Fleece Inn in Waveney

Popped into the Fleece for a late lunch on Saturday 27 April - food was good as expected, however the customer service was excellent well done guys!

Brilliant meal staff were lovely and friendly. Would highly recommend. Second time I've been, will definitely be going again.

Complete impromptu visit while visiting the town where I went to school. Excellent service, nice not over complicated menu and something for everyone. My partner and I chose four dishes to share between us. 1x the mackerel pate, which my partner said was possibly the best she'd ever had. Ix hallumi sticks with sweet chilli sauce. Very tasty. Ix pork fresh scotch egg with caramelised onion chutney, again very tasty. I x portion of 2 different houmus. It's a little bland, but certainly not worth a slating. The beer mynither half had was lovely. Well kept, good temperature. I just had a Campari which was fine. Not overpriced and I'll definitely go again next time I'm in Bungay.

So disappointed! Having visited the Fleece on numerous occasions over the past five years and had wonderful meals we can only assume there has been a change of chef. I chose the Sea Bream, the fish itself was cooked to perfection but the accompanying vegetables were so tough that I could not cut them and the sauce was tepid. The waitress offered a fresh serving of beans and broccoli but unfortunately the beans were still like leather and this time the broccoli was over cooked. Sadly this was supposed to be a birthday celebration, entirely let down by the food.

Can’t recommend highly enough. Staff extremely friendly and welcoming. Both meals were delicious, best pub food I’ve had in a long time.

Last time I went to this pub I experienced poor quality food and frosty customer service. As a result I had avoided ever since but I had to return last month as my family booked a family birthday party there. I wasn’t looking forward to going back, but I have to say I had a completely different experience. The staff were all really friendly and couldn’t have been more helpful and the food was excellent. Maybe there’s been a change of ownership.

This is a great place to enjoy time with friends or family. We came as a group of 7 for dinner Friday night and loved it so much we came back for Sunday lunch that same weekend. Great food, service and value was felt by all of us! Definitely recommend.

Top class for food , service and venue . So nice being in the trade to be welcomed by a great friendly team who looked happy to be there . First class service . Our table was checked on to see if everything was ok and it certainly was . Our friend who’s 101 was made to feel very special and old fashioned service os somewhat lacking today . Another absolutely first class Mother’s Day lunch at our favourite restaurant! Excellent service especially as part of our family were delayed on an exceptionally busy day. We were not rushed and our meal was wonderful and we’re all already looking forward to next time.

Delicious family meal here to celebrate a birthday. Easily the nicest bit of steak I’ve ever had, cosy restaurant and lovely friendly staff! Would recommend to anyone and can’t wait to come back again. Thank you!

We booked for dinner on a Tuesday evening, the service and food was absolutely faultless , we can't wait to try the Sunday roast. Reasonably priced and highly recommended.

Plus points; plenty of options, especially non meat, reasonably priced, service was good, food arrived quickly, food was pleasant. Negatives. Not the most dazzling atmosphere. Definitely a pub, not a restaurant. But the main issue was there simply wasn't enough and we had to buy bread to complement. Nouvelle cuisine is a very specific style of ultra refined cooking relying of freshness and lightness, not as many chefs mistake it; simply halving rather more ordinary dishes! Hopefully they read this and bring extra vegetables to the table or at least offer them. In France they still bring bread as a matter of course, I wish more English restaurants would follow this lead. I'd only recommend that you eat there if you aren't very hungry.

This was our first meal at the fleece and it was superb, I had smoked haddock & my partner home made fish fingers, with skin on chips and dressed salad and a side of onion rings. It was all cooked to perfection and we will definitely go back and work our way through their menus. The eating & bar areas are all beautifully decorated with a welcoming feel and all the staff were friendly and not overly priced either. I Highly recommend this privately owned gem in Bungay.

We have been here as a family several times now and today we were celebrating hubby’s birthday. The service was exceptional and the food superb and very reasonable priced. Why travel any further when this place is only 6 miles away. Nothing is ever too much to ask of them and we will be back soon! Cannot recommend highly enough!

Never been to Bungay before and decided on lunch at The Fleece Inn. So glad we did! Delicious, locally sourced food, everything beautifully cooked and an excellent menu. We were turned away with lies saying that they had no empty tables that could accommodate our party of eight. When we walked away we could see into the pub and there was tables available. We could only assume that the reason was that we were not wearing masks.

Took my elderly auntie and uncle here because they live locally and like it. For me it was my first visit. I have to say having had lunch there I am at a loss as to why they are so keen. The interior decor is nice but the chairs were hard and uncomfortable. None of our chairs had cushions and when we asked if there was a cushion available for my elderly aunt, the waitress (manageress??) huffed and stole one from a bench at a nearby table that was occupied without speaking to us or the other table! We were only provided two napkins for 4 people and the manageress looked really unimpressed when we requested two more - which she never actually brought, my husband ended up having to go and ask again after our food had arrived. The ketchup bottle on our table was empty so we requested ketchup and were given 3 sachets - for 4 people, again by a non-communicative and unfriendly staff member. We shared them rather than ask again. I requested another drink during the meal and again the manageress gave me the impression my request was an unwelcome chore. The actual meal was also poor. My husband and I had the burger and chips. We both thought the burger lacked flavour, it just tasted like unseasoned mince rather than a burger, and both the burger and chips were completely saturated with oil. It was oozing out of the chips onto the plate as I tried to cut them. I hate greasy food. Oil was also coming out of the burger roll as I was trying to eat it. Others on the table had the fish and chips and said they were very good. And there wasn’t a long wait for the food to arrive. Only two of the group had a drink, (one of which was a half of larger) the rest of us were on water, we all only had one course and two of us had a coffee and the meal cost us over £80 for 4. I’m happy to pay for good food and service but sadly had neither at the Fleece. If the staff don’t enjoy working in hospitality- go and get a job where you don’t have to be friendly.

Four of us had a meal on 13/11. Great service, really lovely autumnal options on the menu. We all were very impressed by the standard of food. We all had three courses, which is rare, but we’re too tempted not to.Would definitely recommend to others.

Arrived around 21.15.We were greeted at the rear entrance by a young lady ,very polite but nervous.We told her there were eight of us and she said she would check availability. At this point,an older lady who was very unfriendly and rude appeared,she told us there wasn't any tables available so we said what if we split our group up.We were told "no"So we said we would sit outside "no,no drinks outside"No apologies, a complete lack of customer care.We walked away irritable and angered As we walked past the front windows,we looked in,several tables unoccupied. We live locally, and having visited here before, we will never go here again,and pass our feelings on to anyone who asks about this pub

Our party arrived at different times and having not seen each other for nearly 2 years lots of chat. We were told we would need to order quickly as the kitchen closed at 8pm, no problem. All meal were good and great time being had when at approx 8.50 we were told they were closing at 9 !We felt really let down, had we been told we would have gone elsewhere, spending a good sum of money we were expecting to have a decent time to sit , relax with dinner and drink. we arrived approx at 7.45 and out the door at 9 As leaving I approached who I thought was the manager for the evening, well that was deaf ears if ever I encounted , well its a thursday, we open later on a weekend ... sadly poor . I do not often leave bad feedback but I definately will think twice before returning

During our stay in Bungay we eat at The Fleece twice, the standard Saturday evening menu and the Sunday lunch. After being let down last minute on Saturday evening by another restaurant we headed to The Fleece. The staff were so so so helpful and kind, they sorted us a table and the service was outstanding. Portions were great and so lovely. We returned the next day for Sunday lunch to be greeted by the same lovely happy staff. The roast was delightful, so so so tasty.We plan to return next year and will be booking in for another Sunday roast!!

my husband and i have eaten here regularly now over the last couple of months and what a find! we travel nearly and hour to go here because the food is beautifully prepared, great on the eyes, fantastic on the taste buds and pleasing to the wallet. decor is beautiful, chairs comfy and staff very very friendly smart and polite. well done to all who are involved in this great place.

Had a wonderful lunch here today - tasty rare roast beef and really well cooked selection of veg inc roast beetroot and spicy red cabbage. Also my first experience of a haddock poached egg and whisky and rye pudding - and a nice glass of merlot - served by a lovely friendly staff - highly recommended

If I was to base my review on my first visit, with my husband, I would have given the Fleece Inn 5 stars. The tall guy who served us was the example of great customer care and made us feel really welcome.After having such a nice experience, I went back again, this time alone. If i was to base my review on the second visit, it would be 2 stars.The female member of staff, who I think was sadly a manager, was simply rude. She would do things like pick up and place my menu on the table without a word, brought over a pot of tea without saying anything, and at 3 different points I tried to grab her attention but with no response. The table of 4 adjacent to me looked so fed up with her on my behalf, that the dad of the group called over to her for me (and I wasn't being quiet, and it wasn't very busy). When she did come over, she didn't apologise or seemed like she cared.It doesn't take much to be warm and welcoming, and I really hope, if we dare try it again, that the hospitality levels are improved. Felt very unwelcome the second time.The food, however, on both occasions was fantastic - really delicious - and the building itself is lovely and full of character.

Visited The Fleece Inn on a whim this afternoon after trekking through a pumpkin field and farm. The staff was very lovely and very accommodating for our party of 6 to include two small children. The decor is a lovely, minimalistic/rustic design that elicits quite a posh atmosphere in a very casual dining experience. We had the baked camembert to start and man, that ooey-gooey cheese was just what was needed after being out in the chilled, drizzly morning. We also enjoyed 4 roasts, a mixture of the beef and pork variety and these were equally lush. The addition of beetroot and pickled cabbage was delightful.100% would recommend if you find yourself in Bungay on a Sunday midday.

Fantastic roast dinner! Very welcoming and friendly- happy to accommodate us and our little doggy. The beef we had was locally sourced,cooked perfectly and served with fantastic Yorkshire puddings and nicely cooked vegetables.

We visited the Fleece Inn for lunch, we were made to feel rather uncomfortable during the experience by a particular senior staff member. As we had a buggy, we were moved away from the main restaurant to another location which was actually smaller. Unfortunately, during the time we were there some young youths shot a mini toy gun through the restaurant window in which the staff member didn’t fill us with confidence that this wasn’t an isolated incident and reluctantly closed the window in the end. The food was ok in general, bit on the pricey side for pub grub. At the end once we’d paid the bill, whilst waiting for my wife to change my daughter in the toilet, the senior staff member once again commented on us to move outside the restaurant as the buggy was supposedly taking up space in the entrance. This was rather odd as there was a bench specifically to sit down, although there was no one present coming in or out at that time. We declined this offer and made her aware that we’d wait until we were ready to leave. Shame such an attitude was taken by this staff member, poor hospitality, no need to treat customers in this way. Highly unlikely to return in future.

Service here was truly excellent and the food was delicious. As a group of six we ordered a selection of dishes from both the main menu and the light bites and all the meals were excellent with generous portions, even those from the light bite menu. The staff were welcoming and friendly and dealt with a small delay in our order with apologies and a round of drinks on the house. Highly recommend the beef burger.

We visited The Fleece with friends yesterday for Sunday lunch for the very first time whilst on holiday. Initial telephone contact to establish booking a table was very welcoming and helpful; it got even better when we arrived with our German Shepherd dog. Nothing was too much trouble to the staff who had adapted effortlessly to the Covid restrictions and procedures. The food was delicious and we thoroughly enjoyed the whole dining experience. Well done to everyone. We will definitely return on our next holiday to eat here!
