Everything about this tea room is amazing. The style of the building, the retro tea cups, the wonderful staff. You get exactly what it says on the tin, lovely choice of tea and can decide if you want sandwiches, scones or the cakes (which are wow). Such a charming venue in a lovely location. We had a 5 minute wait for a table. We were seated by the stunning fire place with a view of gardens. Eventually it was time to depart and just when you thought there were no more surprises at the venue the till made an appearance!! I will leave it there and say go visit this tea room to see for yourself and experience a truly wonderful tea room.

Set in the visual heaven that is Penshurst, the tea room ticks every box. And was clearly designed by a tea room perfectionist. The only moanette, made by a picky picky friend, was that the scones weren’t hot. This was swiftly rebuffed by another chum who said that if they had been it would suggest defrosting in the microwave. Lovely, light as air scones. Cool but perfect.

We have frequented Fir Tree House Tea Room for a number of years. It is by far the best tea room in the area and we have tried several. Everything here is made on the premises using local ingredients with an excellent choice of teas. Lovely setting in an old cottage with a pretty, typical English country garden for warmer weather. Highly recommended.

I travel with my partner from central London to visit this tearoom every couple of weeks. The service is friendly, welcoming and normally pretty fast…for a relaxed country location. Choice of sandwiches and cakes is superb and cake choices change regularly. Superb gardens to relax in the summer and beautiful old house in the winter. What more could one want. We arrived at 4.00 on Sunday. The garden was very busy so we decided to go inside as there were several tables free. Upon walking in, a very grumpy middle aged lady shouted "stop" at the top of her voice. "Wait there" she continued to say. At first I thought she must be talking to her dog, she was so aggressive. She went o to explain that they were very busy, and we should wait in the corner. I don't think I have ever experienced anyone in a cafe or restaurant being so rude and aggressive. Naturally we decided not to stay. I felt as though I was in an episode of Faulty Towers.

Visited for an afternoon tea after a walk around the lovely little village of Penshurst. Upon arrival it wasn't immediately obvious how to access the tea room, there is a sign outside asking you to wait to be seated in the garden but the stable door to the tea room was closed but upon asking a member of staff they advised to push the door open and come inside. We were seated immediately by I'm afraid to say a very unfriendly waitress. Bit of a mix up with the sandwich order but not a problem. Tasty homemade scones but were served cold which was a bit of a shame. No clotted cream just whipped single cream but it tasted good. Cakes were also fresh and tasty. Unfortunately, the overall experience was really let down by the stiff and cold atmosphere. Our waitress was frosty and hostile which made us feel very uncomfortable, slamming food on the table and scowling! Such a shame as this is obviously a beautiful tea room with good quality food and drink. Sadly, the frosty and unwelcoming service means we won't be making a return visit in the near future.

The garden was very pretty, however it is situated on a main road so not a lot of parking. Some of the food did look different to the images I previously found online so maybe it has slightly changed in recent years. I had gone because I thought cakes and scones looked delicious that I saw on trip advisor, but many of those cakes weren’t available anymore and it was lemon or fruit cake, which is fine if you like those but I was after the tart with strawberry and cream or the chocolate ones which weren’t available. The scones were disappointing they were your standard fruit scone however I do believe they were home made. The cream was cheap whipped cream and came out warm and the jam was your standard strawberry, so not worth the price. The sandwiches were nice but the bread could have been better it was a bit cheap and soggy, however the fillings were good would recommend the ham and cheese. The drinks were also very nice and the tea was good. Service was quick and the staff all seemed very nice and service was also fast. It was overall a bit disappointing as I had expected more from the images I had seen before I actually tried some of them.

Really lovely tearoom and the garden is beautiful with plenty of seating. We visited with family for drinks/sweet treats. The slices of cake are very generous in size and taste amazing. The scones are also delicious but not very big and I believe we paid £8 for two scones served with jam/cream and coffee for one. I found this rather expensive for the size of them as we've paid less for (bigger) homemade scones elsewhere but as said before they were nice. It was £6 or just over for a slice of cake and tea for one. We would visit again but probably stick to the cakes. I've also read other reviews regarding not very welcoming/talkative waitresses and I have to agree. The young lady who served us wasn't very friendly, not rude but could've been a lot more welcoming as it makes a big difference to the experience.

Been going here since I was a kid. I have fond memories having a cream tea inside the house on a cold, autumnal afternoon with the log fire brining, or in their beautiful garden on a warm summer’s day. All cakes, scones, sandwiches and jams are homemade and taste great. It is a favourite location of mine to take friends and family to, including American relatives, for them to experience a traditional cream tea in the beautiful Kent countryside.

Yummy food! The scones are so light and fluffy. The homemade cake selection is great and the sandwich selection too. I am so glad that a friend recommended this place to me that I decided to take my parents 4 days later! Afternoon tea- Fairly pricy some might say, but for £14.50 for one person it is worth a round of sandwiches with a filling of your choice, a generous slice of cake and two scones with jam and cream and a big pot of tea. Can’t wait to take my husband here!

The best part of this tearoom is how simple the food is but how well it has been executed. The sandwiches are made to order, they are fresh and have so much filling in them. The scones are small but you can get 2 each for the traditional afternoon tea and that is more than enough. The cakes are the best ever - Light fluffy sponge and always so fresh. It’s a little pricey but really really good. The staff are friendly but without being on top of you and the whole gardens and inside area are quaint and not trying too hard. I would definitely return.

We have been coming to this delightful tea room for over 20 years and it never disappoints. Gorgeous country garden setting in the heart of a picture postcard English village, you’re already onto a winner before you’ve even sat down! It’s been run by the same people for 35 years and it shows in the tried and tested format. No frills, no poncy twiddly little petit fours type cakes, just good honest food: delicious sandwiches with a nice range of flavours, scones so light it’s like biting into a cloud, homemade jam in interesting flavours (this time we hit the jackpot with the most amazing gooseberry jam made from the owners’ homegrown gooseberries, last time we had a delicious plum jam) and a generous slice of cake to finish. I make cakes for a living and am very fussy, but these are right up there with the best I’ve tasted, and again come in an interesting range of flavours. This is what afternoon tea should be like . Thank you for another great experience and obviously we’ll be back.

Having driven past these tea rooms many times, visiting was on my to do list. I love every Tudor and Penshurst is a lovely village, and I'd heard good things about this place. But with no menu available online, I wasn't sure exactly what to expect. The tea room is open 2:30 - 6pm, and we arrived at 3pm ish. The waitress wasn't particularly talkative, she handed us menus and left us to it. We sat in the garden (which are very pleasant), and the same waitress came and brought us tea cups without a word - we also had to go and find her to order as she didn't seem bothered coming to ask us. The menu itself is on the pricey side - £7.20 for two scones and tea.I thought well this will be okay if the scones are nice and reasonably sized. Well they weren't - the scones are tiny and the tea room only does plain scones, no fruit or cheese. It was a total rip off, and upon paying, the waitress took the money and didn't even say thank you.Such a disappointment - will not be returning.

I went here with some friends over the April bank holiday. We were kept waiting to be seated in the garden while the staff walked past us without any acknowledgement of us. The person who was either the owner or the manager did exactly the same. Once seated the staff served us with the minimal amount of communication - surprisingly the afternoon tea was left with us without one word spoken...not even a 'enjoy your tea'. The afternoon was nothing to write home about - tea and standard scone.

We've been to the Fir Tree House Tearooms several times before after taking a walk over the hill on the Penshurst estate. To my mind, that walk has to rank in my top 5 favourites ever. The tea rooms are sadly only open Wednesdays to Sundays and they actually close on 28th October until March 2019. It is a small family concern and I think it’s not a profitable option to open more. We ALWAYS sit in the garden with its hotchpotch selection of garden tables, benches and chairs. It’s a delightful little oasis in which to spend a hour sipping tea and sampling the teabread, scones or cakes. It’s not the cheapest place but that’s really not a problem. It’s in JUST the right place, at the end of an invigorating walk and you really can’t complain about £10.40 for a huge pot of tea for 2 and 4 slices of the day’s teabread. Absolute heaven! But if you plan to visit, they only open 2.30pm to 6pm, Wed-Sun inclusive and close on Sunday 28th which means you’d better get your boots on sharpish as today’s the 20th! Go on....give yourself a real treat...AND feel the self-satisfaction of getting excellent exercise thrown in free!! And the views from the top of that hill are.... well exceptional... incredible....spirit-raising. 8 days only left to get that WOW feeling.

. . . Ignore all these people who have mentioned 'dry cake' or scones served without cream....they don't know what they're talking about quite honestly. We have been going to Fir Trees for around the last fifteen years or so...I should mention we are not friends of the owners...but I would like to say that it has always been very very good. The cakes are always freshly baked with a good selection on offer and almost always are served up warm - so they're not long out of the oven more often than not. The scones are the same...almost always warm with fresh cream and home made jam.If you go in the colder months when opening times are restricted you'll be offered home made soup and freshly baked bread of the highest quality accompanied by crackling open fires - just the ticket after a long autumn or winter walk. The experience here though is always pleasant and service is friendly...never has it been otherwise and that is coming from regular customers over a span of fifteen years or more.

Cream tea is probably my favourite indulgence, and this was without a doubt the worst Ive ever had. The scones were small and looked like they'd come from a supermarket, but the worst thing was the fact that they were not served with clotted cream. This in my opinion means it was not a genuine cream tea. They have enough passing trade from Penshurst to fill all the seats but I can't imagine anyone returning. What a shame that such an English institution such as cream tea is turned into a money-making operation with not a care for the quality of the experience.

I like the quirky way you can't see the cake and you pick from the list. So far all the cake has been lovely. One of my friends went for the scones and they were okay - quite small and not very fluffy. I would recommend choosing a cake option. They normally have a gluten free cake too.

We've often taken an exhilarating walk around the Penshurst Place estate but have always ended up arriving at the Fir Tree House Tearooms when it was closed.Yippee! Today it was open. As we entered they asked if we wanted indoors or in the garden. As it was a 26 degree C day, we chose outdoors. Next choice. Would we like a table in the sun or in the shade. I started to take a liking to this place immediately. We chose shade and got shown to a table with 3 chairs with dappled shade. This was getting better by the minute. A waitress arrived with cups, saucers, side plates etc and left us menus to peruse. Shortly she returned and reeled of a list as long as your arm of different cakes available. We chose raspberry and something sponge and coffee and walnut. Next a choice of over a dozen specialty teas. But settled for English breakfast and a cafetiere of coffee plus a local Leigh ice cream. Tea came in a huge pot for one that had a good 4 cups in it plus you got a jug of hot water to top it up! The garden was glorious! The cake and drinks sublime. I really could have stayed there forever! I could happily have died there in fact! Peaceful, quiet, just heaven! Now the chairs could do with an upgrade as they were those cheap green plastic stackable jobs but they were....OK. It definitely wasn't cheap, but that's good as it keeps out the riff raff (joke). But you get what you pay for - a thoroughly pleasant experience. And the bonus, the very attractive waitress had a walk that moved all the right parts in beautiful symmetry. Aaah! I wish I were 30 years younger. Such a delight....the tea rooms I mean of course! We shall most definitely visit again. It all made life worth living!

Pretty, quaint tea room set in the heart of Penshurst. Short walk from Penshurst Place. Plenty of parking in street. We were welcomed by a friendly waitress. We sat in the garden - very relaxing. Food was delicious - beautifully cooked plain scones and fabulous blackcurrant jam. Will definitely return again.

Drove past this cute tea room and decided to stop, parking was available just outside. The staff was nice and i have been told the cake was amazing.I couldn't have anything to eat as they didn't have any gluten free option available.A little bit disappointed, the sandwiches looked very good.

I stopped here on a Sunday afternoon in April and by chance they were just opening (at about 2.30pm) this is just around the corner from Penshurst Place ( within walking distance). We were sat just inside the door, the staff were all very friendly.I had a pot of earl grey tea with a huge slice of carrot cake, which were delicious! The sandwiches and scones looked amazing also, I will have to try those out next time! Overall a lovely little tea room with lovely tea and cakes and helpful staff!

I have visited here twice and although the scones are lovely and moist I don't understand why they don't make fruit scones as well as plain scones. Also they don't - serve clotted cream with the scones- they serve whipped cream and as someone who loves to try different afternoon tea this is the first tea room that i have encountered whipped cream and i was quite surprised and disappointed. On the plus side the cakes looked lovely and fresh and the slices they serve are huge.

After having a tough week due to a knee ligament operation my friend took me here for a nice treat. Well what a treat, great choice of sandwiches, beautiful scones with sooooo much cream and a slice of cake with endless tea! Nothing was too much trouble for the lovely friendly staff! I was fit to burst at the end but well worth it :)

What could be better - a walk around Penshurst followed by tea and cake at the Fir Tree. If it's summer, enjoy the garden. If it's chilly, sit by the fire! Apple and raspberry cake is my favourite!

This is a nice traditional tea room in a lovely village. A pretty garden outback and two cosy rooms inside. The menu is fairly limited - sandwiches, cakes and scones but they are home-made, good quality and reasonably priced. The tea is loose leaf which is a rare thing these days - a very good tea selection, served in china cups and a jug of hot water without even asking. The order arrived promptly. My only gripe is that this place is nearly always closed - completely closed between end of October and April each year. When it is open it is only from 2.30pm 5 days a week. Clearly it is run as a hobby and not a serious business which is a shame as I'm sure plenty of locals and walkers would love to visit the place all year round. Its a shame someone doesn't take it over and run it a serious going concern - it has great potential and would be an asset to the area if open all year round and earlier in the day.

Enchanting garden typical of a genuinevild fashioned traditional tea house. Home made scones jams, al fresco tea time in beatifully maintained gardens, secluded from passing traffic by a hedge in a lovely village typical of what Kent has best to offer. Friendly staff, good service, clean surroundings. Only downside was the tea house doesn't open until 2.30 pm in the afternoon! Still,a lovely gem next to Bidborough ridge, with its beautiful viewpoint. What's not to like?

The Fir Tree was recommended to me, so I went on the wet, Bank Holiday Monday, having called ahead to make sure it was open. At first, we couldn't figure out which door to use. The owner saw us and said we should come in - nobody knew which door to use she said, "but I can't understand why it causes so much confusion!" Perhaps a friendly, helpful sign might assist? The cake was lovely and fresh and the tea was good - no complaints about the food, but goodness, the staff looked thoroughly miserable. Such long faces! The young lady who showed us to the table, handed one menu to us to share, wiped the table and laid out the tea cups managed to do all of this in the most surly manner without speaking to us at all. We both felt like our being there was a major inconvenience. The room was gloomy and chilly, and the approach of the staff did nothing to improve it. Food fine, but I won't be going back.

A beautiful setting for the tearoom with a large garden too! We were served promptly despite it being busy. The waitress was very nice and friendly. The items on the menu were very pricey so we opted to share an afternoon tea and order an extra coffee. This was plenty for two.The scones were tasty( although a little small) and the jam and cream delicious.Egg Mayo and sandwiches were also scrummy with fresh wholemeal bread. We could barely squeeze in the apple and BlackBerry sponge which was definitely the most delicious. We would definitely make a return visit...as we want to try the other cakes too!

I went through the reviews and decided it has to be a MUST go place. However when we got there one of the staff not sure if owner looked at us as if we were going to rob the place. The waitress was rude and as if did not want to serve us. Scones hard, cakes tasted old. Useless pot of hot water with no lid ...no sense in using it. Paid over £30 for just 2 ... you can spend extra £20 and have a lovely time at Laduree in Harrods.

We had afternoon tea in the pretty gardens here yesterday because the tea rooms were completely full, as was most of the garden! The tea was freshly brewed in a pot, a good range of choices were available, and I chose the earl grey which had a good flavour. The cake was delicious and a reasonable size, so it was a very pleasant afternoon tea. The service was friendly and efficient considering how busy they were, which suggests that it is a very popular place. The tea rooms looked very pretty and quaint with nicely tended gardens.

My wife and I visited on 30th July 2015 and ordered the full tea for two consisting of sandwiches, scones with jam and cream and a slice of homemade cake with a choice of tea or coffee.Unfortunately we were totally underwhelmed save for the two slices of sponge cake which were fine.Sandwiches were made with poor quality bread with absolutely no thought toward presentation being simply plonked on the plate without even a single piece of lettuce or parsley to liven things up.Scones were served with a blackcurrant jam that was very sharp, lacking any sweetness and coupled with a very insipid whipped creamSponge cake was pleasant.Loose leaf tea was served with an accompanying strainer which was smeared with jam. The extra hot water is provided in an open topped ceramic jug allowing the heat to escape so that by the time one refills the teapot it is tepid, thus ensuring that you are drinking cold tea with your final course. All in all it was an amateurish experience and at a cost of £12.70 per head, it is one that we shall not repeat and as a final comment I would simply state that a far superior afternoon tea that can be had for £17.50 per head overlooking Trafalgar Square in the dining room of a major art gallery.

There is nothing better than afternoon tea in a beautiful garden. The cakes are amazing and the slices large!! £12.50 per person for tea, sandwiches, scones and cakes is a bargain in my opinion. Fir Tree House is a favourite spot for the missus and I and we always look forward to going back.

I have driven past this unassuming little tearoom many times and visited it on recommendation. I am kicking myself for not going sooner! It was simply gorgeous. When I spoke to the proprietor on the phone she was friendly and helpful and very welcoming and all of this was repeated upon arrival. We decided to sit inside although it was a beautiful day and the garden was very pretty, and ordered two afternoon teas. The choice of sandwich fillings was good, as was the range of teas available. The waitresses were very polite. The afternoon tea comprised of 4 finger sandwiches, of various fillings of choice, two home baked, warm scones with clotted cream and jam, and a large piece of cake. I chose the lemon and my husband chose the chocolate. I have to confess I could not eat the cake, I was so full, so I wrapped it in a napkin and ate it later! Hubby polished all of his off and was replete. All for £12.50 each. A bargain, it was delicious and we will definitely be going back again.

What a delightful little tearoom, in the heart of beautiful Penshurst countryside. Run by Catherine, who bakes the most lusciously light cakes, and her team of lovely polite young ladies who put together your tea and serve. The garden is particularly quaint, as is the inside, with its olde wolde charm, and open fires on chilly days. We walk there on a regular basis and always get a warm, friendly welcome.

After a great walk around Penshurst grounds, we decided to enjoy the Fir Tree house's garden, scones, and tea. Just brilliant. Nice Owners, staff and guests. Just what you need on a Sunday afternoon to forget that Monday is around the corner. Will certainly go there again (be careful though as you walk in the lovely village, as cars drive fast..).

I went here as part of a birthday treat and it was simply magical with its lovely flowers and the sun shining on the gardens. We were served promptly by a lovely girl with perfect manners and the cakes were absolutely beautiful and all in all nice prices. It is somewhere that I could live in the garden. I have told all my friends and family and will be coming here again.....easy to park.....well located and like for me a step back in time with the good food and good manners. Well done.

It is always a real treat to go to the Fir Tree. My husband and I went for a late lunch/early tea this afternoon. We got there at 2.40 and it was almost full, we were lucky to find a table. ( It opens at 2.30) It is always busy because it is such a great place. We were served within 10 minutes. Their egg mayonnaise sandwiches are my favourites. Fantastic light scones with homemade jam and cream, followed by a delicious coffee cake. There were plenty of other cakes to choose from. It was too cold to sit in their beautiful garden today. I am looking forward to another visit in the summer.

I visited the Fir Tree House Tearoom after visiting Penshurst Place and can only say good things about it.Good looking house that on the day we visited had the roaring flames of the fireplace heating and warming us up, which made the place feel very welcoming and inviting. The scones and tea were amazing and of great quality and the service very friendly. All in all, a great place to sit in, have a great afternoon tea and relax before heading home. I invited 14 family members to celebrate my 30th birthday at the fir tree tea rooms on saturday, We had a lovely afternoon in front of the fire, the food was fantastic, we all had the traditional afternoon tea, the sandwhiches, scones and cakes were delicious, the staff were very friendly and helpful, we left 14 very happy customers (which is very suprising as some are very fussy eaters) i would definitely recommend the tea rooms it has a lovely relaxing atmosphere.

We, as a family used to LOVE visiting this tea room, even bringing various relatives out for a special treat. That was until we called in one day on our way back from the Coast. Firstly, we had a half hour wait outside (didn't mind too much). Had our usual cream tea which was ok. My daughter had a lemonade which was actually from Sainsb*rys and the jam wasn't home made but Robertson's. Sorry, but won't be visiting again.Actually visited in 2013, but TA wouldn't let me put that.

We recently made a return visit to Fir Tree House after a gap of several years. We were delighted to find that their high standard had not slipped in the slightest. Friendly service and a warm and cosy atmosphere with log fires made it an oasis of comfort after a winter's day walk. Pretty china and real leaf tea combined with light-as-a-feather scones, delicious home-made cake, and generously filled sandwiches created the best Afternoon Tea we've had anywhere in Kent or Sussex. We won't leave it so long until our next visit!

Superb afternoon tea with multiple choices to eat.We chose the most expensive at £12.70 a head which represented excellent value for money consisting of as much tea as you could drink coupled with a sandwich each,2 scones each & cake to follow. The sandwiches & cake were moist & inviting. The surroundings too were in keeping with the tudor building & the old-fashioned feel of the place. They have been trading for over 50 years & the inside was full to capacity on the day. They only open at w/ends in the winter so at the height of summer it could be tricky to get in.This was our first visit & will not be our last.

I absolutely adore this place. The food is delicious. My favourite is the pate salad sandwiches, followed by the homemade cake of the day. The garden is a gem, a beautiful country garden where the owners grow their own produce. You could spend hours in this garden with the kids and dog in tow. The cakes are all homemade and taste wonderful and the tearoom employs local teenagers which is a real asset to how big a part of the community they are. We live ten minutes away but love coming here for tea and cakes in the summer.

Lovely spot to stop on a walk for coffee or lunch or drive there too. It had good outdoor and indoor seating and you’re served from a shipping container on a farm. The food is good and some unusual choices. The service is slow as everything is freshly made so don’t go there when you’re in a hurry!

Went on Friday and was very poor ( I said before I wouldn’t go again & wish I hadn’t ). No poached eggs as they were “too busy” & can you believe they’d run out of bread by 2 o’clock? How about you send someone to Waitrose to restock ? Definitely my last visit. Will go to Gail’s or one of the other places . This is a cafe without a toilet that charges top notch prices and doesn’t offer the food or service to match .
