Fish on the Green in Maidstone

Booked this restaurant for my partners birthday. We had visited on another occasion and were very impressed. On this occasion the food was, once again, excellent and we were thoroughly enjoying our experience until a young waiter approached us and said " I'm going to need your table back in a minute". Totally ruined our evening, very rude and disappointing.

This most delicious fish and chips joints in Newington green.The staffs a very kind and good customer services .nice and tasty fish and chips especially the chicken burgers are wonderful.

Great people, excellent service food always made fresh and tasty also is very satisfying best fish bar in the area.

Have been several times and have never been disappointed. The food is beautifully cooked and presented and tastes divine. The young waiting staff are all helpful and a lovely bunch . Take a visit!

The food was exceptional. Everything we ate was beautifully cooked and presented. But, as a dining experience it was pretty awful. The building is basically a hollow wood & stone box with nothing to absorb any sound. The waitress struggled to hear our order, having to repeat ourselves several times. Almost impossible to sustain a conversation which made the hour it took for our starters to arrive feel twice as long. We wouldn't go back.

We used to love this restaurant but the food was a big let down this time - waitress seemed to be impatient and the ambiance was disappointing

We haven't been for a while being regulars in the past. It was ok.. not bad but just not as good as it used to be. Always felt it was on the edge of a Michelin star, now a long way off. Just the little extras were missing, fresh bread and olives now £8.50 used to be complimentary and so much better, butter now was probably a spread. Food always used to be wow...now just good/ok.

Our favourite place to visit for family celebrations as we know the food will always be fantastic!

Very enjoyable lunch time meals

It’s been a while now since we ate here but boy it was worth the break! Everything we had to eat was superb, the waiting staff were excellent and the whole experience was outstanding! Oh by the way the wine list was also good and plenty of choice to match up with the food ! Well done everyone at the Fish on the Green especially the chief it won’t be so long before the next time ! Faultless……. Impressed with everything here. The sea bass and monk fish were especially good. Will be returning without hesitation.

I’ve waited years to go here. Fish on the Green has always had a great reputation and I finally got round to trying it with family. This place does not disappoint. Delicious food (try the monkfish) and lovely staff. Can’t wait to return and try more from the menu!

Excellent food as ever. We were very pleased with the service which was welcoming and attentive. Our previous visit had been disappointing as regards service but not the meal: this time all was well and we experienced the high standards we had been used to.

As a local this is a restaurant we’ve visited many times before but I very much doubt will do so in the future. We quite literally could not near ourselves talk for a large table who shouted at the top of their voices non stop. The staff were aware of our displeasure and moved us to another table further away. Although it was better the noise persisted but just slightly further away. Quite clearly the volume they were consuming was importantl to the bottom line of the restaurant relative to our 2 meals.Such a shame the table had a “party” at the expense of all the other customers. The meal was good and bad. The shellfish cocktail was exceptional followed by an overcooked halibut at £32 which was average to poor. With that and the noise dessert and coffee was a NO. Whilst I appreciate a big spender is great for the restaurant and a 2 piece average spender is ok it does not encourage a revisit when you’re spending serious money and can’t hold a conversation

Had the 3 course set lunch. Excellent value for money. Beautifully cooked fish, excellent fish soup and a chocolate cheesecake ( which was probably a cheesecake too far ) Good friendly service, relaxed atmosphere. All in all a very good experience and somewhere we will return to. Booking is advisable, this is a small restaurant. There is plenty of parking in the car park and street.

One of the best restaurants in Kent. Good food and service. The only problem is the noise level due to lack of soft furnishings. This is a complaint I have to make in virtually all reviews i submit.

Really fantastic food and service but they added an extra beer to my bill and overcharged me by £8 on the risotto.

The 4.8 reviews don’t do it justice, the food was excellent. The service was excellent and have to say the change in menu with fresh ingredients really showcases the skills of the chefs and the limited seating means the quality control was on point I would happily come again this will deffo be a monthly treat. Service - as attentive as they can be for an understaffed establishment Atmosphere - nice enough, quaint Food - even at half the price it would be mediocre food. Way overpriced for what you get. Middling fish with pale chips, sour fish soup and overcooked fillet.

Sunday lunch. One starter. 4 X fish and chips. 2 X house wines two small beers 3 puddings one latte. £184. Not worth the money.

Been a regular customer for 10 years and have to say this was the worst experience. The restaurant has not been the same since it was sold to Shepard Neame, no specials , reduced menu. However, the service was always good. Today, service was awful ….Not attentive , constantly asking for plates removed , glasses removed and to order drinks. We must have been served by 3 or 4 different people. We actually wanted dessert but just gave up as the guy never came back with the menu. I finally had to walk up to pay. Really sad to see the demise of a great place.

Unfortunately it wasn't the best experience. The last time I visited there was a good atmosphere, it felt very flat. Food was nice but to be honest it was so tiny. Sea bass, tiny crushed potato disc, 2 baby leeks the size of 3 green beans. The bread portion was 4 tiny bits with two crust ends. The table next to us had 4 normal middle slices of bread. I had ice cream and no sugar wafer sticks, just a bit plain. When the booked was reconfirmed it would have been useful to be told the rd was closed. Had to go through thd village, turn round and sit in traffic lights again.

Not the fine dining experience it used to be. Went for lunch. Ordered from the main menu. Raw, undercooked, pale chips. Thermidor sauce not the same quality as previously. Mix up with the vegetables. Unattentive staff. Had to hunt for sugar. Been twice in the past year now for both dinner and lunch and, sadly, I think I'll be going elsewhere from now on.

We had a fabulous lunch here today, scallops, pan-fried hake & a very delicate panna cotta. It was my birthday & they brought out a plate with happy birthday written in chocolate with a candle in some ice cream. Very thoughtful

i Have been going to the Fish for years poss 40 or 50 times stunning small place. grate food BUT last time we went there all dressed smart as you would expect. apart from one man at the table next to us, he seemed to be with his wife and another couple. large man way over 6 feet tale, but looked a real scruff, looked like he had been begging on the streets of Maidstone, , if that is now the way, you are letting scuff bags in we will not go back. he should have been stopped at the door and told to go change Mr Fish you have let me down

Last night we enjoyed a fabulous meal at Fish on the Green. The food and service were excellent as usual. The Dover sole was superb as was the Halibut. Thank you for a great evening.

Food was good, albeit a limited menu compared to the good old days, and no specials board. Completely new staff and the service was poor and unprofessional. Clearly the team have not been trained to work in a quality restaurant and spoiled the experience. The bill was over £900 for none people and included a 10% service charge, which in hindsight we should have refused to pay. We have used The Fish regularly since it opened but will not be returning any time soon.

We came in on Tuesday for my birthday meal. It was absolutely fantastic. Oyster rockelfeller were amazing. My goats cheese soufflés out of this world, same with my partners crab tart! The halibut and the pork belly were great. Unfortunately, we had no space for a dessert but will definitely be back. Thanks to Lucy and Gemma for taking such a fantastic care of us. We will see you soon!

Exceptional food! Small Resturant with a varied menu . The fish pie was amazing. Felt a little bit rushed by the waiter at the end and also he didn’t offer us to taste the wine before pouring which was odd. Will definitely return. X

The food and service were very good. Unfortunately the was a table with some people who got louder and louder the more they drank which took the edge of our existence a bit. Would definitely go again.

The food was superb. However, the service was really poor for a high end restaurant. It appeared leaderless. We had to ask several times for drinks, to take our order etc, The (young) staff didn't seem bothered in the slightest, couldn't raise a smile, were not at all welcoming and more interested in looking at their phones! Waiting time was ridiculous as the restaurant was only half full. I assume you don't have a manager on site. Such a pity. You really do need to do a lot better then this. I don't normally write reviews but felt compelled to on this occasion. Service a massive let down.

I’ve eaten here many times and as usual the food was amazing! Fish pie is to die for and almond treacle tart - Wow!

As a family we have been to this restaurant a number of times but todays visit was poor to say the least. From ordering the main course to it being delivered was at least 90 minutes. The restaurant was not busy, in fact there were a few empty tables. The standard cod and chips was nice, but the chips were quite dry. At no time were we offered any other condiments. Desserts were reasonable and arrived fairly promptly. Coffees were awful! Cappuccino had no foam, in fact we had to ask what it was! We were told the coffee machine wasn’t working correctly and were told , “ we’ve asked for another one”. More coffees were delivered but honestly were not nice. Tea was delivered to one of our party and without being asked it was Earl Grey not English breakfast tea as expected. Still had to ask for milk. Chocolates are part of the coffee order but six between 4 of us.. is this one and a half each? At £3.50 for a coffee and chocolates, seriously overpriced Overall, the families opinion of lunch today was “it was okay”. Due to the cost and the poor service we won’t be returning.

I have been using this restaurant for innumerable years now and unsure why have never taken the time to write a review, there are staff still here from when I had my first meal. The staff, food and service is outstanding, we always look forward to our trip from London to Bearstead. Well done to all at Fish On The Green. See you soon. This review should have been placed at the time of our first visit many years ago.

Disappointed after really looking forward to this. No heating on a cold day. Poor and slow service, had to ask for a drink (twice), at a time when only two and three tables were occupied. Staff appeared leaderless. Fish pie bulked out with egg, once I’d taken the egg out it amounted to a third of the pie, which was on the small side and devoid of fish. Food tasty despite this. Not worth the travel from Bromley.

Visited Fish on the Green for birthday get together. Easily on par with the big West End names: J Sheekey, Bentley's and Scott's of Mayfair. The restaurant was perfectly understated as were the staff. Just the right level of attentiveness. Has some fantastic oysters, shellfish cocktail and lemon sole. Will sure to be back very soon..

Lovely choice of Fish dishes but also caters for non fish eaters, very friendly staff and a lovely place to go for a special occasion

Ordered Whole lobster thermidor meal advertised on the Al a cart menu A very small lobster arrived, no claws attached or meat from them and small amount of tail meat mixed in the sauce. Not the "whole" lobster I was expecting so wording on menu misleading and not worth the £45 cost which is a shame because what I did have tasted very good. I suspect that some of my "whole" lobster may have been put into the menus mixed shellfish starter consisting of fresh lobster meat, langoustin, crab and prawns. My wife had had 2 courses off the set lunch menu and was happy with her fishcake starter and steamed plaice fillet main. I did share my disappointment with the waitress who made excuses for my small amount of lobster meat and 10% discount was given from my total bill.

Found this place (No pun intended) after a web search so we had no background, we love trying new places blind, and what an amazing evening we had, we arrived a little early but that was no problem we were seated straight away, the place is spotless and they have not forced tables in, we had plenty of room, as it is quite a small intimate place. The service - The service was excellent the servers were happy and friendly we were never rushed, nor at anytime did we feel like we were waiting, we were treated like we had been going there for years. Just perfect. The Food - it is a fish restaurant which is tough, but the quality of the food was superb, cooked to perfection and wonderfully balanced portions, we both had the mixed starter and I had the sole there is an excellent choice and the deserts were amazing. Really can't find a con here at all and we will be returning. Thank you for a lovely evening.

The food was lovely and the staff were great. We had dinner with my Dad who stuggles to hear (even with a hearing aid). The ceiling and wall surfaces are very hard and the reflected noise made it very uncomfortable for him. Some furnishings or wall coverings would have helped dampen the noise.

Amazing food and wonderful service. Fixed lunch menu great. Lobster fabulous. Only issue is that there is absolutely no atmosphere. Large group next to us who looked like regulars drowned us out a bit too.

Sehr feines Fisch und Meeresfrüchte Restaurant im Zentrum von Bearsted (Kent). Wir hatten zur Vorspeise Austern aus Jersey und als Hauptgang Lobster Termidor bzw. Seezunge. Alles war sehr frisch und schmackhaft. Die Weinliste ist recht umfangreich mit vernünftigen Preisen. Das Service Personal war sehr nett und hilfsbereit. Dieses Restaurant ist nicht billig, aber die Preise sind wegen der einwandfreien Produkte und des guten Services gerechtfertigt. Wer Lust auf ein gutes Fisch- / Mererfrüchte Restaurant der gehobenen Mittelklasse hat, dem sei das Fish on the Green sehr empfohlen. Unbedingt reservieren.

Good food and service, but quite expensive. Prices have jumped dramatically in the last few months.

Thoroughly enjoyed our anniversary lunch here with our son and daughter-in-law - we were served by staff who were attentive but not intrusive - full marks there. I particularly enjoyed fresh juicy oysters to start with, followed by shellfish cocktail, then a tasty lemon sole - great combination. The staff became aware we were celebrating an anniversary so prepared a 'happy anniversary' desert to conclude with - lovely touch.

Excellent quality food and service.

The staff were very pleasant. The food was of good quality and taste. The restaurant is not that big so booking is preferable. Most dishes are fish based but I think steak is available as an alternative. Limited parking around the green.

If the portion was a bit larger

From the warm welcome when we entered the restaurant to the delivery of the bill we could not fault the service and attention. The food was just as amazing as we’d heard, word of mouth being the best form of advertising, in my opinion. Our meal was delivered to our table with a friendly smile and each course had a sensible space of time between them It was brilliant to find one of our favourite English wines on the menu Three Choirs Coleridge hill even if it isn’t one of the more local wines. Our seafood cocktail starter was delightful and beautiful as well as tasty. We both chose the Halibut with Parmesan crust served with lemon and chive infused new potatoes, wilted spinach and tomatoes in a Provençal style. I indulged in the Sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream ice cream, wow! Delicious! My husband chose the Buttermilk panna cotta with strawberry coulis. Of course we both stole a spoonful of each others dessert! Helen, Ellie and Euan were very attentive as our servers and knowledgeable of the wonderful menu. We cannot wait to have a reason to visit again.

This has to be one of the best fish restaurants we have ever eaten in and we have been in many. The atmosphere was relaxed and calm and very clean and smart. The staff were just fantastic. Very polite and nothing too much trouble. As for the food, when they say fresh fish they mean fresh fish and perfectly cooked. Portions were of a good size and perfectly presented. We really cannot find fault in this fabulous restaurant and will definitely be back. If you are in the surrounding area it is well worth the short drive or taxi fare. They have outside tables for warmer evenings that look out onto the green. Always busy so ensure you book. They do offer meat courses but go for the excellent choice of fish.

We came here on a busy Saturday evening when our hotel restaurant was full.. And I'm glad it was otherwise we'd not have had such a wonderful meal at Fish on the Green. Staff were very accommodating and gave us a nice table. Starters of salmon with horseradish and pickled cucumber were beautiful. Mains of halibut in parmesan crust and lobster thermidor were excellent with sides of greens, spinach and triple cooked chips spot on. Will definitely go again when we're back in the area.

Excellent meal, very clean attractive venue. My only slight surprise was less fish dishes to choose from than I'd imagined. Good also therefore for customers who don't really like fish as much. It was a Wednesday evening though so maybe this had some baring on that. Wine selection was very good. Staff were delightful. Exceptional olives!

Food was OK but felt the seafood cocktail was frozen packet as it never had any taste apart from the lobster. I may be wrong but that's what it felt like. Rest of dinner was OK. Over priced for the quality of the food. Shame had much better food here before. It wasn't busy as we was first in but was still waiting with empty glasses for a while I had to find waitress to ask for another drink. I won't be returning such a shame

Went yesterday for a long lunch - had cauliflower soup and the lobster - Cannot fault this food and I and my friends are from the food industry - Service excellent - friendly but not over familiar - Great restaurant !

Right from the moment I picked up the phone to book a table of 2 the staff where happy and very helpful. We arrived as I’m stunned by how small this restaurant really is! With from what I could see a maximum of 12-15 tables. This is excellent though because the staff can give everyone all the time in the world. Seated myself and Louis where offered Sparkling or Still water and some nibbles of Bread, Olives and Gherkins which where very nice. For starters I went with the Cured Citrus Salmon with Louis having the Mackerel, in my cousins own words “This is the first starter to make me truly excited for my main.” He was right. This is a seafood restaurant but also has a Shoulder of Lamb on the lunch menu (which we chose from) for people who may not want just fish. I myself am a MEAT MAN and went for the Lamb with Louis going for the good old Fish An Chips. Louis was stunned not only by the chips but the homemade TarTar sauce that was not too pungent. I was stunned by how soft and creamy the sauté potatoes where and delicious the wild garlic pesto with the meat. I chose the wine to pair with our main mean after we both had a beer (only on bottles, no draught) which was a beautiful Boonaburra Shiraz for my Lamb and a smooth but crisp Sancerre for my cousins Fish. We swept the plate and couldn’t find any room for dessert but I will be back for that!! When given the bill there was no service charge at all, later finding out they only put on for large tables? So I rounded it up as it is well deserved. As a summary the staff where happy and helpful not being pushy making you feel at home. The restaurant makes you feel like you are in a fine dining Fish an Chip shop!! Which I thought was excellent. Reasonable price with a extensive wine list. Highly recommended

Went for lunch on Saturday beautiful meal and faultless service. I had the cauliflower soup. It was incredible. My wife had the salmon and she had the fish and chips and I had the hake followed by apple and rhubarb crumble with cream, never disappoints...

Nice restaurant, obviously fish orientated, but a lamb and beef main option too. Nice wine selection and not extortionately expensive. Good service. Had lots of the usual fish, but also some less usual stuff too - I had the Stone bass for example. All beautifully...

First time here, I’ve avoided it previously as I’m not a lover of fish. However, I do love duck, and it was on the menu so we decided to give it a go on a Saturday lunch time. Wow! What an absolutely amazing gem this...

ate here for my sister-in-laws Birthday, mushroom soup I had was wonderful, we all had different starters and mains, all great would recommend to all. It was spoilt by somebody scraping our car through careless driving in the car park, but that can happen anywhere, not any fault of this great restaurant.

Went to FOTG last night for my partner's birthday and it was a fabulous night. The food was truly beautiful and the quality was top notch. Choice of wines was very varied and good quality too. Atmosphere was buzzing, every table full. Would go again...

There was a table of 8 which really should be kept separate from the man area. It’s a very small restaurant with low ceilings and sound travels so don’t put a table of 2 on a birthday celebration there. They knew it wasn’t right as...

Cannot fault this restaurant. Occasion was my husband's birthday......Food was amazing....very cosy and not crammed in....our waitress Lucy was informative and always smiling. Been a couple of times and will not hesitate to return..... Fantastic
