Lovely location and ambience. Friendly welcome and knowledgeable, eclectic wine collection. I found my food bland - scallops starter, halibut main and trio of small puddings of which the lime meringue was tasty but strawberry sponge supermarket standard. Others enjoyed their ceab claws and seafood mornay dishes

We came for a special occasion (my 60th) which was made more special by the whole experience. We stayed for 2 nights and both evening meals were amazing! .The fish was cooked perfectly, served with fresh greens and the steak was melt in the mouth with the best chips ever! As for the desserts...well we don't usually do desserts but these were absolutely heavenly. My favourite was the creme brùlee but the others were divine too. Our room had everything we needed with a lovely comfy bed. The staff were lovely and friendly and made us feel welcome. We will definitely return.

We read the reviews before attending the restaurant and to be honest we did feel abit unsure what to expect. Venue- fantastic, lovely cosy little set up with plenty of space upstairs for dinning. Nice decor. Staff- very polite, very attentive and caring, always talking to you with a smile. Wine- fantastic… however that’s where things stop. Food- although presented well and cooked very well (we had scallops and halibet), there was no seasoning or taste to the meal including the accompanying sauces… we were quite taken back with how bland the food was… now we understand we’re the reviews come in. The cost of the meal was as we’d expect to pay as very similar to normal restaurants we eat in, however the seasoning needs to be addressed before we would come and eat again. Desserts- average… I wouldn’t rush to have them again. Overall a shame as the restaurant is lovely and fantastic atmosphere with the staff.

Tim and David could not be better hosts. Very welcoming and friendly, and couldn't do more to ensure the comfort of their guests. Both dinner and breakfast were fantastic. Wonderful food, beautifully cooked and excellent value for cuisine of this quality. The carefully curated wine list complemented the menu perfectly. Their AA Rosetees are well deserved. We'd agree with a previous review that Estbek is more of a restaurant with rooms than a hotel. That said, the rooms are well-equipped, comfortable and clean. A gem of a restaurant in a lovely location. Would definitely recommend to anyone with a discerning palate!

Handy for the Cleveland way which pretty much goes past the front door. Very much a restaurant with rooms, both aspects are excellent. Cosy room in the roof space, warm and quiet with a lovely big comfy bed. Slightly tricky staircase on the way up. Dinky little en suite shower room. Food was also very good, seafood ( market fish) based. Carefully chosen wine list to complement the food. The mini dessert selection/ choices were entertaining, but none of them stood out to recommend. Great breakfast in the morning too.

Our dinner reservation was on Saturday 12th august which was regatta weekend. We were surprised that a table was available when we booked on the 11th as this is usually very popular. Whilst the food and service was up to normal expectations we found the prices had increase beyond reasonable expectations costing over £60 per head. Checking the menu a day later we noted prices for all food has been reduced for example we were charged £53 for a fillet steak which was £38 24 hours later. Similar reductions were seen on halibut and fish pies and both starters and desserts. We shall not return but advise anyone booking to check and download the menu beforehand and compare this to prices in the night as it would appear that they vary prices in an attempt to take advantage of 0 Potentially busier times.

Overall, pretty good ,but with a few reservations. Very good staff [bar one] and very good food - the sea trout dish we had was excellent apart from the very dry new potatoes which required a good dollop of butter to make them palatable. The wine list only listed full bottles. I asked the waitress if white wine was available by the glass and was told that is was but only in 125ml glasses and either [unspecified] chardonnay or sauvignon blanc. This unbelievable lack of choice is a first for me. If you are arriving by car, you may well need to park in the new and expensive car park a short way away.

Haven't written a review for several years but this place really pushed the button so here I go. Booked this from Australia months ago based on good reviews and photos of rooms and restaurant. Luke-warm welcome and showed to an over-heated, airless garret at the top of the house. We had requested a quiet room but this was claustrophobic with a small double bed. Our request to move to another room was granted and we went to another king size bedded room at the front. King size in UK means queen size in most other jurisdictions. Nothing luxurious about this. No nice touches. Knackered pillows and tired old furnishings. Basic bathroom and if you don't pull on the top of the shower door to get out you could be in there for ever. On the plus side we were not charged for our "upgraded" room. Place appears to be on the downhill run. No vacancy sign was up but only us and another couple in residence. This restaurant had acquired a double rosette from the AA - so we were expecting something really special. Whitebait starter was good, paid extra for crab spring rolls which were pretty bland. Our main of fish pie comprised of a round pile of chopped up seafood smothered in a white sauce with a seaweed accompaniment and boiled potatoes and peas. Where was the pastry in the seafood pie? Nowhere to be seen in this totally tasteless dish. Dessert was an offering of several small sweet concoctions which you could get a selection of 5 of if you shared. Given what had come before we opted for the cheese plate which had had no intervention from the chef...the best course. Yalumba wines appear to have a share-holding in this establishment as their logo and wines are everywhere. In Australia we know them for their budget boxes of cask wine but here they were shown a great deal more reverence. Only NZ and Australia featured on the red wines list. No European and no other "new world" wines......and this is a double rosette restaurant?? One wine by the glass and that was a Yalumba Shiraz which we passed on. Went to the pub after dinner for a glass of their house red....much nicer. In summary over-priced and under-delivered in everything. Pleased to move on

This is the second time I have visited the restaurant. I'm genuinely a very positive person and usually reserve my reviews for favourable experiences. Sadly, on this occasion I felt the need to leave a less flattering review. Though the food is very good the prices really are over inflated. These are the sort of prices of a top notch restaurant. The sample menu on line is hugely misleading. For example, the same starters listed as approximately £9 on the website are £14 and the main courses that are £27.95 are £32.95. I understand that the cost of fish, ingredients and overheads have increased but these prices really are excessive for the food that was served. Accurate representation should be provided with sample menus. Generally, the restaurant, though pleasant, lacks any warmth or atmosphere. The staff are polite but not overly welcoming. The restaurant was very quiet for a Saturday and generally lacked atmosphere. I believe the owners should rethink the strategy for this lovely restaurant. Creating a warm and inviting welcome, dropping prices and attracting more customers would encourage people to return. Sadly, based on this experience, I won't be.

Came with friends for my birthday. First time I had been here for a few years. Lovely setting with polite and helpful staff on arrival. Had a drink in the front bar/lounge while we perused the menu. then taken to our table upstairs. food was excellent!! Great whitebait for me followed by an outstanding cod and smoked haddock mornay in scallop shells. Glad we kept the bread to mop up the sauce. My friends said the 'specials' scallops starters were good - 3 decent sized ones as well. Good selection of wines. Only downside was the delay in getting our deserts. Seemed to wait ages to be given a desert menu after finishing our mains, and then waited even longer for the waitress to come and take our order. However, the idea of picking a selection of mini deserts was a great idea with a good, high quality selection. Cheese board described as 'poor and boring' by friends and hence not recommended.

Went for a birthday treat but like most of the reviews we found the experience did not match up to the price. Our room was dated but the bedding was good quality. The information in the room was stained. We found the food bland and under seasoned although the service was very good. The drinks are also very expensive. Breakfast is only served until 9.15 and you can’t checkin until 4pm . I don’t think an hour either side would hurt. Won’t be going back as have had much better elsewhere.

We had a selection of mini desserts to follow, just the right size after fairly rich mains. We would have liked a gin and tonic whilst we studied the menu. Ordered our food and a bottle of delicious sauvignon blanc wine. Our first visit after visiting Whitby for over 15 years. Delicious meals. I had salmon starter but the best was definitely the fish pie. It is an expensive night out but a definite treat and both my fish dishes were very good. Would love to eat here again sometime.

Overrated and overpriced. Baked crab was dry and the hake over cooked. The fried squid starter (calamari by any other name) was tiny and I reckon came in at a quid a ring. The waiters were nice though...

My boyfriend and I went to celebrate both getting into university and were not disappointed with friendly fast service and delicious food. The cannelloni and crab were fantastic and the mini desserts we had to share were to die for. Would say it has a smart dress code with people in suits and heels although there were a couple people in more casual clothes (in the evening that is).

My wife and I booked dinner here after reading positive reviews. What a great decision it was. The setting is lovely and on arrival we were reassured by the Covid 19 guidelines being adhered to. The two dining areas provide an intimate setting with lovely background music being played. The service was exemplary and my fillet steak fantastic. The wine list was good and we shared a lovely bottle of Australian Cabernet Sauvignon from the Margaret River region. Overall a delightful evening.

This place is fantastic. We booked online and were worried it may be a bit ‘upmarket’ for us, but we shouldn’t have worried - it is excellent and the welcome you receive puts you at ease. The food is delicious. I had baked cod and smoked haddock, while my wife had her favourite halibut. Our choice of wine was helped by our host and was lovely. All in all, it was superb, and we would go back in a heartbeat.Thank you for a wonderful experience.

We were a little apprehensive as this was our first meal out of lockdown. However, this restaurant takes its customers’ health very seriously and had excellent social distancing measures - unlike some local restaurants. Our meal was delicious - the cod and smoked haddock mornay was wonderful and the pudding sharing platter was totally yummy. Lovely waitress - very professional. We will be back - with friends.

My sister was booked to stay here 24th April. With the lockdown she emailed and requested her deposit back. They have not responded to her email but telephoned her and said we will just book you in later. She explained her condition and asked again for a refund they have refused.

Wine prices are very top end food ok but not fantastic. I have visited Michelin starred restaurants with much better food and lower prices. Produce quality was very good but staff neither warm or friendly. Not much on offer for non fish eaters. Sadly would not visit again.

We stayed three nights at Estbek, occupying the largest room in the building on the first floor. The room looked rather tired and we thought needed a revamp as the window could not be opened for ventilation; the shower-head was hanging off and the quilt on the bed was, according to the label, over ten years old.We had to request water for our room on all three nights which we thought a tad mean. The food, however, was good although the menu hardly varied during the course of our stay, and although dinner, bed and breakfast was included in our package, some of the restaurant prices were eye-wateringly expensive!Breakfast was taken in the bar area which some may not appreciate but the cereals and cooked breakfasts were good. Not sure if the orange juice was concentrate!Parking was a bind as it was in the Mulgrave Estate over the bridge on, then, muddy ground which was not a welcoming start. We enjoyed our stay but felt that, for the price that we paid, value for money was not Estbek's strong point.

Back after best part of four years and delighted to report that restaurant is as good as ever! Best fish pie on the planet. My wife had her favourite of lobster Thermidor. Great service and lovely to be able to talk to the Chef and see into the kitchen and all it’s magic. As usual, started with pre drinks in the pub next door (Hart Inn) - lovely pint of black sheep.Shame that we don’t live nearer. Love Sand’s End.

We have just had our annual visit with friends to the Estbek House. This was our 5th or 6th visit, and we were not disappointed. The menus is inspired, the execution and service are first class. David and Tim and their staff do a great job at this quirky restaurant with rooms, where a great evening and overnight stay, not to mention an excellent breakfast are a real treat. Keep it up chaps!!

We booked dinner, bed & breakfast here because my friend and I had been researching this place separately without knowing it - kismet. We had been to the restaurant before, but our friends had never been. We had a stunning weekend, helped by good weather, but mostly due to David & Tim's stunning experience of a "restaurant with rooms". We will definitely be back, either to stay or eat or both.

What a beautiful place, in a beautiful setting, with beautiful delicious food!! A fabulous place to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We found this lovely restaurant on Trip Adviser and it really surpassed our expectations. We were on a break, travelling around the North of England and I can honestly say this was the best meal we ate all week. The Fish Pie was to die for, and the service so friendly and welcoming. If you're ever in the area, please go, you won't be disappointed. Plus we so wish we'd booked to stay there. They kindly showed us their accommodation, which was fabulous. If we go back to Whitby, we know where we'll be staying, far superior to other local accommodation.

Well Ooo lala Etsbek, you are tricky to park near aren’t you. And heaven forbid we’d like to sit at our table before ordering a bottle of wine, please instead let’s all stand around the cramped bar like the front of a Chinese takeaway and awkwardly discuss the vintage beams our tallest member keeps knocking their head into.

If you want to go for an expensive and very good quality dining experience then this is the place to go !!! They really do look after you and nothing is too much trouble for them but as with everything you do pay for it !!! I have only very minor and really irrelevant quibbles. They didn’t serve any ordinary type of gins - I am not into fancy gins and I ordered a fillet steak but was not given a steak knife. That aside the meal and service were perfect and the staff delightful. Thank you. I would highly recommend it

What a find! This has been the loveliest meal we have had this year. The food is beautiful, my husband had haddock and loved it. I had rib of beef and it was just delightful some of the best food I have had. The landlord was super lovely and nothing was too much trouble. The staff were lovely and attentive but not over bearing. The menu gives lots of choice and there is a brilliant gin menu. They are dog friendly too so we all had a wonderful time- thank you. We have booked up for Sunday lunch when we are next on holiday over here. I couldn’t recommend this place enough
