We were tempted into what looked like a lovely bakery cafe from the outside, but we were left wishing we'd chosen somewhere else. We manged to find a table, but it was full of the last diners plates etc, which nobody came to clear. We ended up moving them to another empty table which had what looked like 4 tables worth of dirty dishes piled up on it - it was at least 20 minutes before someone cleared it. We ordered 2 pasties and 2 cans of pop (only Fanta or diet coke to choose from). We waited a good 15 minutes or more before our canned drinks arrived at our table and another 5 minutes for our 2 pasties. The staff looked like they'd rather be anywhere else. One out of two toilets was out of order. Towards the back of the cafe there was lots of chairs, a hoover and a fan taking up what could have been more table space and making it look untidy. Very disappointing as it could have been lovely. The cakes looked very nice but we just couldn't face waiting another 20 minutes for a cake to be put on a plate!

Staff were extremely miserable and unfriendly. The whole experience felt uncomfortable. Only nipped in for a takeaway. Won’t be returning.

I’m afraid I have to agree with the many negative reviews here. The girl serving this morning could not have been more disinterested and miserable. I asked if the scones could be warmed up. ‘No.’ On the wall is a stencilled list of various coffees, including Americano. There is no other menu nor a list on the counter. I asked for an Americano with hot milk. ‘A white coffee then.’ I had to clear a table myself then there was nowhere to put the dirty crockery. I ended up placing it on the counter and the other lady working there seemed cross about that too. The coffee was very weak, and the scone, although it looked good, turned out to be stodgy and tasteless. The ladies’ toilets were ‘temporarily closed’ but if you read back through these reviews, they appear to have been so for months. Next time I’ll try another of Buxton’s many cafes.

Only called in to get a takeaway coffee whilst on a fleeting visit to Buxton. Friendly enough service and coffee was OK. The traditional looking bakes and pastries looked good.

I have to agree with the poor reviews on here. Tables needed clearing when we visited, and the staff couldn't cope with serving customers at lunchtime - maybe they are short-staffed? We sat at a dirty table in hope, but then it was announced that service would stop for 10 minutes so that they could catch up - how ridiculous with a place full of lunchtime customers 🙄. We went down the street to Stars instead, where we had delicious food & excellent service!

Tried this place for the second time today. The first time, we asked the scowling older lady behind the counter if we could come in for a meal and the terse response was ‘depends what you want.’ I explained that my daughter was vegetarian and I’d eat anything and was told they couldn’t accommodate, so we left and went elsewhere. Today I thought I’d give them a second chance. We walked in and was told to sit at a table and decide what to have before ordering at the counter. Myself and my daughter cleaned off one of several tables that were still strewn with the last occupants crockery and then realised there wasn’t a menu on any table. Another couple who had just walked in were also looking for a menu. I told them I’d get them one from the counter. I went up to the counter, someone decided to take the table we had just cleaned off and I was then told that they don’t have a menu! Huh? A cafe without menus? There were some items written on a board, that was behind some customers queuing for takeout. The staff were too busy and miserable to help any further, so we went and won’t be back again. The worst experience of a cafe I’ve ever been in. Terrible visit on both occasions. Do they not read their reviews and try to make positive changes?

So expensive since we were last here £6.50 for soup with 2 rolls (that made me chuckle) dirty, plates were not cleaned from table next to us, it was empty, female loos closed had to use men's, bought a Bake well tart £4.60, was a full tart, looked lovely but just had it and it's so dry, missing ground almonds I think, was a great cafe 2 years ago, busy, staff still grumpy lookin, reasonable and lovely food

Place wasn’t the cleanest, we had to clear plates off a table ourselves in order to sit down. Food was okay and drinks but one lady serving was really mardy, they refused customers to eat in at one point because they had no cups or crockery clean and were a bit abrupt. Can’t see us coming back again.

I don't recognise this cafe from previous reviews ! Yes, the female servers are to the point but efficient as there always seemed to be a queue. I can reply to one poor reviewer that "takeaway" does not mean sitting outside at their chairs and tables. Anyhow, we had lovely freshly-baked baps on two days with generously filled bacon and sausage, and very reasonably priced too. Their custard slices are lovely.

Visited this afternoon wish my family and I had spent our hard earned money elsewhere. Rude staff didn't seem to know what they were doing .The Cakes /scones we had were dry and the flat white tasted like water. There was 1 toilet open for men and no toilet paper in it the ladies and the disabled toilet was shut .I asked one of the older members of staff for toilet paper politely and she nearly bit my head off and shouted I will sort it in a bit! I REALLY WOULDN'T RECOMMEND THIS PLACE !!!

You have got to try their traditional pasties. The pastry is bang on. Nice peppery filling. Great for picnics when out on walks. We had several in our 4 days in Buxton, and brought a few home.

Went in to eat, ordered , fantastic large bacon baps, tea, and coffee . Then it got busy. But people were not prepared to wait! One couple ordered paid and we're told that it might be a 20 to 30 minutes wait and walked out even after being offered a refund, they just went! We enjoyed our baps and the trip to Buxton. Would recommend this cafe to anyone with patients.

Horrible rushed and overly hot /stuffy atmosphere. I asked for a coffee and pastie to sit outside, but was told it was more expensive to "takeaway" would have thought the other way round?? £5. 45, total- the salty pasty advertised at £3.35, making the week coffee with uht milk £3.10. Waited over 20 minutes for food once ordered, which is too long.

Absolutely loved it, nice staff one of which very young, smiley, attentive and with great potential I thought. The other lady keeping things going smooth with the constant flow of people. Having worked in hospitality myself, I very much know the background of such a business and appreciate the efforts a lot. Can’t understand the awful reviews, luckily they’re all rather old therefore likely to be no reflection of the current staff. Will return!

I bought two cakes which were on display and looked quite tempting. I bought them as locally baked items instead of buying supermarket cakes. One was a ginger parkin the other a lemon drizzle. Both were dreadful. The ginger Parkin had some trace of cinnamon but little more in the way of flavour. The lemon drizzle had a smear of inferior lemon curd on top of a substandard Madeira. No other indication of lemon. Both cakes gave the impression of being part their sell by date. I may have tasted poorer quality cakes. If so I don’t remember when.

Me and my son were queuing to order food to sit inside (we've never eaten in before due to covid). Whilst the queue was wuite long my 4 year old son said he was desperate for the toilet so i said we will run quickly before we ordered. I was stopped by alls i can describe is a vile old woman - i think her name was Karen (name suits). She started barking at me that i csnt use the toilet as they are for cafe customers only. I advised her thats what i was but she kept saying we couldn't use them. We went any but then as we were waiting i decided against using their filthy toilets and decided to go to gregs where you get much better service. I rang to speak with the manager butngot this vile lady again who accused me of absuing her over the phone as i callled to complain about her. She slammed the phone down on me 3 times. I will be calling to complain. DONT WASTE YOUR TIME GOING THERE. VILE SERVICE.

We came for a breakfast buttie and coffee and it was spot-on. Nice fresh soft cobs, plenty of bacon, well cooked and tasty. I think the latte was machine coffee, but not bad at all and a reasonable strength. Great choice of cakes as well, and the staff were really pleasant and friendly. Will go again.

We returned here because last time the food and the service was OK, nothing special but satisfactory. How its gone down! Twenty minutes we've been sat here with no effort whatsoever to clear the last customers pots and rubbish off the table. It's not as if they don’t know it's here as all the five staff have looked over and seen it, yet no action. Must be difficult to walk the 12 foot to our table. Incredible they have just brought our order over still without clearing the table (leaving us to clear the table ourselves), half the order is missing and the two coffees and Luxery Hot Chocolate drinks are anything but hot. I've asked for the manager who has offered to sort the order out but we would have to wait 45 minutes for my wife's meal so either I eat mine and, she eats alone or I wait and eat mine cold. I asked and was given my money back and we left which can only be described as fair considering the extremely poor service.

It seems this is a popular cafe with locals but I probably wouldn't go back. There were a lot of (young?) staff behind the till who seemed knowledgeable, but no-one at all in the customer area. As a result tables went uncleared for a long time, tables weren't wiped down at all and the floor was unchecked. I saw a customers dog come in and eat all the droppings from the previous child before the owner could stop him. Considering the high number of staff, service was also very slow as others have mentioned, even for simple or straightforward items; we saw several customers ask who were still waiting. Our lunch was fine when we got it and the food seemed okay, and to be fair it had no shortage of people coming in. What put me off most was that the whole customer area needed a really proper clean, not just tables but wall decor, seating, floors, front window areas. I realise not everyone sees this but for me this is an important first impression as well as necessary hygiene in a food establishment.

We loved our lunch here, and the service was excellent! It was a big contrast with another place we tried earlier, where they halted service for 10 minutes in order to "catch up" - how ridiculous! We were made to feel welcome at Stars, despite it being busy, and couldn't fault our delicious food, at a good price too 😋. They're missing a trick by not having Buxton pudding on the menu though - surely we're not the only people who like to sample local specialities when visiting a place for the first time?
