Best coffee shop in town maybe even Lancashire! I just love love this coffee shop not only does it have the best coffee and cakes, if you want lunch it’s has plenty of wonderful options to choose from. Plenty of vegan and gluten free options also. It’s has the most wonderful nooks and crannies to sit in and its Victorian decor is beautiful. The staff are always friendly and service fast. I have yet to find a coffee shop I love more.

Visited here with my family as it is my favourite coffee shop with friendly staff. Unfortunately on this occasion let down by a member who literally threw our cups and saucers down in a rude manner. Obviously didn't want to be there. Luckily I knew this wasn't a regular member of staff, but not a good impression for anyone else who was visiting and didn't know differently.

This coffee house is located in a nice old building with a traditional interior. The seating areas are on several floors. We had a flat white and a cafetière which cost £4.80, and the quality was very good. The staff were very friendly.

Small cafe seating area behind shop with upstairs seating areas over 2 floors as well. Cafe was busy for a Monday morning. My husband enjoyed his cortado and I had an espresso which were very well priced. It was nice that the waitress brought glasses of water without having to ask. The guy in the shop was really helpful when we were deciding what coffee to buy to take away. Loads of teas and coffees to choose from. Didn't have any food so can't comment but prices looked reasonable.

Today I went again to one of my favourite cafes/restaurants. In the lovely market town of Clitheroe. Three floors of seating - homemade food and cakes. I had a lovey salad and then because I had been good treated myself to a jam and cream scone, simply scrumptious This place also roasts its own coffee and sells every kind of tea that you could wish for - my favourites being YUNNAN and DARJEELING. I would heartily recommend this place for its excellent value too..

We’re holidaying in the area and decided to go here because they are roasters, so I assumed they’d make great coffee. We both had Flat Whites and were disappointed. I’ve made them so I know what they should be. Milk lacked any texture / body. No ‘latte art’ but wouldn’t have been possible with the foam on these coffees, It wasn’t bad, but more like a strong latte! Need to raise your game. I didn’t come for food but great coffee!

Disappointing. Been here many times in the past, but wont be going again. Place empty, no atmosphere. Food expensive £8.25 for a few salad leaves with strawberries and goats cheese and burnt walnuts and slice of bread. Coffee came 20mins before food so thirsty after meal Staff not very attentive. Had to go find somebody for condiments and chips I ordered they had forgot about and came as my husband was finishing his meal. Bowland hall 5 mins walk away serving salmon and lemon mayo open sandwich for 6.25 with fries £2.00 and atmosphere buzzing

I heard Exchange Coffee had introduced vegan options on a Facebook group, but as nothing was labelled on their website, emailed them and had a lovely reply from Manager Neil. They offer a wrap, salad, the soup is usually vegan, specials can be veganised, when we visited this was an aubergine chilli, have vegan sausages & cheese and also vegan cakes and plant milks. We went for lunch on a Friday and ordered a falafel and houmous wrap for me and the salad version for my husband, followed by blueberry Bakewell slice and carrot cake, with Gunpowder Green tea and Formosa Oolong. The food was excellent, especially the cakes, my husband helped me out with the carrot cake as it was a huge portion. Overall really enjoyed it and will revisit, as vegan cakes in Clitheroe particularly are hard to find in any cafe in the town.

This Has been a local favourite. The coffee is great but I called in for a late lunch today I was very disappointed with the quality of food. I ordered a vegetable korma which had zero flavour and mushy overcooked vegetables. It was shockingly bad. I asked for something else and had a tuna sandwich which was fine. I think as a customer when you’ve had such a bad experience with something you’re really wanting A proper acknowledgement, apology and to turn around a negative experience into something positive. My experience here was that it was just glossed over.

I headed to one of the best independent coffee shops I know to enjoy a mid morning cup of my favourite French blend. Superb! And has been ever since I started buying my beans and take out coffee from EC back in 2008. Coffee: fantastic and well worth the visit.Food: regrettably I ordered scrambled eggs on toast with mushroom. YIKES! What arrived was eggs cooked to an inch of their life - just about edible not quite rubber - toast must be the Tesco value cheapest bread going - mushrooms from a can then fried in vegetable oil. Insult to injury, butter was in the foil wrappers (no!! pollution!) and the 'brown sauce' was that awful excuse of brown liquid. Please please, just buy in HP in the small jars. Due to covid, I now work from home and so decided to sit in and eat brunch while making a few calls & responding to emails. The rudest (around 5.2 mid 40s bit fat Clitheroe accent & light brownish hair) ordered me upstairs with a huff. The top floor was full and floors below empty. I explained that I was going to work & take a phone call & didn't want to disturb other guest. "please could I sit the floor below, it is empty?" The response was an eye roll followed by " well I'd need to clean down that table then". In my place, I stayed (LOL!)

However on this occasion I came here with my in laws and came away rather disappointed.. we all ordered our drinks- me a royal choc, my child a coke and my partner a small Cafetiere of blue mountain. My mother came too but hadn’t tried the coffee before so she just wanted a taste, when she asked for a second EMPTY CUP she was told this would cost £5.75 for the privilege of an empty cup. This is by far the best breakfast and cup of coffee in Clitheroe. Charge straight through the outer shop that sells everything you need to be your own barista and enter the Tardis-like coffee shop behind and its fabulous. Breakfast is genuinely enormous in a way that you only get in the North of England. The food from the local area is amazing and they cook it beautifully here. And if you just want coffee - that's incredible too. After the breakfast you will need to drag yourself slowly back to the shop to pay (I was a bit confused by this, but I am easily confused) and you realise it's actually very reasonably priced too. A great place for coffee or breakfast, but I would love to go there after a long walk in the Ribble Valley on a Sunday, but they ae shut sadly. WHY?

This lovely cafe specialises in offering a wide variety of different coffees. The front part has a coffee roaster where the aroma fills your senses and whets your appetite, and an amazing array of different coffee machines for sale , from the simple cafetiere to elaborate machines costing over £200. Loads of choice, my partner spent a tenner of a few different fresh ground coffees to take away for home use .The staff were very knowledgeable and helpful, and it oozed atmosphere .At the rear was a small cosy cafe, with coffee of your choice and half a dozen different home baked cakes on offer, from iced Angel cake, to cherry tiffin and fudge brownies, which looked and tasted great. A lovely old wooden cupboard dating back to the 1600's adds to the ambience, The staff worked hard and were busy and efficient. We both had a fine cup of coffee which was great, and shared a cake between us . It is a fairly small dining area at the rear, but full of character and a traditional atmosphere, Well worth seeking out. probably not good for a larger group as space was at a premium, but fine for couples. Great service, brilliant tasty coffee in a bewildering choice of varieties, very tasty, and scrummy cakes as well, what is not too like ,Highly recommended, well worth seeking out as a fine independent establishment, a nice change from the ubiquitous Costa or Cafe Nero

Greeted by the comforting smell of rich exotic beans, the coffee shop is entered through a well stocked shop supplying not only beans to take home but a wide array of tea and coffee making paraphernalia at reasonable prices. The seating is split across two floors, we opted for the upper room. Warm, cosy and decorated in heavy victorian style with rich green colours, William Morris style wallpaper, dark furniture and a lovely open fireplace and surround. This room also has a selection of vintage games and a piano.Being primarily a coffee shop, the menu offers a list of around 10 types coffees to choose from and prepared in a variety of ways. Teas, tisanes and other soft drinks are also available. The food menu is simple, comprising mainly of sandwiches, toasties, salads and jacket potatoes which looked to be well presented. Specials of the day included such fare as soup, broth with dumplings and other seasonal options(we didn't eat as such, as we arrived at 3.55pm and were told the kitchen closed at 4pm). We opted for home-made mince pie with cream to accompany our Hawaiian coffee. The waitress was welcoming, polite and friendly but seemed to be lacking a little in knowledge and confidence when we asked a few questions about the menu. There were options for different types of coffee and coffee beans. The menu also included sandwiches, cakes and overpriced mass produced cookies (£2). The drinks were reasonably priced though considering the shop and cost us less than £5 for a tea and coffee. A tiny yet quaint historic building over three creaky floors. The wonderful aroma of a million blends of coffee beans hits you as you open the door. You almost expect to see the waitresses dressed in Victorian costume as you feel you have stepped back in time and are sitting in great grandma's parlour. The menus appear to change daily and, although there isn't an enormous amount of choice, the food is fresh and homely. There is always an interesting vegetarian dish on offer too. You always get a cafetiere of coffee whichever type of coffee you order and the price is the same as a regular cup of coffee you would buy in any other coffee specialist venue. Not surprised that the restaurant was busy, just after 11am, so ended up on the top floor, where a waiter was coping well with both customer orders and the stairs. My drink was brought by a waitress, to the table for 8 where I was sat. However, she left it on the far side of the table, making it necessary to stretch over for it. My meal, brought by one of the chefs, arrived in good time and was tasty. Two ladies sat with me, also appeared to have a waitress who was not having a good day! Once served, no member of staff came near - they had to get their own cutlery and napkins, I never got the chance to ask for a piece of coffee and walnut cake!?!Still not as good as the Blackburn branch.

This is a coffee shop in every sense, you can pick up beans, ground coffee, cups, saucers, coffee machines and all other accoutrements as well as a very nice cup of coffee in the Edwardian style tea / coffee rooms. I had pea and ham soup which is my favourite and was very happy with it. The tables are a bit close together so don't make any plans for cat swinging type activities, we really liked it.

We are local and eat here on a regular basis, the food is always consistently good and made fresh to order. Always lots of choice on the specials board, which changes all the time. Staff are attentive, willing to answer any queries if you give them the chance. Ali is always especially helpful.

I always enjoy visiting exchange coffee. I've had a couple of dodgy visits in regards to customer service but it hasn't stopped me going back so I won't knock a star off. I like the atmosphere, the food and the drinks... Plus the price is good too. And the smell of the coffee when you walk in is divine. Would be nice if the rough edges are smoothed a little.

I have been to the exchange for both breakfast and lunch. I have found the lunch menu to be very nice and recommend it highly. However,my low review is due to the appalling breakfast service. The breakfast is incredible poor with plastic scrambled eggs and breakfast sandwiches which look like attempts made by children , over buttered with minimal filling. The price is not low enough to justify this in any way. In one incident I had an orange juice delivered which had loads of stuff on the inside of the glass. Surprised that it had even made it up to the table I took it back down to the servers. Instead of an apology I got odd stares from the servers and a silence as they began looking at the glass in turn as if they couldn't believe it. When the new clean glass was brought up no apology was given. Very poor.So if your coming to the exchange coffee house for breakfast id recommend going else where.

Coffee was excellent. We didn't know what to pick from the wide range on offer. We asked the waitress and went with her suggestion and it was lovely. So were the poached eggs on muffins. Going back

Special destination for coffee lovers. Unpretentious, wonderful choice of ground coffees to enjoy and/or buy. Cakes and pastries also home made and delicious, though tend to run out in the afternoon as they sell so well.

Having had a bad experience at the Blackburn branch, I went to Clitheroe in the hope of something better. I checked the menu outside, and having found one thing to my liking went in for lunch. On ordering, I was told they were not, in fact, cooking what I wanted, and that '' it should have been crossed off''. Accordingly, not wanting anything they were cooking, I left.

Want to know where most cafes and hotels in East Lancashire get their coffee - The Exchange Coffee Company! Without doubt Exchange Coffee in Clitheroe is the place to spend some time. I normally visit on a Saturday morning and it is quieter then, but soon gets busier by mid morning. With a huge range of coffees roasted on the premises it is difficult to choose - they also have a big choice of teas and tisanes!A must visit if you are anywhere near Clitheroe - there is shop/cafe in Blackburn as well!

We called here for lunch on a Saturday. We had the cheese and onion pie with home made chips and peas (£7.15). The pie was absolutely fab, both in portion size and flavour. One of the best! This is a great little cafe and coffee house, but could be even better with a few simple service improvements e.g. Wiping the tables between customers, and waiting staff knowing the menu.It does get very busy, so best to get in early. The smell of the roasting coffee beans is wonderful.

After moving to the local area quite recently I took my parents who were visiting to the Exchange Coffee Co after numerous recomendations from locals. We all really enjoyed the experience, and it is an experience, not just another cafe. From the moment you come close to the shop you can smell the coffee, and navigating the stairways and doorways is interesting. It's clear you are getting quality coffee with staff who are knowledgeable about the product. I wouldn't say it is the most comfortable of cafe's but it doesn't aim to be, it has an old school charm about it which masses of sofas and armchairs would destroy in an instant. My coffeeshop experience tends to be going somewhere with my laptop to get a couple of hours work done in an alternative to the office. So free wifi, plug sockets and seating which doesn't numb my backside is a must. That's why my return visits to the Exchange are limited, but to appreciate what real coffee is all about, this place is a must visit for all visitors to the Ribble Valley.

One of my favourite places to go for tea and cake in Clitheroe and a little bite to eat. The atmosphere and food/drinks are always spot on. The service is sometimes a little slow but its nothing to complain about. You can sit and chat for hours over a warm cuppa in huge mugs with home made cake. Beautiful antique deco with a nice relaxed atmosphere. I mean you pay more than costa or the other chain stores but it is 100% worth it!

Myself and my young son love this place we regularly stop on a saturday for lunch. The food is great quality and the coffee is the best in the region. As a rule coffee shops may not be ideal for children but the staff always make a fuss and a small selection of games on hand as well as colouring sheets make the trip enjoyable. Service is always prompt and friendly even when the poor staff have to go up to the third floor to find us. All in all a great local cafe.

Since our very first visit to Clitheroe, based on the reviews from this site, we have always visited the exchange coffee company. The food and service have been very good. So it is with complete horror and disgust that after what I thought was another pleasant visit, we found staff laughing at an incident I had discreetly reported-a long piece of nylon thread in my Salmond pasta. When I reported the incident, I made sure no one was listening and new that based on previous visits, this was a one off and did not reflect the high standards we had previously experienced. I equally made it clear that we enjoyed the food. I really can not comprehend why staff would behave so unprofessionally. Heaven knows how they would have responded if I had made a fuss. It goes without saying, that we will now take our business elsewhere.

Hubby & I dithered about dressing up & heading to Northcote Manor for posh lunch or having a low key day in Clitheroe pottering around the shops & lunching at Exchange Coffee - and we decided the latter! Exchange Coffee is a proper old fashioned coffee shop - the smell that greets you when you walk in is sublime - that does really good café type food. I had the soup of the day which was delicious with a Lancashire cheese sandwich and hubby had the special, a ham broth with dumplings which he claimed was amazing. The cakes always look yummy and I gave in & had an apple & caramel slice with a cup of the best decaff ever. It does get very busy with locals at lunchtime but if you can get a seat highly recommended!! I've clicked average for romance & special occasions as it's a café!

Dropped in to the Coffee Exchange this afternoon for a catch up with friends. A pot of coffee and a tiffin was the order of the day. A great relaxed atmosphere. The best coffee house in Clitheroe.

Great coffee, and nice food. A varied selection of home made, good quality and tasty food. However, service sometimes a little questionable at times. Sometimes made to feel an inconvenience and often leave after eating rather than staying and relaxing. Work on the ambience and the service style and the little gem we used to know will be back.

We sometimes visit Clitheroe midweek during the day. A pub crawl is the usual way to go, but this time, after the first pint we decided to have another. We stayed for six and on heading to the bus stop, we had only been to one pub. Why did we stay all afternoon? It was the friendliness of not just the staff, but the other customers all offering interesting content to a rolling discussion ranging from the beers to where each of us lived / grew up etc .... The barmaid (it was her first day) pulled a great pint too. In my experience of both pubs and people, this is rare. I nearly forgot to mention the prices. Cheaper than most places and two of the beers offered at just £3 a pint.
