Fission Fish & Chips in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

Have been coming here for years and is still the best fish and chips! The portion sizes are very good and the staff are always friendly. Really excited to see the addition of pies and gravy! A must if you are in the village.

General food quality is good. Cooked fresh to order at the time we visited. The portion sizes are the smallest I have ever had from any chip shop. The fish was better size, was fresh and cooked well. Chips are not good value for money. We have been coming for years and it isn’t as good as it used to be. That said the general quality is still good, the low score is not because of the quality. It’s a decent shop with decent quality food, just portion sizes let it down for the chips and general prices are a little higher for items other than fish for the quantity you get.

We have been coming here every year on our holidays ever since I can remember. Today something was different and it seems they’ve changed hands. We had our usual order, and whilst yes the portions are smaller…we were still left just as satisfied as usual! Yummy fish, yummy chips, yummy nuggets, reasonably priced and stellar service from the lads working. Taking over a business with an already great reputation in the community is always going to be hard, especially when people are desperate for something to complain about. Keep up the good work guys, we will certainly be back!!

What a disappointment, we had been to Fission previously and had been really pleased with the food. However on this visit on the weekend 7 September we ordered and we can only imagine that the original owners had either sold up or had lost total interest … The chips were a disaster, frozen, soggy, bland and lukewarm… tasteless, and the fish although a little warmer, had batter that was undercooked, listless and a strange beige colour. All in all a major disaster all round.. It may have been an off day, but I’d steer well clear … Rob Haynes

Pre-ordered via SMS after mid-day and received a thumbs up confirmation. Cod and chips for 4 adults, curry sauce, mushy peas. Kids had SFC and chips. Everything perfect, not a soggy chip in sight. Don’t know where some of the negative reviews are coming from as this was the best we have had in a while. Yum yum . Sorry for the photo, ate the lot!

Pre ordered fish and chips for the whole family. Food all cooked to time and was the best fish and chips we’ve had in Cornwall so far this holiday. Thoroughly enjoyed . Will definitely be going back again .

It must of changed hands. We used to go every now and then and go up hubby's head and watch the sea. I thought it was odd that I turned up and it wasn't heaving like normal, I was prepared for the usual long wait but was served straight away and as there was only a couple of people there was served and order was sorted really quickly. They messed my order up but when I saw the portion sizes I'm glad they gave me 2 portions of sausage and chips and not 2 sausages and chips. The portions were tiny and the chips weren't as nice as they used to be. £26 for cod and chips, 2 portions of sausage and chips 2 curry sauces and a fanta and for the portion size it's a rip off! We won't return again. Edit, just for clarity I never ordered child's portions I asked for 2 sausages and a portion of chips. The guy behind the counter said plain or battered, I said plain there was no mention of children. As for having an issue with another local fish and chip shop, yes they ran out of normal cod and tried to fob us off with a child's cod for the same price. Next time we won't go to either and go greg and lous, morrishes, cousin Jack's anywhere that doesn't try to rip you off

Some of the worst fish and chips I’ve ever had… used to be alright, but haven’t had a good meal from here for years. Soggy and undercooked batter on fish that’s been over cooked and chips that are always hit or miss… Extortionate prices for lacklustre food.

Really disappointed! The chips were overcooked and dry, looked liked they had been reheated for the evening from lunch serving. Portions were very small. The worst fish and chips I have ever had.

Everything about the food terrible. I've been going to fission for over 20 years? Keeping the name is an insult to previous owners. Chips rock hard and tasteless, fish over cooked and dry and mushy peas watery. Portions half the size previous owners used to give. If you haven't been for a few years and have great memories of what was best fish and chips in UK then don't go back as memory will be ruined

Got there too early only to be served what I believe were yesterday’s chips that had been reheated, the small ones were burnt to death and the other ones were soggy, for the price they were I would at least expect freshly cooked food, will not be going back😡😡

Genuinely disappointed. Over priced and under sized portions.. was a quick service.. overcooked chips and yet soggy..mushy peas was more like pea water..first and last time I’ll be using them.. better off going to the local pubs

Used to be the best fish and chips in the county unfortunately was taken over late last year by new owners and since then it’s not good i remember trying them September around the time they opens and was not good then so gave them time to improve as new so tried again in may even worse only one small menu very restricted and chips was over done very very small portions for what your paying We had curry sauce + mushy peas +jumbo sassage + chips scampi bites ( 6 small over done ) chicken chunks ( 6 ) total over £21

Asked and paid in advance for 4 small Cod and chips. On getting home we unwrapped to find 4 cod bite portions and chips.It was a very busy night and we heard stocks of both fish and chips were low but to substitute to an inferior product without being informed is un forgivable.Living local the business will miss our custom in the winter months.

We spent a long weekend in St Agnes and really fancied some good fish and chips by the seaside! Fission didn’t disappoint. The fish was delicious … really fresh and perfectly cooked, flaking on the fork. The chips were yummy too, they felt very indulgent. The only things I would say are (1) the batter wasn’t especially crispy, verging on soggy, and (2) they were the priciest fish and chips we’ve had. But, having said that, we really enjoyed them!!

It’s Ok as an average fish and chip shop. The chips are average, nothing to really criticise or praise. The big shame is this place used to be the best fish and chip shop in the county/country. Their chips were spectacular, and the fish was they best money could buy. Ok they weren’t cheap but I’d challenge anyone to find better. Now they are as I say, OK but if you remember how it used to be, sorry keep the good memories and don’t return.

Good takeaway fish and chips. Prices are similar to other fish and chip shops in the area (see photo for prices in April 2024). They don't sell large portions of chips but their box of chips is a decent size. The Southern Fried Chicken Strips were nice and succulent, some of the best we've had in the area. The batter on the fish was nice (not the best we've had in the area, but still very tasty and not too greasy). Chips were cooked nicely. The was a bit of a wait, but you can order ahead to save time (see photo for details). We enjoyed our meal and would go back again if we were in St. Agnes. Our favourite Fish & Chip shop in the area is still The Village Chip Shop in Cubert, but this one comes a close second.

Had the best Cod & Chips ever from this quaint little village Fish Shop. The cod tasted so fresh and was coated in a beautiful light and golden crispy batter. The chips were cooked to perfection with that old-fashioned fish shop taste (not the hard frozen tasteless ones usually served these days). We will be visiting St Agnes again next year and will definitely be ordering our Fish & Chips from here !!!

Popped into Fission last Friday. Excellent fish and chips, super fresh and tasty. Lots of other options as well. Definitely recommend

Got to be the worst fish and chips I’ve ever had. The chips were clearly reheated. I wouldn’t even say from that lunch time, more like the day before going by how brown and cardboard they were. You expect to pay a bit more from a seaside chippy, but £11 of for a “adult” (actually tiny, kids portion in my local) and a handful of crap chips was daylight robbery. Curry sauce was horrible as well Avoid! Totally disappointed!

After reading what seemed like some pretty harsh reviews felt it was definitely worth reviewing my experience! First of all whilst it didn’t impact on my 5/5 score, the service here does take a while, but with good reason, all the orders seemed to be cooked to order and because of this the food was great. As a family we had both the cod and haddock, both of which tasted spot on and fresh!! Whilst not cheap, for the quality product we received it was a really fair price. We’ve been visiting St Agnes for many years now and during fissions time we have never had a bad meal… Top job, keep up the great work!!

This used to be the best fish and chip shop in the South West, possibly even the whole country. Their chips were simply amazing and the fish and batter was absolute perfection. They even came served in a cardboard box to let the steam out to prevent them turning into a soggy mess. We visited Fission again in September 2023 expecting the same brilliant fish and chips but unfortunately that wasn’t going to be the case. When we arrived we were surprised to see completely different people serving behind the counter. We ignored this warning sign knowing the fish and chips we were going to get would be amazing. But when they appeared on a tray wrapped in paper we started to worry slightly more, but still looking forward to the previous wonderful fish and chips we tried to ignore the warnings. The fish and chips we received at £11.50 per portion were the worst fish and chips I’ve ever tasted. The chips were dry and rubbery (black in places) and the fish batter was wet and tasteless. If you’ve ever been to Fission in the past and tasted the perfection they used to deliver, I’d really strongly suggest relishing that memory and not returning.

2 fish and chips and portion of mushy peas for just under £25! Wouldn't mind too much if the food was good but food was poor. Chips were overcooked and more batter than fish. Would never go back.

Food was decent but the inflexible menu leaves the score at 4 stars. It's unusual for a fish and chip shop to not allow ordering individual items, rather we had to order and cod and chips for ~£11.

Me and my partner had Fish and chips at £11.50 per portion only fish was overcooked and dry and the chips tasted horrible and half of them had the eye type things in them my dog wouldn't eat any of it when I tried to feed it to her as I wasn't going to eat it I fell it's over priced for the size and taste

I cycled down to this chip shop in the pouring rain and it was well worth getting drenched for. I had southern fried chicken that was exquisite and chips that tasted like they were made by the hands of gods. I will definitely be taking my mates there.

Great fish and chips but expensive, peas come in a carton and they don’t sell gravy. Only have limited numbers of fish so order early to avoid disappointment

Used to be the best place around for large portions of wonderfully fresh fish and chips. Sadly however on the last three visits the portions have shrunk dramatically, both the fish fillets which are also seemingly of a lesser quality and the chips. The mushy peas are now watery and hard and the curry sauce is no longer the same classic ‘chip shop’ variety that it once was. And all of this whilst seeing the prices hiked. We fully understand the pressures of inflation being small business owners ourselves, but given the double whammy of a marked reduction in quality combined with the additional expense, we will be taking our custom elsewhere. Such a shame.

Chips were good, but the fish was dry and under seasoned. Forgot to pack the mushy peas I’d paid for and seemed to begrudge providing wooden forks. Had to ask twice. Not particularly friendly service.

Been walking the coast path for the day and called in as we heard it had a new owner. We weren’t disappointed. The batter was light, crispy and not at all greasy . The chips were real chips and the mushy peas tasted so fresh. We will be back !

I’m going to have to say that these were some of the best fish and chips I’ve had… got to be in my top 2 anyway. Our fish was split into two equal portions so they were both cooked to perfection. The batter was crispy and tasty, and I’d go as far to say it’s the best battered fish I’ve had since I was a kid and had a local chip shop that I always used as a benchmark, and that was more than 25 years ago! I didn’t expect to be impressed so I was slightly taken aback. How could I not leave a review? Ultra clean shop, friendly welcome and good curry sauce. Thanks! Jim

Wow, £20 nearly for fish and chips and sausage and chips!!!! The fish was nice, but a very small portion and again small chips. Over all a very expensive take away, and not the nicest. Very disappointed.

Locally recommended and with exacting standards we were really impressed by the large haddock and chips. We were advised to call ahead and place our order as it can get busy. Not the cheapest (roughly £10 per portion of large haddock and large chips), however...

Such a shame was expecting great things. Chips were recooked, hard and really poor quality. This was at 17 15 hrs on a Friday …Fresh food was what I was expecting Cod was actually good .

Maybe the most disappointing fish and chips I've ever had in my life. Stingy portion of the furthest thing from chip shop chips I've ever tasted; dry, flavourless oven chips, not remotely greasy or soggy in any way shape or form. The fish was OK, but about half the size of what I get at my local chip shop, not as well cooked and more expensive. The mushy peas were the most unappetising shade of grey that I've ever seen any form of food come in, they looked how I imagine mushy peas would look if they were found l 500 years from now in a war bunker. Curry sauce was just about the only thing I got that resembled something bought from a chippy.

Fabulous fresh fish and chips. Cod was full of flavour and just perfect. Would certainly recommend when in St Agnes.

Went here on our last night of our holiday as a treat, must say that it was absolutely lovely. The fish was cooked perfectly and the batter was light and crisp, and the chips were great, waited about 10mins for it but well worth it.

Really excellent fish and chips. We have been back to Fission time and time again over the past four or five years. Fish is always cooked fresh and with just a thin crispy coating of batter. Chips are thick cut and tasty. Better be quick for the scampi! Would definitely recommend.

Hate leaving negative reviews, would rather give credit where it's due. But I think you cannot expect a business to improve without any feedback. The service I received wasn't very friendly, no common courtesy (hello, thank your, please etc). Felt the gentleman serving was annoyed with me as he was told by one of his colleagues to serve me (as he was chatting, and paying no attention to me waiting). I was informed that what I wanted to order was sold out, to then hear the next customer ask for the same and then served the 'sold out' meal. I was also refused a bag to carry home the 6 boxes of food as I did not have 10p (paid for food with card). Bit disappointed by that experience as a paying customer, and having to ask a shop down the road for a bag to not struggle home with the chips. Food was ok.

The best fish & chips, which I had in UK. Excellent customer service, people were very polite and friendly. Fish and chips were excellent prepared and cooked, all was fresh and tasted delicious. The portion was really big, what really surprised me, after reading some reviews regarding small portions. The price for fish and chips was £8.50, which I think it is reasonable and definitely worth the money. Well done guys, you are doing great job over there. There are quiet few people working over there and from my short observation, it looks like there is a friendly atmosphere, where people put their hearts to prepare meals for visitors. The only disadvantage is a lack of parking space, but not only for Fish & Chips shop, but as well for many local businesses around. Shame for St. Agnes council, they should crete some more temporary parking spaces, which will attract more visitors to go there and help local businesses.

Easy parking in the street or the parking area next to it. Right next to a cash point which came in handy. the staff were friendly and the wait for out order not too long. Greta quality food and so much of it it made a lunch re-heated the next day.

I don’t think you will find better fish and chips than this. Have been coming to St Agnes frequently for three years and never had anything worse than excellent. Yesterday they sold out by 8 o’clock. So book or go early!

Lovely fish, chips were a little uninspired. Wait was fine and there's good spots to park your car for a few minutes while you wait for your food. Not much else in the immediate area.

Holidaying in Cornwall and this place was 5 minutes from where we were staying. It was so amazing eat from there twice in 4 days. Best fish and chips ever had. All cooked to order by wonderful friendly staff. Highly recommend

Called in here on the last day of our break in the area and what a treat! All food was freshly cooked to order. You can order in advance by phone or text to pickup later or take a chance if they’re not too busy. Haddock and chips were excellent as was the southern fried chicken if nor wanting fish. The chips were crisp and dry which made a lovely change to most places where the chips get soggy and stick together. A real gem, will definitely go there again when in the area.
