Tried Epicure in Hemel Old Town after the park run. They were open early on a Saturday which was nice so we didn’t have to wait to order. Ordered an iced matcha latte with oat milk which was delicious with lovely mint flavour added in. My husband had the dark hot chocolate and also really enjoyed it. We didn’t order caked but they looked delicious and had some gluten free and vegan options! The tables outside the cafe have a lovely atmosphere, will definitely be going back

My daughter, a uni student home from for summer, enquired about a job over the summer period. Told yesterday by a lovely staff member that she would pass her details on to her manager, staff member then advised her to call the manager. Daughter followed up with manger today by phone. Manager was INCREDIBLY rude to her. Informed daughter he was the owner and only needed committed people. His tone was incredibly rude, inappropriate and unnecessary. I can’t comprehend how this man can retain staff or customers, when he speaks to a young woman like this. I for one will be telling people not to visit.

I have visited epicure few years ago and was impressed with the quality and creativity of their open sandwiches. I went back this week and was very disappointed, it is now just ok, but nothing epicurean about the food, very average sourdough bread, not even real butter on it but spread, things just topped on it but nothing exiting for the taste buds..it is not bad but far away from how brilliant it used to be . The place, atmosphere and service is very good though.

I recently visited this café. i found the coffee was extremely overpriced for a poor quality coffee. the boss was very unprofessional and he created an atmosphere which was extremely rushed and it was not an enjoyable coffee. from now on I will be getting my coffee from Fred And Ginger

Tried a black Americano it was nice! It was smooth in flavour with the beans not being burned! Can’t fault the coffee The coffee cost £3.20 for a regular and next size up was £3.40! Not sure if you just get more water or a extra shot. Would have liked the staff to explain difference in sizes etc! Overall waiter 5 minutes as they grind the beans and serve it at the right temperature. I did see a menu of savoury foods such as sandwiches pastries as well as cakes. The place is always popular and pretty busy whilst competing with the regular chains as coffee is big business In Berkhamstead! I give it 4****

Average coffee, had to wait 20mins for two coffee's when service did not look remotely busy. I am used to average coffee and long waits but could not believe how rude the owner is to his staff, I don't think I've ever seen someone try and belittle other people to the extent that he does. I'm sure if I was to call him out on the subject he would be equally as rude to me as he does not seem to care about anyones opinion but his own. This wouldn't be a problem if he wasn't running a customer facing business, but he is....

Epicure is different. Ender and Lesley make you feel like family. Someone said it's like a hug and we agree. Plus my husband says it's the best coffee anywhere. I often go for chai latte, the authentic kind with spiced tea leaves, not a powder. Great atmosphere.

Popped in for a coffee, ended up having the best brunch for a long time. Hannah was my waitress and was really smiley and welcoming. Will definitely be coming back - thanks Hannah for helping me choose :)

We dropped in for a breakfast of sandwiches & tea. My wife had a toasted sourdough bacon sandwich and I had a toasted pastrami one. Both were delicious, but I have to say my pastrami was honestly one of the most scrumptious, drool-worthy sarnies I've ever had! Wickedly good! A return visit is inevitable.

Lovely cafe with good menu and fresh cakes. Especially good for vegetarians.I just wish they didn’t have a policy (every time) of clearing cups and plates from your table when you’ve literally just finished, or sometimes even haven’t. It makes you feel like they are trying to push you out of the door, especially if 10-15 mins before closing time.

Coffee is excellent here. One can’t hide behind poor coffee any longer with so much competition in the area. Even Tring itself now has more choice aside the prerequisite coffee chain. Food also excellent by the way. The avocado on toast feels and looks real, aside the ‘paste’ type being dished up elsewhere!

Black Americano very bitter and too hot. They’d filled the cup to over-flowing so I couldn’t stir in any sugar. Shame because the staff were lovely. Sweet treats looked wonderful but a coffee place needs good coffee.

So it’s a lovely cafe, and the people are nice but today I got a ‘super food salad’ for £5.50 and this is what I received. Pretty shocking, it’s a total rip off and sadly will not be returning until they sort it out.

For me the best thing here is the way they serve & know their tea. The pot is FULL & HOT (quite unusual in my rather extensive experience), they use leaf tea but just the right amount, & best of all it comes with a 5 minute egg timer to make you wait for it to brew! If I ever get a takeaway elsewhere I now ask for the milk on the side so it can brew!!! So much better!!

Berkhamsted is not short of coffee shops. Therefore to survive and indeed thrive - unless you’re one of the bigger chains - you really need to evolve and differentiate. The coffee here always tastes excellent; and is clearly made with passion and real insight. Customer service attentive and efficient and the food excellent. Big fan of the granola with yogurt and honey!! Keep it up!

The atmosphere is alright and the food was decent, but nothing special. However, it is really the customer service that sets this place apart from the rest and not in a good way. I was at the café with a friend who had a broken leg and as they were in a bit of pain I suggested I would go over to the counter, take pictures of the pastries and they could then choose what they wanted to order. As I was doing this the manager told me I was not allowed to do so. I explained my reasons and offered to delete the photos straight away but was again told that I could not take the pictures! Shocked, I went back to my table and we decided to finish our drinks and get treats somewhere else. Before leaving, we then heard the manager giving a toddler a telling off for 'disturbing his customers', I had heard nothing from the toddler, it was the manager who was disturbing our stay. Berkhamstead has offerings where the quality of food and drinks is on par but the standard of service far exceeds this place. I won't be coming back.

Lovely little cafe in the town centre ,good coffee and good homemade pastries,cakes etc.

Although the best coffee in Berko is hotly debated, Epicure wins hands down for best vegan treats. The number of options can be overwhelming when your used to feeling grateful for one! Service is great, and the whole place has a nice feel. Would highly recommend!

Cute (and small) coffee house. It was full when we arrived and it was worth the wait for indoor seats! Definitely artisan, full of character and a delicious looking choice of cakes (including vegan options). Sadly I didn't sample the cakes, just the lovely fresh chamomile tea, which was perfect. Maybe I'll get to try the cakes next time (and then 4 will become 5 stars)!!

Has to be the slowest coffee service in Berkhamsted 20 mins for 1 takeaway coffee - quicker walking to other end of town and getting one from Fred & Ginger

Delicious coffee and a pastel de nata. Dog friendly so I was able to take my dog inside and she was given 2 biscuit treats! I know she was impressed, too.!

Always a nice place to go when we visit Berkhampstead.

We live in Berkhamsted and are regulars at Epicure. The owners are so lovely and always stop to chat if they're not too busy. Dogs are welcome and even during the long lockdown all the staff have kept smiling. It's a lovely little haven and we can't wait to get back in properly and sit down. The coffee is the best we've had and there are great healthy food options.

Good coffee, food can be a bit pricey.

We just went to pick up a coffee and a sourdough toastie. (Gluten free for my girlfriend) and the matcha choc energy ball (VG GF ) Such a lovely treat and top quality food / quick service. We will be back. Little tip: there could be a better full menu printed in the window, especially as older people might be nervous to come inside right now. Thanks for our amazing experience!

I visited Berkhamsted a while ago with my boyfriend and we we went into Cafe Epicure for a quick lunch. I cant remember what my boyfriend ordered to eat but it wasn't very good and so he didn't eat it. My food wasn't great either. We left disappointed. I was back in Berko again when I was off work on furlough due to the coronavirus. I was walking my baby nephew back from town so I went into Cafe Epicure for a coffee and a cake. I saw scones and thought a scone would be nice, i can sit outside and eat it before I walk back. I waited outside with the baby in his pram when the waiter brought out the coffee and scone... When i say 'scone' it was just a scone... in a bag... alone. A scone alone. I couldn't believe it. I've never been anywhere that would serve just a scone without any cream, jam, or even a small slab of butter. Being British I wouldnt complain but I will never go back. I think the food is very poor.

The owner of this coffee shop is very very rude,he doesn’t respect anyone.The coffee is not the best either,I don’t know if he pay people to put 5 stars cause he surely doesn’t deserve them. Go to Fred and Ginger

Going to Epicure has become our daily ritual. The coffee is the absolute best as is the porridge, granola bowl, almond croissant and vegan cookies. Even Alfie loves this place

I thoroughly enjoyed my pastrami, cheese + gherkin sourdough toastie. The coffee was superb too, full of flavour and very smooth. I will come again. (I also thought that everything had been put in place well to follow current COVID19 guidance).

The 5 stars in these reviews are not warranted (hope that they are not bought)! The manager is overtly aggressive (without rhyme or reason) and does not treat all customers with the same level of dignity. It is alway a shame when a great business opportunity is let down by unnecessarily poor service (to those of us who do not conform to the majority, in appearance).

Popped in for tea and toast after a good long walk. Delicious refreshments and very comfortable setting. Fabulous range of food and drinks. Lovely people. Vegan options available.

Fabulous gem of a place - only recently discovered and my first visit was after prompt/recommendation as not a coffee drinker so a artisan coffee house not my sort of place -However ! Chai tea latte does not disappoint - nor do the fab choc cookies ... but the salad is super fresh tasting and the dressing exquisite ! I’ve found it not pretentious like other places round and about - my destination place for fab food /super cookies and a great atmosphere

After spending 23 pound on food and coffee, was asked rudely to put a cake away my mrs had from another shop by the owner, if asked nicely would not of been a problem, we soon left, leaving my daughters food which we waited for half hour and still waiting... over a year ago, will never recieve another pound from me, which is a shame as I had been going regularly before.

Nice variety of teas and cakes, central location to town and metered parking outside. Small so not always possible to get a seat, but nice to use bespoke cafe rather than the other chain ones.....

Found it by chance while rushing off the high street early this month: I was delighted to find gorgeous vegan options, frienly staff and a cozy atmosphere. You can also have Your coffee served in Your own mug! Sadly, the second time I and findvisited I was fined a parking ticket, despite having parked on the same spot of the previous time in front of the cafè, and after less than an hour of parking, as suggested by signs along the road. No one ever mentioned to pay and display, so be careful if You're planning to just have a quick bite to eat at this place and find a parking space nearby. Will definitely come back soon!

When we have finished the weekly food shop we always head to Epicure. The coffee and cakes are excellent. The place is very buzzy and has a friendly atmosphere.

I am not sure where these 5 star reviews come from on here. I have been drinking coffee in Berkhamsted for years and this is certainly NOT the best coffee of anywhere. The coffee is average, you ask the owner his story and you expect something about his love for coffee, instead you get told he worked in hotels and hospitality and decided to pen a coffee shop, he also has a horrible attitude problem, everything is overpriced, he talks to his staff like dirt in front of you. My husband got about 100ml of cold brew for £4 and when he questioned it the manager laughed and said you don't know anything about cold brew? To be fair I think we know far more about cold brew and coffee in general than the owner of this shop. If you want "the best coffee in Berkhamstead" served without attitude then I recommend Fred and Ginger 1 mile further down the road. Thats real coffee, served by people who know coffee.

Coffee is good but overpriced. Staff seemed too laid back, I waited over 20 minutes for a coffee! Internet wasn't working. Annoying wobbly back to seats against the wall. I'll try somewhere else next time!

The best coffee in town! Fantastic coffee shop with authentic surroundings, perfect for a catch up or just watch the world go by. Food is really good too, I highly recommend the Scrambled Eggs on Toast! P.S. the flat white is exceptional 👍

This guys is rude to his staff and customers. He charges £4 for about 100ml of cold brew and then argues about it if you bring it up. It always seems like he can't cope. I won't be going back. He gave me a small cup 1/4 full and charged me £4. When I asked why he said it takes 24 hours to make. Yes we know. Cold brew is everywhere now. It may have taken 24 hours to make while you slept. That does not make a huge price tag.

When an owner doesnt seem to care about complaints you need to be worried. Unfortunately, too many poorly trained staff that are quicker to clear plates than serve drinks. When I complained about the delay I was told they were really busy with drink orders. No apology or acknowledgement, then I had to witness them all discussing my complaint behind the counter with lots of head shaking and eyes rolling and I am sure one of them was the owner. I guess they are too busy to care.

I have been enjoying coffee at Epicure for a couple of years now and have never been disappointed with the experience. Friendly staff serve excellent coffee and, while they are absolutely professional in their approach, there is a warm and homely feeling about this special place.

There is a wide array of coffees, some made in more unusual ways and the owner and rest of the team are happy to understand what you're looking for and to suggest what you might like. Great to be amongst like minded foodies and those who enjoy and take pleasure in what they eat and drink. A gem..

Had an espresso which was so bitter, the worst coffee I’ve had ever. Cake was nice which was the gluten free salted caramel brownie.

We've been into Epicure a few times now and had coffee and cakes only so far. The espresso is extremely good and my wife was very complimentary about her cappuccino. The cakes are absolutely superb and the savoury dishes on the board look really appetizing, I'm sure we'll have a coffee and a lunch dish in the near future.

I admit, when I first found cafe epicure on google, I went because it was late on a Sunday and there where no other decent options within a 10 mile radius. What I found was an amazing surprise and if I lived in that area, this would be a regular, if not daily stop for me to order a coffee. A true hidden gem amongst commercial mainstream coffee shops. I ordered a v60 pour over with Burundi beans and a piccolo. The beans are sourced from union roasters which is a great roasting partner. The owner and staff were genuinely positive, friendly and interested in helping their clients learn about coffee culture. I was impressed, they where 10 minutes from closing and still insisted on guaranteeing a positive coffee drinking experience.

This is a back to nature place wholesome food in a relaxed atmosphere. They serve great coffee and a wide selection of teas, dog friendly.

Went here to meet a friend for breakfast ~ on their recommendation ~ and found a buzzy atmosphere, with friendly staff and decent food. The coffee I had (Latte) was very nice, and was presented with a pattern on top of it. It's not the cheapest place in town but certainly worth a visit, or two. I'll be going back soon.

From the moment I stepped inside I felt delightfully at home in coziness yet in an elegant and very groomed atmosphere. My other half & I had scrambled egg on toast with smoked salmon. It was excellent. I sipped my dirty chai and read the paper as smooth jazz music filled the gorgeous space. The woman who served us was so down to earth and friendly as well as the gentleman who took great care of maintaining the cleanliness of the space. Phenomenal care to customer service, very inviting environment, and excellent food. Feels like whoever owns this space- really loves it and their customers. Thank you!

This used to be my favourite coffee shop in the town by far - they have tasty vegan cakes, their chai latte is delicious and the atmosphere is usually quite amiable. However since a few months ago, to my disappointment they've started charging an additional 50p for soya/alternative milk. I can't help but feel this is a little discriminatory and a bit cheeky really given that the menu is seemingly so catering to vegans and soya milk in particular isn't actually much more expensive than cows milk. It's a bit unfair when some people like myself are actually dairy intolerant so have no choice. 50p for a splash of milk is excessive, and they never used to charge for alternative milk, so why now? I'll probably go elsewhere now as many other cafes don't take advantage of the vegan "trend".

Went in for a coffee and snack with a friend, asked for a coffee with a small jug of hot milk, only to be told by the man on the till that he could not(more like would not) provide the jug of milk as this was not the way he wanted his coffee served or drunk! Not really his choice as I was the paying customer surely I get to choose how I’d like my coffee. It’s never been a problem before. He said it would not be a problem in a high street chain coffee shop but was not the way Epicure did things. Don’t bother to go, over inflated prices, over inflated egos. Went to Fred & Ginger where the staff were delightful, helpful and friendly, great coffee too.

Post the Berko 5 mile fun run difficult to find a place for a coffee and light lunch but Epicure was perfect t large enough tables for our group of 9 no pressure to eat if you did not want to tho most of us did. Very pleasant experience would go there again

My sandwich had a mouldy berry. Mouldy berry in a food place. Not acceptable, sorry. I also didn’t get my money back and didn’t get another sandwich instead. #foodgovuk

I have hesitated to review this wonderful cafe as I don't want everyone going there. It feels like my special place and as it is fairly small and always busy this review may make the challenge of getting a seat worse. However, in fairness to the wonderful owners and the great staff I have to say the coffee is excellent and everything I have had to eat there is very good. It is brilliant place to go if you like fantastic coffee, light food and a lovely atmosphere.
