Friendly pub with good value food. Staff were very helpful, especially Ben. Also like that the pub is dog friendly, so the whole family can go out together.

So disappointed. Came for a family dinner. There were 5 of us all adults. Busy Sunday afternoon with football on and most tables booked out for food, but no where near enough staff, took 15 mins to get a drink. We all ordered the roast dinners. The food came out cold, the beef roast had 1 slice of meat. The roast potatoes were small and soggy, not crispy and the worst potatoes I’ve been served. Ordered a coffee but there was no milk as they had run out. Ordered puddings, when they came out there was no ice cream with them. When we asked we were told they had run out of that too but we were not told this when ordering or offered an alternative. Plus even though we complained, there was no apology or offer of discount or compensation. Ruined out family day, such a shame. Will not be going back there for food.

Took a mate of mine to experience wing Wednesday and to my surprise and disappointment NO WINGS!!!! Holy cow!!!! NO WING WEDNESDAY!!! people had travelled from afar yet NO WINGS ON WING WEDNESDAY!!!! UNBELIEVABLE. It's like going to the garage and they have no petrol or going to Greg's and they have no sausage rolls!!

Although I have often used The Coach & Horses for occassional meals as their food and prices have always been reasonable, my recent experiences of this gastro-pub has been exceptional. It has been revamped -as has the menu. The menu is quite extensive and varied -and includes grills, salads, gourmet-burgers, steaks etc. But they have also introduced a selection of 'Challenge Meals.' I have recently taken small groups of student-age visitors there from various countries and nationalities -and all without exception have enjoyed the meals and the experience immensely. One -from the USA- chose the 'Rib-a-Saurus' Challenge meal. He said that in both quality and quantity it was every bit as good as anything comparable back in the States. Special mention must be made of Zoe who is exceptional. aaShe managed to be extremely attentive and accommodating to us -but without 'fussing'- on an obviouslyses is good food and value for money -and a most satifying experience. Thoroughly recommendable!

Went to the Coach and Horses last night - first time in a few week's I have to say!! and during our absence they have changed Management and kitchen staff - and boy could you tell.I am sorry to say the standard in the kitchen has dropped so much we had our main meals taken off the bill - so needless to say we won't be going back to eat there again!! - sorry - considering my last posting was flying the flag BIG TIME for the food and staff at the C&H!! its a great shame and if we could find out where the previous chef has gone we would definitely follow her/him. Be AWARE!!

My husband and I popped in here for lunch today and although the food we did eat was ok, they didn't have any of the sauces that went with our meal ( 4 to choose from ) and the lady taking our order said there were no corn on the cobs (which was also an option to have with our meals) but she was corrected by another member of staff that they did have some now, the zero sugar drinks were advertised to receive a free shot of flavour with them so I asked for cherry to be added to mine, to which I was told they didnt have any, and then told they make the drinks flat anyway, all this for a saturday lunchtime isn't really acceptable especially as it wasn't even very busy when we were there, a few of the tables were left with plates etc on them for the entire time we were there too. All in all not a great visit today for the money we spent there, maybe they were all having an off day ? But we wont be returning any time soon.

In Portsmouth for a couple of days and arranged to meet up with my cousin for a meal out. Food was excellent and the atmosphere was great. The staff were very nice and friendly, and made for a great night out.

We went to eat on Sunday, it was not to busy and we only had to wait about 30 minutes for our food. We really enjoyed it one had a steak which was well cooked, another had a big daddy burger. All of the food we ordered was well cooked and the presentation was good. We all had 4 clean plates. We would go again as it has more of a selection of food than our local green king pub. Would recommend

Terrible terrible terrible customer service and the atmosphere was horrible because of every one getting drunk in the bar area by the side of the restaurant on a Sunday afternoon. Because I am disabled I had booked a table suitable for me and my family. On arrival told the young man behind the bar that I had booked a table so he looked in the book and said just getting the table ready for you. So after five minutes he said you’re table is ready and walked off ( he didn’t tell us which table or where it was). After five more minutes of looking for him I had to ask which table and he replied oh table six just around the corner ( by which time I was in a lot of pain from standing so long) so went to look for table six, it was occupied so had to find the young man again to tell him ( which took another five minutes) oh sorry it’s table seven I always get them mixed up he said and walked off again so went to table seven which was a booth ( because of my disability I cannot get into a booth or use steps which I had explained when booking the table) so I had to try to find the young man again and explained I couldn’t use a booth. By this time I had had been standing for over twenty minutes and was in so much pain I had to take extra pain meds . This time he actually came to show us to a different table but it was up stairs so explained to him again that because of my disability I couldn’t use a booth or stairs which is what I had explained when booking the table and had paid £15.00 for a taxi just to get my family and myself there And it was going to be another £15.00 for the return journey home. So Because of the pain I was in ( now I had been standing for more than thirty minutes) I looked in the bookings book found my name And next to my name it said table 12 which is what I had explained to him on arrival I had booked. Turns out he had sat someone else there by mistake just before we had arrived and was trying everything else and walking us from pillar to post trying not to show his mistake rather than over thirty minutes earlier explaining to the people his mistake and offering them a different table. So I asked for the manager And explained the situation to her and showed her in the bookings book I had reserved table 12 and that we had spent the last thirty minutes looking for the young man each time and being offered all different tables which we’re unsuitable and impossible for me to sit at , then she asked the people to move. By then I had to sit down before I fell down because of the pain. After being sat there for 5-10 minutes at a bare table my son and daughter had to go And find menus from other tables so we could order food and drinks ( I thought the manager might have come over to apologise and maybe say because this is your first visit to us and because of the mistakes with sitting you at the table you reserved And making you stand and walk to all the different tables please have your first drinks on us or let me get you and your family some thing to nibble on whilst you look at the menus or even let me give you a voucher towards your next visit because it is never usually like this and would like you and your family to be returning customers. But nothing) so went to order drinks and a coffee and told the coffee would be brought over. After ten minutes had to go and ask about the coffee, sorry I forgot about the coffee was the reply. So ordered the food nearly an hour after arriving. Ordered extra large of everything And sides. My son and daughter said there’s was very very good but because of the pain I was in I only managed an onion ring and had to have the rest wrapped up to take home. So I paid the bill and we left. We may try this restaurant again on a different day and hopefully different staff and management will be on because my son and daughter said that the food was very very good. But today’ Visit was just abysmal there was no hospitality or customer care shown at all.

Attended with family food was great and prices were good. will def recommend to anyone and will return soon.

Visited here a few weeks ago as a family. Second time we have been here as the first visit was just as good. We all ordered different things, some of us the food challenges so there was a lot of food to do! It all came out within a reasonable time and everyones meals all out together. The food was lovely, and everything was there. The waitress was nice, always asking if things were ok. The manager is lovely as well and always welcomes you when he is around. Overall, great visit and food! Will be coming again.

Have been going here on and off for about 40 years. This distinctive, prominent pub/restaurant has had its up and downs and changes of ownership but now it's definitely on the up! Food excellent, service is sharp, nice and clean inside and out, recommended.

Came here for my brothers birthday and had a wonderful time we all had our food at same time all different dishes nothing was too much trouble food was lovely manager was attentive

Very disappointed with our visit to the above on Saturday 27 July. The table was booked in the name for four people at 7.30. On arrival there was a disco going on at the far end of the premises which was so loud we had to raise our voices to talk to each other. There were hardly any people at the disco eitherThe restaurant which surprisingly for a Saturday only had a few occupied tables. We placed our order. Half an hour later ONLY one order arrived - Scampi and chips and a large portion of onion rings. No other orders arrived. Both were luke warm. We complained to the waitress who removed them and we also said to her that you don’t just bring out one order - you bring out all of the food out to all the guests at the same time so we can all eat our meals at the same time. Eventually all orders were brought out. This time the food was hot. I had mini ribs but there was NO coleslaw. I was told by the waitress they had run out. Suggest that your stocks are kept more fully stocked. Hard to believe they had run out as they certainly were not busy. It was an embarrassing evening with regard to the quality of the food, the disregard to us by the staff for the food. We certainly will not be returning or recommending this restaurant.

Often recommend this place and use it quite regularly. Always have a decent meal as well. Intend bringing our social club members here for their Christmas meal so look out for that review!

drinks can be expensive service can be slack, food seems to bee from Iceland or farm-foods and is rush cooked leading to dry and tasteless food which is hard to eat.

Went to coach & horses tonight for my mum's birthday, (5 adults 1 child) bad start to night told there was not the bits for salmon sizzler salad but I could have a salmon fajita, I decided to not order a meal, grandaughters sausages,carrots & garlic bread arrived, sausages were swimming in orange coloured oil & after cutting sausage in half the fat just dripped out,carrots were so shriveled & white specks on outside,waitress said it couldn't be oil as they are not deep fried,but she would return them to kitchen to see what she could do,but when other meals arrived they were lukewarm & the waffle chips were covered in what we thought was pepper,but turned out to be burnt black bits obviously from the frier where it's not cleaned out, fantastic manager come out apologised agreed the food was disgusting & should not of come out like it gave us our money back & offer of puds we declined,such a shame this ruined my mum's evening.

I visited the Coaches and Horses one night in May for a quick drink. I had such a great night that I’ve been back Atleast twice a week since. The bar staff are amazing, especially Tilly and Danielle who go out of their way to look after you and make you feel welcome. Highly recommend the food occasionally there is a wait but this should be expected as it is always busy but when the food arrived it is worth the wait. Love this place and think that some of the other reviews were written during a period of prior management and do not accurately reflect the coach and horses as it is today :D

Visited the coach and horses on saturday evening with my girlfriend and her sister and friend for what was a partly nostalgic meeting up for food and lots of drinks. However on arrival we were told there would be a 45 min wait for food which we reluctantly accepted. Skip 1hr 15mins later and we still hadnt received our order. We confronted the staff who then realised the order had been sent to the wrong table. We then had to wait again for them to re cook the food. By this point we had drank a bit and were getting agitated. Eventually received the food which was ok but not worth the wait. No apology or compensation from management, left to a lovely waitress to apologise constantly, although not her personal fault. Wont be visiting again at any point.

Large party, great portions, great service, food came out quickly. Value for money. Highly recommended

I was in Portsmouth visiting family this week and a friend in the area recommended the coach and horses as a good family pub to sit and relax have a few drinks and food and can say I wasn’t disappointed the pub itself had a nice warm welcome as you walk through the door the staff looked professional and happy I went to the bar didn’t have to wait long to be served our drinks i had a pint of strongbow dark fruit the glass was clean and the right brand and I went to sit down had a look at the menu such a great variety of food I went for the smoked meat grill I went back to the bar and ordered was told the food would be out in 20 minutes sat back down and waited the food came out in 10 minutes the brisket was really good melted on your mouth the sausage was nice had nice little spice flavour to it the belly pork was really juicy all in all was a really nice meal great atmosphere in the pub would really recommend this pub to anyone I know who is coming to Portsmouth

Never been a fan of the Greene King chain of restaurants, pubs were great, but the restaurants in my experience are badly run cheap outlet's. However last night proved to be an exception to that rule, we had steak meals and combos and to be honest there were delicious and thankfully I also managed to find my favourite beer, Abbot ale. The only down side was the chavy culture, next door a pool table, football and the usual baseball hatted Jeremy Kyle types decided to demolish the toilet lid! Still my overall experience was positive, staff very attentive and good at there jobs, so thank you.

Your waitress Zoe is a credit to your company .very polite and jolly always happy to help and Zoe's customer service is exellent . She's the only waitress I see who is really hard working and enjoying her job .

I came here for my sisters birthday, there was 14 of us. Food came out promptly, together and without issue, it was all hot and delicious with generous portions, so were the desserts! Staff were lovely and attentive despite it being very busy. 100% would recommend! See you again soon team coach! X

Walking into the pub should have given us a clue.Very dead plants in the tubsFound a table and ordered a bottle of wine and two steaks.Taking the wine and glasses back to the table discovered one of the glasses was covered in lipstick my wife took the glass back to the bar and was given a replacement with no apologies.The steaks arrived and were found to be very tough and not edible.We were offered a desert or a drink which we declined.We were then offered a refund..This was the only optionOverall experience was not good

They had incorrectly cooked my steak and the meal was taken back to the kitchen I was pleasantly surprised when the entire meal had been replaced. It was nice but by the time it came back I wasn't really that hungry after watching everyone else finish their meals.

Me and my family often eat at the coach and horses, we love the menu and the food is a scrummy! We have moved out of the area but still come to the coach and horses to eat at least once a month. Staff all friendly and helpful never had any issues :-)

Pretty shocking experience. Virtually no batter on the fish I had. Chips were alright, mushy peas are good but you’d expect that from a tin. Won’t be choosing this venue again. Front of house staff are more interested in chatting to each other than the customers. ‘Tilly’ seems to just hover around the bar. The bar was empty of customers at the time. We could hear service being called from the kitchen. Other staff were busy with other tables and after a few minutes of hearing our food being called she reluctantly went out back and brought it out. As a consequence the food wasn’t piping hot !!Not recommended

Tried popping in yesterday for some food with my wife. Pub was empty almost and queued toe be seated for a table for 10 minutes. Then went to bar where some little girl (not even sure if she was old enough to work there) served anyone and everyone in no order, so waited for a drink for 20 minutes. Staff were rude, short, useless and of a poor standard at best. This place has gone down hill massively! shame but won't be going back, cannot tolerate poor rude service for overpriced food! It's a zero for me, until Green King sort the staff and retrain then so they're competent!

Turned up and went inside to be promptly turned away. Could seat us they said as a big party was coming in later in the afternoon. NO board up outside the premises to this effect, nor any posters up inside.Not even offered a refund on car parking charges

Came for our daughters birthday we had booked a table for six and this hasn't been put in the book so a poor start had to ask for cutlery no condiments offered. One skillet didn't sizzle and the sirloin steak on it was more fat than steak .Overpriced poor small portion food poor service won't be back far better places to eat .

I’m writing this message now straight after being kicked out off this restaurant along with everyone in the establishment. We were just told out it the blue, you have 5 minutes until we close.

My wife and I made an impromptu visit yesterday for lunch after shopping. Our experience was a very pleasant one, that we'll certainly repeat in the future. All the staff were polite, kind and professional; we were served by a really friendly guy called Ryan, who could not have been more helpful. The Coach and Horses was very comfortably furnished, and not overly busy, the surroundings were quite intimate. There is a £1 (for 3hrs) car park charge - which is refunded from your order when you buy at the bar.

Great pub food, great prices, great staff & great atmosphere. Small parking just outside the pub. What more can you want?!

Had a nice meal 2 x Ribeye, 1 x Mix Grill and Gammon. All on sizzler plates and everyone happy.

Two steak and ale pies so over nuked the pastry was solid, my mash was fine but my husband's was over nuked so set in a rubbery lump and my sister's chicken was Brown ! All the salads came with a dressing so spicy we couldn't eat it, they did replace them but the replacements where also covered in a different dressing, it would have been better in a pot so we had the choice. They did offer to replace it all but we had waited so long due to a mix up with our order We decided to just skip straight to sundaes which where delicious. The two young ladies running everything where lovely, polite, professional and helpful despite clearly being under staffed.

Second time I have been for dinner and again did not disappoint, my steak was served to perfection, my G&T; was recommended by meg who was extremely knowledgeable and helped me pair my gin with my tonic. To top it of I would like to thank Ricky for the outstanding Halloween decs!! The best I’ve seen in a pub. The kids were in ore of them.

Visited last week for a great meal once again. The Halloween themed entrance was insane! Really add to the Halloween atmosphere and helped build the hype. Again, great quality food as always with welcoming and friendly staff. 10/10

Arrived at noon on a Saturday to find all but a couple of the tables were reserved (but empty). The menus were disgustingly dirty, all greasy and slimy - every single one of them! Ordered quickly and then waited nearly 40 minutes for our food, bearing in mind there were no other customers when we ordered. We had to take four out of five glasses back to the bar because they were dirty (not just dish washer residue, they were dirty). Food quality was OK, fries were nice, burger was average, chicken fajitas were an embarrassment. Burnt ends were not burnt ends at all, more like pulled beef. When we left at 1.25pm we were still the only customers apart from one table of two. So all those reserved tables had sat empty for the entire time. Very average, we won't be back.

Después de que me dijeron que había una espera de media hora en la comida, finalmente me sirvieron poco más de una hora después. Lo único que sabía bien eran las papas fritas, pero desafortunadamente estaban frías. El pastel que tenía mi compañero estaba empapado y salado, y mi combo de surf y césped era insípido, tanto el bistec como el pollo, y el scamp estaba empapado junto con las cebollas con las que se servía. Muy decepcionante y no volveré a comer allí.

Fue un estímulo de la visita del momento para el almuerzo en este establecimiento, el personal era amable y nos informaron de una espera de 45 minutos no es un problema. Verificamos el menú e hicimos nuestras selecciones (con un par de modificaciones). Primero ordenamos el gammon y pedimos que se eliminaran dos artículos y uno que se agregará muy decepcionantemente. Nos cobraron un extra por la suma adicional de las restas y no. mención del cargo extra! Mi amigo tenía un desierto y pidió dos veces que no hubiera crema y adivina qué vino con la crema. ¡Se intercambió sin problemas, pero sigue siendo una decepción para el evento! Las comidas eran muy agradables y el personal era amable, el servicio era un poco lento!

Tenía que empezar con los nachos, sin crema agria al preguntar dónde se decía que no tenían. Debería haber sido dicho al hacer el pedido. No me pregunta cuándo falta el plato. El combo de la fogata no vale el dinero, lo único que estaba caliente en el plato fueron las picaduras de pollo. No estaba tan ocupado allí, el bistec era duro, incluso el cuchillo tenía problemas para cortarlo.

Today (30th September) my husband, mother, 1 year old son and I went to the Coach and Horses for my birthday meal. We booked a table for 4.30pm so as to ensure our son wouldn't be eating too late. We were relieved to see it wasn't busy. We were seated a little later as our table wasn't ready when we arrived. We ordered our food at 4.48pm. The first meal didn't arrive until 5.36pm! Then the rest of our meals arrived at 5.45pm! We had waited an hour for our food. We had asked twice in this hour where our meals were and the waiter said each time it was a 35 min wait. Not an hour! My mother's meal was missing her mash potato. When my steak came it was supposed to be on a sizzle plate, the plate was cold, my tomato wasn't cooked, my mushrooms were so dry they were like crisps and my steak was completely inedible! The sharp knife wouldn't even cut through it. They also completely forgot my side dish. I asked to see the manager and we waited 15 more minutes until she arrived. When she did, she tried to shift the blame on to us! When I told her my steak was inedible she asked how I asked it to be cooked like I wanted it like that, medium is what I asked for. Even if I did ask for well done I'd at least expect to be able to cut it! When we said the time we had waited was unacceptable, especially as we now had a ratty baby who was eating far too late, she simply said "I thought I told you how long the wait would be when you ordered", she certainly didn't otherwise we would have left then! She eventually apologised and said it was because they had a large group coming in at 6 and they needed to prepare for them. Ok, but surely that doesn't mean you ignore all other customers in the mean time. She agreed to refund my meal (although we had to wait another 5 minutes for that to happen as she was busy) and we left. As we were leaving, 2 other couples left because of poor service too.

Everything about my experience was awful...service was slow....took over an hour for food and the place was empty....staff more concerned about chatting to their mates than serving customers....food rock hard...would never go back!

Staff were pleasant and helpful, service was a little slow at the till. Separate gluten free menu available. Meals were nice, had to ask a few times for butter, garlic bread got forgotten so had to remind them again, they did give us extra onion rings a an apologie.

Decided to meet a friend here for a weekday lunch and was served at the bar by very friendly staff. Unfortunately that’s where my positive comments end as the wait for food was almost 30 minutes. The food itself was very average and reflected the cheap price that we paid.

As this is the nearest place to us for a meal decided to visit for a meal after a long weekend. What a disappointment, was told half hour for order, eventually received food an hour later and everything was stone cold and sent back. After another half hour order was served again barely warm and steaks over cooked. Very disappointing from a major chain of pubs, and not the only customers demanding a full refund.

Really good experience. Not been here for a while but will definitely coming back. Ryan greeted us and showed us to a table. Lovely guy, nothing was too much trouble. Children's meal for our grandson was than enough but he ate every bit, dessert too! We also had two adult meals for £9.99, which were great value for money and really tasty. Thanks to Ryan for his professional and very friendly customer service...he was new but obviously being well trained - so thank you to the staff too. We will be back to sample the breakfast menu very soon.

Last time we went it was a disaster but they have more than redeemed themselves.

Had a great visit recently with my family. We were exhausted from shopping and site seeing but were able to relax and cater for a large party with complex needs. The manager was amazing and we ended up staying longer than expected just because of the teams attention
