Tasty lunch today. However the entire place is extremely haphazard. To enter the building one must queue in between the vegetable racks! Once inside there lies a labyrinth of stalls and tables. We sat upstairs where there is no toilet so we had to keep going up and down stairs. Food was tasty but menu very limited. No drinks or desserts menu, staff didn’t come to ask if we were enjoying food or more importantly if we’d like a pud! So we just got the bill and paid! The kitchen shop is nice enough but lots of generic stuff. All in all a pleasant experience but. It sure I would rush back .

They do gorgeous cakes here and you’re never rushed. Afterwards it’s great looking around their produce as their meat is fantastic. Pay a bit more but worth it as it is not filled with water like you can sometimes get in supermarkets

The café is a delight. Lovely staff. Nicely spaced tables. All safe, clean and yummy. In the shop however, there are no social distancing measures in place. No limit on customers piling into the store. It was an absolute crush of people. Be aware, Crathorne, lockdown boroughs are on your doorstep.

Called in today for a pork bun which are usually delicious, but today the man on the pies counter served me, really awful greasy fatty pork with the crackling all inside the sandwich, very sloppy and messy to eat, he didn’t even put it in a box like the girls usually do, so the bag all broke away , wouldn’t care l drove quite a bit out of my way to get one, but will try again another day.

We tried 5 Houses to support local business. We usually travel to Helmsley for our Thursday lunch but were delighted to give this a go. Just 10 minutes from home and we were served a tasty and inexpensive meal. Apparently they are serving a reduced menu due to Covid. I went for goat cheese salad......beautiful and my partner had the Hake which he said was very good. At £22 for the two we certainly weren't robbed. I intend to make 5 Houses a regular stop. Looking forward to the full menu bring reinstated.

Just left after a bitterly disappointing lunch. Only doing stuff from the deli which should have been fine but ended up being very average. A cheese & onion quiche that frankly I think they forgot to put the cheese in. Iceberg salad with a bit of onion & a couple of tiny tomatoes and crisps. No coleslaw. Hubby had sausage bun. Again would have thought they would have come from their own butchery. If they did they were not the finest. Had to ask for sugar, s&p & then cutlery! Have eaten here a couple of times before and it’s always been good. Covid should not make a difference to the quality of their cafe food. Farm shop as amazing as ever. Although a bit pricey.

The award winning pork pies are superb here the very best in my (and others )opinion I visit every week to shop for them and also other items from the shop, also the vegetables here are of the highest quality with a huge vaiety of seasonable fresh produce if you want to taste a REAL tomato whilst in season this is the place to buy, it is well worth a visit if in the locality.i have read some other recent reviews and to be honest I have to say that I have always found the hard working staff always to be very friendly and pleasant

We visited this establishment on Tuesday August 18th 2020. We have been here on other occasions and we really love Kitsons pies. Staff in the shop were very pleasant. Having made our purchases, and finding the cafe quiet, we decided to have some lunch. The cafe was COVID safe and we had no issues so far. The disappointment came when we found that they were not participating in the ‘eat out to help out’ scheme. As we were hungry and prepared to eat we carried on. The food (quiche, salad and crisps) was very nice but a little expensive. My coffee was so weak you could see the bottom of the cup through it and It tasted like hot water with milk in it. The staff seemed a little tired but were otherwise pleasant. I cannot understand why they are not part of the scheme and I feel it is a bit shortsighted as the food is pretty bog standard and is equally as good as other establishments who are part of the scheme. I don’t think we will be going again.

The place may look posh and the delicatessen stocks some nice items, but it doesn’t quite live up to expectations. A sausage bun for £4 and a soft drink for £2.50!Now, IF you are going to charge these ridiculous prices, at least make an effort!! The sausage bun was literally dripping with grease. So sodden that the ciabatta roll was soggy. Also the soft drink wasn’t even cold!!Also, the attitude of the staff is particularly poor and rude. Common courtesy costs nothing, but in business means so much. You may have increased prices post lockdown, if you do, then increase quality and service to match!

Visited here before and it has always been lovely, however today it was totally different. The attitude of the waitress was awful, I asked if I could see the menu and she said ‘no, we are literally only serving coffee and cake’. That was ok by us as that is what we went in for, there was no forthcoming information from the waitress (who just walked away from us) of what coffees or cakes were available.I wasn’t sure if it was waitress service and to be honest I didn’t really want to have another surly encounter so ordered at the till and we took a seat indoors. We quickly swapped that for an outdoor seat as the amount of flies flying around and crawling over everything was disgusting and if we hadn’t already ordered we would have left.Sitting outside was ok, the cakes were nice (hoping that the flies had not been near them!) but the coffee was basically a cup of warm milk with just enough coffee to turn the milk a nice shade of beige.Won’t be going back, expensive and not worth us feeling like we are putting the staff out by actually going in to support the business!

We visited yesterday to support local shops. I was in the outdoor vegetable display and a staff member was on the phone taking an order in the doorway. I waited for him to move but he didn't, just indicated I should push past him.Once in the shop I was waiting for a customer in front of me to move on, leaving the required 2 metre gap and a member of staff just came between us to reach the shelves. The veg we bought are great and the pork pie was very popular but keeping safe is No 1. priority just now.

Whilst there was clearly a choice for some British meat, it was a struggle to find pork that wasn't sourced from the EU, and fresh chicken labelled produce of the EU. With a lot of the other meat and pies lacking country of origin on the label we left without making a purchase. Its worrying that a local butchers has a worse selection of fresh British meat than the supermarkets.

Like many of the items at 5 Houses, prices are pushed as far as the local market can stand. A slice of 1/6 th of a plate sized quiche, a few salad leaves and a small basket of skinny chips for £8.50 is having a laugh, if they were in Billingham or Hartlepool, they wouldn't last a week.

It was busy when we visited. People eating the breakfasts (sausages particularly) looked to have tasty plates but unfortunately it was past 1130 so not available. Friend enjoyed her salad. My sandwich only seemed to have filling right in the middle of it so I could cut off a good couple of cms of bread the whole way round with nothing in it. Beef filling was tasty. Salad was swimming in an oil dressing and had a pickled taste to it and wasn't pleasant. Not worth the £10 price tag. Waiter was hovering to take plates away even though we were both nibbling and sharing the chips.Cheesecake was tasty, chocolate cake was ok and could have done with some cream to go with it.Sadly a bit disappointing.

I'm not going to lie, we have been here a few times and it was good but today was incredibly disappointing and either shows standards have slipped or they simply were trying it on now they have a good reputation. Firstly tried to squeeze as many people in as possible even splitting the tiny tables to add more people. Then ordered a chicken sandwich special which was £10. The bread slices were huge! The filling minimal in proportion to the bread ( remember this is a £10 sandwich) the chicken was overcooked leg meat which hadn't been pulled through properly and just shabby to be honest. Who puts scraggy meat in a £10 sandwich??? I ate what I could, (as I was hungry) but said something at the end to the server. Then was told they use leg meat as its "juicier". To be honest this was really just insulting to think I'm that daft, no you dont use it as its nicer for a sandwich, a £10 sandwich! you used it to be cheap and get a higher mark up on the meal!!!. You clearly just tried it on and cheaping out has made me question if it's worth going back, I'd get a better standard at a fast food chicken shop !

Recommended by a friend for lunch as a nice place to go! BUT what an understatement. It's a great place to go for food. Set back from the road, nestled away from the madding crowd, we were taken aback by how popular it was. Plenty of parking though when we went you had to look for a parking spot as it was busy. Fresh veg on offer as you go in, then a counter where you can buy hot pies & cooked meat such as beef & gammon. Then a deli area where you can buy pies ready for the oven, or oven ready meals, fresh meat, cheeses etc. Then a butchers counter for fresh meats. Oh wow, just round the corner as you continue your journey there are tables to sit & eat. Plenty of room with an upstairs table service area too.Staff all very polite, cheery folk who just wanted to help. Now, the food - well, we loved it. Reasonably priced & of good quality - very tasty too! I could go on but I've gone on too much already.Great place - go & try it for yourself, I'm sure you won't regret it.

After visiting a few times and recommending to friends for a nice place to have lunch, I was very disappointed when I ordered a vegetarian quiche to then be given the wrong one. The waiter even described it was the vegetarian quiche when he placed it on the table. After taking a bite it was clear there was bacon or ham in it and then the wait began to find a member of staff. The waitress that I told looked very shocked and scuttled away very quickly. I was then presented with the correct meal shortly after and was apologised to by the waiter. Much to my surprise the meal was still showing on the bill and when I mentioned it at the till, I was asked “oh, was that you?” and “are you actually vegetarian?” then “did you take a bite?”, to which I answered yes. The half hearted apology that followed made it clear they had no intention of offering any kind of gesture of goodwill. To add to this, the coffee was very disappointing and lacked any real flavour and my friend’s steak sandwich was more onion than steak and even though she barely touched it, the wait staff didn’t even ask if there was anything wrong.

Five Houses is our go-to lunch destination in North Yorkshire. The food is remarkable - from exquisite, delicate fish dishes to wholesome, filling platters and pies, locally sourced. The location is beautiful especially in the summer in the walled courtyard (dogs welcome) and the service is great as the staff are warm, knowledgable and professional - helping to give the place the feel of somewhere much more exclusive. This was our first visit to Five Houses as the car park has always previously been too full to park. We had seen the farm shop and cafe from across the fields at Crathorne Hall Hotel and often remarked that we should visit. We were not disappointed. On a hot sunny day, it was light and bright indoors, and one of the staff kindly reserved a table for us until an older member of the family was able to take up his seat. Tasty soup, lovely fresh fruit scones, and decent coffee were all we had time for on this visit, but the menu looked tempting, so I'm sure we shall return. Just one point we thought could be improved, and that was the charge of £3 for a scone and butter (the same charge as for scone with cream & jam), which seems a bit steep. Overall though, a very enjoyable visit.

We visited here for the first time on a sunny Saturday afternoon at 1pm. The car Park was full when we arrived and we had to wait for someone to leave before we could park up. We headed straight to the restaurant and choose to sit outside as it was lovely weather. The restaurant was already full but we expected this from the car park. We opted for the burger and five house platter. You decide what you want then go and order inside with your table number and pay. We had a bit of a wait for the food and queried this when a number of people that arrived after us were eating before us the waitress checked this out and there had been a little mix up in the kitchen this was then sorted and our food arrived not long after. The food was really nice and we want to return to try something else. After our food we had a quick look round the farm shop which is quite small but has lots of products. We would recommend here and will be returning.

We go to the farm shop at least 3 times a month to stock up on their amazing pies and cooked meats. Also eat in the restaurant quite often which is always busy and the standard of the food is first class. Family run business and it shows in the care and attention shown to customers. Absolutely love the place.

We came for breakfast/brunch, never visited before but Five Houses came highly recommended, I do hope the next time we visit it’s better.Got seated straightaway and ordered food, when asked if we needed anything I asked for a glass of water and then when the food came, requested some sauce when asked. We both ate our food and left before both were brought out, so in effect I am still waiting for it.I wouldn’t normally mind as it was busy, however it’s the attention to detail that is missing, the food was ok, coffee was nice.No one asked us if everything was ok, the waitress cleared our plates away whilst talking to the customers on the table next adjacent, didn’t even acknowledge us. Shop is great, lots of amazing foods.

Had coffee and a bacon buttie on Monday with my husband and sister and her husband very enjoyable but it got very noisy as room was quite small they had a lovely courtyard seating area weather permitting they had no serviettes on table which I found quite odd as based on star rating thought that would have been a norm also no knifes given with the bacon buns , there is also a farm shop reasonably priced bought two pork pies and two generous size quiche slices yummy.

Had a couple of Full Yorkshire’s this morning and we will not need to eat again until tonight. Very filling and lovely ingredients well cooked. The cafe and shop have a great selection of cakes, pastries and all sorts to tempt you and the butchers and veg shop is excellent. This is a very good business for the area and on a wet Tuesday morning it was heaving, which is brilliant to see :-)

Recommended by a friend to call in for a coffee. This place is much more than a meeting cafe, it’s a full blown shop selling farm produce of high quality, have purchased the hot meat cooked on the premises which you can buy. The gammon is delicious. Very friendly helpful staff. You will not be disappointed.

We popped in for a late lunch on a recommendation from friends. Staff were attentive without being obtrusive and the dishes ordered came in the time one would expect for freshly cooked. I had their Kitsons burger and my wife had veggie quiche. Both were well presented and delicious. Glad we have at last visited and we will most certainly visit again.

Visited here twice recently to sample the café. It's fairly local and had heard fabulous reviews for it. It certainly didn't fail to deliver!Apprehensive to leave such a good review as this place is already very popular, however, credit where credit's due!Setting, location and premises are all lovely. Food was delicious, fresh and quality ingredients. Portion sizes are very generous too. Staff were friendly and welcoming. All in all a great place to visit. Will definitely be back and recommend to others without hesitation. Think they may need to extend though, it's extremely popular!Thank you Kitson's for an enjoyable experience and delicious food.

We have been to this restaurant many times- sometimes twice a week !. Until this spring we were always delighted with the food and the ambiance. Unfortunately recently we have had meals that fell short of the original standard. Presentation not as good ,poor side salads with no dressing to speak of, over cooked dry meat and shell fish. Some of these problems have probably originated from the popularity of the restaurant and staff having less time, however if standards are not upheld Trade will be lost. Also the butchery prices have risen and we are now buying in Stokesley Such a shame. Hopefully high standards will return.

I’ve been here before: geographically and metaphorically. A new entrant in the food market starts well and then drops its standards ever so slightly (not enough to truly disappoint but sufficiently so to fall short of expectations). Next time it’s Roots for me. Or Hart’s in Boston Spa.

Called for lunch today and the place was heaving but after only a short wait were led to a lovely table at the front of the building. Good standard menu but also some lovely special dishes to choose from and being butchers by trade I opted for one of their terrific steak pies with chips and fresh vegetables in a lovely gravy whilst my wife chose the burger with salad and fries and both were delicious. No room sadly for any of their super cakes on offer so maybe next time. Excellent friendly staff and a pleasure to visit with a lovely courtyard for outside dining as well, together with a shop and takeaway food service.

We have been to 5 houses quite a lot and usually the food is excellent we had for the first time burgers three of us the chips were cold and they change them .when we started on the burger that also was cold but we waited a long time so we just ate it after we paid we did tell the waitress who then told the chef he looks very cross that we had dared to say his food is cold ,

This was our first visit after recommendations from friends. We were not disappointed. We were shown upstairs as the downstairs was getting very busy (11.40am). It was waitress service and the staff were very friendly. I ordered the chicken and avocado sandwich which was served on ciabatta with a salad and skinny fries. The hubby went for the braised beef sandwich which also was on ciabatta with salad and fries. My hubby also ordered a fruit scone which, when it came, was the biggest scone we had ever seen. It came with clotted cream and jam. The food could not be faulted. It was absolutely delicious and we will definitely be back very soon.

Some of my friends have eaten here before so thought they’d take me.The main course was lovely. We had quiche salad and it was very nice. Some of us decided on a dessert. I went downstairs to have a look at the choices. Saw a lovely fudge cake, a bit like a Victoria sponge. So our choices were taken. When they arrived my dessert wasn’t right. The waitress said that it was what I’d ordered and was keen for me to have it. So I took her downstairs and showed her the cake, which was marked ‘Fudge Cake - may contain nuts’. I don’t think she was pleased that I was right, as it showed her I had ordered correctly and by the way she spoke to the other staff to rename the dessert she is possibly in charge. Our original waitress was lovely and would eat here again but marked it low because of her attitude.

Cosy and friendly little cafe attached to the Millbry Hill shop but with its own entrance looking out over the bridge and the River Leven in Stokesley. Would definitely recommend the cheese scones.

We were staying at Hunton on holiday and wanted a local cafe so that we didn’t have to drive too far, ‘The Nest’ did not disappoint. What an incredible location, really friendly staff and gorgeous scones. Given that my Mum made thousands of them when we had a restaurant (and hers were always delicious), she gave 10/10 for the cherry one and I’d give the same rating for my yummy cheese one. If you like scones, stunning views and cute animals, this is the place for you!

I've always liked Barkers. It reminds me of the old-fashioned department stores my mum used to drag me around when I was a nipper. Although I didn't relish the prospect all those decades ago, I've developed an appreciation of such a fast disappearing establishment as I've matured. My wife and I live a fair distance away, but we've visited many times over the past 30 years. I'll always remember my wife buying a Phase 8 dress for our oldest daughters wedding in 2007. The choice of products available is impressive, and I've always found the service to be equal to it. Our family will be unwrapping numerous articles on Christmas day that have passed across one of the many counters.

Can’t fault the strawberry picking, but the cafe had ran out of all sorts by 2pm. Pizza’s totally overpriced for the size of them and took ages to be cooked. I appreciate the are cooked fresh on a pizza oven but waiting over half an hour with small, hungry children is not ideal. Ordered a ‘meat’ pizza which was in fact just pepperoni, why it isn’t just advertised as being pepperoni I have no idea. The pizza edges were burnt to a crisp (inedible) not the best experience overall won’t be in a rush to return.

I came here with mam for a cuppa, though partly because another place up the street had closed - at half 2! This is a nice little place with disabled access and a mixed toilet, which I didn't have an issue with. They had just stopped serving food when we got there but we weren't hungry anyway after a cooked breakfast at Mainsgill on the A66.
