We stayed in Mill Cottage just down the road from The Fishermen's Rest. We had an amazing time in the pub. We were made so welcome. The food was excellent and the staff were brilliant. A million thanks to Mark, Athenia, Libby and Chris for bringing us into their world. We will be back xxx

Large pub with cosy bar area and super friendly local dog. Massive, church hall sized dining room so plenty of space but still managed to feel cosy. Room between the tables so you don’t feel crowded in. Arrived with two dogs and found a table in the restaurant, drinks order taken quickly, decent pint of Guinness which is rare in these parts. Perfect specials board; pie, ham egg or gammon egg and chips, chilli so spoilt for choice on top of a very comprehensive standard menu. Fish and chips massive portion, gammon superb, chilli hot but tasty and scampi fresh and full portion. Super service from our waitress and bar staff. We even got some home made tartare sauce. Reasonably priced. Small car park in front along with some outside seating. FREE car park other side of the A road and a tidal road if you want to walk your food off. Great find and highly recommended

We called last minute today (Easter Sunday) and asked if there was a spare table in the next 15 minutes, the lady who answered the phone was polite and helpful and got us a table sorted. As soon as we entered we were surprised with how bright it was inside and we loved the Easter decorations and effort made 🐣 4 of us had the roast dinner and the lamb was absolutely delicious, melt in the mouth 😋 it was hot, so so nice and we would definitely come back. We were served quickly and could not fault the service. The staff even came back to the table twice to give the children mini easter eggs. Thank you for a lovely Sunday lunch, next time we’re visiting from Leicester we’ll be back 😋

We booked Christmas dinner here at the Fisherman's Rest while staying in Devon with family and all agreed it was just the best Christmas dinner we've eaten. The food was good quality and cooked perfectly; a couple of us had the festive nut & vegetable roast with a lovely vegetarian gravy, others had the baked salmon or roast turkey - all cooked so well and the desert was to die for - a Bailey's cheesecake (this was just the best ever). Oh and not to forget the brussels, not over or under-cooked - they were perfect and our meals were all served hot and good sized portions. The tables were decorated beautifully and with handmade knitted white angels and red minature Christmas stockings which were all filled with chocolates... a lovely personal touch. And the Christmas crackers had gifts to keep (not the usual junk)!!! A very big thank you to those working on this day and for making it so very special for us xx

We picked this pub as it was the closest to our accommodation, and after a long journey down here we just wanted somewhere local. The reviews were not promising, and several peoples' eyebrows were raised when we said we were eating here...the menu didn't inspire a lot of confidence either, and the room had zero ambience. So far so disappointing. Then the food arrived. Specials of steak and kidney pie were pronounced as being the best ever eaten (and they've eaten a lot of pies). The charcuterie platter and the whitebait were similarly excellent, and generous in size. The service was friendly and efficient, and we left thinking that this pub is a lot better than the reviews, and deserves a better reputation. It could help itself by responding to emails and updating its website and having a slightly more interesting menu, but we would be happy to eat here again.

We stopped off for lunch yesterday ( 10/9/21). The indoor dining area is simple, very clean and the tables suitably placed apart ( there is also an outdoor dining area) The staff were friendly, helpful and the service we received was excellent. We ordered the scampi and chips and fish and chips both served with peas, it was obvious that the freshest ingredients had been used and the food was cooked to perfection. Added bonus of a car park.

We have just returned from a lovely meal at the Fisherman’s Rest. I took the landlady’s recommendation of hunters chicken and thoroughly enjoyed it. Seared chicken breast, lean bacon and a lovely bechamel sauce topped with a tangy barbecue sauce. This however paled into insignificance when compared to the warm chocolate brownie served with a dark chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream. The textures, flavours and smell were heavenly, the warm gooiness perfection and the portion generous .One of the best pub meals I have ever had.

We drove around on Easter Sunday, finding a lot of pretentious pubs with car parks full of Land Rovers and Hooray Henry cars, down for the weekend in their Holiday homes, the pubs were all full weeks in advance, then we came across the Fishermans Rest, a few miles from the main tourist spots, tucked away in a small village, we found tables, a warm welcome, very kind and attentive service, and yes, pub grub, not pretentious, not trying to be what it isn't, just honest wholesome food. The soup was delicious and the baguettes of very good size and quality with tasty fillings. The beer was excellent. Prices were sensible and not trying to rip people off. My only suggestion would be to spend some money on the interior and make it a bit more cosy and pubby, too open and canteen like in most of it. It has the potential to be so much more.

We've been going to the Fishermans for years - no, its not a posh restaurant, but it is a pub restaurant, and the food is way above average, home made, with love and really good value for money. Its one of a dying breed of pubs that is genuinely the centre of the village - so you will be mingling with the locals, and their dogs and their children - so bring yours along too - if you are visiting without them, you'll love the atmosphere on a busy sunday lunchtime, all buzzing with chat and laughter...remember what those are?The car park is tiny, but dont worry, because back over the roundabout is a FREE car park - go there, and then walk under the underpass, across the footbridge and up the stairs into the entrance - if you've got muddy boots or wellies then throw them on the pile with everyone elses, in the porch - dont worry no-ones going to nick them...this is Devon. In the summer, there are tables and chairs down by the brook, and if you're nice and smiley to the staff...table service. This isn't a fast food restaurant either, so take a deep breath and relax - this is Devon - your food will come, and if you are staying locally, they do take away fish and chips on a friday night - pop in, order, have a pint, take supper home - genius! Finally please try to remember, Devon is one of the most visited place for holidays in the UK, yet still has one of the lowest average earnings in the UK, mostly because the hospitality industry can't afford high wages - a couple of quid tip would go further than you could ever imagine.

Came here out of the blue after the place we wanted to visit was fully booked. Up on arrival it wasn't quite what we expected from the pictures we had seen, much more a pub than a restaurant. There was lots of options on the menu catering for everybody. The portions are big and i'd say the food was about average, I had the mackerel starter with the sausages and mash main. The staff where extremely welcoming and after finishing our meals we went for a drink in the bar whilst the bar staff tried there hardest to find us a taxi home (being from the city we didn't realise this would be an issue). Libby was really helpful and even let her dinner go cold to find us a taxi. By the end of the right I really did feel like a local, I really would record this place for a causal night out.

We were in the area and looking for somewhere to have Sunday lunch. Came across Fishermen's Rest whilst driving past on the main road nearby. Despite being near to last food order time this was not a problem and not being very busy there were plenty of tables to choose from. Not being very busy at lunchtime on a Sunday was a little worrying as country pubs at weekends tend to be busy. However, there was plenty on the menu including two roasts which 3 of 4 of us ordered. The other meal was vegetarian. When the food arrived there was plenty of meat and the vegetables were served in separate dishes – again plenty of them with both roast and new potatoes. Being full we didn’t order a dessert. The staff were friendly and the price was reasonable. Clearly this was a good old local’s pub with a restaurant not crowded out by lots of visitors so retained it local nature. Overall for Sunday lunch we would recommend Fishermen’s Rest.

Ordered our food which seemed reasonably priced and when it came the portions were huge. Too huge really and almost like it was to make up for the quality of the ingredients which were obviously very cheap. It's not nice to have to write such a poor review but given that we only had 2 nights in the area and one was spent here, it felt like such a waste. We felt we couldn't comment at the time as it wasn't anything we felt could be fixed straight away.

What a lovely pub with a friendly and welcoming team. We visited to watch the 6 nations, we received a warm welcome, great selection of beers and bar snacks in a traditional pub. Lovely riverside location a perfect spot for estuary walks following a long lazy lunch.

We had lunch there on sat 2nd Jan 2016 at 1pm along with 2others in the pub at that point I should have left, we sat in the seating area next to a really dirty window ledge.we ordered whitebait and garlic mushrooms for starters and fish and chips for main of which one grilled as wify is wheat intolerant . The whitebait was ok with a mixed leaf salad which was very limp and offered no kind of dressing at all not even a slice of lemon the garlic mushrooms again ok but very cheesy. The fish and chips with mushy peas, the fish was on the small side very grey in colour but covered in a very thick batter, chips were of the frozen type and the peas good. Again no sauces offered l had to ask,I live fairly local to here with a lot of descent pubs with good food and after that I can understand why there's only 2 couples eating there, very poor

This evening at the Fisherman's rest I have felt like a second thought and a nuisance. Service was very poor and I overheard the waitress telling her friends at the bar how annoyed she was that I had come in to eat in the restaurant, how she now had to turn the ovens on and then clean the dishes afterwards. (Wednesday evening at 7pm, 2 days before Christmas )The food was bland and lacked flavour, but that is something they are aware of, seeing as the waitress ordered her dinner from the local Chinese and enjoyed it on the bar. After being left for 40 minutes after mains the waitress then remembered me and asked if I was okay. I asked to order a dessert, she said she would check the availability of the cheesecake and as she walked away she exclaimed to her friends at the bar "For gods sake, he now wants a dessert".I paid the bill and she asked what I was doing in the area. I said that I had a holiday home in the area. Paid the bill (no tip) and left. I got outside and realised that I'd left my umbrella inside, went back inside and caught her saying "It's rich tw*ts like him that..."At this point I came back in and she looked at me dead in the eye went bright red, stumbled over her words to make it sound like she was discussing something else and then was overly nice saying "oh what have you forgotten, is it still raining out there, good luck you didn't get half way and remember"Unless you're a local, I wouldn't bother coming in, instead head into Kingsbridge, Modbury or Salcombe the atmosphere and service will be better for starters and I'm sure the food will be better too.

The Goulash off the specials board was superb, healthy sized portion with real chips. The Chilli was really enjoyed by my Mum! Lovely friendly waitress and chatted at bar with owners(all 3)......nice people. Location good but décor a bit dated and in need of makeover.

We had dinner here one evening during our holiday at Bigbury-on-Sea. Parking was a bit tricky (it was a busy Friday night) but the food was very good along with the service, the staff in particular were very friendly and welcoming.

After a morning on the beach we were hungry, thirsty and tired so stopped at The Fisherman’s Rest for a mid-week lunch. It's a big place but was almost empty so there was plenty of room (it was after 1.00). The staff were very pleasant and helpful and the food was delicious...ham egg peas and chips especially good and very filling...and quickly delivered to us. The table needed a wipe-down and this was done speedily when requested. Good value typical 'pub grub' meal.

Very ordinary pub fare. Not a very comfortable seating area. Nice pub type bar which seems to be their main attraction.

This pub is in a great location but is in need of some (ok a lot of) modernisation. The swirly patterned carpet, sticky tables and tired decor are off putting but in fairness, we all enjoyed our food. The menu is limited and basic but everything we had was served hot, in a generous portion and tasty. The pricing was baffling - some items seemed pretty cheap (the 1/4 lb burger and chips in a basket was particularly reasonable at £5 and our 8 year old loved it) as was the mega burger, an almost unmanageably large double cheeseburger with bacon, cheese, an egg, onion rings and a basket of chips at less than £10. But there was a stuffed pepper on the menu for (if I remember rightly) £11!! I can only imagine it was stuffed with gold dust as no amount of rice could be worth 11 quid! There was also a few gluten free options advertised on the menu. This is not a fine dining establishment and you shouldn't expect cordon bleu dishes. However, it is ok for functional eating if, like us, you are staying in the village and don't want to cook, travel too far or pay a lot for fancy food. Go with low expectations and allow yourself to be pleasantly surprised by the adequate and substantial food.

We stopped here for a quick beer, couple of coffees, chips and a giant veggie burger and chips. We ordered indoors where the pub smelt crossed between damp, dogs and wee!!We took our coffee's out to the tables overlooking the river and again we noticed the smell of wee all around the tables!! The coffee's were fine no problem and then the chips arrived which were over cooked but edible. The beer came out then with the giant veggie burger. It was bland, looked very pale and the size did not equate to a 'giant' burger in any shape or form! It could easily have been spiced up with pickles, onions etc to make it a bit special but it was not and totally tasteless. The beer that we left had sediment floating in the bottom and therefore we could not drink. We complained and a lady kindly came down from the pub to ask what was the problem. She explained the burgers were bought in and they had just opened a new keg of the beer and offered us free coffee's which we declined. The biggest disappointment was charging £9 for a 'giant' veggie burger which realistically should have been sold for around a fiver with chips!! A rip-off I would suggest and the fact that it was a lovely sunny day and the pub was almost empty speaks volumes!!!!!

We came at 2.30 ish in the afternoon i went for a yummy veggie basket meal my daughter had a bowl of chips and my mum the ham roll. All the lunches were made to order so extremely fresh and mum's came with salad and nachos too that plus beverages and we didn't go over £20. Bargain it's in a lovely setting just off the main road with a little brook running by the outdoor seating and a fabulous playground further up the green with an area for little ones and a great climbing area for teens. There is also a subway under the road so you can wander down to the river for some stunning views and a look at the tidal roadway.

While staying in a holiday cottage in Aveton Gifford we visited the pub a few times and ate there twice. The pub is very dog friendly and the staff made us feel welcome. The food was great - perfect pub food and plenty to eat. The building itself is a bit tired inside but that didn't bother is as the food, drink and staff are far more important.

A group of 7 of us called in for dinner mid week. We called in based on location, we were driving past after a day birdwatching. The girl on the bar was friendly and showed us to the restaurant, there were a few locals in but otherwise it was really quiet and seemed a bit down at heel. However, there were some good 'pub grub' menu choices and the food was fresh and of a decent quality. We all enjoyed our choices and desserts. The beer seemed to go down well with those who had it.It wasn't amazing and would benefit from a bit of modernising, but the staff were nice, the service was good and the food was decent for the price.Cost about £18 for 2 courses and a pint of beer.

We stopped off on the way back to Plymouth for lunch. We were met by the smell I can't even start to describe, unfriendly staff, I ordered a ham plough man's according to the menu, after a long wait it finely arrived ham!!!!! I think not solid lard with a salad oh and mustn't forget the small pickle onion. The pub needs a lot of work and love, a real shame as location beautiful.

Staff was rude when they got our order wrong and then correct it after a bit of telling them but the was going to refuse and service that day was not good. Was over charged with a coffee and cake we didnt have as an extra 7 pounds , Other times been good. Food nice.

Awesome. Don’t judge a book by its cover. I arrived late evening for work over a couple of days. The staff couldn’t have been more welcoming and helpful from getting me a taxi late evening at the train station to helping me get to my work venue in the morning. I had arrived past restaurant hours but the staff were more than happy to prepare food if I had wanted. I was also given a local delicacy from a local. I’m normally a poor sleeper but slept so well. Whilst the rooms at first appearance look a little dated the bed is so so comfy. The room also spotlessly clean. The question is - what’s more important to you - a great nights sleep or a sterile environment with mod cons? Sadly the first morning I didn’t have chance to sample the breakfast- I didn’t have time to wait. They have a sign saying ‘We don’t serve fast food. We serve fresh food as fast as we can”. Suffice to say I ordered my breakfast for the following morning before I went to bed so it was ready for me when I needed it. Now for the highlight DINNER. I eat a lot and this is definitely one of the best meals I had in a long time. Not the usual processed pub food. The main(stuffed chicken with root veg and dauphinois potatoes was delicious. I never order dessert but felt I had to - the main was so good. The sticky toffee pudding did not disappoint. Overall a really great stay. Thanks so much

I booked 2 nights for friends online, i had some simple questions about parking and accessibility but couldn't get hold of anyone to answer my questions so i cancelled. I cancelled nearly 1 month before the cut off for a full 100% refund ( clearly stated in their contract when booking) . I then spent nearly 2 months calling, emailing, leaving voicemails to get my money back - they ignored every one. In the end I had to claim the money back via my bank. If my bank hadnt stepped in and help, this establishment would have stolen over £400 from me. I am writing to hopefully sway others and stop them doing the same to others
