Dropped in for lunch today and had probably the best meal I’ve ever eaten in a pub. Pan fried fish, cooked to perfection, with sweet pea puree, salty pancetta and small fluffy potatoes, all in perfect balance. It was delicious. Friendly service too. Highly recommended.

Nice tapas style food. Bit odd wine experience..asked for pinot grigio and was given rose and told it was the same. I do know there is a PG blush..but don't like being treated like an idiot by bar staff as they've run out of what I asked...apart from that a good evening out

Very good food at a reasonable price. The wait for the food was quite lengthy but well worth it. I had a tasty liver, bacon and mash with cabbage and tenderstem broccoli together with a delightful jus. This was followed by a vanilla creme brulée. Although I didn't come for food on this visit, I have eaten here before and found what comes from their kitchen to always be excellent. Drinks-wise though, the First In Last Out (FILO), has its own brewery, and they sell a fair old selection of ales, 5 of their own, and usually Harvey's Sussex Best as a guest ale. On my last visit I drank their own 4.0% 'Hop Cat' pale bitter, which was very refreshing, and I was told it will be replaced in the coming months with a pale bitter collaboration with another East Sussex brewery, Only With Love. I always receive a friendly welcome, and went away very happy, many thanks.

Fabulous dog friendly pub restaurant in Hastings Old Town with delicious food and amazingly friendly service. FILO is a bit out past the Old Town but is well worth the extra walk. A pub that takes its name from its position at the top of the High Street of the Old Town section of Hastings in that it was the first pub you came to back in the day when you approached the settlement of Hastings from the north and therefore subsequently the last one before you left. A bit out of the was at the top of the old town high street, with its historic houses, quaint shops and very good pubs, of which the FILO is the best and possibly the best pub in Hastings. I certainly didn’t find a better one. Primarily a single room pub, although there is an additional function room / seating area for dining off the corridor to the back, but most of the action takes place in the bar room, with its period décor, comfortable booths and interesting fireplace. I cannot comment on the food because I was here to try the FILO house brewery beers and in that respect all six ale pumps on the bar were in operation for our visit, with the ubiquitous for these parts Harvey’s Sussex Best on one and the FILO Brewery products on the other five. These were Crofters Best Bitter, Old Town Tom Craft Beer, Cardinal Sussex Porter, Gold Premium ale and Churches Pale Ale. We tried the Old Town Tom and The Cardinal Porter and they were both in good condition. As mentioned if there is a better traditional pub in Hastings I didn’t find it (although the Mermaid did run it close), or could not visit it (as the Jolly Fisherman doesn’t open on a Monday or Tuesday.)

Found it hard to find a Sunday roast in Hastings and felt lucky we managed to book a table here. We had high hopes for our meal here as we were told the food was good. Unfortunately one thing was drastically wrong with our lunch. The beef was almost inedible as it was so tough. It looked ok on the plate nice and pink how I like it but it was almost impossible to cut with a knife. I don't mind a good chew so I ploughed on still knowing it wasn't right and my wife didn't want to cause a fuss so pushed it about the plate till the meal was over and it was too late to redeem. As for the rest the potatoes were burnt on the edges and that didn't produce a good taste. The other veg were OK the best being the cauliflower cheese which was actually very nice. We will never be back as we live far away but theres a couple of tips for the chef there. But probably more dissapointing was the reaction from the staff member that we mentioned this to. No real apology, and definately no effort to compensate us for the poor quality of meal.

The food was very good, one had fried cod (they had run out of plaice) and chips served with mint pea sauce (mushy peas?) with salad. Another had pan fried sea bass served with a potato & onion mash with a mustard dill sauce and green beans wrapped in courgette slice i.e. v. well presented (see photos). We had time for coffees served with a biscuit each. Time was limited as we had parked earlier, gone for a walk up East Cliff then returned for a quick lunch. We had a great Sunday family lunch for 10 once again at the Bull. Some of our party are vegetarian and they were catered for by Jason the chef who came out to our table to discuss what was available as one of our group also has an allergy to peppers, he talked through the ingredients that were used & offered to make a vegetarian lasagne which two of the group had & enjoyed very much, the other vegetarian had the veggie burger which was much liked. The rest of our party all had the traditional Sunday roast. The desserts were enjoyed by everybody. Jason returned to check that everything was OK & to check that we all enjoyed our food. This was the first visit by four of our party & like the rest of the group will definitely return as they would like to try the pies that were recommended by others in our group. The staff were friendly & we didn’t feel rushed at any stage. The prices reasonable & Peter was happy for each couple to pay their own bill. There is plenty of car parking at the rear of the pub & also a rear entrance with a ramp. This is our go to place to visit with family, friends & neighbours and happens to be our closest pub & we will continue to visit. It has a very good choice of good pub food, has nice staff, clean toilets & parking. Thanks you to you all.

The Coffee Pod is one of several coffee stops on Hastings seafront open from 8am (see also “Goat Ledge Café” and “Starsky and Hatch”) but has the disadvantage that it is exposed to the elements (wind, rain etc). After seeing a lot of good reviews online decided I must try and visit. In the end we visited twice: once of an early morning coffee, then again for an ice-cream one afternoon. The Coffee Pod seems to be part of Goodmans Barbers and Coffee Spot which is situated in The Courtyard nearby and also on St Leonard’s seafront.
