Had a very poor lunch here with my wife. My food was sent back as it was not what was described on menu. My wife's food was barely warm. Apathetic staff. Will not be returning.

We had a fabulous night in Ex Cellar. It was a night of music, simple food done well, lovely wine and great service. One of very few venues that is supporting independent musicians at the beginning of their journey. There were three wonderful singers, songwriters, entertainers who were quite simply excellent. We will be looking out for future events and bringing our friends.

We got our 8 pizzas gradually over about an hour. My friend had to wait more than 30 mins for hers and everyone else had already finished when it finally came. No apology either. The pizza itself was dry and only had 2 slices of mushroom on (I wouldn’t have listed it as a topping for just 2 slices of mushroom!) - wouldn’t go again

A. A very unwelcoming place. No one sees you to your seat, smiles, greets you in any way. They seem too busy fiddling at the counter. You have to find your own menu, choose what you want, and order at the till, therefore paying in advance. Thank goodness they don’t charge a tip. Food is very slow, even when four other people in ‘restaurant’. Eggs Benedict.. sour dough very thin, toasted and unable to cut. Poached eggs very small and overcooked. I was very surprised we were not called to the counter to serve our own food. No one asks if food is OK. Which it wasn’t. Not asked if we wanted a drink. Which we didn’t. In all ways very under whelming. We will never return and couldn’t wait to leave. Unsurprisingly no one said goodbye either.

So, this review is for Ex-Cellar's newly opened Kingston branch as I couldn't find a TripAdvisor site for it. It was a really chilled evening. The cafe/restaurant had a lovely relaxed vibe. We shared a pizza and tapas and they were spot on, fresh and really tasty and Grandma's treacle tart was superb. Go visit and support a really good local brand instead of all the chains.

Typical rubbish UK dining experience. Rotten cooks with low standards . I paid 6.50 for a dry and tasteless egg mayonnaise sandwich on dry, old, hard sourdough (ie easy to make) board like bread. No point in complaining, they have no idea of what good food should taste like. They can't make a sandwich. The design of the place is great. The staff are useless. I saw the server sticking her nose in my coffee half way through pouring it. Eww.

Nice food, but service not up to standard. We ordered our food at the toll area, and we were chatting so didn’t notice the time passing. No drinks were served to us before the food came out. When the food was served, we was only served 2 dishes out of the 3 we ordered. And waited a considerable amount of time to be priced with the 3rd order, drinks and cutlery to eat the food with. The service staff apologised but it has already ruined our experience. The food although not entirely hot now, was very tasty but the service was a real let down.

Very disgruntled young woman serving us today. We visit here most weeks and have to say that the service over the last 6 months has become less and less customer focused and more grumpy. Even my young children picked up on the moody vibe and asked me: “why is she so grumpy mummy?” Very sad.

Although our food was lovely we were disappointed with service and covid awareness. We sat at a table inside which hadn’t been cleaned, we were not given menus. We had to get up and find a menu from another table. More importantly although there were QPR Code leaflets on some tables ( not ours) we were not asked to use the code, nor were we asked for our contact details. A bit slapdash and laid back considering what we have all been through and still going through.

Visited ExCellar at lunchtime, we had a homemade Tuscan bean soup, and a pizza. Both were excellent, tasted very fresh. The millionaires shortbread here was also very good. We had mulled wine which was piping hot and very reasonably priced. Bought a couple of bottles of wine to take away, which were both good value for the quality. The atmosphere was cosy and laid back, staff were friendly. Reminds me of wine bars I have visited in France and Italy. Just remember to go up to the counter to pay! Very impressed and will certainly return.

We decided to go to ex-cellar today for lunch with my husband and baby. As we arrived a waitress was coming out the door with two sandwiches. She didn't acknowledge us or say I'll be with you in a second. The sign at entrance says 'take a seat' and there was a free table. Out of politeness we waited for the waitress to come back before sitting down. However without a hello or a how can I help we were advised there was no space inside and the free table was for the couple outside who had decided as their sandwiches arrived to move inside. The waitress made no attempt to see how long another table would be or to sit the couple at the bar style seating against the wall. Had we followed the instructions at the door we would have already been sat down at the table but I imagine she would have told us to leave the table. It was the most unwelcoming and rude experience and as we stood on the street with our little baby the heavens opened.

We were walking around Surbiton the other day and decided to go in. Note: the name on the windows was “Le Café du Vin" but it is the same place from what I can see.We didn't check online first. We were visiting the area and just walked in.We were lured in because of the name on the windows “Le Café du Vin" and we wanted to get something French. (I’m French so I fancied a bit of Home food for a change) … Only the whole Menu was Italian, with a bit of Spanish thrown in ! Not one thing on the Menu was French. At all. Maybe the toasts and jam? There were no pastries left when we arrived.Don’t get me wrong: I love Italian food and Spanish food (I’m half Spanish after all) but why advertise this as being a French place and put a French name on the door when there is nothing French about it…aside from the wines on sale, maybe? I didn't really look at them. Even so, one would expect that if the wines were French, so would be the food.. Nope. Even the jars of foods (olives etc..) on the shelves looked mostly Italian.I don't get it. In South East France (Provence-Côte D’Azur) there are also plenty of Mediterranean dishes with olives, olive oil, tomatoes, peppers, fish etc. such as Pissaladière (Type of Pizza without a tomato base : only onions and anchovies), Pan Bagnat (bread roll filled with Salade Niçoise) , Pistou (similar to Italian Pesto) soup, Bouillabesse, Ratatouille etc.. . This means they could still advertise the place as being "French" and serve Mediterranean food if that’s what they want to do. France is a big country with very different cuisines depending on where you go. It’s not all butter, cream and beef bourguignon...Food itself was OK/Average. I wasn't in the best of moods so I went for something simple: eggs on toast. Nothing to write home about but OK. We were disappointed because the menu was not what we expected to find and we didn’t want to drive & park somewhere else again so we stayed put.Suggestion: What about renaming the place “CANTINA ITALIANA” and advertising it as an Italian type place which is what it is, kind of? At least there won’t be any confusion …

We booked a table for dinner for 7 pm to celebrate birthday. Called them twice to confirm. When we arrived the place looked really empty (two tables occupied). As we could not find a staff member we took a seat. After some time we were approached by the lady, who explained the kitchen closed at 7 pm. She was surprised we were not informed during booking process. Shame nobody bothered to inform us so we could avoid long walk in tropical conditions. Greatly disappointed. Such a shame as the place has a great decor and sells good wines. Will not return.

We went for dinner on a Saturday night. Service was painfully slow - barely table service. My wine arrived in a glass that still had lipstick from the last person on it. The menu is basic - pizza or tapas. Pizza looked safest bet... pretty much tasted like a supermarket pizza (which could be what they do). Pizza cutter and knives provided were so dull they couldn’t cut through the pizzas. Servers didn’t come to our table once and we had to approach them behind the register to get and pay for our bill. Won’t be going there again - such a shame because it looked so promising.

I regularly go to this venue for casual lunch with friends. It's a nice place to meet and the food and coffee are not at all bad. And incidentally, the treacle tart is the best I've ever eaten! But having to order and pay for the food at the counter slows everything down and sometimes the kitchen and the staff can't cope. The staff are nice and friendly but I get the impression they are battling against the system too! The food can be a bit erratic too though mostly very good. I'd just about recommend this place but not for important occasions - it just might be one of their bad days, you can never tell!

You'd think for a Saturday night, with pre-booked tables, that they wouldn't allow 3 new (and clearly terrified) young students run the joint, with an extremely moody duty Manager to pick up the pieces for them. We were a group of 6, and two of us were served our food 20 minutes before anyone else. Unacceptable, when the other dishes were just charcuterie. Also, our table was broken and no one could lean any weight on it.2 stars because the food and wine were good.

I’ve been here once before and was looking forward to returning today, but the service was shocking! We were told off by a member if staff when we wanted to swap marmalade for jam “next time you need to order the jam, ok, as this will have to go in the bin now!” and it generally felt like the waitress serving us didn’t want to be there and was doing us a big favour. Later on, whilst paying, a lady next to me reached out to get a sweet from the bowl by the till and she was told “they’re only free if you tip” Unfortunately, although the food is good, we won’t be going back due to the service.

Nice combination wine bar/cafe - good decor and atmosphere, large inside, with plenty of space between tables. Good service - friendly, fast and efficient. Still the best place to chill in Surbiton, I respectfully cannot agree with the comments from John M about customers dogs interfering with the service. Yes the staff do make a fuss of the dogs but not at the expense of serving the customers. Crystal (the manager) would be horrified to read this as providing a good service is her priority at all times. Obviously there are times when they are very very busy and inevitably the service may not be as quick as they would like, but no way is this is down to the dogs. What about the young babies, should they ignore them as well? The emphasise at Ex Celler is friendliness, long may this continue !!!!

Mixed thoughts on this place. Wine we had was very nice and we tried 4 different wines by the glass. Food was very nice but I thought menu was limited. I don't think a menu has to be massive but a small menu should be varied for different tastes. Service was okay but we had to flag down the waitress a few times to get her attention. Toilet wasn't that nice which I always thinks highlights whether a restaurant has good attention to detail. Overall it definitely was NOT bad but whether it was very good or just good is difficult.

Is it a coffee shop? Is it an off-license? Is it a cafe? or a restaurant?Well...Yes. Great atmosphere and really nice place to meet friends or just to find a corner and work / read. A welcome break from the various coffee shop chains and worth walking to the end of the road for.

Walking down Surbiton High Street with tumblies that were getting more and more rumbly we almost opted to go into one of the chain restaurants of which there are many - but like a slave driver, I cajoled my friend to go a bit further and at the corner we came across a rather interesting frontage. What drew my eye were the stacks of wine and the delicatessen-type array of products in the middle of the place and so in we went. The lovely staff made us feel welcome and I got to like the place immediately. The menu is a mix of traditional English / Italian and Spanish and many of the menu entries also suggest a wine to accompany the dish. We both went for pizza - I had the four cheeses and for once when it said blue cheese on the menu you could actually taste the blue cheese in the dish. My friend had a pizza named Aristotle which was made up of pesto, sundried tomatoes and feta. The pizza base was thin and crispy and both pizzas were among the best I've had over the last few years. My friend opted for a rosé which was really fruity. The pizzas wiped us out and so we didn't go for the dessert menu - shame. Coffees and tea were both good for which we repaired to the comfy chairs in the front window - so comfy that I almost dropped off (it had been a busy day!).Plusses all the way and no complaints!

We bought a bottle of the cheapest rose and it was awful! Yes it was the cheapest so perhaps this was our mistake, but just because it's £16 or shouldn't be bad! The setting was nice and they have a nice selection of wine to buy but I've had much better house wines at the pub!

I was in town going to a funeral and needed some lunch so came here. I have lunch and breakfast out the whole time and was so impressed with this place - especially the staff - friendly and professional. It means alot to me being acknowledged - hello and goodbyes are so under rated! but they do them here and to me that makes a good cafe into a great one.The food is lovely and a reasonable price. The coffee is absolutely delicious and served in perfect mugs.If/when I come by this way again I will revisit - well done chaps :) - open a branch in Pompey :)

My husband and I went for breakfast on a weekday and ordered eggs benedict. Our order took some time, we suspect we'd been forgotten. Ingredients were fresh and perfectly cooked, but it was served with mayonnaise instead of hollandaise sauce as advertised - eek! Lovely atmosphere, with good prices and friendly staff.

Ex Cellar is my home from home. I love everything about it from the wonky tables to the superb coffee to the ceiling high windows. It has a lovely buzz, and the atmosphere is friendly and laid back. Everyone who works there is amazing but my particular favourites are Lisa and Crystal :)

Visited the Ex Cellar last week with my husband for tea and scones.. Been there before and thought maybe the scones were a fluke but hey, they did it again. Great atmosphere for writers or those on laptops pretending to write . There is outside seating as well so you can capture the sun when it comes out. Scones are a little pricey but they are worth it especially for a treat.

I pass this place by everyday, and I really wanted to try this place out. So finally I went there for a cup of coffee. coffee was ok - not bad. When I went back to the til to pay, there was a lady in front of me on the ladder, who looked as if she was doing a stock taking. She saw me waiting, because she was literally in front of me! there was another lady who was making a coffee for the other customer. although the lady on the ladder saw me waiting, she kept talking to the other customer. how was this possible? I could not believe what was happening...she just ignored me completely. Then, finally she said she would get me someone to serve. seriously? what a joke. Would i come back? never.

This is a great place to meet friends or to sit and watch the world (well Surbiton!) go by. Great beers and wines and nice homemade food. We recently discovered they are doing breakfasts too and the first time we tried this, it was excellent. However on two subsequent occasions we were told they had 'run out' of eggs. Staff are friendly and helpful.

Nice setting, cost feel considering the location, though a little expensive. There is a corkage charge per bottle if you're drinking in, so don't forget this! A good place to go buy a bottle of wine though, a good selection organised well.

Have been using ex cellar for 3years now and my reviews the r have always been positive .however they are becoming victims of their own success. By this I mean that expecting 2 staff to serve 40 customers when they are busy is not fair to either their excellent staff or customers. The rumblings of discontent are being heard. Solution ger an extra member of staff in during busy times or you may lose customers.

Food is always delicious, simple & seasonal. Perfect for a light dinner with a glass of wine post-work in my opinion! It's a short walk from Surbiton station (5 -10 mins).

I've heard they can be a bit rude in here but they've always been ok when I've visited and they are very friendly to my dog so I've given them extra points for that! The coffee is nice, the food is pretty good - although I've only ever had sandwiches and cakes and the toilets were clean-

Studied abroad last semester and spent quite a bit of my time in here doing homework and eating lunch. Great food and coffee. Awesome staff apart from one of the blonde women who was just plain rude to me time and time again. Regardless, went in there anyway because the other workers were lovely.

Beer was shocking very flat and tasted funny, place is very quiet for a Saturday is a shame as it use to be good when it was a hungry horse.

A lot of Very rude male staff. not a kid friendly place to stay. Front desk male staff who assisted checking out had a know-it-all atittude. Big male staff wearing coat in the dining hall was loud, strong and unkind to my kid. Even threatened to put my kid in a dark room. The waiter during the wedding we attended banged the wine bottle on our table for no reason. All female staff were kind and nice. Very POOR Customer service from MALE STAFF. Place was very nice but because of the experience from the staff and big man wearing coat our stay became a nightmare.

Really quiet as it's a big pub so If only a few couples in there it seems really quiet. Food pretty good, staff lovely. Worth a visit especially if you come from Dorking /Reigate as its just before the ULEZ charge 😅😅
