Always wanted to go this restaurant ever since it opened, but circumstances stopped me going until now. I have had a craving for Gyozas for such a long time and they were amazing. We decided to have lots of dishes from their small plates menu, very reasonably priced, great vibe and super friendly service. We will return to try out their Katsu, it is a shame they don't have Ramen on their menu. Highly recommended.

We had an enjoyable dinner at Taguchi-Ya in Totnes. We enjoyed the set menu of the day, see the chalk board posted on the wall when you walk in for details. We also shared a few of the small plates and kimchi. Meal was ended with a lovely glass of umeshu served with a plum inside.

Eaten Japanese food before always been a favourite of my friend and I. Whilst in the area we thought an ideal choice for our even meal. Very bad mistake, most of it couldn't be eaten. It was just pure salt from overuse of products. The only think that was enjoyable was the tea. We were ill for two days following the parts of a meal we were able to eat.

This is the second time that my wife and I have visited this place. The food is really tasty, creative, and very refreshing. It is very popular as it is always busy. That is down to very good food, and a very good experience that is down to Alison who is front of house, she is excellent, very informative, and very knowledgeable, but most of all very kind. This place caters to alternative diets as my wife is Gluten, egg, and dairy free. Thank you all for a lovely evening.

We booked this before we arrived and we glad we did as it’s a very small restaurant and clearly very popular with locals . As not to au fait with Japanese food we went for the set meals with one of us having the fish in tempura batter and the other mackerel in a chilli sauce . Both were absolutely delicious . They came with miso soup, rice and four sides . Looking at what others were having off the main menu I wish we lived nearby as I would love to try some of the others things we saw people eating. .We also tried green tea with toasted rice for the first time which had a really nutty , malty flavour . A great find slightly off the Main Street at the bottom of the town

Having been disappointed by a few other restaurants in the area we stumbled into this gorgeous little restaurant. Enquired about a table to be advised that none were available. With bowed heads we started to accept our hungry fate. However the amazing lady serving suggested we come back in 10 mins as there may be a space. So that's what we did! A few more minutes later than 10 mins we returned and indeed a table was now available. We both like Japanese cuisine anyway but the food we sampled from here was absolutely outstanding. All tasted freshly cooked and lovingly prepared. This is well worth a visit and a return visit when next in the area.

Personally, my favourite Japanese restaurant I’ve tried anywhere outside of Japan. Everything about Taguchiya screams ‘authentic Japanese dining’ - the decor, the scent, the service, the atmosphere, and most importantly - the food. For £15, you can order a perfectly balanced set meal: rice, miso soup, four different sides, and a main meat (or vegetarian) dish. If I had to recommend a single dish, it would have to be the karaage chicken - fried chicken with a pleasingly crisp batter and a succulent interior. Would definitely recommend to anyone interested in trying real Japanese food!

I am always searching for authentic cuisine — to me that means staying true to the heart and tradition of a culture, even in a place far away. Taguchi-ya takes regional fresh ingredients and prepares them as if in Japan, with excellent results. I tried Set C on the menu and enjoyed each bite. Unpretentious, delicious and beautifully presented.

After reading all the excellent reviews we were looking forward to trying the food from Taguchi-Ya. Unfortunately though our take away dinner was very disappointing. Some of the sauces and sides that we ordered were missing but the main disappointment was the quality of the food we did receive. We tried a range if the set meals, kids meals, sushi gyoza and curry. All were bland and flavourless and poorly cooked, the rice was over cooked and the sushi was poor even by supermarket standards. Unfortunately, we will not be returning.

Authentic and traditional Japanese food that comes with a big warm heart. If you’re looking for your bowl to be filled with awesome tasty loveliness then you’ve come to the right place. This is home style cooking, and I mean “home style” in terms of visiting your Aunty or your mother and she has cooked your favourite dish, with ingredients and recipes she has used for years and she simply cares about you being full and happy. Taguchiya is a simple, happy place to be, great to eat alone or with family and friends. They have a brilliant herbal tea menu consisting of Japanese teas. With a menu that changes weekly it’s great if you fancy being adventurous and trying new things, or if you like to play it safe and stick with what you know. It’s a great place to try if you’ve never had Japanese food before. Lunch is usually a choice between different Japanese sandwiches (which are giant and super tasty) or Donburi (Boiled rice with a choice of topping) which comes with miso soup. If you’re vegan or vegetarian you can’t go wrong. Meat lovers also have a great choice too. Dinner is usually different choices of bento boxes. If you’re a desserts person, their traditional Japanese desserts are incredible. The talent it takes to make them fresh blows my mind. They also do takeaway for collection, and have kept both my family and others going with their beautiful food during Lockdown!

Our latest visit here was for lunch, although we've eaten in the evening a couple of times. Every time has been the same - nice welcome, nice Japanese food, not too much strain on the wallet. Not flash, not pretentious, but very good. Check the opening hours, because they may be different to those mentioned in the earliest reviews.Totnes has sufficient places providing innovative and interesting variants on gastro pub nosh to fill a column in the Guardian. It's sadly short on reasonably authentic and reasonably priced ethnic restaurants. We are fortunate to have this one to enjoy.

Sauntered last this morning and noticed a tantalising pile of ring doughnuts with custard together with other delights casually piled on a table at the front. Thought on it while I was otherwise wandering for about an hour only to discover on my return that the only ring doughnuts on display were naked save the sugar coat. Politely enquires only to be told that a man had come in early bought a handful of the custard versions, returned not long afterwards for some more and soon after that to buy up the entire stock. I was told that it is not unusual for punters to be mesmerised like this. I was offer one of the residual plain ones (‘made with the same dough’) and a neat little covered tart containing the custard that I had failed to grab so much earlier. Really good people here. Steady trade for these items, others and their excellent bread. This is a really good bakery. It’s not a daytime cafe and they do not sell hot or cold drinks. But I highly recommend them. I understand that the sister business in the evening does a roaring trade as Flour & Rice.

Love this quirky bakery that becomes a restaurant in the evening. Lucky enough to have had Japanese food here twice. Both meals completely different and equally delicious. We’ve visited a few times over the past couple of months. We tried the pizza night first and then the Japanese. Both excellent. Pizza was light, crispy and toppings were excellent quality. The Japanese food was fantastic and for a small canteen in Devon, it’s probably as authentic as you’ll get for a few miles around. Really light dishes with a focus on simple, strong flavours. The mochi was lovely. It’s a small and intimate space which if you arrive at the wrong time, it can mean losing out to a table. Certainly worth it though.

Flour and Rice is my new favourite. I try not to eat out too much and like to cook home made dishes but I went back to flour and rice three weekends in a row. My first visit was on Raman night which only happens once a month and the food is incredible. It’s a small restaurant and you can’t call and book. You just turn up and if there’s a wait have a drink close by until they call you which for us was only half hour or so and was a Saturday night. Sounds a bit bizarre but it’s totally worth it! I have the spicy pork miso noodle soup the first time and it did not disappoint.

I've just got back from having my first meal in this lovely little Japanese canteen. I say 'first' because I know that I will be going back there again and again. I've got bored of eating out because the food so often disappoints, however, this was a fantastic treat for the tastebuds. My friends and I tasted each other's dishes and EVERYTHING was utterly delicious. I have been lucky enough to go to Japan and eaten in several Japanese friends' houses so I have an idea of how good Japanese food can be. If you have been to any of the big chains that offer limp imitations of Japanese food come and eat here and you will have a wonderful surprise. Actually, why am I writing this review - I want to keep the place all to myself!

There ain't a lot of tables so bear that in mind, you might not be able to just turn up and be guaranteed to eat. Little wait, but that ok, it's fresh pizza! And it was great pizza, some of the best. Best around the torbay area for me.Beautiful base, slightly salted so not bland. It was also a cheap meal, two pizzas, two beers for about £20. Great stuff, keep it up.

Went for an early valentines meal here and it's fair to say both myself and my boyfriend loved it. We each had the set dinner menu, where you choose the main - meat, fish or vegetarian. I opted for the vegetarian because I'd never had tofu before. It was fried and served with a ginger and pepper sauce. Very nice! My boyfriend had the meat dish which was pork and he said it was perfectly cooked. The set menu comes with little plates of about 5 different sides, I remember potato salad with cucumber (really nice!), red cabbage and califlower. You also get a bowl of miso soup and a portion of rice. The food came quickly and was really delicious. It's wholesome, home cooked food, done very well. At £15 per person it is reasonably priced for the very high quality of food you're getting.Overall, amazing food, good service and a nice relaxed atmosphere!

WOW!!No bookings so luck of the draw with seating. Would say seating for 16-20? We got the last table free at 7 on a November Thursday night. Extensive menu - 3 set menus based on fish, veg or meat each with bowl of rice, miso soup & 3 side dishes. All arrived on a tray with dipping sauces, salads, etc. There is much, much more to choose from: a page of small dishes, bowls of udon noodles, a range of katsu curries, the list goes on. Had a gorgeous matcha ice cream sundae to finish. An extensive drinks selection too from juices to teas, wine & 5/6 sakes. The service was friendly & unobtrusive. Prices are very reasonable for food & drink.I think this is rapidly going to become immensely popular. Go while you can still get in!

We visit The Flavell for coffee and cake quite often, and are always happy with the service and food. On this particular day we had lunch, soup which was a bit thin and bread, but quite nice. While I was drinking a coffee after my lunch, I looked towards the preparing area and to my surprise watched one of the ladies making a sandwich, she picked up the filling with her bare hands plus the salad and put it together between the slices of bread. While you might do this at home, I would have thought preparing food for customers would necessitate wearing some sort of hand covering. This has put me off eating sandwiches at the Flavel, and will stick to coffee and cake in future. At least the cakes are served from their display with tongs.
