Fat Boys Fish, Chips & Burgers in The Vale of Glamorgan

Can be nice.. can be disappointing. Have decided to stop eating here because it's too hit and miss. Owner seems to rant in the Google comments that it's all "fresh" and "piping hot", but it seems I'm not the only one. So I guess it won't improve if the owner is so in denial and stubborn about that. Quality also seems to be guaranteed to be poor on a Sunday, when the chips on a few Sundays have seemed like they're either over done, or they're just old ones. Price is expensive despite (again) the owner's protests in the comments. Plenty of chip shops in the area selling bags of chips for much less than the £3.50 mark. Never had a problem with the customer service, although weird to hear the owner in the comments saying how everyone was rude, yet they seem to be the only one coming across as being rude and sarcastic to people. Makes this place even less appealing to hear an owner like that. Doesn't make me want to support their establishment. Edit: It's been a few months and thought I'd come back and comment, since it's a Saturday night and the chips are pants. All over done or old, not sure which. Took another star off. Also, nice of the owner to prove me right about their attitude with their reply below (oh they've deleted it now🤦🏻😂🐔) I wasn't even complaining about the quality of the potato... It's the inconsistency with the standard of preparation that's the problem. Shame they don't just take feedback on board. Guess I will have to 'go somewhere else'. Funny thing is, they think they've won by telling me to go elsewhere. Oh and thanks for letting me know about foodhub, I'll be sure to head over there now and give you 1 star, since you "only take those ones seriously"😘

Awful! Gravy was like water, sausage in batter was white, batter soggy and well uncooked. Spent £16 on an order that was not worth a penny. Sent photos and videos of the poor quality of food, the messages have been marked as seen but they haven't even replied or refunded. I have always recommended this place, but it has really gone downhill.

Used to order here all the time food especially fish was great so was prices. Ordered today 22.7.24 the fish doesn't look like fish, looks more like a fish cake! The large bag of chips was tiny considering they were £3.70. the order was over £30 and barely enough food for 2 people!! Will never order hear again. Paid for large sauce X2 but was given small but still changed for large just to add insult to injury. Never again!!!

I would recommend Fat Boys to anyone also the food is always absolute the staff are always friendly towards their customers and hygiene is always of a high standard

Ordered 1 large fish box 2 double cheeseburger (1 plain no source) 1 large chips once curry sauce…. Fish box got delivered one chips one gravy one sausage and batter and a curly fries…complained and had to send what we didn’t order back….someone has now probably eaten a return will never order from here again

Food portions were a good size but unfortunately after spending 2x £12 on a large and 2x burger meals with 2 bags of chips, Myself and my Partner spent the weekend back and forth to the toilet !!! Food was tasteless even with a burger with a mix of chicken and burgers, onion rings and bacon it all tasted bland and very fatty. This was a family treat, the pictures on the website looked amazing but most of the food was falling to pieces Extremely disappointed Gave 2 stars just for the quantity And Delivery person was very friendly Was left extremely disappointed and will never use again

Well what can I say. Had a leaflet through my door so thought I’ll give them a go tonight. Ordered a fish meal and McFlurry. The meal was supposed to come with mushy peas and tartare which were not given on delivery. The McFlurry was small than a pot of sauce. Food was cold considering it’s probably the closest takeaway to me. For the price I won’t be shopping here again and don’t recommend. Also the leaflet price is way cheaper than the price online massively disappointed

Always loved fat boys and in the past recommended it to others Never again! Portion of chips in chip butty was pathetic and the small chips was also a very small portion Food was bearly warm So disappointed will be going else where from now on

Terrible food, expensive price and grumpy disinterested service (particularly the lady who I assumed is the owner??). Can't imagine it being there very long, just no care for quality or service.

Ordered from here waited for nearly 3 hours for delivery when the food did turn up it was barely look warm spoke to them and was told "but we are really busy", as a customer that's not my problem waiting for 60-90 mins for a delivery I can accept but not 3 hours.

The last time I will order from here! The first time their card machine didn't work so it was cash only and therefore I was unable to order. This time I ordered through Uber, it did not come within the delivery time . I then got a call to say they are running 30 minutes late. I therefore cancelled the order .

The fish was very much like Basa chewy and grey. Cod is Snow White and very palatable. Will not be going there again.

Best fish and chips in the Vale, hands down. Big portions, friendly owner, staff are great and food is delicious.

Always had really nice food from here. But today had massively over cooked dry amd grey colour chips. Everything else OK but my kids couldn't eat it. Not normally like this but they were unedible.

Ordered large chips curry sauce chicken burger x2. And 2 jumbo sausages. The portion of chips was like a little kiddies cone of chips wrapped up so tight they must of thought they were ringing out a wet towel an they were squashed like mashed potato. Curry sauce lumpy an cold. Sausage tasted like it had been stuck up someone’s dirt box for a week. An the chicken burger was like a squished down nugget from Maccy ds. 22.50 for that. Food is awful staff haven’t a clue how to wrap chips or give appropriate portions. And the prices are just ripping people off. Never will I order from there again. An I’ve been going there for a few years new owners haven’t got a clue. Looks like they just want to rip people off with portions getting smaller an smaller prices going up an up. Fat boys you stink.

My first time going to Fat Boys yesterday and to be perfectly honest I was quite disappointed with the result, 1st thing is the chips looked and tasted like they had been standing for quite some time, we had a large fish which was the size of small one with very soggy batter, I will say the Chinese curry sauce was ok but the big thing is the prices you charge like £7.50 for a peice of fish which wasn't anywhere near a large one and £3.50 for a bag of chips absolutely ridiculous, I know food prices have gone up but come on Fat Boys you really are taking the michael, and before you answer with a sarcastic answer like I should go to McDonald's and try their food my answer would be I will but I certainly won't come back to you any time soon so you keep going the way you are and keep losing customer's and just remember there are other chippies out there !!

Massively disappointed, looked the deal. Reminded me of a cheap chippy trying to be a posh one.. the fish was mediocre, the chips were like scrumps. The mushy peas were watery.

Lovely food, the fish was cooked fresh and was delicious. The homemade tartar sauce is to die for! Will definitely be ordering again. Haven’t had decent fish and chips for a while so glad I’ve found this place!

Just popped over to Barry to try Fat Boys Fish & Chips, have to say we were really impressed. Quality and quantity, big portions with good quality produce. Irish curry is banging, chips cooked perfectly, fish top notch and the Fat Boy XL Burger was a beast. Highly recommend, five stars from us ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We had: Fish bites Large chips Chicken burger Fat Boys XL Burger Irish Curry All for £21 All these people moaning about price, have you not seen what is going on in our country, do you not know how expensive it is to run a business in this day and age. Utility bills are up massively, rent increases, produce prices going through the roof. How about support local and stop moaning, if you want cheap quality food at cheap prices pop over to McDonalds.

Absolutely appalling service received tonight. We've ordered a few times previously with no issue. Even left a good review. Rang about an issue tonight, was hung up on after basically being called a liar. Such bad service. Would have taken seconds to resolve the issue.

Ordered food for 1st time Never again food was Awful and very over priced !!!! Chips looked as if they’d been in hot plate quite a while . Food was served by a young girl who really wasn’t sure what she was supposed to be doing , also assistant had several abrasions on her hands that should really have been covered up . When I advised the matter I was told that she had washed her hands. One I’d observed this matter I asked for a refund as I still hadn’t had my order I was flatly refused, once arriving home food smelt very greasy and didn’t look appetising a total waste of money.

I have had fish and chips for four weeks including this as they were quite nice expensive for a pensioner but a treat a week us ok I figured well tonight was no treat at all you could not put a fork through the chips they were so hard and the fish tasted like it had been cooked in old oil why do take outs keep going like this so hit and miss they could not do it if they were a restaurant no consistency at all right through most of Barry takeouts

Turned up an hour and a half later than expected. (Ordered at 6.40 food turned up gone 9) Half the order missing. Chips double cooked. We wont be ordering again from them

Been to fat boys twice when I go to Barry. Best fish and chip shop by far. I live in Herne Bay kent but love fat boys food. Highly recommend

I have been getting my take aways from Fat Boys for a long time now and had an amazing dinner as always. Ordered directly by phone and got my delivery really quick and still HOT. The staff are friendly as always. The chicken curry on my chips was something new I tried. It was very authentic and would definitely recommend. The fish is always fresh and the chips are the best in Barry. Cannot wait for my next order!

I ordered at 8.25pm on a Sunday evening. Around 9.30pm I started chasing my order and was told by a lady that my order had just left. 10.10pm I called again to be told by a man that my order left 10 minutes ago. Both were lying and both didn’t have the decency to admit that they had clearly not done my order. I would have appreciated the honesty and would have gone elsewhere but instead waited a few hours for an order that was never going to arrive. There was no apology or empathy just lies, poor customer service. I will never order from them again and will definitely advise others to stay well clear. If anybody was to check opening hours for the establishment it clearly states they close at 9.30pm so why I was being told fibs at 10.10pm is beyond me. Were they trying to make out that they were operating outside of opening hours? How you can continue to operate in such a poor manor bewilders me, customer service means nothing to the staff. Since this inadequate service I have taken the liberty of reading reviews for Fat Boys Barry and have found quite a few customers were treated the same as myself. What I also found was a lot of positive reviews from the same person in a small space of time, are these genuine reviews or are they there to push non positive reviews further down the line? Overall an appalling service, given recent circumstances with covid, you’d think small takeaway outlets would be making more of an effort to grow their customer base and thrive. Rubbish ordered for the second time first time had a fish finger instead of a piece of fish now second time hour and half still waiting and phoned the shop don't want it now because they will probably spit in it because I phoned up and asked where my order was and the driver had a fiver tip should have paid me a fiver

Disgusting chicken curry and chips? Literally the £1 chicken you buy chilled in blister packs with some rank sauce they have nuked! Il keep posting about this cos as far as I’m concerned they ripped me off!!!!

Boyfriend is vegetarian so he ordered a veggie burger and chips then I realized the chips were cooked in lard which he cannot have and they didn't mention it on the phone . It left a thick layer of lard in my mouth and my boyfriend was sick. Lard as you know is made out of animal fat .the chips were not just cooked in lard they were caked right through . I never leave bad reviews ever but I am concerned vegetarians are having hidden animal fat . I am not impressed so just a warning to vegitarians not to order from there as lard is not vegetarian

Great food, reasonably priced, good service

I am in utter shock at this place !! First time ordering and my food had a hair in and my Coke was months out of date. I sent the full order back uneaten of course and they said I would have a refund within 5-7 days. I have now called to chase what is happening as I have not received an email as I requested and they advised no one has blonde hair who works there so I will not be getting a refund even though I returned my entire order. The hair was more dark than blonde !! I rang within 5 minutes of my order being delivered as I saw the hair almost straight away and they knew this. Never come across a takeaway business like this it’s appalling, I have taken this up with the food standards agency as I have all the pictures and evidence needed etc. I would NEVER use this takeaway again and I wish I could give them 0 stars as they do not deserve any.

Ordered via website for delivery...told 50 - 55 mins.. 90 mins later turned up after calling to ask. Buns wet where been in polystyrene trays...not the most appetising meals. Chips ok but not the best.. Will I order again...nope save your money and try elsewhere.

What the hell happened to this place? Order was taking way longer to arrive than time suggested. After ringing 15(!)times we've decided to drive to the place to find out not even looking busy staff who had no excuses for not picking up the phone. Being told that our order is next however it is not really good isn't it especially being starving and pregnant. What is the point of having a phone and limbs when you can't f... use them?! Saff didn't even knew how to do the refund on card so we took cash... Not the point here. If my business would have staff moving that slow and caring so little it wouldn't last for long. Big shame as we really liked this place. Massive massive disappointment!

Tried this for a change (usually go to the one behind Wilko) and was pleasantly surprised, 4 x fish & chips for the family. Fish was beautiful, chips were good - portion was more than we could finish. Highly recommended.

1st visit bought fish and chips in the shop, no complaints food was good. 2nd time ordered for delivery. Fish and chips again.... fish was Freshly cooked and plenty of it. Sadly same couldnt be said for the chips. They looked as if they'd been cooked and left for quite some time. . Having 2nd thoughts about a return visit. Seems quite disorganised...

Placed an order to collect and was told 10/15 minutes I turn up in 15 minutes and it was empty and they hadn’t even started my order yet he said be 5 minutes just waiting for the chicken. Then someone else come in and they gave them all the chips while I was still waiting so I had to then wait an extra 10 minutes on top of the ten I had just waited if not more 20 to 25 minutes on top of the 15 I was already told for and it was completely dead. What was the point of taking my order on the phone? Then get home and the chips are the smallest large chips have ever seen in my life!

Terrible service! Was told 45 minutes to 1hr for delivery and my food took 1hr and 30 minutes to arrive. The order was then wrong when it arrived and when I phoned they blamed me. Very slow & unprofessional.

Havent ordered from here in a while. We usually have to wait over the estimated time for delivery but tonight was a joke. Nearly 2 hours after placing the order, the food still wasn't here so I phoned the restaurant. The guy on the phone was apologetic and said the lady who runs the place was on the way with our food. There was no apology from her or explanation as to why it's taken nearly 2 hours. Then the food... the chicken burger was soggy, the cheese sauce had a huge lump of something in it, the chips were dry, the fishcake was a floppy piece of batter with god knows what inside it and the ice cream sundae was just a small pot of cheap melted ice cream with chocolate sauce underneath. The best part of our order was the slush puppy. Definitely won't be using these again which is such a shame as when they first opened, they were one of the best fish and chips places in Barry.

Second time in the last month that the food and service has been poor. There seems to be new staff - cold food and greasy fish. Had to wait 10 minutes over time because the burger wasn’t ready but the rest of the food was bagged and going cold. Not going back

Have ordered from here before with no issues. Tonight tho was awful. When ordered food, expected time was 25 mins, 1 hour 15 food finally arrives. Phoned twice with no apology, just told food on way. Mushy peas looked like they had been through the blender. Sad to say will not be ordering again, will go to chippy instead.

Order from here once a week as our treat, the food is really good but they often forget stuff and need to make sure they check the orders properly before sending them out for delivery. otherwise it would be 5 star

Without a doubt one of the best chippies in Barry and the surrounding area. Price wise, it's standard fare. The portion sizes you get are generous however. £8 sees you flush with crispy chips and a gigantic, double-stacked burger with toppings of your choice. It's easily as filling as two meals. The quality of the food is superb as well, with the only downside being a longer wait than your average fish & chip shop. Well worth waiting the extra few minutes though.

Great portions, fresh fish cooked while you wait, crispy batter, slightly 'scrumpy' chips but wont mark them down for that! Friendly service too

The best chips I've had in Barry for many years! The large cod was also cooked to perfection. The owner even cooked another piece because the first one didn't meet his standard! Will demonstrate return.

The fish was delicious. Fast service only a 45 minute wait. Chips were tasty and the fruity curry sauce was nice but a bit to spicy for me. I didn't need a large fish as the small cod was ample.

First time we've ordered from Fat Boys and it was lovely. The fish was beautiful, the best I've tasted from any chippy so we will definatly be ordering from here again. The meal was hot when it arrived and the delivery driver was polite. We all enjoyed our different meals from the menu and as my husband said "it went down a treat". so thank you.

Best fish and chips by far!! Curry sauce is amazing and portions are great. I do have to say though, even better than the food is the attitude and customer service provided by the owner and staff.. So polite, so helpful and can't do enough! Shame we can't eat Fish and Chips every night... Or maybe we can ;)

Ordered a delivery, after an hour, phoned and enquired, told just being wrapped, waited again, so drove there, absolutely appalling customer service, aggressive attitude, said it's gone, drove back, just been delivered, good food, apart from tartare sauce, more like garlic sauce. If they had done what was promised, and not been rude and aggressive, then it would have been a good rating, but I will NEVER go there again.
