Really enjoyed our delicious Sunday lunch. We even got extra Yorkshire puds on the house. Food was generous and very tasty. Highly recommended. Just read the other reviews and I've got to say the reviewers are either unlucky or posted neg on purpose. The staff couldn't be more accommodating. Give it a go.

A very mediocre meal, halloumi burger £17.95 with a £3 fried egg ? A chicken burger £17.95 ( a plain chicken breast in a bun ) nice chips and salad, Amstel £6 a pint, a long wait even though we were one of two tables eating on a Friday night, very expensive, disappointing as we have eaten here lots over the years and it’s local, seems to be going for drinkers more than food even though there were only a handful of people in there. We went up the road for a drink and could hardly find a table as it was rammed.

6 of us there for a birthday lunch. I ordered the Fisherman’s Platter. Waitress said sorry, no platters of any kind available. They are in the process of changing their menu so some things are no longer available. We all tried to order a main course but time & time again were told not available. Even the dishes on the blackboard were restricted. We eventually managed to find something but it would have been more efficient to have given us a small page which gave an accurate menu. My fish chips & peas were fine, chunky firm white cod, fat chips, plenty of them. The rest of our party did not fare so well, extra small portions and or burnt vegetables. The dessert menu was greatly reduced to only two options. We decided to go elsewhere. I did feel sorry for our waitress, it was not her fault. We won’t return.

Flying fish needs to update their name because we went there expecting to eat fish but we were later informed there’s no fish after we already ordered drinks. Workers gave us a blank face when we entered. Like, do we need to seat ourselves? Or do we need to be seated? We paid for our drinks and left and looked for the “fish that flew” somewhere else. What a waste of time and money!!!

This so called pub has to be the worst place we have ever visited. We waited well over an hour for our very expensive AVERAGE meal. The young staff are useless and they only employ ONE chef on a Sunday. The whole experience was a complete joke do you self a favour and do not give them any business as they do not deserve it. £11.50 for a jacket potato and cheese come on. The kids were starving waiting so long and got just 4 chicken nuggets each and 8 chips. Never again !

Really not great! Pub is dirty and needs some serious attention (even cleaning would help). Lots of staff but no evidence of any training to carry out their role. Don't really know where to start but imagine walking into The Slaughtered Lamb. At least four floor staff but another customer had to go and find someone to assist us. Could be an amazing venue and judging from some of the pics online did look nice and was clean at some point. Staff were responsive but not proactive. Dumping everything at the end of the table is not acceptable. The only reason I gave two 'stars' was that the food was ok and staff amiable. If this is No.2 in Newhaven, god help the ones behind it.

We’ve been to The Flying Fish in Denton several times in the past and always enjoyed it, but unfortunately, this last visit was a bit disappointing. We ordered lentil soup, two mushroom soups, seasoned vegetables, and a fish pie. After waiting for 50 minutes, we had to ask where our food was, and while it arrived shortly after, one of the mushroom soups was missing. It took another 15 minutes for the missing soup to come out, which meant we had waited over an hour in total, it seems like perhaps they went to the local supermarket to do a shop when they got our order. The long wait really put us off, especially as we’ve had better experiences here before. To add to it, when we requested containers to take some of the food away, the containers were dripping wet, and the napkins we used to wipe them down came away dirty. We understand that things can sometimes go wrong, but this experience has left us hesitant to return, which is a shame given how much we’ve liked it in the past.

We were just wanting fish & chips. Sadly, they said they didn't have any fish available... or any of the tea's they had on their menu. I guess the fish flew away since there was no fish available. Suits the name lol. The service was not very good, as they looked a little lost when we walked in. But at least they let us cancel our order of chicken curry 😅 Time to find the fish elsewhere, maybe they landed in a different kitchen.

Tea was absolutely disgusting and not drinkable, that smell and taste…. brrrr…. We left very disappointed.

Two couples , walked out whilst we were dining. They had run out of food, which they wanted to order, and said that they hadn’t had a delivery today! When our meals arrived, the Scampi was slightly burnt! How hard is it to cook, scampi from frozen? A shame, the waiter/ barman tried his best!

Sorry, Flying Fish, we were not very impressed. We and another couple booked lunch at the pub yesterday because it has historical family significance for me. My mother and her little sister lived there as children with the Eager family in the early 1900s after their mother died, when it was a thriving community pub. Unfortunately our first impressions weren’t great, only one other customer in the pub itself at 1.15 on a Friday lunchtime and apparently someone in the garden had asked for a refund. Realising we had overheard this, the girl behind the bar - who was very polite and also doubled as the only waitress - said it was because the pub had run out of what they wanted to order. (But why had they already paid, unless it was a deposit?) OK fair enough, but then she warned us that there would be a long wait for food as they had been very busy and only had one chef on. We accepted this and sat down in the small restaurant area, (nobody else there) though with hindsight I think both she and the young man who had been behind the bar when we arrived might have preferred us not to stay. By then there was nobody else in the pub, and as far as we could see, only two people in the garden. We were feeling slightly apprehensive! It then took a good 15 minutes from ordering to be told by the very apologetic waitress that the steak and kidney pudding two of us had ordered from the main menu was unavailable. Again, perhaps this was our cue to leave, but by now we were pretty hungry so they ordered fish and chips instead. The young man who had been behind the bar when we arrived had picked up an apron and disappeared into the kitchen area, evidently as doubling as chef. What seemed like a long time later, (about an hour after we had first arrived) our meals arrived. Not the best cod and chips (& one scampi and chips) we had eaten but not the worst, and large portions. We had one drink each including two soft drinks. However later that evening both my partner and I had upset stomachs and he is still suffering this morning. We can’t be 100% sure it was from the pub food, but we hadn’t eaten much else, he had just had toast for breakfast and I had also had some cake. We haven’t spoken to our companions yet to see if they were ok. My partner was the only one of us who used the toilets and said they were clean and modern. We think the pub is under fairly new management, and there seemed to be both a staff shortage and food supply problems. We felt a bit sorry for the two young people in charge, especially the girl, who was doing her best. We didn’t mind the long wait for food as we were happy to chat, but considering we were the only people in the pub I hate to think how they would have coped had it been busy. We noticed that the Flying Fish, which I’m sure used to be a Free House, now has a Shepherd Neame sign outside it. It is a very old building which retains some of its quirky atmosphere and an attempt has been made to modernise it without destroying its character, but it clearly needs more investment in both staff and supplies. Reading previous reviews, it seems they quite often run out of items shown on the main menu, which looks appetising on the face of it but is possibly a bit ambitious for a small pub which is somewhat hidden away. It could be lovely so let’s hope it improves.

Oh dear what can I say. I really don’t like leaving bad reviews but I have no option on this occasion. On entering the pub it looked as though it hadn’t been cleaned from the night before. The tables, floor, bar, doors and walls are disgusting. The glasses are misty where they haven’t been cleaned properly. The garden is uncared for over grown in areas with junk scattered around. The cutlery was disgusting I had to use my serviette to clean them and the dirt that came off was just horrendous. After ordering just a ham and mustard sandwich I was told no bread it would have to be a baguette which I thought oh well ok. The baguette was hard ham was dry the crisp that can with it were either cheap or stale and the salad looked as tho it had been rescued from someone else’s plate and put onto mine. My friends pie mash and veg looked of the jug of gravy was that thick it sat like a large lump of jelly on top. Today they have a bad stomach and this is all we can put it down to. So sorry guys you need to up your game before your closed down and out of business.

So disappointed in what looked like a really decent place for food, they didn’t have half the menu (the classic pub food too) which left little to choose from, the food we did eventually order after the waitress coming back 3 times to tell us what we had ordered they didn’t have, was awful and didn’t eat it, a simple garlic break looked like it had been cooked for an hour, there wasn’t even a salt shaker that worked in the whole place. The only good thing was the Guinness. Sorry to write a bad review but the everything needs to be tightened up here. From a catering person myself.

I have stoped there before going to Brighton. The idea was to try some local food and maybe save some money. What a disaster! It was an absolutely filthy place. The glasses that they serve the drinks in had DNA from 30 other people on them. My wife had wine in her glass and you could see lipstick from a previous customer. The food was £16 for a fish and chips, or should I say half a fish portion in a small dish was overpriced and soaked in oil. We paid £50 for 2 people in that place. It was a total waste of money. I should have gone to Brighton.

Having been a resident in this area for many years I have seen the "Fish" have fluctuating fortunes, the current incumbents have only been running the pub for a few months although the manager has the benefit of longer service behind the bar. They are both qualified chef's and not new to the trade. The food is exceptionally good, there might be a wait for the meal but I would rather have fresh, beautifully cooked food than immediate plateful of microwaved frozen offerings. I am a very able cook myself so am often very critical of other's catering. Staff are helpful, friendly and welcoming to two legged as well as four legged visitors.

I regularly eat on a Sunday lunch time, in my opinion the service has been impeccable, friendly, obliging and welcoming. There is sometimes a wait for my meal but I understand that when everything is freshly cooked to high standard I cannot expect the fast service of McDonald's or KFC and similar outlets. I have enjoyed every meal, I have felt that I would rather have a few idiosyncrasies which are inherent in a pub, it is not a posh restaurant but a venue which provides excellent food and warm atmosphere and caring staff.

We then had to wait well over an hour for food, which was very nice. Asked for condiments, which took ages to arrive, in mean time good was going cold. Ordered drinks that never arrived as well. The deposit amount on final bill was wrong as well. Overall food was good but service was terrible, despite bad reviews from friends and neighbours we chose it as its local and good to support local pubs but I would not go back or recommend for a special occasion. There was a lack of management of front of house staff, the staff they had seemed lost at times, but they were pleasant and never rude.

The food (fish pie main, crumble desert) were delicious, and they must keep a good Cellar because the beer was really good. A few of the locals were kind enough to offer up some good conversation and although there was Christmas music, much of it was slightly less mainstream and not so loud that people couldn't enjoy each other's company. As Thursday evenings go, this one was really very pleasant, like being at home, but with the added bonus of fantastic company, tasty food and drink and a wonderful smile as warm as the fire.

We arrived on a Sunday, in Newhaven, 4hrs before our ferry was due to leave for Dieppe. All the restaurants we looked at, had finished serving food and then we happened upon The Flying Fish and what a find it was! From stepping in the door, we were made to feel so welcome, (which is very unusual in a rural pub!) from Will, the Bar Manager and regulars, Nicki, Steve & Phil. Even though it was late, the Chef managed to rustle up two fabulous Sunday Dinners for us. There was so much, we couldn't eat it all and the kitchen very kindly put what was leftover, in foil, to take away with us. So we enjoyed another Sunday dinner the next day, when we arrived back in France! Great hospitality, we will definitely be back next time we are in Newhaven! Wishing Will and the Flying Fish team, every success in their new venture, just carry on what your doing! 👍

The pub is very easy reached from Newhaven Port, 40 mi We arrived late on a Sunday evening, in Newhaven, 4hrs before our ferry was due to leave for Dieppe. Really nice traditional pub, didn’t get food but it looked amazing, however the drinks are extremely expensive. Paid nearly £7 for a pint of cheap beer. Really don’t understand why the prices need to be that high, I understand they need to make money but nowhere else charges like that especially when the pub is in a poor area. It isn’t central Brighton so why charge this for a local pub? Would like to go back but can’t justify those prices for a quick pint

We hadn’t been to The Fish for a few years but since hearing it was under new management we decided to pop in for drinks. We had a really warm welcome from Will who served us and Nick and Ellie the new owners. We decided to eat and had lamb and beef roasts. The food was absolutely delicious! Lovely portions, really hot and fresh. Nothing had been heated up. We shared a crumble for pudding as the portions were so good and again this was lovely. Will definitely be returning to this lovely little pub.

Under new management. Only one beer on tap. Over an hour wait for food. The food was of poor quality, but asking for top money. Wouldn't go again.

Our table was booked for 2:30on a Sunday. We arrived 30 mins early so we had a drink in the beer garden. They had no beers on tap, they had run out of lemonade. We went to put our food order in and was told the kitchen was overloaded and to wait. After about 15 mins we put our order in, 2roast beefs, 2 nut roasts and 2 sides of cauliflower cheese. Our food didn't arrive until 3:35!!! The roast beef was adequate, although on the tough side, the nut roast was made from rice , the cauliflower cheese was 4 small florets in watery sauce X 2.£4.50 per portion. Roast £17.95. 1 medium pasta bowl of veg between 4. Truly disappointing. Only positive was they took the nut roastsand cauliflower cheeseiffthe bill. The extra negative, it still cost £70!! It is under new management.

Cycling from London to Paris and arrived in Newhaven about 6.30pm just before dark, with about 4 hours before we could check-in for the ferry. Had a relaxing time sorting cycling gear, recharging ourselves and phones, Garmins etc including a few drinks and a good evening meal. Just what we needed.

The dirtiest pub ever, my glass was so dirty you couldn't see through it. We were going to eat but decided not to as the place was so dirty. The dogs will not leave you alone anyone who does not like dogs will hate this place. Such a same this could be a lovely little gem but sadly it's not

We made a last minute decision to go out for fish and chips rather than go to the takeaway with my parents who are down for the weekend. Great decision! Haddock and chips with peas and tartare sauce. Huge portion perfectly cooked. Lovely barman. Great atmosphere pub with friendly locals. Cannot wait to return ! Thank you

So scruffy dog hair everywhere. Along with the publicans 3 dogs in the garden which is fine apart from one dog continually barking unless you played with him. The place and people were lovely which made up for the lack of hygiene and general rundown look of the place. Clearly its too much to handle for the current owner. Has immense potential

Quirky little country pub. Very welcoming atmosphere. Limited menu but something for everyone cooked to a very high standard. Working away ,the landlady Vicky accommodated us to a cooked dinner at 19.00 when she would normally stop at 17.00. This was for ten people. Above and beyond like the food.

This place has dropped it's standards since we last visited. It was grubby and clearly had not been cleaned properly in a while. The tables, floors, cutlery, glasses, toilets. Everything was visibly unclean. The staff didn't seem happy. It is half full of people working on laptops, so the atmosphere has taken a dive too. Such a shame.

Jamie was a life saver for me, I badly choked on some bread and was struggling to breath. He helped dislodge by hitting my back, along with my friend, they got me to the ladies and I managed to clear the obstruction. He checked on me twice along with other staff who brought some ice cream to sooth my throat . 24 hours later I recieved a call from the manager Paul, to see how I was. Wonderful customer care and super staff. Thank you very much 😊

Called in on spec to this pub for a quick pint. Ordered 2 pints of Cruzcampo lager that looked lively but was completely flat by the time I got to the table. Outrageously expensive at £12.80 for the two pints. Absolute no atmosphere in this pub. At least the barmaid was welcoming and friendly..
