Fern in Croydon

Stunned into silence by the complete lack of compassion and empathy displayed by your staff. I made the point that the Guinness was not well-kept, ie it smelt like vinegar, pipes needed cleaning etc and requested a replacement. Feedback was that I'd already drunk half of it, so not possible; my friend had bought me the drink so I felt obliged to drink it, until I said I couldn'tdrink any more due to its taste. So I was told I had to pay for a replacement drink as I'd drank too much of the one already purchased. No sympathy, no compassion, no customer service. Hard to believe that a bar's reputation is willing to be sacrificed for half a pint..?! I questioned this with the staff, but they insisted that stubbornness rules.

Deliciously different, as a vegetarian this menu excited me and I wasn't disappointed. Even my meat-eater husband was inspired to go plant based, so inviting was the menu. Can't wait to go back.

We were visiting from America and looking for a nearby spot for a Sunday roast. This one was beyond amazing. They had a delicious vegan roast option for myself and various other offerings. They have a bourbon drink special and all were spectacular. The staff was excellent, the food amazing. Highly recommend! Wish we had time to come back for their regular menu.

We booked breakfast for a Saturday morning and were looking forward to it. We were initially seated right by the kitchen door and within eye-shot of the toilets - which wasn’t ideal - and I asked to move. The person who’d been on reception said he couldn’t move us because the other tables had been booked. He said we could sit ‘elsewhere’, but we’d not get table service. I asked about an empty table near the doorway - he admitted it was free and we sat there. Now, if his attitude wasn’t so offish, stony faced and salty, I’d have given him the benefit of the doubt and thought perhaps he’d forgotten about that free table, however, I know in my heart that he hadn’t and also know he didn’t care if we stayed or left. This was further compounded when one of the ‘unavailable’ tables was given to a couple, like us, and the other ‘unavailable’ table wasn’t booked until a full one and a half hours after ours. We know this because we witnessed these facts for ourselves. He could have been accommodating, there were options, but he instead chose to be …. himself perhaps? Maybe he thought we were poor, not worthy of effort or not the clientele he wants in there? Whatever it was, he made us feel like crap. Henry, the waiter, was lovely and the food was good too, hence a star for each attribute.

Food,ambience, service, decor, tunes, cocktails everything on point - awesome - If I could give 10 stars I would - my friend found this gem and we had pre drinks at Tickle and on to Fern which is absolutely stunning, tunes upbeat, service from Connor and Jake just fabulous, they know their menu inside out and I trusted their recommendations as they described their favourite dishes with such passion! Ambience, decor, layout, attention to detail ALL ON POINT ! And the food - omg - we had 6 dishes which were all big ! Bacalhau à Brás” - Flaked salted cod is A MUST, steak bavette, HISPI CABBAGE beautiful, sweet potato with spinach yum, prawns in red pesto so fresh and chunky, pied de padrons a solid fav, I had a passion fruit cocktail which was dare I say it even nicer than a pornstar martini - fresh/lighter with great base flavours, then we couldn’t resist the white chocolate dome with the butterscotch sauce and crumb - that’s one I did actually remember to take a pic of before the sauce landed - the best evening - we are 100% coming back to rinse and repeat that experience ! Great food, brilliant service. Highly recommend! Will definitely be back for brunch again. Definitely a welcome addition to East Croydon area. Try the Turkish Eggs!

Obsessed with this spot! It’s my favourite local restaurant, a delicious small plates concept with a changing seasonal menu which has so many fab options. I’ve been here several times, for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and with different groups, and every time staff were so attentive and friendly, offering us lots of great options. The cocktail menu and wine list are excellent and I’ve tried so many lovely unusual things here. Hugely recommend.

The atmosphere and decor are good. However I was disappointed by the food - the scallops and prawns were tasty but the lasagne was the blandest I've ever tasted and the cabbage was poor. The meal was overpriced and I've had far better quality at lower prices elsewhere. Sadly I will not be returning.

Lovely place to meet up with friends for food and drinks. Nice service, we have very fantastic cocktails by Mary. Will be back again.

I was excited to try Fern after I’ve heard good things about it. Unfortunately the service was very slow, the food came one dish at a time in intervals, ruining the food sharing experience and we had to remind the waitress 2x that our drinks hadn’t arrived. They also don’t cater for children and the only thing remotely child friendly (meatballs) came last (after nearly 2 hours) and my son didn’t like them. We ended up going to Mc Donald’s across the road to feed him. The food itself was luke warm and overpriced for what it was and the staff a bit complacent. They blamed Mother’s Day and although it was busy there were empty tables and they did not appear overly rushed off their feet. More likely a case of poor management and not very friendly. Shame really, as the interior is lovely and so much potential…. Maybe better for drinks at night but would not go back for food unfortunately.

My party of six visited for our friends late lunch birthday get together. We were trying to enjoy the food and company and our waitress was nice. Unfortunately the managers one male and one female, harassed us constantly about the two hour limit on the table. I counted that we were reminded at least 7 times from 45 minutes in. It really became a rush job and spoiled our enjoyment. To top it all off the food is not cheap ( our bill was £400 including the 12.5% service charge they gave themselves). Not for me. Will never return. Incidentally the table we gave up after the 2 hours, remained empty when we left 40 minutes after vacating. Patronising, annoying behaviour and definitely not worth the money.

Have had a great dinner here so decided to try brunch with a friend. Good atmosphere and nice different brunch dishes on the menu. I had the chorizo hash browns with eggs and aioli! Really tasty, good portion and value - slightly more aioli and it would have been 10/10! Good mimosas, good service. One comment, I wanted to add avocado but £5 for what looks like a quarter of an avocado smashed is overpriced! Like this place a lot.

Myself and my partner visited Fern on a Sunday Afternoon and was blown away. We had seen the restaurant on our travels and knew we would have to try it out sometime, and it didn’t disappoint! We grabbed a drink at the bar whilst waiting for our table to be prepared and ordered a cocktail each. The cocktails were pricey but no different to any other restaurant with a modernised fine dining experience. We were seated by the waitress who asked us if we had visited previously, before she explained the menu to us. The food is a more contemporary sharing experience as opposed to having separate starters, mains and sides. They recommend 2-3 dishes per person. After careful consideration (everything sounded pretty good!), we ordered the focaccia, tiger prawns, cauliflower bites, green lasagne, and the harissa chicken. I have to say, every single dish was absolutely fantastic! Each dish boasted its own characteristics and flavour, and provided great levels to the meal as a whole. The focaccia was served warm with caramelised red onion butter - you can’t beat a fresh, warm bit of bread! The tiger prawns were so succulent and really quite thick, and boasted some tasty flavours with the topping of crunchy peanuts, and a creamy coconut style sauce. The Cauliflower bites were incredible, and lightly coated in a bang bang sauce. The slight heat of the sauce, along with the panko coating gives the cauliflower that great crunch which makes this work wonderfully. It makes a change for these not to be drenched in a sauce so the dish is not too spicy or overpowering. One of our fave’s. The Green Lasagne - what can I say. The look of the dish was brilliant, and the taste absolutely matched it. The layers you could see were incredible, and the flavours again were absolutely out of this world. A slightly crunchy top with a béchamel sauce and hint of pesto to die for, outstanding. We would absolutely recommend trying this - 10/10 dish! And finally the harissa chicken, served on a bed of tzatziki with pomegranate was cooked to perfection. With a crispy top, and succulent throughout, this packed the perfect punch to ensure our selection of dishes had a bit of everything! Overall, the experience was fantastic. Although it is a little bit on the pricey side, the quality of the dishes shines through. This is a must try experience - Highly recommend!

The food is over rated and so expensive for Croydon I think they need have a serious think about their food . It’s ridiculously over priced tasteless not worth the money . There is nothing in the website that says it’s like tapas style until you sit down and they tell you order 4-6 dishes . Food was tasteless, bland , over rated and over prices I wouldn’t eat here again if I was paid to. Avoid at all costs because it will cost the earth for boring bland tasteless food . When I was asked how the meal was I said it was terrible for the price no taste the short rib was more fat than meat. The manager said someone asked how the food was and we said it was nice but we hadn’t even had all the food or even tried it all they offered was to take off the service charge hmmmmm which is discretionary anyway so not really any acknowledgment of the fact that we thought its was not worth the price or worth even ordering. AVOID AT ALL COSTS GO TO NANDOS YOUR GUARANTEED FLAVOUR THERE AT LEAST

Ellegant place with really good food and drinks and nice service. Tried scallops and padron peppers, loved both. Rum punch was delicious, so was negroni.

We went for drinks and snacks on our way back to the station. The venue was really full (impressive for January after Christmas), we were met at the door by a friendly member of staff who showed us to our table. The service was friendly & attentive and the ambiance was amazing. We ordered scallops and a side of Padron Peppers both of which were delicious and arrived in good time. We sampled the cocktails (both of which were fantastic and the rum punch is the best I’ve tried outside of the Caribbean.

My drink was spiked in here and the owner ‘didn’t receive’ the police’s request to look at the tapes despite them emailing a few times. Time lapsed and the ‘tapes are no longer available’ I will never go here again, don’t recommend and don’t trust them. Horrible first time experience.

I met my date at Fern and we were to decide whether to eat there. He had a drink at the bar while he was waiting as I was running late. When we asked for a table we were refused one as we hadn't decided whether to eat or just drink .The way the waiter spoke to us it was easy to decide not to stay and we left. If the waiter is like that with most people not many people would be returning. We could have easily decided to stay and eat but with the price of the drinks being overpriced for Croydon area , the only way we would have stayed would have been to have been given excellent service at first contact. That wasn't the case so we moved on, and I will never be back.

We picked Fern for a business lunch due to its close proximity to the train station (it's literally opposite the main entrance) and attractive menu. It was comfortable, nice surroundings and attentive service. Our food was delicious. Would highly recommend based on our experience.
