England's Gate is a traditional British Pub and should be proud that it lives up such expectations. The food and the service was excellent. My wife had a steak which was very good. I had the steak and ale pie which was exceptional (especially for those who wish to have some comfort food occasionally . Pity more is not made of the 'pie of the day' as it was obviously hand crafted and had a very generous filling of tender and tasty steak. I was a little unsure of what I would get when ordering as the description and lead me to believe it might be 'brought in'. Top marks when it arrived and looked and tasted great. This (and perhaps other great items on the menu) should be heralded as a special dish (as it clearly was) . Overall, we wouldn't hesitate to go back and sample the food and atmosphere again. Super place, well above average food.

We haven't been to Englands gate for many years and is some 15 miles from our home, we decided at 6.50pm to go out for food, read the reviews and gave them a call. Could they fit us in a table for 2 at short notice. Yes, we had drinks, ordered food and have to say our meal was lovely, service was good, team were happy and engaging. Will for sure visit again, Thank Q.

Family early evening Saturday. First rate burgers*. Really nice pizza. Great fries. Service depended on who was at the bar. They’re young and no apparent management. But it’s a nice place and a good mix of locals and visitors. * this is in a town where the beefy boys are so standard is high.

My parents moved to the Village recently, so me and my partner went to visit them & went out for some dinner at the local. I had the blue cheese chicken burger & it was delicious. My parents both had the steak & ale pie with vegetables & my partner had the cheese burger with bacon. The food came out in a timely manner & was presented well. For desert we had Lotus Biscoff cheese cake & ice cream. The food was reasonably priced and the service was great. The pub was cosy and warm with a great atmosphere. Overall - a good experience.

We arrived and the staff could not have been more helpful, we dropped our bags and went straight to eat due to arriving later than planned. The food was excellent and at a very good price. The locals were all super friendly and there was a great atmosphere in the bar. We had a lovely room, which was spacious and spotlessly clean, with a lovely powerful shower and lots of hot water. Breakfast is continental and served in a communal kitchen area, you simply help yourself. We stayed 3 nights and ate in the bar on 2 occasions, as above, the food was excellent and staff really friendly and helpful. Due to this being a great local pub, which is very popular, it is definitely worth booking a table in advance or you might miss out. We love the area and will definitely be staying at England’s Gate Inn again. Overall, 5 stars.

Poor service. We had 2 people in front & 1 person behind who got served. The barman went off to clear tables, so we asked the lady to serve us & she told us we had to wait for the barman to come back. We must of waited 10 minutes, still didn't get served so we left. It wasn't that busy either.

Stayed here for a family wedding up at Broadfield. Little knowledge given at check in which is at 5pm. Returned later for a drink to be told just after 10 that the pub was closed? Shame locals were still drinking in there. Called a couple of times the next day but no one there to answer the phone and pub shut as we were staying next door in their accommodation. Couldn’t report toilet seat broken or microwave needed cleaning as previous occupants of the communal kitchen had left it dirty inside. Shame that the customer service side let the stay down a bit as comfy room etc. Seems a decent enough pub, just a shame I couldn’t spend a bit more money in it

Booked two rooms as we were attending a funeral locally with some senior friend's who we had traveled from the west country with. The rooms were all at ground level with easy access and near to the pub but at the same private. Each room was warm, very good facilities and spotlessly clean we were all very pleased by what we had found. The pub it's self had a very friendly atmosphere and soon found ourselves mixing with the local characters and sharing stories. Had a evening meal which to say the least was very good, retired to our rooms to have a good night's sleep in the very comfortable beds. The breakfast was something new to us taken in a spacious room well equipped, with a very wide selection of food both hot and cold . This was attached to the main rooms, where you helped yourselves. This easily the best pub accommodation I have ever stayed in. Well I done to all the staff who make it such a lovely place to visit. Mr & Mrs Davis (& friend's)

We booked dinner for our family of 12, inc age range 4 to 80, on Thursday 6th April 2023. Within minutes of arriving a member of bar staff was taking our drinks order. The time to deliver the drinks was minimal considering the popularity of this pub. Food orders were taken equally quickly but with time to discuss minor variation for children and fussy adults! When the food arrived it was served by another very cheerful member of the staff. If you can please 12 people of the age range we presented it is a great achievement in any restaurant but England's Gate achieved it with honours. The food, particularly the house steak & ale pie, was excellent. The prices were very reasonable as well. If we had one minor criticism, they could have usefully had an additional staff member as clearing the table before the sweet course was a little slow, but as noted, the place is very popular with the local populous and was busy. All in all It was a great evening for our whole family.

Boy has this ever gone downhill since I was last there! We all three ordered mussels in a cream sauce. They were tiny and dry. We then had sticky toffee sundae which was incredibly disappointing. I am wondering how much actual cooking to order goes on in the kitchen, or whether it is all heated up from a packet...............I hope someone can prove me wrong!! The sticky toffee sundae was very unmemorable. I wont ever suggest to my friends that we meet there again. It could be INCREDIBLE. But it wasnt.

Pub cozy and staff lovely, food excellent, we were a table of 9 (very fussy as we are WI members) we had a variety of different foods, one person had 2 starters instead of a main, several had Fish & chips, steak pie and several ciabatta’s with fry’s. All freshly cooked to perfection. Good menu selection and prices very competitive for the quality of the produce. We all had a lovely time and will definitely be going back. Myself and nine colleagues booked in for a meal after visiting the Chase distillery so we were all ready for food after a long day. It felt like a very 'local' pub which was busy on a Saturday night which was a good sign. We were seated quickly and drinks order taken. We had called and pre-ordered on the morning of the booking where it was realised we had been sent an old menu, so a few of us had to decide on alternatives over the phone but we're all laid back so didn't bother us. The lady was very apologetic when we arrived. It wasn't long before our starters came out. I had duck spring rolls which were lovely and everyone else enjoyed theirs too. I chose rump steak for main which I asked for to be cooked medium, and I would say it was 'well done' and cooked through entirely but I am not fussy and enjoyed it nonetheless. We had to get up and get own own dessert menus and then get a waiter over as we were running out of time before the taxi arrived, but once ordered, we did not wait long for dessert. Five of us wanted Creme Brulee and unfortunately there were only 4 left but the chocolate tarte which was chosen instead looked fantastic, and my colleague was happy. The lady who looked after us was really lovely and helpful when dealing with such a large group, as was the young waiter. The hand soap dispenser in the toilet was broken but other than that we had an overall good experience, and I would eat here again. My colleague even got a proposal from a local! Who knows, we may be back for a wedding reception soon!

5 stars for the Sunday lunch as it was absolutely delicious and we constantly come for the beautiful beef. 2 stars for the service!!! Every time we come which is at least twice a month, the staff haven’t got a clue. We come for 12:00 and there are many people waiting outside the door as they don’t unlock the door until spot on 12:00. When you come in there is no welcoming greeting, we are always stared out by the bar lady. As there is a line of people waiting outside for them to open the door, when you enter everyone is just waiting around to be seen. The bar staff aren’t friendly and work very slow, everything felt like it was too much trouble. When we was then seated (we was told our table was in the corner and we escorted ourselves) we had no menus as they was still being printed. We also constantly call their phone number to try and book a table and they NEVER answer- we called 8+ times. We come and put up with the rude, disorganised service as the Sunday lunch is absolutely delicious and the pub is beautiful. I know a lot of people that have the same opinion and it’s such a shame as people wont return unlike us.

Just got back from a meal and was very disappointed. Front start to finish service was awful. When we first arrived no one really was interested in serving us. Asked if we could have a table for 2 was told yes and she walked off. A bit later we were shown our table. Were unsure whether we ordered at bar or they came to get our order. After 20 minutes we asked and ordered. Had to explain 3 or 4 times what we wanted which only a burger and 2 fillings. Also came to ask us who had sat us there and it was the same person that asked us that had sat us there. Food took a while to come - was tasty when it arrived. After came to collect plates asked if we wanted anything else - we asked for the bill which she said she would get. She went off so went to the bar to pay. Tried to extra rather than the burger meal for £10 as stated. No apology just that's £20 then. Will not be returning in a hurry - such a shame because had heard good things about it. It does seem true what one review says about locals being treated differently and getting preferential service.

I can’t knock the food we had here - it was tasty good pub food but the choices available were too limited. I checked their website lunch menu before booking & it clearly stated fish & chips which were not available on the day??? 4 of us had the 6 ounce steaks which were nice but came with ready prepared & dressed salad which because it was ready prepared with the dressing was soggy. I asked for no cucumber & was told they couldn’t guarantee that - they tried to pick it out of the ready prepared salad but there were still bits in there. It doesn’t take much effort to toss a fresh salad & dress it just before taking it to the table rather than offering a one for all soggy mix! I would myself offer peas as a side order for non salad lovers - easy to cook & what people expect with fish & chips if you have them. We had “sundaes” for dessert & not a sundae in sight! Ice cream with a bit of sauce. Bit cheeky to ask nearly £6 for that with no cream, nuts, or anything to make it a sundae. Bit of a let down really

We visited Englands gate this evening as a family and sat in the lovely garden. The beer was good wye valley local ales. We had beer battered fish and chips, burger had a children’s meal. The children’s meal was simple if not slightly overcooked but my daughter enjoyed it the burger looked great and my partner enjoyed it. The fish and chips were enormous slightly greasy but very delicious with lots of batter. The biggest disappointment was that there was no greenery to go with the fish and chips may be if I had said at the time it could have been added or ordered as a side but I thought it would be ok, however it really needed a few peas or salad to cut through the richness of the fried food .. even my 12 yr old agreed which is saying something! Also my pet hate packeted sauces, salts and vinegars. On request were given extra ketchup and tartar sauce in dishes not very well presented but much better than those awful packets. Overall a nice reasonably priced meal let down by simple things.

Lovely well maintained pub and beer garden. Great choice of Ale and cider, Robinson’s cider is the best. 2 Courses for £10 midweek lunch is excellent. Will return. Also bar staff and waiting staff all very pleasant.

I wrote a rather unflattering review on 18th Feb this year that resulted in the Manager getting in touch! After having a chat he invited us back, and we took him up on his offer last night. Wow we had a fantastic time...the food (which I didn't complain about) was just as good and the service was exceptional. It was busy with lots of eating and drinking including a birthday party that resulted in a great atmosphere. Will DEFINITELY go back!

My wife and I visited this quaint country pub yesterday with our new born baby for a spot of lunch. On arrival we both commented on the recently painted external walls and the newly installed bay window which gave us the impression that this is a pub that prides itself on appearance. When we entered the pub we were greeted by the land lord (Dan I think), he quickly seated us and presented us with menus. My wife asked for a white wine, and we shocked to discover Dan’s extensive knowledge of his wine selection, I asked for a beer and again he had complete knowledge of all his ales. As for the food, I had sirloin steak cooked rare, and I must say it was delightful, my wife had the Gate Burger, again this was faultless. All in all a fantastic experience, and we will definitely be returning to sample some more of this pubs delights!

We were able to be squeezed in for a meal thanks to the helpful and friendly staff in the pub, which we appreciated. This place was recommended to us by the b&b; owners and we gave it a try...I wish we hadn't. This is by...

Visited with family today. Waited 25 minutes for order to be taken. When starters came 45 minutes later, they were the wrong order. Then waited even longer for food and some of it was cold. Weren't offered any drinks throughout the meal and asked if the food was ok. By the time the waitress brought over the dessert menu we were ready to leave. Overall not a pleasant visit as has been previous times before.

On a ladies weekend away, for birthday celebrations, we booked to go to The Railway Inn. The 3 of us turned up to find the snow had prevented them from opening or informing us, so my friends and I stopped at England’s Gate on the off-chance, to see if they could fit us in and luckily they were extremely accommodating, despite being busy.

We arrived quite late but easily & quickly checked in by a nice lady. Showed to out room next door which was lovely comfortable & clean also excellent Wi-Fi. We ate in the pub food very nice & service by all the girls good. Went down for Breakfast at 9 & young lady who checked us in was cooking it. Excellent choice cereal yogurts ham cheese toast juices etc. She did us a full English & a pot of tea each. The Breakfast was lovely presented & plentiful. Only thing we own a farm shop & my husband a Butcher the sausages were off (Sour) He noticed 1st said nothing to me & waited for me to cut into mine i automatically spat it out & left them. We knew no one else was having Breakfast so didn't say anything it was her 1st day cooking & didn't want to put a dampener on it... If in the area would defintly stay again.

Our table was booked for 8pm. We were served at the bar and shown to our table...so far so good. Our order was taken for the starters and main, which duly arrived and were very nice, this is where it starts to go wrong! We had to ask for another drink, even though we were next to the bar, and it took 20 mins to clear our plates. When I asked (no-one came to ask us) if they did desserts we were told the kitchen might be closed!!! I'd like to point out we were the only ones eating on the Saturday night after Valentine Day.

Visited lunchtime for a quick pub lunch. Two wait staff were welcoming polite, friendly and efficient. Food arrived quickly and was very tasty. One criticism, hot coffee in a very cold cup equals luke warm coffee. Will visit again - a great country pub.

Several of us visited this pub for dinner recently. There was a very negative attitude from the staff, anything was too much effort and when we didn't receive the food we ordered the waitress swore under her breath in front of us because no one was claiming the food she had (wrongly) brought out ....Sorry, not impressed. This pub seems to have the wrong people doing the wrong jobs. Everyone makes mistakes but when you are paying for a service it's unacceptable to be rude and unwelcoming from start to finish. One of our party actually decided to make it a personal challenge to see if he could raise a smile from the waitress which to be fair he did, albeit briefly. It's a shame as the venue has great potential. The food was a mixed bag ranging from OK pub grub to food that was tasteless to the point of not eating it.

Service excellent , food hot and O.K. Car park very dangerous with large holes, Marstons need to repair urgently before someone falls and claims compensation.

We stayed here overnight and booked the restaurant for our evening meal. Lovely staff, in a lovely surrounding. It’s a shame it was dark so we couldn’t see the views. Nice selection of starters, mains and desserts and we managed to enjoy all three. In the morning, the breakfast menu was plentiful and the sausage and bacon from a local butcher were very tasty.

Super breakfast, well cooked. Staff very helpful. Highly recommend. Perfect poached eggs, crispy bacon. We had the eggs with toast and able to add sausage. Also a full breakfast. The chefs special breakfast black pudding with eggs is a brilliant combination.
