My elderly dad and I visited today. Such a lovely teashop tucked away surrounded by stables. We were spoiled for choice with a large selection room of homemade cakes, tray bakes and scones, as well as quiche, tea cakes and nachos. We opted for a blondie and piece of Victoria sandwich which didn’t disappoint. Absolutely delicious as was the welcome we received by the owner and his daughter. The star attraction for me was the friendly cat who greets the customers with a purr outside! This is definitely one to visit and we’ll be back!

It was a little tricky to find as the signs coming from the B651 were overgrown boy it was worth it . A small secluded indoor and outdoor proper tea rooms . We arrived late Emily was most gracious . Selection of cakes was lovely. Tea cakes were the size of a satellite dish !!!. The sun was shining there were full flower boxes everywhere or blue spotted table clothes if you were inside . An exciting find in these day of sourdough organic, open toed sandals "Cafes !!" Highly recommended

This place was uncomfortable. Crumpets on sale at an extortionate price and not very appealing cakes. Crammed full of shouting male cyclists (Stevenage Cycle Club) who wouldn't sit down and tramped about the place as if they owned it making it seem even smaller than it already was. Very young staff seemed unable to cope, service very slow. Appalling hot chocolate which had a load of dry chocolate clogged at bottom of mug which had never mixed with the milk as no-one had bothered to stir any of it when making it. 3 tiny marshmallows. No teaspoon given for tea either. Not keen to revisit.

Peter made our large group of walkers most welcome for coffee, cake and scones when we had finished our ramble around Whitwell. 28 of descended on this small but friendly cafe. We had pre arranged our visit so the service was first class. Despite the numbers Peter organised the cafe and served us himself in a short time . The cakes and scones were perfect. We will call again and recommend this cafe to others.

Disappointed to arrive at Emily's only to be told that because the server was on her own and had already taken a few hot food orders she wasn't going to take any more. I know it's not necessarily her fault but when you've cycled quite a distance to get there and are expecting hot food to sustain you it's not great is it!

Myself and 2 others arrived in Whitwell but there were no proper signs for its location if you are in a car. On arrival (via sat nav) there was no parking at all with no indication of where to park. It is clearly only set up for walkers and cyclist. Although the food was nice we found the staff very curt and unwelcoming and therefore will not be visiting again.

Followed a sign when we had finished our walk round Hitchwood Bluebell Wood. Wasnt sure if it would be open as we followed the track down to the stables and parked. Walked through the stables and then came across the tearoom. Great selection of homemade cakes as well as a cream tea which was very good. Wonderful cup of super hot tea! Very quiet apart from a couple of cyclists but it was a bit of a drizzly day. Would certainly go again and recommend it to anyone wanting something at the end of the walk or lunch before they set off on a walk. Friendly service and cosy atmosphere.

This place is not my idea of a tea shop; plastic tablecloths don’t quite cut it. Minimal portions of food, no table service to speak of; ordered at till, the order came on a tray then was left for us to sort out; despite the bad service, miserable faces and average food, we still left a tip. You have to know this place is here to use it, as by definition it has no passing trade. Stuck out in rural Hertfordshire, miles from anywhere, down a country lane, amidst a mass of tiny workshops and rustic trades, and only visited by cyclists (in their hundreds), horses and their riders, and walkers like ourselves. We arrived mid-afternoon on a warmish early October Sunday, and found that there was nothing left to eat but cakes and scones. Not that we are complaining; how could a café in such a remote spot know how much food to lay in store. We chose a mixture of cakes and scones, and the scones were large, fresh and quite delicious, as was the jam and cream which accompanied it. The service, given that it is all done by one woman serving and one clearing up, was efficient and friendly. Unfortunately we suffered a bit of an insect storm, which forced us to eat up and leave more briskly than we had intended to, but that it hardly the cafe's fault. All in all, it made a lovely end to a very pleasant walk.

Fancied a cream tea and thought we would give Emily's a try as our usual haunt was closed. We were not disappointed with the large scone and piping hot tea. Came back with our daughter and grandson the following week and the place was packed with a large group of cyclists and some locals along with their children. This time we opted for a selection from the menu, jacket potatoes, cheese ploughmans, sandwich and a variety of drinks, all of which were plentiful and freshly made. If the weather is nice then there is plenty of seating outside, otherwise there is a smaller area in the barn. Will certainly be visiting again.

On a hot sunny Sunday afternoon after realising that we couldn't get a pot of tea and a snack at Shaw's Corner (George Bernard Shaw's final home) nearby, I googled for a cafe close enough and also likely to be open just after 4 pm on a Sunday. Sadly took a bit longer than expected as our SatNav took us accurately to the street of the cafe but not to the car park which requires a different route. Basically in a car you need the pub, Bell and Hoop I think, in your left as you drive through the village of Whitwell, then turn left into Hitchin Road and left again a few hundred yards down into a farm track which is marked. You are driving into a working stables/farm so don't worry - you are correct! Park up in the area indicated and walk through the stables to find Emily's. A delightful little cafe with outdoor and indoor seating in a decidedly rural setting (horses, hens and bonfires). Reasonable fare and good vale for money, service was friendly and gong miss the Secret Garden a free added attraction that is really lovely. Granted it was a beautiful afternoon and anywhere would have been acceptable in our hour if need, but this was a welcome surprise and worth a visit if in the area. A very traditional and quite old fashioned hostelry!

Visited twice now whilst out riding and both times the place was awash with cyclists ourselves included. For is that is nice as we feel that we are amongst like minded individuals and we don't need to be self conscious about or appearance but of you are not a cyclist you may find this a little off putting. Probably only applies on weekends of course. As for the good it's basic but decent enough and fairly priced. All in all I rather like the place and can see it becoming a regular pit stop when we are out riding.

Cycling around the Chiltern Hills is a pleasure. It is so rewarding to find a quiet lane or a beautiful view which adds to the joy of being outdoors and keeping fit. A real bonus is finding a charming pub or cafe along the way. Emily's Tea Room is such a place. OK so it is not perfect but I do not want to go to a sanitised, homogenised, standardised, commercialised, nationalised eating place. McDonalds provides this and I do not want to find it deep in the countryside.Emily's Tea Room occupies some old farm buildings tucked away down a dead end road in the village of Whitwell. The site is strewn with old agricultural equipment and looks a bit, well, like a farm! Sitting outside or in it is a lovely place for a snack. You have to wait a bit if suddenly a peloton of cyclists turn up seeking energy in the form of sugary drinks and cake but so what? Again this is more Old MacDonald's Farm rather than McDonalds. The cakes are well portioned and good value. The toasted sandwiches are fine. The service is friendly. I cycled from Berkhamsted and as a halfway rest point this was ideal. If you want a fast food joint then go elsewhere as there are plenty around. Places such as Emily's are rarer to find and like most rare breeds need preserving and caring for.

We have always had a pleasant experience when we go to Emily's but I really have no idea what has happened. It was the last bank holiday of the Summer on a Sunday. The place was empty and there was three girls helping out.We ordered two bake potatoes, to be told they had none, then we ordered two tuna & spring onion toasties., Latte & tea. When ordering I also asked for two cakes also. The two drinks came out after a long wait, half filled. I had to ask for spoons. We then waited 20 mins had drunk our drinks, before I had to go into ask where our toasties were, as we had finished our drinks. The young girl said its on the way. There was only two other couples in. The other couple had to chase up their drinks as they had got cake but they had forgotten to do their drinks. The toasted sandwiches came out with hardly any spring onion in. The girl did ask if we wanted another drink which I replied with yes another tea. Two minutes later she brought out a coffee. We had given up by then. We then had to go in and order cakes as she had forgotten about them. The staff really were not interested in serving, they were more bothered about being in the kitchen chatting together. We will not go back and would not recommend it .

With the false start to spring this weekend we brought the grandchildren over to the farm and teashop. The teashop was up to its usual standard; excellent tea and coffee, and fruit juices for the children together with mouth watering cakes. The only reason I have not awarded five stars is that we have been here before and sometimes there have been issues with uncleared tables. It is some seven or eight months since we were here last. In that time the farm has changed hands (or is under new management). As a result there are no longer small animals, like rabbits, for the children to see. The farm seems even more run down and the choice of outlets more limited – there were no jams or chutneys on sale. I think the farm needs to decide where it is going. Either it is a stop off point for cyclists and passing trade, or it is a place for families to visit, or it is both. If they want to attract families with children they need more animals (both small ones and maybe larger ones like pigs, sheep and cattle – maybe rare breeds), a play area and updated toilets. I have not let this affect the marks I have awarded but mention it to highlight the issue to the owners and potential visitors. I would be happy to discuss ideas with the owners.

This attractive little tea shop is tucked away in prime Hertfordshire cycling country. It's hidden away down a road that runs north off the high street between the kimpton and hitchin roads. There's lots of space outside as well as in and there's a bike shop for emergency repairs and supplies. Cafe does a good range of cakes and lunches. I had a delicious apricot cake. Coffee wasn't strong enough for me which makes it four rather than five stars.

It was a glorius afternoon so I decided to play truant and take my bike for a spin. In reality that meant a ride that will eventually find me in Whitwell - its amazing that all roads lead there :-). Emily's is just a great place to visit, by car, on foot, on horseback or 2 wheels. A lovely warm welcome from the lady in the tea shop and a warming cup of earl grey gave me the strength for the short ride home. No cake today for me, as I didn't want to ruin the benefit of the ride but just FYI they are YUMMY Always trust cyclists, always follow cyclists, they know the best place for tea and cake !

On Sunday afternoon we walked into the well decorated rustic tearoom. We were a party of 5 and the only 6 seater table was messy, full of crumbs and very sticky. I told the young lady behind the counter that the table needed to be wiped and she acknowledged that she had heard me. We were waiting but instead of getting the table ready one young lady asked if we would like to pay for our cakes now or later. I paid immediately. The other staff member helped cut the cake. Our disabled guest needed to sit down and we all took our seats. Our order came and to our dismay the tray was put down on top of the messy table. I asked the waitress for a rag to wipe the table myself. With a bit of an attitude she returned with the cleaning product and proceeded to spray the table without removing the food. If I had not paid for our order we would have walked out of the tearoom .The waitress walked to the back and we could hear her and her colleague chuckling and chattering. One of the cakes had been forgotten so I went to the counter and rang the bell to get the extra flapjack. Throughout our stay the two waitresses were giggling in the kitchen making the whole experience a rather disappointing one. On the positive note. The cream scones were one of the best I've eaten and the flapjack was great. The apricot cake was tasty but a little on the dry side. The gluten-free brownies were a little sweet but good. Unfortunately the service ruined what could have been a pleasant experience.

This is a really nice tea shop that serves very good tea, coffee and hot chocolate as well as superb home made cakes and baked goodies. They also have a more substantial menu including sandwiches and jacket potatoes etc if you need a more sustenance.Situated down a lane off Whitewell High Street (not far from the watercress farm) there is indoors and outdoors seating in a farm court yard with all sorts of interesting and old relics (carts, mangles, ploughs etc), as well as chickens, rabbits & horses. As it is very close to the Sustrans Chilterns Cycle Way there is also a cycle shop in the court yard offering bike hire and spares as well as a craft shop selling locally made items.Parking is limited, and it's a dead end lane, so it may be best to park nearer the High Street and walk down over the hump backed bridge, stopping to paddle in the weir (great fro kids and dogs) as you go!

Earlier today I dropped my dog at the Groomer in Vanstone Parks Garden Centre, my car to the car wash guys then went into the cafe after a look around the garden centre. It was just after noon. I ordered an omelette with salad and crisps with a pot of tea. Paid for my order and sat outside with my plant pot which had my order number on. The waitress came out with a pot of tea, going well so far! When the waitress brought my order it was an omelette on a rather large plate! I asked where the salad was and was advised this it the breakfast menu, you don’t get anything with it then walked away. I thought I’d read the menu incorrectly until the lady who also sat outside was served an omelette with enough salad you could say it had its own garden! What a pity the service wasn’t a patch on it as when the previous owners/ managers ran the Orchard Cafe. The Groomer did a lovely job on my dog and the car valets made my car sparkle. Just been let down by the cafe’ won’t be going there again

Having been recommended to eat at this pub we were very disappointed with the Sunday lunch today. Food wasn’t hot. Beef was tough, one of our party struggled to eat it. Mentioned this to a member of staff who apologised but no further recompense offered. We dined in what appeared to be a shed, cold air blowing through gaps in the structure.
