As we are fairly local, we use Compass Cafe as a lunchtime stop. Fantastic food and layout, however, the reason we have marked it 3 is that the staff have a management issue. Don’t know what country most of the staff originate from, but they should not be speaking in their native language in loud voices in front of customers - a huge hospitality ‘no-no’.

Dry, uninteresting pancakes, no butter offered, a drizzle of maple syrup and two rashers of bacon. Woefully under satisfying. Two dry pieces of toast, no butter offered, one rasher of bacon, a single slice of cheese and a fried egg. Difficult to eat as dry and uninteresting, and disappointing. How can you get pancakes and a breakfast sandwich so wrong? Clearly prepared by those who don't understand how to produce appetising and tasty food. You can do better Tiso!

Asked for a menu and rudely ignored and then as menu was about to be given to me by one staff member the other snapped that there was only cakes available (3.30pm - fair enough). However , ordered 2 cups of tea and 2 small cakes - £14!! Then approached at table by staff member with jacket on who said she wanted to go home but the cafe needed to be empty… so then we were kicked out! Expensive and poor service, won’t be back.

We ordered a Bacon and egg roll and an Avocado sandwhich. We waited for 45m and no food. A couple came in after us, ordered and got their food before us. We decided to leave and just pay for the two teas that came fairly quickly. The lady made the excuse the wifi wasnt working, didnt even apologise. No Excuse - could have used a pen and paper. Really poor service.👎

I’m traditionally a big fan of the Tiso cafes but not on this occasion. We stopped en-route to the Black Isle and ordered 2 drinks, a breakfast roll & a pancake stack. The drinks were done & dusted, & a distant memory before we enquired about our food taking so long. Apologies were offered & 5 minutes later an OK breakfast roll arrived as did a stack of lukewarm not-fresh pancakes with a fridge-cold banana, honey & yoghurt. £8.25 for pancakes - maybe even yesterday’s? - I could have bought from a supermarket for £1. The cafe is now run by Compass & it doesn’t bode well.

We went here for breakfast and quite frankly we won’t go back. The lady who I think was in charge today made various sarcastic comments about our dog who is still quite young. We were shown to a table out of the way as she said you’ve got a dog. Fair enough. At one point she came to the table and he sat up and put a paw on the table and she said “training’s going well” . Another time when she appeared he sensed someone was at the table and he came out from lying down under the table and briefly hopped onto the bench seat beside my daughter. We immediately told him to get off which he did. A comment was made of “oh do you do that home?” We were always quick to correct him and he wasn’t a nuisance. He was quiet and friendly and other customers came over to pat him. Another comment she made was “he’s cute really, even though…” We don’t allow our dog to put paws on the table at home and we take him to dog training where he’s actually doing ok. We just felt unwelcome here from the start. The cafe advertises as dog friendly as they say they’re part of the family but this staff member obviously would rather dogs weren’t there. I left a small tip as I always do but I really shouldn’t have. We’ll stick to The Tickled Trout who really do welcome dogs.

The menu looks good on paper, but in reality it has a way to go. I opted for the "5 bean vegan chilli with rice and tortilla chips" and a black americano coffee. Coffee was OK but incredibly strong so had to ask fora jug of hot water. Veg chilli came very quickly but alas the chilli part was barely warm so I asked for it to be properly heated. When it came back it was still not really hot enough, but the rice was scalding and tortilla chips were rather darker at the edges than they had been. So the whole plate had been in the microwave; plate and rice pretty hot, chilli not! However i decided to risk it...and whilst it was clearly homemade and the flavour wasn't bad...it was almost completely devoid of beans never mind the 5 varieties (I assume!) that were being offered. I counted 7 chickpeas in the whole thing and so I did actually mention it to the waitress, who couldn't quite believe it and said she'd ask in the kitchen. However I was actually laughing (she wasn't) as i told her that this was quite funny as it has happened to me before in a different cafe that the 5 bean chili had literally 5 beans in it and so now it's a family joke. Anyway, on paying the bill a different person asked if it had all been ok so I told her that I'd mentioned the non- bean situation to my waitress, and so this new person did actually take a couple of quid off my bill, which i thanked her for. (the Mars Bar crispy cake was fine!)

We have visited this cafe lots of times over the years but the standard is poor now. Food was very expensive and the plates were sparse. Cucumber slices in side salad were dry and going brown- poor quality produce. Soup was okay but lacking seasoning and love. It used to be a great cafe but standard are poor and cosy is high

We tend to stop here for a quick bite to eat on our way down from the Highlands and have a wee rest before continuing our drive. We have come here for years but lately have noticed it is becoming very over priced for what is on offer with erratic service. Her manner is open and direct, which is capable of being misunderstood, but you can easily see how well she gets on with customers. All the staff work really hard and the service is well organised and efficient. It’s a great place to visit so please give it a shot. It’s also in a large open space, which has been ideal over the pandemic.

Called in for a coffee to decide on what Christmas presents to get from Tiso. Really unpleasant experience with female staff member. On arrival I asked to sit at table with comfy seats and view over shop. Was told these were 6 person tables and not for couples. When I pointed out that 2 tables were free and the other 2 tables already had couples sat at them, the staff member said it was lunch time and there was about to be a rush. I said that the places was not busy and it was 11:20 and we’d be left before lunch. This only made the female staff member even more abrupt and unfriendly. I felt very self conscious to be having this conversation in front of all the other customers who were now watching and listening to this debate. We left feeling we had been treated unreasonably by a rude and unfriendly by a middle aged, dark haired female staff member with an Eastern European accent. I have used this cafe numerous times and bought lots of kit in Tiso, when heading to and from the Cairngorms but will not to calling again. A really rude and embarrassing encounter.

This place doesn’t even deserve a 1 but it’s the lowest score I could give them. I’ve never been so embarrassed ever by the most rude lady ever!!!! Called in for a lite bite just after 11am. Very quiet and loads of tables free. There were 4 number 6 seater tables, 2 were taken with 2 couples and the others were free but had been used by couples as the tables needed to be cleared. Lots of other tables for 2s and 4s available. But these were the best views looking out over the shop. But this “lady” a dark haired foreign National wouldn’t let us sit here as there were only 2 of us. There were already 2 sets of couples using 2 of the other 6 seater tables. She needed these tables for lunchtime rush……it was 11.20am…. My husband went back to reason with her and explain that we were only going to be 20 minutes and showed her how the cafe wasn’t busy, but she got very vocal in front of all the other customers. We’ve called here in numerous occasions, as it’s a great outdoor shop, and one of our favourites. But I have never been spoken to ever in that way. This is also a very poor reflection on Tiso even though this cafe is ran independently to them. It would put us off shopping here also. I’m sorry I didn’t ask the “lady” her name, but she’s a dark haired foreign National, and she’ll know exactly who she is. I never want to step foot in here again!!!

Oh dear! What has happened to this place? Last time we were there (a year or so ago) the food was great - but no more. We stopped for a quick bite on our way north and my wife asked for pancakes with syrup and coffee. When the pancakes arrived they were impossibly dry and doughy (frozen beforehand?) and it would have taken a forensic specialist to find any syrup on them. My wife left the whole plate. The cappuccinos were bitter and undrinkable. Presumably cutback orders from management, but they've lost four customers anyway. Shame.

I asked the waitress who checked with the Chef and apparently they have used margarine, not butter in their sandwiches for the past 2 years. How bizarre. It's disgusting stuff. Please change to butter, or at least give customers the option of a reasonable alternative. This margarine tasted cheap and spoiled an otherwise good roast beef sandwich.

Came across this place by accident. Only wanted to pop into Tiso, but once my nephew saw the soft play that was us for an hour so decided to have lunch too!It was very very busy when we arrived but the manager managed to find us a table for 4 plus room for a high chair. Yes, it is table service, not quite sure why as you can easily order, pay for your food and then get them to bring it over. However, it works and we enjoyed a range of paninis between us and a large fruit scone. My sister had to ask a question regarding her nut allergy and the chef himself came out to speak to her wanting to make sure he got the order right. The staff were friendly and polite, mostly very young and still learning (this may be because we were there on a Saturday) but the manager was around and came over a few times to make sure everything was ok. Visited by myself as I had a couple of hours to kill. I've been before and was able to order at the counter but was advised it was table service. Sat down and waited around ten minutes for the waitress to bring a menu. She firstly complained about there being 'so many people here today' - it had been open for approximately an hour and a half and s handful of tables were occupied. She then slammed a menu down in front of me and immediately asked 'do you know what you want!' I asked for a coffee as I quickly scanned the menu as she practically sat on my shoulder, she gave me around 5 seconds before she said 'do you want something to eat?' I felt so harassed that I just said no thank you, although I didn't manage to read even half of it, and she whipped the menu away and disappeared without another word. I eventually received my coffee. I later witnessed another waitress rubbing her nose with gusto before preparing food and drinks with her unwashed hands. Delightful.

Another in our company had to go and get her own ketchup. The till system seemed to be taking so long or didn't accept us paying individually but ended up paying together to save time. He didn't seem to know how to react; stumbled through and apology but there was no offer for replacement for either of the items. When going to pay we complained to the cashier (who also happened to be the original waitress). There was a brief apology which we were underwhelmed with, before she asked what method of payment we would use. We regularly visit this outlet and know they can do better. Soup sounded appealing but had to return it for reheating. Taste was not wholesome.Waitress was unclear when I asked her about bread options as accompaniment. I opted for granary style. This was a heel chunk of very dry bread. And another thing. Why are you serving me water in a jar with a handle, and a straw? Please. You can't really top a glass of water.I know some folk write whinging reviews as a hobby. I don't do reviews usually, but this lunch experience was dire, actually. Will anyone sort it? (Mine isn't the only poor review).

Upstairs from the giant Tiso store on the edge of Perth. Great coffee. Good selection of cakes and buns and variously filled baked potato, panini and sandwishes. Several vegetarian options. But sorry - didn't think much of the new festive horsechestnut and mushroom filling.

We have eaten here several times in the past, the last time being a year ago! I chose the soup as usual and looked forward to it as it was chunky vegetable broth. However, when it was served most of the soup was barley - I found 2 or pieces of carrot and a couple of pieces of leek - not what I would describe as chunky vegetable - in my opinion, it ought to have been called barley soup! It was served with one piece of bread and I had to ask for butter. My husband's ciabatta was better and I complained about the soup so wasn't charged! I believe the chef has changed since our last visit - I was very disappointed!

My wife and I called in here midway through a long drive home. I don't know what I was expecting but It certainly wasn't table service. We were quickly shown to a table. I asked the waiter what soup was available and was told that there was no soup left. We had intended to have Soup and a Sandwich. We were then left for just over 10 minutes before the same waiter came to take our order. I pointed out that I'd seen soup being served to diners who has come in after us. I asked the waiter to check again, amazingly Cream of Cauliflower soup was now available, hmm, However, we decided to just have a sandwich, Cheese & Pickle toasted and Egg and Mayo, both were fine, our sandwiches were accompanied by coffee, which again was fine. However, I wouldn't visit again, the service wasn't all that I would have desired and I still can't fathom our why there was no soup and then there was? Seating note try to avoid the far end of the dining area, unless you have children as it overlooks the children's play area and can be quite noisy.

This is a wee cafe type arrangement based in Tiso. There's a great variety of food based around sandwiches/panini/wrap/baked potato. Good range of drinks and bakes too. It's regularly busy and service can vary a little at peak times, but you can always pop up to the counter to speed things along. Staff are typically friendly and food is lovely and fresh. A great wee stop if you're on a North/South journey on the A9 or if you need refuelled before heading into Perth proper.

We visited here 10 months ago. I gave it 5 stars. Lovely food, busy eatery and decent staff. We thought we'd return today and it is just awful.Sat down and were given menus. Gone are the burgers and the French platter that we'd raved about on our previous visit. All on offer is soup, various forms of sandwich and a baked potato. We were disappointed with the selection but hungry. We had to call a waitress to ask what the specials were. Some chilli panini type thing and the soup was lentil or potato and leek. We ordered a ham sandwich for our son, one of each of the soups on offer, a cheese and ham toastie and a chicken and avocado panini. Drinks of water and Diet Coke.Drinks came first. All warm so returned for cold ones. Can I have some ice please? No, sorry we've run out (on a Saturday lunchtime!). Drinks came with plastic cups whereas other tables had glasses. Ham sandwich for our son was just that, 2 slices of verging on stale bread (decent ham though) and one piece of cucumber and one quarter of a tomato.Lentil soup was reasonable. If I weren't so hungry it would have been returned for being lukewarm. Leek and potato soup was vile and couldn't be eaten by either of us having swapped around. Toastie had a miserable amount of filling and the panini was tiny. Staff had no interest at all and didn't even ask why a full bowl of soup wasn't eaten. What have you done to your menu? We were thrilled with our first visit and were really looking forward to stopping in today. For half the price we should have gone to Marks and Soencer and eaten in the car. Today the cafe was less than a quarter full compared to waiting for a table last year. I wonder if this is as a result of the menu.Very, very disappointing. It was so good.

The member of staff was on her phone leaning on the counter and when she made us coffee she walked over looking at it her before putting it in her apron pocket. That was very unproffessional. The guy who brought us our rolls appologised and asked if there was anything he can do. He also explained the manager and supervisor where not in for the complaint. The food was nice and but to look at that when you are in a break from work is appaling.

We make a point of dropping in here for food whenever we are heading up the A9. It's much busier than it used to be, but the staff are friendly and efficient and the food is great - they have something for everyone, and a much better selection of vegetarian and gluten-free options than most cafes. Really good value, too.

It was busy which we didnt expect on a Sunday. The kids food was good and they enjoyed the melons had to buy one. The cappuccino and latte done to perfection. The food was also good I recommend Highlander panin. Our waiter took time to find out if there was anything we wanted and even had a chat with the kids and they said he is a funny blackguy and he is so friendly.

Parking outside is free but you should give your registration number to a member of Tiso staff just in case you want to say longer than 2.5 hours (there are lots more shops, an M&S etc in addition to Tiso). The Fit Food Bistro is upstairs in Tiso and you wait to be seated. Six of us were eating but not everyone arrived at once - still it was no trouble to arrange a table for six for us. Excellent service - all done easily with a cheery smile. The menu looked attractive with soup (choice of two), sandwiches (choice of bread), panini, baked potato or salad. Efficient taking of our food order, putting everything into an ipad type device. Food was top quality, large helpings, very enjoyable. The BBC sandwich (Bacon, Bri, Cranberry and rocket) was just fantastic. Various coffees included Americano, Cappuccino which were both good (plenty of cocoa on the Cappuccino). Also an excellent kids lunch deal in a bag with games to play etc. Six lunches came to well under £50, exceptional value for healthy, very enjoyable meals. All the staff were exceptionally helpful, really nice people. There is a softplay area for children down a stair from the cafe. It cost £4 for each child - looked fun but we had run out of time.

This is a handy cafe on the road north. Parking is free and the snacks are good and wholesome. Soup is invariably tasty and the sandwiches are generous. Although it can get quite busy, staff are efficient and we've never had to wait long. Great facility for kids too, with a large climbing frame. So all in all a good spot!

The cafe area was extrememly busy when we arrived and grabbed one of the last tables available. We were initially worried about the potential wait to eat but this was completely unfounded. Our order was quickly taken and after a very short wait our hot food and coffee arrived at our table. Food was tasty and as ordered. We also noticed how efficently any vacant tables were cleared and cleaned after use. Overall a good experience and we were really impressed by the quality and efficiency of the service given how busy the cafe was at the time.

Decided to try the cafe on 2nd July after visiting Tiso. Looked nice, and menu was okay. Our food came on dirty plates, maybe a dishwasher problem, we were given our drinks in plastic cups, (everyone else in restaurant seemed to have been given a glass). When food arrived mine had large clumps of hard overcooked haggis, which I could not bring myself to eat. My baked potato was dry, and had 3 pieces of chicken in a potato that cost £6.70. No one came near us to ask how the food was, so my potato sat largely uneaten. Eventually we gave up waiting for someone to come over and just paid the bill and left. Wish we had gone to M&S just a few metres away. I sent an email to Tiso when I got home, and the manager responded quickly to tell me he had passed the email on to the manager of the history, who has yet to address it. I won't ever visit this cafe again. Our bill was only £25, but it's £25 I wish we'd spent somewhere else.

We enjoyed two excellent dinners at the Terrace Restaurant. A special mention for our young server Harry who provided excellent and friendly service he was open he was a recent start but his desire to be the best he could be shone through and he had a very positive personality which made the whole experience very enjoyable. Management take note he is a keeper!

Last time I was here the fish and chips was really good. Afraid to say this time my wife had the fish and chips and it was cafe standard at best. I had the mac and cheese and I have to say this was the worst mac and cheese I have ever had in my life. Microwaved with what little sauce there was at the bottom of the bowl. The parmesan was probably fresh about a week ago and been sitting out since then. We won’t be bac. Pity as we are local. Staff (waiter, bar staff and receptionist) were pleasant enough though and can’t fault them at all.

Quality has really dropped here. We used to love the place and it was a real destination. However went today and coffee, from an automatic machine, was terrible, cakes didn't taste fresh. Staff were really disinterested, unhelpful and rude at times. Mid service, two staff stopped serving us, started talking about their weekend plans and then after a few minutes returned to serve us. They served us dairy milk when we asked for non dairy milk. The actual shop had no music or atmosphere. It feels that since 2023 the company has really went downhill. No dogs allowed, but food left on the tables which attracts wild animals in the cafe.

I would give two stars for the food and one star for table etiquette. We were unimpressed when we sat down to a table setting of basic low-quality, stamped-out flatware with sharp edges. Three of us ordered meat (duck, pork and beef), the other fish. No alternative, appropriate knives were brought to suit the food, nor was the cutlery replaced after the starter. There were splotches of dried food debris on the underside of all the placemats, which apparently never gets wiped off when they are stacked. The food itself was okay, but portions were on the small side and overpriced for what it was, e.g. two slices of duck breast, 1" slice of sea bass, very little vegetable to accompany. The chicken liver parfait starter was good but came with only three small slices of toasted baguette and bread was £6 extra. There was an abundance of wait staff operating on high-speed settings. We had trouble understanding what kept so many staff on the run (literally) given the restaurant was not full and could have been disruptive were it a romantic dinner for two. We just watched the show. Overall, a four-star restaurant should pay more attention to detail, quality and cleanliness, if it wants to have a four-star reputation.

We had an enjoyable lunch at the Bein Inn. My partner said his burger was good, his purple coleslaw looked appealing and I have to say his chips (something neither of us is fond of) were probably the best we've had. I ordered a chicken fajita, which was the most unusual I've ever had: *everything*, including the rice (either pilau or basmati, not long grain as I'd expect), wrapped up in one big dod with three sauces on the side. It tasted fine and was filling, but looked tragi-comical. The young waitress warned us they had no avocados, but on questioning thought they may have guacamole; however it was substituted with some kind of chutney, which was ok if unconventional. On the plus side, it all seemed to have actually been cooked rather than banged into a microwave, which we appreciated. The service was good and friendly, and our food arrived in a timely manner, noting that we arrived at the beginning of Friday lunchtime when it was quiet. We're not in a hurry to go back, as the menu was limited and a bit overpriced, at least for my weird offering at £17. There seemed to be some renovation work going on in the entrance area, all good, but didn't add to the ambience. We'd originally looked into this for a Sunday lunch, which seems popular with others, would possibly try it for that in future.
