In a lovely setting with some shade on a hot day. The gliders add interest and the Meze plate was very good. Limited choice on the menu but this was our second visit and we will definately be back if we are in the area.

Quite simply the best food I’ve eaten at a restaurant. A highly recommended hidden gem. Caper has moved since the photos above were taken. The new location is smaller and the ambience different, but the quality is not diminished. Excellent food. Worth every penny.

This is a hidden gem on the site of the Bristol and Gloucester Gliding Club. It's an unlikely venue for an informal dining room with an open kitchen that produces high-quality lunches from Friday to Sunday. The menu consists of three or four mains. I had the miso roasted aubergine with deep fried oyster mushrooms, which came in a thali with rice and an excellent array of pickles, slaws, and salad. The gliders taking off and landing were strangely soothing, too.

The place to go if you want amazing, incredibly thoughtful and flavourful food, beautifully presented! The new venue at the gliding club is cosy and still close the spectacular views and walks but doesn't really do the quality of food justice, but this does add to the feeling of it being a hidden gem. We had the mezze and it really was one of the best meals I’ve ever had - the best of vegetarian food.

In December I celebrated my 70th birthday with a friends and family late lunch at Caper, at the gliding club Nympsfield, twenty four people in all. The staff were friendly and helpful, the food was as delicious as I'd hoped, and vocally appreciated by my guests. A bacon sandwich was supplied to suit the request of one guest and a children's menu was available for the four infants. We were warned in advance that service might be slow for such a large group due to the limited serving space in the kitchen, so we had a few shared starters on hand to avoid tummy rumbles. ( We had preordered main course meals and submitted them two days before our booked event) The atmosphere was relaxed, there was plenty of opportunity to move between our three tables to chat with each other and compare dishes. The children were able to run off some energy in the walled seating area outside with family supervision. We were allocated 90 minutes but were able to stay on until the group naturally dispersed. Everyone left glowing, it was a perfect birthday meal.

Caper (previously Thistledown) is just the most amazing kitchen now housed at Bristol & Gloucester Gliding Club. The team serve up the most fabulous, colourful, fresh and creative plates of foods, always so incredibly delicious with such great variety and flavour. Despite the small menu it’s still difficult to choose between the dishes on offer. We had the aubergine mezze plate and the shawarma chicken skewers - all incredible. We just about had room to share the most deliciously moist orange, almond and chocolate cake which was divine. Also, we brought home a date and oat slice to enjoy over coffee the next day, this was again completely delicious. The wines by the glass are fabulous and the coffee excellent. Lovely friendly staff. Need we say more. It’s a very popular place and deservedly so, recommend booking for lunch to sit inside although walk ins may be accommodated on the outside tables. Cannot wait to return for another fantastic lunch.

We've been lucky enough to eat at some very good restaurants over the years - the meal we had at Caper was one of the best we've ever had. The veggie skewer (oyster mushrooms, courgettes, red onions with satay sauce plus amazing sweetcorn fritters with sweet chilli mayo and a green bean, coconut, cucumber salad with spicy sauce. It was like 3 meals in one with amazing flavours and textures, quite superb. and the service was excellent too - they were very busy (no surprise) but the staff were cheery and even brought some free pistachios and apologised for the wait. All very refreshing !

We love this kitchen. The food is fabulous - fresh, innovative and tasty as it gets. The small menu means everuthing is perfect. The team make magic wherever they are, and whilst Thistledown is much missed the new location has its own beauty. Go here after a walk around Coaley Peak for delicious meat and vegan plates of perfection, and to watch the gliders take off and land. Its wonderful.

Vegan option looked lovely but tasted bland and was too greasy for my taste. Deep fried mushrooms were cut so thin that all I could taste was batter. There was a lack of protein so the meal didn't feel balanced or satisfying . Atmosphere and service was very good. My friends enjoyed their non vegan meals and I enjoyed the coffee

Thistledown is pretty unique. The campers mix with 'day' eaters at this hill top cafe. The food is different and delicious. On a cold day, sit indoors with your dog and on a sunny day sit outside and enjoy the view. To eat you really do have to book. Sadly closed just now but opening again soon with a new chef - but the old one will take some beating!

Dropped by on a Saturday morning for takeaway croissants, bread and a coffee. Great baked goods (courtesy of Salt Bakehouse). Frustratingly slow wait (c.15 mins). Staff pleasant enough but there doesn’t seem to be any system in place or sense of urgency. I saw a couple leave a table without ordering, saying they couldn’t wait any longer. Nice ambience and great location - just needs one or two more staff and a bit of efficiency and focus on getting customers served.

Well, we drove out from Stroud, stood by the ‘wait here to be seated’ sign being ignored, then eventually went to sit at a wonky, not terrible clean picnic bench to be ignored again, then gave up and left. It's obviously all about really good food. It's also possible if you have really main stream taste you might not get it. I had the burger, based on a photo someone shared on Facebook. What I mean is, if you expect a regular white bun, ketchup and a lettuce leaf it's leagues above that sort of thing. Everything on the plate, each little side and garnish has had thought put into it. Everything, fresh crisp and lovingly prepared. We didn't book but they found a space for us at lunch time on a Sunday and took very good care of us. All the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. I don't see how a place like this can fail. Especially recommended for those with an ever so slightly more adventurous palate.

Great place, pizza delicious and spectacular setting. However it was a bit mean that they have a surcharge if you bring a birthday cake. Thought it was a bit much for a campsite restaurant with tons of kids around to actually charge for a plate to put a cake on! With respect it's a lovely place but not exactly Claridges! Also we got there a little late one day and they refused to take a lunch order for 2 extra people - we were already seated and our party was a group of 11 campers and they couldn't put just 2 sandwiches through?! I know they are a busy establishment with high demand but this was massively unaccommodating especially as I'm type 1 diabetic and it's not ideal to skip meals. Apart from that great food and atmosphere and waiters and waitresses lovely and efficient too.

Previously reviewed under 'Thistledown Farm' for Feb 2018 visit - previous comments still stand - good choice of veggie food though menu seemed to be the same as previous visit except for the soup and the cakes - would have been nice to see something different on offer. Elderly mother found it difficult to find something to suit her on the menu as she really prefers something more traditional. She ended up choosing the Tikka paneer (which I had last time) but found it too dry with no sauce etc - the staff did happily provide a little dish of a yoghurty / oil / herb mix which helped. Coffee was good apparently! One child ate plenty - hummus and flatbread, veg and the patatas al pobre - but the other wasn't keen. Very busy, would definitely recommend booking although there did seem to be people arriving later on who hadn't booked. Drive carefully down the drive, the potholes are dreadful, even worse since our previous visit.

I had lunch here last week with two young children. One of them is a very fussy eater so is always a bit challenging to take anywhere! I ordered some pancakes with maple syrup for the children and the Lamb Koftas for me which I ended up sharing with the unfussy child. We then all shared some carrot cake for pudding. The food was fantastic, very fresh and full of flavour. Super surroundings with great views over the hills and a lovely family friendly feel. The children were fascinated by the wood fired oven and loved walking around the site and climbing on the vintage tractor. I can't wait to try the Pizza when they are available. Dog friendly although I left mine in the car as he had been running about on Coaley Peak for ages. Great to find somewhere to take children where they are welcome and not restricted to burgers and fish fingers!
