Embassy Restaurant & Take Away in Sefton

Probably the worst fish and chips I've had. Only had haddock. The batter was so thick and soft it absorbed so much fat which made it inedible. The chips were very pale and only just cooked. The staff were pleasant enough though.

I've been coming to The Embassy for many years with my family and I think it's probably the nicest fish and chip shop going. The fish and chips is always hot and fresh. You have a choice of either cod or haddock (no ambiguous alternative white fishes that you've never heard of, e.g. panga) and the meal is served with chips which are neither soggy or too hard - they're crisp and tasty. I'm a bit baffled by some of these other reviews - it's as if they visited a different restaurant.

On our rescent trip to Southport we had eaten a fair amount of chips. We jumped in here on Easter Sunday but I think we regret it. Worst chips we have ever had. Soggy and undercooked. Kids meal was stingy and my 8 quid sausage meal looked like a kids portion. So many better would not recommend.

Ordered Fish, Chips, Mushy Peas, slice bread & butter plus cup of tea. Lets start with the fish ..very good. Then the chips, awful, it was like eating crisps at times with some very crunchy ones ... watch you teeth fillings you may loose them...next the slice of bread and butter... forget the butter as the slice was scraped with a 2 inch band off butter in the middle of the slice the rest of the bread was dry....next the mushy peas...mmmm not bad. Last but not least .. the cuppa tea... it was a 5 second tea bag dunk, yes a two stir of the bag and then pressed to the side of the cup. All we ended up with was a cup of hot water with milk. I found that this Restaurant charged £2 more per equivalent meal than one of its competitors on Lord Street. VERDICT would I visit this establishment again .. definitely not

One of the best places I’ve had chips, fish and peas from. Fantastic traditional tastes exactly what it should be. Great service from the staff too. They offered a senior meal which was just enough to satisfy our hunger. Definitely going again.

Portion size not bad but couldn’t finish it due to food being awful. Absolutely tasteless, even the mushy peas didn’t taste like peas!! Would never go again. Go to Jackson’s over the road…that was delicious

we were looking forward to a fish dinner but but were disappointed with a small overpriced fish it was awful even the dog refused to eat it avoid this place at all costs

We where looking to eat inside for chippy dinner myself wife daughter and grandson .when we saw this chippy .from the outside it looked spotless inside so we gave it a try .we found a table then ordered at the counter i had small fish chips mushy peas and a slice of bread and butter which was very nice just wish I had chose the larger potion as the food was excellent. My wife had fish chips and curry sauce my daughter had fish chips and gravy .and my grandson chips and chicken nuggets with a carton of orange juice everyone enjoyed the food and nothing was left .good food at a very reasonable price we wil definitely return to this restaurant next time we are in southport .

Avoid this place.small fish and chips gets you half a small fish between2 for 15 pounds.worst cold brew I ever had .stale bread.on the whole money grabbing rubbish.

Only 4 tables of people in the restaurant however after 40minutes of waiting for food asked where simple order of 3 fish and chips were to be told “I only have one pair of hands” and carried on like it was normal. Once we eventually got food it was OK but chips were cold. 1year we had with us wouldn’t eat as was stuck in a highchair for 50minutes whilst we waited for the food. And overall the place felt dirty Worst chip shop to visit

Awful fish, we asked for Haddock and was served with something really tasteless, that we could not eat, at a cost of £18.05 for two meals. When we asked for the manager she informed us that they didn't have any Haddock and the counter staff should have told us. Thankfully they refunded our meal in full. What a shame to be serving such poor fish in a lovely clean restaurant in a prime position just off the promenade. Would not visit again.

No complaints with the food- it was cooked to order with acceptable portion sizes. However, I was surprised that staff weren’t wearing masks and customers had to leave their table to get their own condiments. Only salt and vinegar available- no ketchup or tartar sauce! Nothing was said about Track and Trace either.

We have visited here before and loved it so much decided to return when staying over in Southport. A family visit of 7 adults and 2 young children. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Staff were friendly and meals served quickly. Thank you 😊

I was delighted with staff and quality of service, fish and chips were the best I have ever eaten, batter crispy and not overdone,chips the same,all for a very reasonable price, I will be back, well done lads

Walked in and there was no one in with the current situation this was perfect for myself and other half, sat down and then ordered. I had gone to the toilet and by the time I got back the food was on the table. My fella got the seaside special and I got chips. At first I was like urhm ok but after tasting the food and then realising half way through there was more than enough in the portions that the price of the food was more than acceptable. A quiet and nice little restaurant, the area was clean and tidy and staff were more than helpful. Good tasty hot food, and not overly crowded.

Wish I'd read the other reviews..... A 30 minute wait for fish and chips which were overcooked and absolutely tasteless. Even triple my normal amount of salt and vinegar couldn't save them. 5* sign on the window for hygiene....needs a 1* sign beside it for food. How can you even get fish that is tasteless??? Avoid unless you're keen to be badly disappointed and feel cheated with the quality.

Had two meals for £9.50 as the government’s offer was on. There was hardly any social distancing going on and tables weren’t wiped down during customers coming and going. Certainly wouldn’t pay £19 for two meals. Wouldn’t go again

There was an eat out to help out sign on the counter but when I asked if that meant we got the food half price we were told it's only on certain days, which isn't displayed on the sign. Fish and chips okay but had to wait far too long. After paying £19 for 2 meals we were then charged a further 20p when we asked for tomato sauce which we thought was disgusting. Although there were signs saying keep 2 meters apart the tables were actually only about a meter if that. There was a track and trace sign with a number to text, which we did but we didn't see others doing this and I thought staff should be asking them to. Won't be going back

Ridiculously long waiting times, customer coming in with no mask and staff have got nothing to say, tables outside not cleaned between one customer and the next, big sign saying "card payment only" and guy next to me pays with cash

23rd july 7.45pm Collected fish chips & mushy peas at the cost of £7.90 and as you can see by the pick the portion size for the cost is a disgrace. It costs £10.30 for 2 of the same meals from the swan chippy down the road but unfortunately they were closed by the time I got there. Food was average and would not recommend this chippy at all. Complete and utter rip off.

Ordered fish n chips twice, too take out. cost over £14. The batter on the fish was thick and yellow, the fish was not fresh as it had the appearance and texture of chicken, it was tasteless and made me feel sick, not edible at all, total waste of hard earned money.

2 fish and chips 2 drinks the fish was so heavily battered it was in enable ,chips under cooked and this cost £18.40 . Avoid spoilt our day .

We ordered the seaside special, which is fish, chips, mushy peas, a slice of bread and butter and a drink for £9.50. It was fine but we've had better and for less at other seaside chippies.

Had the best chippy dinner the other day it was the seaside special, well worth the drive down to Southport for the best ever chip shop, fish is absolutely perfect, staff is brilliant and the service was fantastic.

Ordered fish and chips to eat in. The fish had a very strange taste to it and smelt so bad. The chips were undercooked and hard. On the plus side, there was a very nice man serving, but I'm afraid that didn't make up for the truly appalling meal!

Hubby and I visited Southport for the day and decided, once again to go to the Embassy Fish and Chip Restaurant. Hubby had the Fish and Chip special which consisted of a large cod, chips, peas, bread and butter and a pot of tea. I settled for Cod and Chips and a Latte. Once again we were not disappointed, the fish was as fresh as could be, flaked and the batter was beautiful. We say we will try somewhere else but to be honest, its so nice we are thinking that we may go somewhere for the same meal and not enjoy it as much. Well done Embassy, you did it again.

The restaurant is neat and tidy, but that's about it. My family only went in as the children were desperate to eat, but letting them eat the crumbs off a pub carpet would have been better than this. This fish was well cooked in crisp batter but it was so old it disintegrated into must on first cut...even my 5 year old with hunger pains complained. One fish was so bad it stank of chlorine and was sent back...couldn't face anything else after that hideous cack, but even when asking for money back there came no apology. The drinks were massively overpriced and the whole experience was grim...don't they make enough from their Funland slot machines to provide something better than rotting fish and manky undercooked chips. Go to any other fish and chip shop in Southport rather than this depressing 'restaurant'.

We've been to this restaurant many times but on this occasion, we were disappointed. Ordered chips, curry and fish for ourselves and then sausage and chips for the little one. The chips were awful, not the usual standard Curry was far too spicy and the fish was the only thing that was edible. Considering what they charge, I'd expected better.

What a lovely simple but excellently well cooked traditional fish and chip lunch complete with a cuppoa, bread and butter and mushy peas. A great memory from childhood.

The chips were one of the nicest I have had in southport. Great staff very helpful and friendly. Reasonably priced for the size of the portions. Looking forward to eating there again.

We had the Seaside special with haddock. I asked if they fried the fish in beef dripping and they didn’t seem to know what that was. It all went downhill from there.Batter soggy on the inside, tasteless bland fish without that distinctive haddock taste..peas ok and chips not bad but the star of the show was a disappointment.

Called in on a day out with my girlfriend Had fish chips and curry sauce. All cooked fresh to order.curry sauce was the Chinese ones.. very nice we will be back

The fish and chips are fantastic, goes down a treat with a slice of bread and butter, so with the drive up to Southport, will be going again next year.

Don’t bother, it’s expensive which if the food is of quality it’s fine but this was possibly the worst fish and chips ever, by far the worst we’ve ever had.

Fancied fish & chips whilst visiting Southport. Many of the other chippies were closed as it was after 2000 so we have this a try here - there were quite a few people in. We decided to sit in and have the £9.10 special. The food was decidedly average - plenty to eat though. Will try somewhere different next time.

Just been in restaurant and had the special which was £9.10p for large cod,chips, peas,b&b; and a drink. Very disappointing the fish was so thin at one end it was like having a sheet of paper between batter,hardly any fish in it, chips were ok but would give it a miss definitely not worth the money. The staff were messing around the customer service was terrible. Nobody came to ask if it was ok, or even acknowledged we were there. No wonder we were the only ones in the restaurant.

On a day out to Southport we stopped to have the traditional fish and chips.

Food ..fish and chips were dreadful .. fish was practically non existent.. service was awful waited 10minutes to give my order which half was missing when served .. girl taking orders was on another planet!!! Only when another young lady came over did we get any service !! If this is fresh fish and chips at the seaside give me our local chip shop in the city !!!!

Popped in after some fun at the local arcades before heading home; husband and wife with 9 year old son. It’s exactly what you expect from this type of venue – average food at average prices, with average customer service and cleanliness. For example, the staff were talking amongst themselves as we left, despite there being obvious litter on the floor that should have been cleaned immediately. It served a purpose, but we probably wouldn’t return.

In this world if binary opinions it comes as no surprise that 5* and 1* reviews dominate whereas the obvious reality from our visit is that Embassy lies squarely in the middle doing some things well and others not so well. New Year's Day and the restaurant was busy but service was reasonably quick with the queue moving quickly. As it was busy the fish was cooked to order and lovely crispy batter, the chips were a bit anaemic and the portion with the fish less than generous. However a portion with (very tasty) gravy was plentiful. The staff spent a lot of time chatting amongst themselves but weren't rude or unpleasant. Decent without being outstanding.

Not sure why the bad reviews on here. Popped in about 1800 and he about 20 mins wait in restaurant which wasn't a problem as food was fresh. I had the fish special which was good price and perfectly cooked. Staff were friendly, food was good, restaurant was clean and tidy. There was quite a queue at takeaway suggesting this place must be good. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Just wanted a little snack so we shared the OAP Special and a pot of tea, absolutely nothing wrong with the food as it was freshly cooked for us, all our group did the same and I did not hear any complaints from anyone, also the price was very good which was a bonus. The decor and cleanliness of the restaurant was also very good.

We have eaten at the Embassy several times over the years and found it good. Called in this week around 4pm. Only one group of diners sat in restaurant and no take away customers. We sat in restaurant and ordered fish and chips. Chips were barely warm and looked like they had been cooked hours ago and fish was just tasteless. Staff OK.

The restaurant was exceptionaly bright and clean,i had a "seaside special"with a very large ,beautifully cooked cod fillet,all skin had been removed before battering,really good

Restaurant itself is spacious and clean with good decor. That is where it ends . The fish and chips were below average and the mushy peas were getting on grey. The staff on duty was more interested in chatting to some young lads she knew. A tea bag in a cup of hot water to me, is not a cup of tea that you expect in a restaurant but in a builders hut.

We both had the steak and kidney pudding with mushy peas chips and gravy and it was delicious,just what the doctor ordered. Only down side was they don't do pots of tea only mugs,which when having lunch its nice to have a pot,other than that was lovely. Nice clean restaurant and lovely friendly staff. Will definetly go again.

Nice clean restaurant close to the pier. We both had jacket potatoes and they were really good value. The real pity was that the tea had UHT milk - What a shame!

Chips dried up and cool, fish flat,lifeless and probably been cooked an hour before. Mushy peas were exactly that - all mush. Doubt the down and outs would eat here.

Avoid avoid avoid. Chips taste like they’ve been in the sewer all afternoon. Fish is ****! Couple staff throwing stuff around and making a racket, all in all a waste of 25 qwid. Ended up eating elsewhere after a bowling trip. Shut this place down.

We visited this cafe as a family of 4 and we were told were to sit, not an ideal start! Staff were rude and were more bothered about smoke breaks than bringing over the meals. Food was ok and place was clean, bread was stale and off and the peas were awful. Not the worst but definitely not the greatest!

Visited today. Hot chocolate was watery and little chocolate taste. Very rare for a hot chocolate to taste so wrong!

My husband had standard fish and chips and is was a very good portion size, freshly cooked and delicious. There is a larger option. I had steak and kidney pudding dinner and everything about it was great. The staff are polite and funny. There is generally a nice feel to the place. It’s clean and tidy. The drinks were very good value. Attached to it is the home made ice I cream parlour and that’s definitely worth a visit. We got a huge bowl filled full of four different types of ice creams for £4.50 other price options are available, there was thirty flavours to choose from and we all had a mixture. Definitely worth a visit.

We visit Southport quite regularly with our young grandson, our youngest daughter, his aunt, also lives there, When we are visiting we like to take our grandson along the promenade. He is a healthy eater but on the odd occasion, he likes a plate of chips ! While walking through the town centre, recently we spotted this venue, its more of a café than a restaurant. Going in for a cup of tea, we bought our grandson, a plate of chip, costings ( £3 ) for a small plate ! When we got back to the table, we ended up throwing three quarters of the plate away, as they were ridden with spoiled potato ( black detritus ) We will never visit here again !

Came in with a friend the other evening for takeaway, was served by a very friendly fellow called Bob who I would rate very highly. It was cooked fresh and fast, fair prices and 2 more happy customers, cheers!

We called in here for lunch. The food is standard chip shop food, the portions are not too large, the service is quite quick, the food is good and the staff are fine. Its quite forgettable, but for a quick lunch and a sit down its worth a visit.

Called in for a Fish supper on a Friday visit to Southport. Generous portion, nice Fish, excellent mushy peas and tasty chips. Really enjoyable, certainly would visit again.

I've said 'Usually' very good, it was our last visit that let the place down considerably. 6 of us in to dine so a good sized order. I noticed the cod we all ordered was quite a bit smaller than we'd had on previous visits. OK so it may have been reflecting market prices that day and others in our party didn't notice. What three of us did notice was the curry sauce we'd asked for (and always usually served in a sauce-boat) was poured all over our meal!

Ordered a fish supper but the fish was Luke warm, chips were greasy peas appeared to be a dollap of something on the side of the plate. The bread was dry to stale and the service was poor.

called for lunch no smiles on the staff serving we ordered fish chips peas gravy steak pie chips peas i was trying to order piece of bread i was informed i had to have two ordered i latte when it was put on the counter i said is this the latte no its a coffee the gravy was 99p extra the peas 99p extra this restaurant when you had ordered use to be brought to the table not to hear someone shouting fish chips ready and so on while you are eating and you had to go and pick your own up from the counter so people who had children with them were going to the counter two or three times sorry we want go back

Went in for tea tonight very rude girl wouldn’t let us choose where we to sit the restaurant was empty very poor customer service so we left and found a lovely chippy round the corner The SWAN very very friendly staff gorgeous food and we were able to sit where we wanted will never visit the Embassy again think some staff training could be useful

Been coming here since I was a child and my sister worked here and shes in her 50's now ha! Anyways, I love sitting outside in the sunshine with fish/chips/mushy peas and curry sauce...bliss

Loved the seaside cafe ambience, clean toilets (albeit rather tired looking), but oh, the food. It really needs to be cooked longer. Soggy batter in a cafe is a no-no, as are half-cooked chips. The lass cooking seemed to be wishing she was elsewhere...not a smile nor eye contact when she brought the food over. Shame, as Silcock's name conjures up childhood pleasure for me.

Came here on by chance and the place is really good! The staff are really welcoming, prices are a little higher then normal but the food was great.

We went on a very rainy day, althou the place was clean and staff friendly i thought it was extortionate to pay five pounds for two plates of chips.

first time in here and most definetly the last. went in this place for a quick bite to eat as the soundgrounder was closed. should have realised it wasn't a great place to eat as it was empty. ordered curry and chips which cos £3.50. what a rip off. about 20 chips on the plate with a bit of tasteless curry on it. my friends got chips on there own and I actually had to scrape some curry from my plate onto hers as the chips were disgusting and rock hard. worse thing about it was the chips they served us most have been there a while cos they put fresh ones in after that. staff knew the food was poor as they heard me commenting but said nothing. not surprised cos the 3 miserable staff who worked in there looked like they certainly didn't want to be there with one sitting at the table on his phone in the restaurant on a break. definetly one to avoid!

Seniors seaside special (smaller portion) is just right for us at lunch time.

Called into the Embassy Restaurant for a meal after finishing our shopping in Southport. The restaurant was very clean and service was quick. The food we received was tasty and hot - just as a chippy meal should be. We were also served with a really good cup of tea and to finish we had a toffee butter cream cake which was delicious.

How hard can it be to find a good chippy at the seaside?, well this isn't one!No queing system, unmotivated staff, soggy chips, we ordered for 4, one was having chicken nuggets which is 6 on the menu, 3 were cooked even though we were charged for 6, got 9 in the end.Just avoid this place.

Our first vista's to Southport really fancied some fish and chips for tea the one we had been recommended was shut so after a walk about we unfortunately stumbled on this one first expressions look good clean with a good seating area .we had the seaside special cod chip peas cuppa and bread and butter for £8.10 each OMG it was awful the fish had no fish in it totally tasteless the chips were awful most of them was black the bread and butter was stale and dry. We didn't eat it ended up wasting £16.20 and going to weatherspoons for some edible food. . AVOID

I have visited this restaurant on 2 occasions: the first time, in late 2016, I ordered the fish and chips special which came with mushy peas, bread, and a mug of tea. That time the chips were chunky and fresh, a nice texture, and the fish was nicely cooked and the batter was tasty. The next time I visited was in May 2017 and there was a change: the chips were actually dry and grey in colour! The fish in batter was dry, and the batter was like cardboard: I complained and the chips were replaced, with some that were slightly less grey. The food was almost inedible. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant now, this was probably the worst fish and chips I have ever been served.

When ever we have been to Southport we have always gone here for lunch last time it was a party of 12 (last year) just my partner and I went Saturday 3 June 2017 We have always enjoyed our fish & chips peas curry ect that is until yesterday. The chips looked hours old they were cold the fish wasn't much better peas burnt in fact the whole meal was disgusting. If it has changed hands since our visit last year it wont be open long. I did notice when we walked in there was a lot of food on the plates on the tables that were waiting to be cleared I wished I had gone with my gut feeling and walked out £16 -20 wasted we left and went for some lunch. If all that food was left on plates I would be wondering why

Poor hygiene and poor customer service. Staff eating food and drinking behind the counter. Staff handling money then touching food/plates bread to butter it. Staff using phones behind counter and not washing hands. Licking fingers to separate plastic bags then serving food. Tables not clean. Poor customer service from woman serving who short changed £10.

food choice your fish-pies & chips..all basic stuff but good value.get a meal deal with tea bread and butter thrown in...good place to take the family on a day out.

Went here yesterday disgusting food, fish was awful chips dry cooked in dirty fat, we all left it it went in the bin, wish I had of complained now won't be going there again

Well I suppose it's what you are used to. We really enjoy good fish and chips. We ordered fish and chips twice, tea, coffee, bread and butter. We had to pay extra for tea, coffee and the bread and butter was 60pence per slice! I think the fish had been on a diet it was that flat and the batter wasn't nice. I think the chips must have been cooked earlier and warmed up, neither of us ate many. The restaurant was clean and staff ok but very matter of fact and didn't connect with us at all. Cost just under £16. Wouldn't go again and wouldn't recommend

Lovely fish with thin crispy batter always fresh and hot. Very clean and welcoming. Staff are so very friendly.

Called in here based on first impressions from outside and 5 star rating on window. Scores on the doors for hygiene. Four adults and one child eating in. Clean, bright and spacious. Portions generous. Lightly battered cod, nice and white inside, was good size and tasty. Chips nothing special. Mushy peas were good. Nice cup of tea.We had to collect food from counter when ready. Staff were pleasant. Good value would return. Did not visit toilets so cannot comment on them.

Excellent food, well cooked and very friendly staff, a great traditional chippy with meals at around £6.00 I don't think they can be beaten.

After a long walk down the pier and also the length of Lord St - the gang fancied some Chips - so stopped here - Chips were cooked fresh and the sausage my son had was said to be excellent - it was really busy but served quickly - so thanks for a great end of the Bank Holiday

The food here is nothing special but we all know chips fill an empty stomach.I would happily give them a decent review if they were polite.No staff members smile, they all look at each other when you go in like they're weighing you up, staring. It's awful.This place should be closed down. These people are not giving a good impression to tourists for this town.

Lovely traditional sit-in chippy. No fuss or frills decor and quick service. Basic menu and choices but always nice to have a round of bread and butter with a fish supper. Food was excellent

Advertised as Traditional Fish & Chips, frozen chips, poor curry sauce. Staff all wore baseball caps, no hairnets on the girls long hair which was hanging over the ears of one girl, the man doing the cooking emptied 2 black bin bags of rubbish then went straight back to preparing the food without washing his hands. We ordered bread and butter, it was cheap spread NOT butter, in fact for what it was the place is quite expensive, £10.58 for 2 teas, 2 plates of chips(£2.50 a portion),2 curry sauces and 2 bread and cheap spread, would not go in here again.
