This place never lets you down. The cooking is delicious and authentic, the service attentive and amusing.

We drove here because of the review but man I wouldn’t recommend it at all, even if you’re desperate for japanese food. The karaage was crunchy and soft but bland, need to dip in soup sauce. The katsudon is sooooooo chewy it will hurt your jaw, rice is soggy and drowned in soy sauce. I guess as this is the only asian restaurant open in this town why they have high stars.

Really fantastic place to eat in Totnes, we get the takeaway every week or so and the flavours are brilliant, the menu changes enough each week to keep it interesting- we get the set menu. Price is very reasonable and we are happy to keep the asset to the town alive. Its very small to eat in and noisy with the lack of soft furnishing anywhere. They could move to a larger spot on the High St and gain a larger following locally (current location useless for passing trade), but obviously like to keep costs low. Also as a tip, if desserts were clearly shown on the takaway menu online, you would easily be able to upsell. Having them hidden or not there at all means we forget to order a dessert. Love it!

Really good value, tasty food, wonderful service! The only reason I scored the food down is that I had a slightly upset tummy after... perhaps some of the tempura was a little more oily for me than I'd like. But overall I loved it. Set meal was unusual and had small little portions that were sustaining and also prevent food waste. The jar of kimchee was homemade and so delicious it was the gift that kept giving. It was different to the kind of Japanese food you get in sushi restaurants, and from what I tasted of the macha green icecream the pudding was utterly divine!

Such a little gem of Totnes! The food was amazing, especially the Set menu and the matcha ice cream. The staff and atmosphere were lovely, I would reccomend it to anyone who enjoys asain food. Definitely book online because it was quite busy, 100% worth it though. Will hopefully be visiting again soon!

Eating at Taguchi-ya was a great experience. The two Japanese ladies are very friendly and attentive and made us feel right at home. The food was fresh and tasty, absolutely fabulous. For anyone who likes Japanese food this is a must. Do make a reservation as the place is not huge and they are always busy as they are so good!

I’ve never been to Japan but I imagine this is the closest you can get in Devon. Food is delicious and very reasonably priced! A great experience.

Fun Japanese diner with great food and friendly service. I very much recommend getting a meal set because of the variety of items you'll get but it looks like it would be hard to order something bad here.

Visited here one evening with my girlfriend. A very quaint small restaurant with an atmosphere that took me back to my holiday in Japan. Wonderful food, we had the breaded Hake and glazed Mackerel. Both were absolutely delicious cooked fish with an English twist of potato salad. I highly recommend a meal here for some delicious Japanese food in the beautiful Devon town of Totnes.

Best food in Totnes probably. As someone who has lived in Japan and is constantly sad about the lack of Japanese and East Asian food, in general, in Devon - I feel very lucky to have this here. However my toddler wasn't too keen on half a wet banana ("fruit salad") in the box with his kareage one time lol but in the grand scheme of things, this can be forgiven :)

Yummy food and good service. Only downside was that it was chilly. Customers eating in coats and hats indoors.

Now renamed Taguchi-ya, what was a pop-up with a tiny menu has become a fully-featured Japanese restaurant which serves really delightful food. Totnes is honoured.

After few days of eating fancy food, this was exactly what we needed. A heartwarming meal. They squeezed us in even though they were busy. Tofu katsu curry and tofu set meal were amazing. Panna cotta was okay, I’m not a big fan, but it was my husband who ordered it and he absolutely loved it. 😅

What an amazing meal we had here last night. They had a choice of 3 set menus for £15, one with fish, one with meat and one vegan, as well as a standard menu. We had the Vegan option and everything on the tray was included. The flavours were exquisite and the service was friendly, we’ll definitely be back.

My wife and I love the food here. No fault whatsoever. Will be returning in the future.

Visited here with my wife and… wow! Really authentic Japanese cooking - so hard to find outside of London but a hidden gem here in Devon. Can’t recommend highly enough. We had the set menu (chicken teriyaki and fish), gyoza on the side, the matcha sundae and milk ice cream with sesame and toasted rice. Sakura black tea is also recommended. Fabulous!

Two of our party lived in Japan for years and we all agreed it was easily the best Japanese food we've had in the UK, if not more widely. Fresh, generous, delicious, authentic. Cannot recommend enough.

We are regulars and every meal we've had has been excellent. My wife is half-Asian and holds their cooking in very high regard. Recommended!

Excellent dinner in the little outside space.

An absolute gem of a place, selling wonderful food that is both healing and indulgent in a calm, relaxed little canteen. A small piece of constructive criticism is that it would be good if the waiter knew a little more about the food, maybe spend a bit more time tasting and explaining ingredients before service. But this didn't have any sort of a negative impact. Brilliant!

The vegetable tempura was a bit disappointing. The staff was not informative, would be good if they are informed about the food they serve.

Delicious and authentic food. Pricey, but it's worth it once in a while, great selection of meat-free options and delicious teas.

This is my favourite place to eat out in Totnes. I have a Japanese friend who says the food here reminds of her of her mothers home cooking. The menu is unlike any other Japanese restaurant and the food is fresh, eclectic and lovingly cooked. I cannot recommend it enough. Also there are special Japanese inspired afternoon tea events, focusing on desserts, which are equally special and totally unique.

Would really recommend this to anyone staying in Totnes, up there with the best Japanese food I’ve had. We had the set meal with mackerel and the tofu katsu curry, both were good but the mackerel was unbelievable!

1st time we've ordered from here - it didn't disappoint & was great value. They currently offer eat in or take-away pizzas on Monday nights only. No blonde pizzas, all of them have a tomato & mozzarella base. Set pizzas & daily specials offered. We had 2 of the latter Gammon & Peppers (with extra artichoke) & my husband had Fig & Blue Cheese with extra Nduja. We'll be going back. Great.

If you think you have eaten a custard doughnut before you're probably wrong! Try one from Flour & Rice then get back to me to say if I'm wrong... Sooo full of real custard you're only worry is whether it explodes when you bite into it. Naughty but nice!
