We saw some interesting wooden beams above the counter, And cakes and bread , items that looked amazing on the counters. We had our puppy with us and asked if dogs were allowed to sit under the table in the corner of the shop. “Yes of course but take her upstairs” we were told. Wow a hidden gem….. Upstairs was wonderful ( we later found out) the building was 16th century and had a large white painted beamed restaurant with clean lovely wooden tables and the owner who could not do enough to make our visit special. The food was different from other places was wonderful. Our dog was made a fuss of as much as us. A hidden special place that needs more visitors to expierence what we did.

This cafe deserves a queue to get in. It's light, bright and welcoming and the food is good and reasonably priced. Staff are friendly and helpful. It doesn't advertise itself at the door - go in and walk upstairs.

Wow, Wow, Wow. Came in for a drink and a snack with the family. Savouries were fantastic (sandwich, sausage roll etc, great selection), Cakes were delicious, again large selection, coffee was excellent. To top it all off the building is fascinating and really well presented, prices seemed very reasonable. If you are in Chelmsford then I'd strongly suggest trying in here, much better than the usual chains.

Our sausage, egg, bacon, onion relish bagels were very good and came with a side salad and dressing. Coffee lovely. Staff were friendly and efficient. Not overpriced. Pretty setting in old building. Food and service better than the other nearest cafe type establishments. 3rd visit, good each time. The cakes were delicious on a previous visit.

Will not be returning! We came for breakfast at 9:30 am and the premises was freezing cold, to the point that I could see my own breath and my 2yo hands were like ice, as were my toes. I asked for the heating to be turned on and the young lady said “I’ll ask the owner but he’s a bit funny about putting the heating on” - excuse me!?! As per the HSE’s website a workplace should be around 16degrees within the first hour of work, I can barely say it was 10 degrees in there. The food was bang average, not as high end as I think the owner believes it to be. The chef would benefit from adding a little bit of salt to his dishes and the ‘free range creamy eggs’ as per the kids menu was more like battery farmed microwaved eggs with no moisture! (See picture) I would expect a free range egg to have a good orange colour and not to be white and dry, luckily my 2yo doesn’t care and will eat almost anything, however if I was eating that, it would have been returned. Mine and my husband’s breakfast was OK but nothing to rave about, you can get a better breakfast almost anywhere else in Chelmsford.

Staff are very professional and polite nothing too much trouble. Food Eggs Royal and Eggs Benedict some of the best we have eaten. Service very prompt. Would have rated 5 stars but for the fact we were so cold. No heating at all and all diners were sitting in coats. This is not acceptable please owners provide heating.

The atmosphere is very quaint and really pretty. The food we ordered was lovely and well presented. Prices were reasonable and I will definitely be back for brunch. The selection of cakes is exemplary and looked spectacular. Well worth a visit in Chelmsford.

Went into shop to have coffee and cake today, went upstairs and it is amazing. Lovely beams and seating area. Menu looked amazing so ended up having lunch, coffee and cake! The cakes were beautifully made and the food was fresh and amazing! Very clean inside and staff were lovely. Omg the sourdough is amazing, had this for toast this evening, I'm definitely going back for more. You can even take your dog inside. Xx

Plus points: Chelmsford needs more independent shops like this to stem the flow of chains. The food is great but rather expensive. Negative points: i went in the opening day and it was pretty chaotic. Far too many staff for a shop that size. I put it down to the fact it was day one. On the next occasion, music had been added. The problem was it was too loud and distorted. As a result, it was hard to hear what the person serving was saying and the person behind the counter couldn’t hear me. My wife went on another occasion to buy a cake. On queuing up to pay, she was informed she had to pay an additional £28 for a meal upstairs. Despite the fact wife had just walked in and hadn’t eaten there, the staff member insisted she pay, until another staff member intervened. Today my wife went to make another purchase. The shop was virtually empty, but she still had to wait a long time before being served. I don’t like writing reviews like this, but the shop has so much potential and it would be a shame if we lost, but it does have teething problems. I really hop that some of them can be addressed

I’m so frustrated and annoyed I have waited for you to open and arrived this morning early. The staff behind the counter had to be told to start serving although the young lady who served myself was clearly not awake - the boxes were not closed, the only one that was damaged the cake then no suitable boxes could be found- I wished to purchase more then I did but gave up £30 later this is what I was presented with! The macaroon and honey cake ok, soda bread - croissant are they baked fresh daily?? Pistachio choc brownie was that fresh it’s like a brick - What a shame had such high expectations

Very central to Chelmsford high street but not too busy, a great place for fresh homemade bread and cakes, which you don’t find anymore. Decent price, was pleasantly surprised and will definitely be a regular

I've wanted to go to this pub for ages. The reason being it was Keith flints pub. I was absolutely made up that I've photos of me outside which I'll frame. I do live far away so this has made my year being a big fan. I went inside and it was not what I expected. To be honest it has some nice charm to it. A real nice country pub. Prices are reasonable and the bar staff very friendly. I would recommend and would love to go back again.

A lovely surprise. Nice food and friendly staff. The beer range is good and reasonably priced. Situated next to Asda, a welcome watering hole for a thirsty shopper.
