Nice traditional pub with a smashing selection of cask ales. Decent events from live music to comedy. A nice break from the chaotic Dog and Duck and crowded Mannamead. Definitely the best pub on Mutley.

Not to sure on the whole food thing but I do believe that you can have Nibley bits there but you can take food in. The pub is very busy at times staff are great and the punter

Google asked me to update my review from years ago, my opinion hasn't changed - This place is everything a proper British community pub should be. A wide range of real ales, friendly staff and locals. What's not to love?

Great real ale and cider pub. There is always a good selection of drinks, whether pale or dark is your thing. For those of us with allergies or the designated driver, there are a selection of bottles and cans as well. No food, but you can bring your own, and there are plenty of takeaways in the area. Staff are friendly and helpful, and the atmosphere is always welcoming. Probably the best pub in the city.

Great, well-managed traditional pub on Mutley Plain, serving the best cask ales in town, as well a good selection of spirits. The Fort/Scue has a great atmosphere, always, and excellent staff. Live music most weekends, on Ground Floor level and/or in the Basement, including the monthly Weirdos Disco (Punk, Goth, etc). Best pub in town, for me.

Just what a pub used to be,serving beer and people having conversations without the loud drone of sports echoing in your ears. Obviously Saturday nights , when the students are in, is not the same however we were all young once!

What a great pub! The atmosphere feels very authentic and the Ale is excellent with a huge variety! I was served by a member Staff called Valeria and the service was really professional with amazing advice on the choice of Ales.

Not bad in here, but it can get very noisy, just like Whetherspoons , in fact all pubs around here are all same, but that's where the money is, to make sure that their pubs are noisy, to attract, well, noisy people.

Came for the drinks, stayed for the service. If you could employ a Keelan in every pub in Plymouth, or the UK, I’d be a happy punter. Excellent service, utterly top tier. Can’t sing his praises enough, made the night for me. Will be returning for the atmosphere and the staff purely because of him. Wonderful evening. 10/10.

Been coming to Fort, on and off, ever since I first moved to Plymouth in 2001. There's just nowhere like it. It feels like a home from home. There's always a great range of ale on offer, which is perfectly kept. The staff are fabulous - always friendly and welcoming. My wife and I look forward to visiting more often when the kids can shift for themselves at home!

An ale oasis for the real ale lover. If I owned enough hair this would be my preferred venue to let it down. Friendly, helpful staff provide a genuine feeling of a heart felt welcome. With the added attractions of live music, pub games and the finest quiz in Devon. The Fortescue is a joy for the local or thirsty visitors wanting an enjoyable time . Oh and did I mention the roast dinner on Sunday.

Had a very pleasant few hours here on a Friday night. Had no trouble being served. Beer was so good we stayed longer than planned. There was no trouble getting a seat, but it was quite full. Friendly atmosphere and staff. There was a DJ playing in a room downstairs. Toilets were downstairs, too. Would definitely go again.

A pub constantly changing their beers and keeping things fresh. Nothing pretentious or over bearing. A proper friendly pub with plenty going on. I do miss the roasts with the Spingo gravy though (I know they’ve been gone a few years though).

Fantastic, proper immaculate pub, where conversation is key and possible, where mobile phones are seldom seen, (at least in the day time hours). In the evenings it becomes a hive of activity with enough variety of entertainment over 7 nights to suit everyone young and not so young. This pub seems to be where the old world meets the new, it comes complete with helpful lovely staff who are happy to advise on the vast range of ales etc stocked in this establishment.

What an amazing night we had on New Year's Eve 🎉 Such a fantastic atmosphere in the pub with so many people up dancing to the fantastic band, Black Light Blue. The service provided by Claire and her staff was first class. What a buzz 😀

The fort or the winchester as some of us call it is a great put.

Traveled further than intended due to all Crownhill/Eggbuckland pubs closing at 22:00 but was rewarded, as always, by the Fortescue and a great pint of Hanlon's stout. Thank you Fortescue for rescuing what was looking like a disastrous evening.

Always a good night out, good draught, great music, Sarah deserves special mentions for being a legend behind the bar.

Always rate this pub, a CAMRA pub which is 1st class. Didn't eat so can't rate that. Always a pleasure regardless

Chosen as a fairly central location in Plymouth for an old boys get together. Just a great venue... what I'd call mature drinkers bar, relaxed environment and eclectic mix of people. Although I drank little, the overall verdict on the choice and quality of beers was, "Brilliant!"

Great local boozer with fantastic choice of ales and ciders. Sometimes have bands playing downstairs but this place is known for its welcoming friendly atmosphere.

Been going to poker here for a while and enjoy each night. Si the TD is always fair and lets people late reg if they miss the game start at 7.30pm plus there is space available (sometimes it is really busy and all tables full). I would recommend all to come along and have a fun night out.

The service is superb and the atmosphere as a traditional pub, is fantastic. Real ales, great lagers and the staff are great characters.

Went to this pub on Wednesday evening about 7.20pm to ask about their poker evening. Was told it starts at 8pm. Popped back in at 7.50pm and was then told it started at 7.30pm. All very odd and had to bite my tongue as I was quite annoyed at being messed about. I also had a mate who went a few weeks prior and told me it was 7.30pm start with 8pm the cutoff for last buy ins. Felt to me like they weren't being transparent about what was really happening. Either way, I do not appreciate being messed about like that. That was the first time I stepped in the pub, and most certainly the last too. Very disappointing experience.

An atmospheric and genuinely local pub with excellent selection of ales. Recently hired the function room for a birthday and staff were friendly, helpful and efficient, contributing significantly to the success of the event. A pub well worth a visit.

Great, proper pub. Very busy and staff were, perhaps consequently, less welcoming than usual. As ever, an excellent selection of ales, although tending, as is the modern trend, towards the lighter, hoppier varieties. Missing something akin to proper bitter like Bass, or Jail, I opted for Guinness, which was fine.
