as well. On what was a very emotional day it was so relaxing and comforting here that it made the end of the day a lot easier. Hope to be back as soon as possible for a Sunday lunch and a few pints of the local ale.

Finding somewhere to eat on a Sunday evening was proving quite challenge but thankfully we stopped here.Great welcome, good (really good) beer and fantastic food, what not to like? The quinoa salad looked amazing and the burger was delicious. The service was attentive, friendly but not at all overbearing. I hope this place does really well.

We were having a 60th birthday and 40th wedding anniversary party in Sheepscombe and our anxiety dream came true when the caterers forgot us and we had no food. Two brief phone conversations with Nick and we had 40 takeaway meals ready for us in less than an hour and a half. Burgers, fish and chips and chicken Caesar salads. Amazing to turn this round so quickly and the quality of teh food was outstanding. All we can say is what a fantastic response, obviously not an everyday occurrence but the Fostons Ash did not seem phased at all. Brilliant, you really did save our bacon. We will get to you soon for a Friday night supper. Thanks from Tim & Jane x

We had the most excellent meal there last night. The menu was comprehensive - both food and drink - and did not disappoint. Three of us had steaks (it was steak night) which were cooked exactly as we wanted, while the lentil burger was also very nice. The accompanying wine was excellent and not too badly priced. Service was attentive, cheerful and not overbearing. A real find.

Oh dear, this restaurant fell well below our expectations. We looked for somewhere above average for dinner and, from their website, the Fostons Ash looked good. The car park was packed and it was difficult to find a place to park.We had to stand and wait longer than reasonable to be shown to our pre-booked table. Drinks and food orders were taken promptly, however the menu only partially matched that shown on the website. It took three quarters of an hour before starters arrived but the main course followed in a reasonable period.I ordered a sirloin steak, thinking that for £19 it would be of good quality. What a mistake. It was probably the worst steak I have ever been served. I doubt it was even a sirloin. Essentially it was fat and gristle with bits of meat stuck to it. Several other people also complained.Other meals were somewhat mediocre and certainly overpriced. The cost of my “meal” was taken off the bill but this did not compensate for the ruin of our evening. We were disappointed.

We came here for dinner as a family group including children and grandparents. We were the only family there, now I know why. We waited 30 minutes just to get a drink. Then an unbelievable 1 hour, 45 minutes to get some food, arriving at 7pm and eating at 8.45pm. Despite many pleas to the staff and very restless kids, we were not prioritised. It was not even busy 15 tables - about a quarter full mid week. We were sat on a table next to the car park, instead of the garden as we were told it would take longer to serve if we went to the garden. However we saw lots of food making its way to the garden area. We were thoroughly hungry and bored, and an apology (finally, after threatening to leave) from the manager didn't help at all. We were not offered any nibbles/ olives etc to keep us going while we waited almost 2 hours, and no discount off our food, no free dessert. Unbelievably poor service. Waiting staff seemed to be doing their best but management just out to take your money.Very limited menu - out of 6 items, we were told 2 were unavailable (fish). Most of us were forced to have the burger which was horribly salty with a strange sauce and not worth £15.Drinks very expensive here too, especially soft drinks. Soda with a dash of lime was £1.30 (double the price of a nearby pub). Coca cola £2.80! If we had been told of major food delays, we wouldn't have booked. Do yourself a favour and visit the Golden Heart pub in Birdlip round the corner - fantastic varied food, beautiful garden good value, and fast, friendly service.

Excellent experience for our 40th wedding anniversary. We stopped for lunch after travelling to Cotswolds from Scotland. As we weren't sure of travelling time we were actually an hour early but staff accommodated us although place was busy. The roast beef was superb and served with a large selection of fresh vegetables. We also had pudding which we enjoyed. The serving staff were all friendly and welcoming. Its just a pity we live so far away or would be returning regularly here.

Last Sunday I took my family to the Foston's Ash to celebrate my wife's birthday. It rained and rained and rained and thanks to the staff at the Foston's we simply did not care. Despite being busy the service was superb and even found us a private dining space to make the meal that little more special.Food was from a broad menu, made from good quality ingredients and well cooked. It also arrived hot which given the weather was no mean feat! So thanks again to the staff for making the day very special indeed.

We had booked a table, so when weArrived we were promptly sat to a table. We have been here a couple of times, and yes enjoyed the roast dinner.Today- We ordered a coke, and a pint of soda water and then half a soda water, the waitress arrived with a 200ml small bottle of coke ( on the menu it read a 330ml of coke at £2:30) So we spoke to the waitress who informed us the coke from the pump was a lot cheaper as it wasn’t coke, it was Coke Zero or Diet Coke!?But regardless of that issue we were not going to pay £2:30 for a coke that stated it was a 330ml and was only a 200ml!! And yes the waitress said she wouldn’t charge for it- but the best is to come.Soda water that comes from a pump - plain water with bubbles-£2 for a half a pint!!! We had a pint and a half of soda water and it cost £6!!! The most we’ve been charged for soda water is 50p but £2??? For half a pint! The best is you haven’t even got a soda water charge on you’re menu- Blenheim palace sparkling water is £3:25, that would’ve been cheaper, so why charge that amount on water with bubbles from the pump? The roast dinner, we have had a couple of times, and never had much of a problem, but today l had to eat it as quick as l could because the vegetables were warm/cold! The waitress came to us just as we started to eat and asked if everything was ok, we had barely started to eat, so naturally we said we are ok. From that point onward we saw no waitress to ask, or say was everything ok! So we made do and ate our roast dinner. And as for the burger, hardly appetisingly smothered in so much horseradish you couldn’t taste the burger!! So, to end our review, you’re drink prices need to be addressed- £6!! For a pint and a half of soda water (really)It’s a shame as l don’t like leaving bad reviews and always feel we should give a place a chance- or just not return states enough, but l actually want to leave a review to warn people about the costs of drinks, please check the prices before you order! Because l feel this place can change a drink price when they want. - a month ago we had 2 pints of soda water and were charged £1:80 per pint, so how has it gone from £1:80 a pint to £2.00 for half a pint???To finish this of, we won’t be returning, Hopefully this review will help other people keep an eye on the bill at the end.

We went there for my elderly mothers birthday just after they reopened after lock down. We ordered drinks and food and waited and waited and waited. After 45 minutes we asked if our food was on the way. We were tole we were next, another 15 minutes nothing had arrived we asked again. This time we were told it was next on the on the pass. Another 15 minutes and the food finally arrived two steaks ordered medium rare were raw, the duck was tough and the veg looked as if a couple of bits had been grabbed off another plate. When we we tried to politely explain what had happened to the man who appeared to be the owner, he snapped at us "not to lecture" him. He said he had only "just arrived" when he had been chatting to the next table for 20 minutes. The steaks were sent back and appeared again cooked correctly nearly and hour and a half after we had ordered it. The ice cream for pudding was grainy suggesting it had not been stored correctly, by then we we were beyond complaining. In the end they did not charge for the steaks so 2 stars for the refund but otherwise avoid until they get their act together.

Having previously failed to secure a table for dinner due of the popularity of this venue, we booked online (a helpful way to secure a table) and returned two days later. The room was full and there is clearly an appreciative regular local clientele. The menu is comprehensive and caters well for vegan and vegetarian requirements. We enjoyed a high quality meal, attractively presented with good sized portions which combined with friendly and attentive service. Although our food may have taken somewhat longer to appear than we expected, the wait was amply rewarded and the friendly atmosphere plus fair pricing made for a very relaxing evening.Well worth a detour, but be sure to book in advance .

It was not until we got back to the camp site that we discovered the cost was £28.00 for the two, however we did get a small pot of mushy peas that I was able to drink, the food itself was also not that good either so won’t be returning.

My wife an I had lunch here recently which was excellent, however I was horrified by the price of the soft drinks. A diet coke was £2.80/330ml which is £4.82/pint. That makes it more expensive than every draft and bottled beer, larger and cider they sell. Also, full sugar coke is 70p/pint cheaper that diet, which is just wrong in multiple levels...

I booked the cabin for our son’s 21st birthday. From start to finish the staff were very attentive and friendly, despite it being a busy Friday evening and adhering to covid restrictions which were all in place. The atmosphere was buzzing and we felt like we were on holiday and not just five miles away from home! The food was delicious and unlike some places the menu was really varied and we were spoilt for choice. The service was great. It was the best decision to try and make the best if a family celebration to mark this special occasion as sadly we couldn’t have the big party that had been intended. I am looking forward to returning again soon for lunch with some friends.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We have been been frequenting the Fostons for many years now and have really loved the transition since British Polo Gin took over the reigns. We have had many enjoyable meals there and whilst sometimes there has been some gaps in the service or mistakes made, they have always handled it with professionalism and care. Today we had a table for 3 booked for lunch. The new marquee is a great space but we were sat next to the music. The music was not at all uplifting, in fact the opposite and I would advise investing in a better sound system. The service was OK but the overall impression was that the restaurant lacked overall coordination. During the meal, no one checked in on us to see if everything was ok. We all ordered asparagus and were each served a plate that contained three halves of asparagus - £7.50 per person - a total one 1/12 asparagus each. The asparagus was served cold with little seasoning or oil, however the basil pesto was delicious. We were quite put out by this as it just seemed a blatant excuse to serve a paltry portion due to the nature of the product. Not being able to get the attention of the manager we let it go and decided to say something at the end. The rest of the meal was fine, roast beef was good but lacking some flavour and the vegetables were al al al dente. At the end we asked the manager twice for the bill and then when it materialised explained our issue with the starters. The response we received was really unsatisfactory and we were told nobody else has complained. I thought this lacked integrity and made us as customers feel really uncomfortable. The dishes were deducted from the bill - which was really appreciated - but another few comments left us feeling chastised. I work in the industry and know it is important to give and take that feedback respectfully. I also know that the kitchen is under pressure to make a certain GP from each dish but I think on this occasion, it was borderline mean. We have an Airbnb locally and always recommend guests to book but sadly after today this won't be the case. We drove away feeling rather flat as were so looking forward to coming back after lockdown. We appreciate restaurants have their busy days and that operating in these circumatances is challenging. We also appreciate how much effort has been put in to creating a lovely space outside but how you respond to your customers is important. We appreciate the charges being removed from the bill but some acknowledgement that the portion size would be discussed with the kitchen would have been a better approach.

Our family of three decided to return to the Fostons Ash having enjoyed our previous visits. Sunday lunch table booked at 1445 the week before. We arrived five minutes early to be ignored by various staff avoiding eye contact. Eventually one member of staff said I will be with in a moment. She took our name looked confused as if we weren’t expected and then ushered us a dirty patio table with two chairs that was more a casual table for drop in drinkers. A third chair arrived and we sat. Tables then became free but having asked to move we were told they were booked! So had we! After 20 mins of being ignored we asked for some drinks. A chap with coloured hair told us we could not have anything to eat or drink as they were too busy. We told him we had booked he was surprised and he took our drinks order. It arrived but as Birra moretti was now unavailable they substituted it for another without asking! Again the game of catch the attention to ask for menus. Finally after 55mins of being ignored and forgotten about we had had enough I asked for the manager. Imagine my surprise to find there was no manager on site so a young lady came to the table to say she was in charge. It was clear we had not been placed in anyone’s “section” and we had indeed been overlooked, at this we left.I know it was busy, perhaps they had over stretched themselves to make hay while sun shone and over sold the place. I asked that she feed this appalling service to the management to at least ensure lessons were learnt.Surprised at the over all lack of basic training in customer service as this customer’s experience was woeful.

Thank you for your continued efforts in providing a safe space, despite the obvious challenges this brings. We can’t wait to come back and finish working our way through the menu - the roast and the burger are our top recommendations so far!
