Disappointingly, worst experience of any visit for a very long time. Although the staff were polite enough, they were obviously understaffed and as a result, very disorganised. We had booked. On arrival, a long queue was forming for people waiting to be seated. No staff could be seen. After approximately 10mins, someone did eventually come. We were seated on a random table that had not been set. No apology for the delay in being seated. We opted to order online. Starter arrived (baked Camembert). It had obviously sat on the side for a while as it had started to conjille. Main courses arrived. My sister had ordered a steak, medium. It arrived blue. She tried to eat it but being even unable to cut it, we did ask if it could be cooked a touch more. It came back well done with all items baking hot and soggy chips. We can only guess that the plate was chuck in a microwave. In terms of environment, the table appeared clean but was sticky. The floor was dirty and the cushions in the bench had seen better days. This was all very disappointing. Management of this venue needs a complete overhaul. On the positive, the barman was very pleasant and trying his best to cope.

On arrival had to wait a long time to be seated, there was already somebody else in front of us who had waited longer. Actual table wasn’t ready - we were on time, not early - the table we were given was laid but felt very sticky. Ordered a blackcurrant and lemonade and large Shiraz. When brought over, wine had clearly been badly poured or spilled when carried and soft drink had not been mixed at all. The Shiraz was very nice. Ordered hummus just to nibble, very tasty but needed more bread. Wife ordered sausage and mash - she said mash nice, sausages cooked but very pale looking and green veg a bit undercooked, although accept this is personal taste. I had cheese potato and leek pie - pastry top overcooked and very crunchy, pie itself quite tasty and happy with mash and veg. Gravy tasted like Bisto. Waitresses were fine. One of them brought the dessert menu but left us so long that we decided against ordering and instead paid and left. On a side note, my wife used the ladies toilets which she described as unacceptable; toilet rolls on the floor, none actually in the dispenser; the sanitary bin actually overflowing, which begs the question as to how often these are attended/cleaned. Rarely, I would suggest.

Visited today for lunch with friends, what a mistake. Our table was booked for 13.15 we arrived spot on time and were swiftly seen to our table and told somebody would be over shortly to take our food and drink order. After waiting about twenty minutes we noticed members of staff standing around an ordering station chatting so we decided the best thing was to go to the bar and fetch the drinks ourselves. At the bar the barmen ignored us as he was busy doing orders that some customers must have been lucky enough to have been dealt with. The girl that had shown us to our table could see that a queue was now forming at the bar as we weren’t the only ones fed up with waiting, she even told me it was table service in the restaurant, to which I replied, yes,but when? We again waited ages for someone to take our food order and when it did eventually arrive one meal was brought out then after about five minutes the other three arrived. The food was nothing more than average and not somewhere you would recommend. The biggest problem with this place is the staff and lack of supervision, I was always taught never go back to the bar or kitchen empty handed.

Very pleasant setting. Staff pleasant. Food was absolutely dreadful. I ordered garlic panini which arrived cold and hardly a hint of garlic. For my main u ordered a bacon and beef burger with chips coleslaw. The menu stated a stacked high burger. What I received was completely the opposite. One messily rather if bacon that I had to use my bifocal to try and see it. The beef burger was over cooked and tasteless. When I looked into the tiny pot for the coleslaw I nearly fell of my seat. One tiny fork full not even a mouthful. And all this for just £14.50. what a rip off and I am still suffering from an upset tummy. I would not recommend ever to go there. Crap.

Despite the difficult times prevailing at this time, my Wife and I were able to spend another super evening/night at the Fishermans Cot. Having arrived late afternoon, we were immediately made to feel welcome. Having been furnished with our room keys, we were given a table with super views of the river. With a number of great ales to choose from (both foreign and local), it was great to 'wind down' with the super views. Whilst the table service must cause an additional strain on the staff (it was certainly not shown). The staff were very attentive and helpful. Our meal was great, the traditional 'prawn cocktail' was plentiful , followed by mains of 'Hunters Chicken' and Scampi and chips with Halloumi fries as an extra. The food as always was very pleasant with prompt and helpful service. This stay was due to a work trip. Whilst we have stayed at other local places (prior to finding the Fishermans Cot), this is now our place of choice. We were unable to stay due to premises upgrades in January (this year). Our stay elsewhere did not tick the boxes, so it was great to get back to this super pub.I am hugely looking forward to our next two night stay in November.

Lovely place to stay for a few nights, stayed in room 20 which is a lovely large ground floor room with patio doors to table and chairs on an outside patio. Had breakfast here each morning which on both occasions was beautiful and good value for money. Service is excellent and the staff were all very friendly and helpful. Tables are well spaced out and there’s plenty of sanitizers around. We felt very happy and comfortable eating inside. There is a large partly covered outside area too for when the weather is a bit warmer. One way system is well thought out too for COVID requirements . It’s a lovely view through the windows of the old road bridge and wide river as it goes over a small weir, plus there’s usually a heron resident on the far side. Had a really nice stay here again, and will be back again next year. All very well laid out and thought through to make your visit as safe as possible. Whilst staying there is no room cleaning each day to preserve your “bubble” and we were given a “goodie bag” containing tea and coffee, and biscuits for use in your room. Fish and Chips in a restaurant focussing on fish, with Fisherman in the title and next to a river, should not taste bland. I have been to the Fishermans Cot a few times when down in Devon visiting friends over the past few years, it's a great location and WAS a great place to grab a bite to eat and a drink....previously! The food was never amazing it was just okay but the location made it worth the visit...but not any more. The food is terrible, bland, tasteless and terrible quality. I could not even eat the meat it was so fatty and like rubber, the mash taste of powder and the veg was dirty and overcooked....and it's not cheap prices. To add to this the tables were dirty and sticky and the staff wouldn't collect the plates from the tables! Totally absurd like the left hand has no idea what the right is doing, they even have one way system around the pub..yet dirty tables and chairs and old glasses left on the tables they seat you at. The staff seemed friendly although when I complained about my food, I went quietly to them and told them of my issue, the waitress then came over to my table and very loudly advised me about my replacement and apologised about my pie and then asked one of our other party members if his pie was okay!! Then they talked about it so loudly behind me I could hear of word they were saying which made it a little uncomfortable. Then my replacement (a salad) took 40 minutes to arrive (they didn't charge for it though, but not the point really). They need to sort out their hygiene of tables and chairs and the pub needs a good regular clean, they need to get more organised and kitchen staff and whoever purchases and cooks that ghastly food needs a review.

I've been here many times but probably won't go again. I was initially impressed with the one way system and found an empty table which had used glasses on. I stood nearby and waited for someone to clear and clean but eventually had to go and ask at the bar to which I was given a negative response saying they can't approach occupied tables I then had to explain myself that the previous customers had left before I arrived...appalling customer service why would you question cleaning a table? I called in a week later and again had to ask. This is basic hygiene and you should have this as a priority as soon as a table becomes vacant.

Alex and Charlotte who looked after us were chatty and friendly too. We had a burger and gammon steak, then treated ourselves to a slice of lemon muffin cheesecake each, truly delicious. Well worth a visit.

We have driven past the fishermans cot quote a few times, but never stopped. However we decided as both being off of work we would visit and have a bit to eat.The staff were friendly and very professional. The food is amazing. I would rate the burger I had within my top 3. The bacon on top was the right level of crispy and the burger was succulent and tender. The chips were a good sized portion. The scampy was excellent and the portion again was a very good size.Sitting outside by the river and eating was such an enjoyable experience and we cannot wait to go back.

Lots of friends and neighbours have eaten here so thought we would give it a try. Quite disappointed both in the menu choices and quality of food. My cod and chips was only just hot enough as it had been served on a cold plate. My husbands burger looked as though it had literally been thrown on the plate. He asked for a pint of Pedigree but apparently they didnt have any.....no pedigree in a marston's pub....really? On the plus side our waitress was pleasant and efficient and the social distancing rules were clearly explained with good visible signage. Would I go back or recommend to a friend? Probably not.

Trish and I last stayed here on our honeymoon in 1982. As we were staying fairly locally, we decided to have a night here on the way home. We were not disappointed. We had a lovely ground floor room, which was spotlessly clean and had a king sized bed. All the staff were bright, cheerful, attentive, helpful and well trained - a great credit to Marstons Inns and the local manager for selecting the right staff and training them properly. Well done. Breakfast - the works - was unbeatable and were were asked no less than three times whether we needed anything else ! We are so glad we decided to return.

My Dad had recommended this place to me and so it only felt right that we tried it out. For starters, the location is absolutely beautiful and you should make some time to enjoy the surroundings outside if the weather allows for it. We were a little surprised to find out that they stopped serving carveries at 5 pm which is when we were booked in for, but fortunately, arriving 10 mins earlier meant we managed to grab two junior carveries and one adult, all having turkey as that was all that was left. We also weren't aware that we were not allowed to serve up our own meals and that they were prepared for us.That said, neither of these niggles detracted from the quality of the food which was unsurpassed in my opinion. I asked the lady serving up our carveries to serve the gravy in a separate jug which she kindly did for us. The portions were very good, larger than I was expecting and extremely tasty. We could tell that a lot of care has been taken to ensure that the produce is at its best and this can be tasted. The baby carrots were simply beautiful as was the stuffing and carrot and swede mash. We didn't really need to plate up our own food as pretty much everything we desired was on our plates. No wonder the pub was busy, it was an excellent meal, and I strongly advise that you book to guarantee a space. I would highly recommend this pub.

We use this pub frequently, this week, I noticed that a transaction for £22.50 had debited my account although the pub said it wouldn't as their card machine crashed whilst in use. On the day, we paid cash so had now paid twice.I called the pub and spoke with BOBBY who said if I visit, he'll refund. I confirmed he's refund the cash to which he said yes. Upon arrival, Bobby had literally dozens of reasons why he wanted me to accept vouchers, I refused. He asked if I'd like to argue it out with another manager to which I accepted. When he walked off to get said manager, he obviously thought the door had already closed behind him because he said "What an absolute ar**hole"! I challenged him immediately and he denied it. The other manager came through to speak with me and Bobby became very confrontational. She sent Bobby away, apologised and gave me my refund.I'd also point out that in our last two visits, the pub has been far dirtier than normal, very little attention paid to clearing outside tables and a general feeling of being not welcome. Saddens me to say, but there are friendlier pubs locally with just as good food however perhaps not in such a picturesque setting.I have emailed Marstons CEO to report Bobby's abuse and am awaiting a response.

Found this place by pure accident but glad we did. We were greeted and told about the rules about the one way system by a lovely helpful welsh chap. We were shown to the bar and ordered our drinks and chose to sit on a bar table as outside was busy. We were served by another nice male staff member on the bar who also was very helpful he had short hair a beard and stocky. What a place this is... amazing we had a great time Even tho it was busier than normal due to the Wednesday eat out government thing. But from the welcome we had till the moment we left a credit to the place thanks again folks Eric & Wendy

Me and my partner stayed here for 3 nights for our anniversary and we couldn't recommend it enough. We planned on eating at different restaurants every day but after eating here on the first night we ended up having 2 evening meals and 2 breakfasts there as the food was so nice. We had 50% off food because of the eat out to help out scheme but would have been more than happy paying the full price for the food. The halloumi fries were amazing!! The room was lovely with everything we needed and was clean and tidy, we even had a little private garden which was handy in the evenings. The staff... Wow.. never been anywhere before where the staff were so nice! The manager Juanita was so helpful and made sure we had a fab time. Every staff member was friendly and polite. We didn't meet a single member of staff who we didn't like. I was a bit wary going here after reading reviews but we cant wait to book again! Thanks for a fab few days!!

Visited as a couple on Sunday evening for a treat. It is only pub grub but I think it Should be a bit better. Very well organised COVID wise and very good service but the surroundings were so much better than the product. Fish and chips and lasagne ordered and had barely sat back down and they arrived. Not a good thing at all as it gives the impression that food is standing around. The chips obviously had been so they brought more which were fine. The garlic bread with the lasagne was really poor. Not hot and no taste or smell of garlic. The lasagne tasted good and the fish was ok. I think they must use the same supplier as spoons as it was identical but twice the price. So all in all not too impressed with the food but the people and surroundings are really good.

Well it’s been a close down for 4 months, but maybe that wasn’t enough to get ready for opening?Three of us turned up at a 3 O’clock Sunday reservation, shown to our table ordered drinks. We were told that there was only enough of our chosen gin for one person......Well there is plenty more others to choose from and there was that long awaited Sunday roast moments away .. Wrong , next we are told there is no meat left to serve any more Sunday roast........ how can you run out within only three hours of opening.. sorry but that’s pretty rubbish when you travel 35 miles .... great place to go lovely surroundings, sort yourselves out F.C.

Room was large, spotlessly clean and beautiful view of river. The staff who are obviously working under difficult conditions where friendly, helpful and nothing was too much trouble. Covid 19 regulations very clear and fully explained. Food was delicious. We just loved it and will be back again. Thanks to all the staff for making it a trip to remember.

I called ahead to see if they served all day food. We arrived at 2.30 and ordered 2 steak pies with chips & veg. The food arrived within a couple of minutes. The pie was obviously warmed in the microwave as it was soggy, the chips were cold and the veg were not fresh. We asked for hot chips which they gave us. It is disappointing that the food served at 2.30pm was obviously not of the same standard if we had arrived earlier in the day.

The Fisherman's Cot was our first trip out after the lifting of the lock-down, we were greeted by Anna who always has a smile on her face, welcoming us back with "virtual" opening arms. Shown to our table, (a lovely window seat) Michelle was going to be "looking after" us and what a fantastic job she did! Approaching the table informing us about the new "one-way" system as well as other Covid related information, what today's soup was, and any menu items that were not available. We ordered drinks, we were recommended a double Quince gin with an Elder-flower tonic - WOW! It was amazing. We were offered starters, but declined as I'd already seen a sweet I wanted. Our meals arrived hot and within good timing. We went on to sweets and finished our evening with another gin, sitting outside in the garden with the gorgeous view of the water. Such an amazing evening, with a MASSIVE thank-you to Anna, Michelle & the rest of the team.

Just about to leave the Fishermans Cot after a two night stay; 8th and 9th July. Our 1st visit and definitely not our last! It was the break to recharge our batteries that we both needed. The location is beautiful, right next to the River Exe.We walked to Bickleigh Mill just over the bridge and then enjoyed the walk along the River Exe.On both evenings we ate in the restaurant. As the Fisherman’s Cot has only just reopened the menu is limited, but the food absolutely lovely.....we tried the steak and the steak and ale pie.We stayed in room number 3 which was lovely and a real bargain at £60 per night! The room was immaculately clean, very comfortable and we slept so well both nights.Overall, we loved our stay and will definitely be back...However what makes this place so special are the the team of people who work here; all so friendly and they made our stay even more enjoyable. All the bar staff were lovely as was CJ ( the New Zelander! ) who served us on the 2nd night. But special mention has to go to Bob; what a lovely guy! So friendly, he made us feel so welcome from the minute we arrived, from showing us to our room, to chatting in the bar and also recommending walks. He is a real credit to the Fisherman’s Cot!Thank you Bob; you made our stay!Sharon & Jeff ( Cardiff )

Pub is lovely and well kept, Food was very nice and just the right amount. Obviously with it being so close to the river and the lay out etc you expect to pay a little more but felt it was slightly over priced. Also only one bloke on the bar on a Saturday t time isn't great. Overall an enjoyable visit but probably only go back for drinks and to watch the river flow.

I visited the Fisherman's Cot for a meal with friends last night and was looking forward to a great meal. The venue is a lovely place right bt the rapid flowing rive. We ordered the chicken wings with the two different flavours (Korean style bbq and fruity chilli). The menu describes the chicken wings as coated with the sauces but in fact they were simply plain chicken wings with separate pots of the sauce, so no real flavour was notable there. This was followed by the cod and chips. The chips were fairly plain, dry and one of our party stated 'rubbery'. The actual cod for all four of us were more like a child's portion. I've never seen cod so small. In fact each piece was a tail end so quite thin and measures between 5 to 6 inches in total. I'm sorry to leave such a poor review regarding the food but at £12 per portion, this was most definitely less than acceptable. If you must go there to eat, I suggest eating something different.

Great late lunch with family, biggest haddock I have ever seen. Had that locally caught ling, calamri and my wife just cheesy chips. All with crispy fresh batter, chips golden but soft inside. Even cheesy chips were top, 1/2 chips, then cheese, more chips and topping of more cheese. All top quality, even the ice cream and with nice pints of Otter, bitter & ale on tap. Great way to end off long walk on the beach. You won’t be disappointed..

I loved this pub. We walked from Salcombe and it was well worth it (don't worry, you can drive there too). It had the feel of a genuine pub with some good beers that happened to do great food also. I had possibly the best burger I have had in a long time and my wife had a fantastic steak sandwich. Both were freshly prepared scratch. They have vegan options too. I notice some negative reviews, mostly due to poor service. We arrived at 12 noon on a weekday in October. Even so, the place was full by the time we left, so it is clearly a popular place. The service we experienced was without fault. I hope our experience is the norm.
