My partner and I had a lovely dinner tonight, our first visit. Food was excellent and staff were very friendly and helpful. They clearly have a lot of local regulars (many customers being greeted by name), and atmosphere was very warm and welcoming. Our main courses were bacon steak, and chicken with haggis, both were very enjoyable.

We stayed at this "friendly" hotel on Thursday the 8th August as we were attending a wedding nearby. As we checked in, I enquired if the reception staff could order us a taxi to take us to the wedding as the phone my wife was experiencing problems with her phone and I had left mine at home. I was told bluntly to go online and get a taxi number ourselves, despite me explaining our situation. We then attended for dinner at 1720hrs, and after ordering drinks and food, I then approached another member of staff and asked them if they could call a taxi for us, which she agreed to do. When she entered the kitchen area the previous member of staff who we dealt with was overheard by both myself and my wife, and a couple sitting next to us saying " I've already told them no". This rude member of staff then approached our table and placed a post it note with a number on it and stated " call that number". This ruined our whole dinning experience, and caused distress to my wife as we had no way of contacting the wedding party to inform them we would be late. I asked in the bar area if I could use the phone they had on the bar, which was giving to me with a very aggressive attitude. I asked for assistance in using the phone ( did I have to press any number to access an outside line) I was told no very loudly. This did not turn out to be true, as after several attempts, my wife worked out that you had to press 9 for this to work. I understand that everyone experiences stress/pressure in life and at work, but when you are working in the hospitality industry, good customer service is a must. In regards to the bedroom we were allocated, although it was reasonably clean, it was very dated and requires some TLC. Dinner was several starters, which were a 5/10, but we had lost our appetite due to our upsetting experience previously in the day. Breakfast was disappointing, undercooked bacon, and half end slice of black pudding and haggis was a bit of a shock for somewhere that prides itself on its food. Unfortunately, this is one establishment that we will never return to or recommend to anyone.

We often come here and I need to give it another 5 star review. Excellent service and great food make this a really nice experience. It’s not posh or fancy, it’s an old fashioned Scots pub and for me that’s what gives it its atmosphere. The staff can’t do enough for you and a really varied menu. Fantastic wee pub.

We eat at “The Elph” fairly frequently and although we only post reviews infrequently it is consistently very good. It’s a traditional style hotel with a lounge and bar and parking is usually available on the High Street. We usually eat in the lounge which has a small section with a real fire at the front and extends to a larger area at the rear (a few steps up to this area). On this occasion my wife and I decided on a Valentine’s lunch in the knowledge that most places would be busy in the evening with romantics, often on fixed menus to allow restaurants to cope with demand. The menu here usually has a good selection of popular dishes, supplemented by some specials. My wife opted for Cajan Chicken Tagliatelle served with garlic bread and a salad garnish (£13.95) whilst I chose their Chicken with Haggis topping & chips, served with a whisky sauce and salad (£14.95). The sauce was requested to replace a peppercorn one on the menu and was accommodated without issue. Both dishes were very good as expected and we followed these with a Meringue Roulade & Ice Cream and a Chocolate & Coconut Cheesecake (£6.50 each). I had expected the cheesecake to resemble a “Bounty” and although it didn’t, it was still okay. My wife thought the roulade was “alright”. By the time we added a Biggar G&T (£6.60) and a ½ pint of Broughton ale (£2.70) plus coffee (£2.50 each) our bill came to just over £56 which we thought was reasonable value for money. Service was friendly as usual. Toilets (upstairs) are functional and there is an accessible toilet in the bar next door, where meals are also served.

I chose off the specials menu two courses for £9.99 I had the Chicken Ham and Leek pie in a creamy sauce it was absolutely delicious , big chunks of breast chicken and nice pieces of ham in a light fluffy puff pastry with boiled potatoes carrots and Broccoli and it was a big filling portion . Tommy had the cheese burger and chips (no ketchup his choice ) Followed by a big Elton Mess for me ! As there was no chocolate ice cream for Tommy ,Michael made up a plain ice cream with a chocolate sauce , That went down very well his request the next time !! My wife and I decided to take our dogs to Biggar to this dog-friendly hotel just for a bar lunch. We were made to feel very welcome by the staff there and even the dogs were offered a drink! It was a cold day (for May!) and on entering the bar noticed that there was a lovely log fire on. The bar area was very clean, comfortable and warm. We looked at the A La Carte Menu which was very extensive but noticed that the hotel did a 2 or 3 course lunch (£8.95 and £11.00 respectively) and decided that we would go for the 2 course lunch. There was the choice of 4 items for starters and 5 items for mains which we thought was very good indeed as it was so varied. We both had the Mushroom Crostini for our starters (see photo) and it was absolutely excellent! For mains, my wife had the Homemade Sausage roll, beans and chips and I had the Honey Roast Gammon which came with TWO fried eggs, chips and garden peas (see photos). Again, both dishes were absolutely excellent in terms of the food itself and value for money. The staff were very friendly, efficient and extremely polite and all in all it was an excellent experience. We would recommend the 3 course lunch to anyone! The portions were very generous indeed. The hotel was spotlessly clean and the toilets too. We have been to other bars in Biggar for food and drink and frankly we would recommend this hotel bar as outstanding over their competitors in terms of friendliness and value for money. A great experience and we WILL return. Thank you to all the staff who made our visit so pleasant. You deserve to do well!

Drove through Biggar on Easter Monday as we wanted off the motorway heading north from D&G; homewards. We have been in The Elphinstone before and have never had any issues and this visit was no different. Quick courteous service, good food and two courses for £8.95 was great value for money. As Biggar is a town that gets a lot of tourist trade, the owners here seem to realise that if your clientele are driving it helps to keep the prices of soft drinks down and orange squash and water with the lunch was 40p per pint. Two soups, one stroganoff and rice and one roast lamb with all the usual trimmings and the aforementioned juice was less than £19, great value. We will return and would recommend.

wouldn't have done this but they left a "review us on tripadvisor" leaflet with the bill. I was really disappointed with the food this time. The lasagna that has always been an enjoyable meal, was dry and was presented as if it had been in the oven for a while, crisp on top and then what looked like "processed" cheese melted on top. Garlic bread also lacked any taste. Then the banoffee pie was not what I remembered it! Again always been delicious but sorry this time the base was dry and tasteless. Really disappointed this time. The one lovely thing about our meal was the staff. The lovely young lady that served us was a joy. Sorry but this time really disappointed. Hopefully next time will be better.

Really friendly restaurant with a good menu selection, including weekly specials. I use it on a weekly basis and am never stuck for choice. Steaks are excellent quality

My husband and I visited the Abbeygreen Cafe today for lunch enroute from Elgin to Warwickshire. It is ideally situated just off the M74 motorway. We had a warm welcome from the friendly staff and the food, drink and service were excellent. Prices were very reasonable . We would highly recommend. !

Always great food and service, they’ve really turned the place around from a cafe to a restaurant. Going to give the steak night a try next!

Arrived at cafe approx 1.00 pm, party of four. We adhered to the ‘please wait sign before being seated ‘ for couple of minutes and no one came so as there were empty seats we proceeded to sit down. Shortly thereafter a young girl , waitress, appeared and began chastising us while literally throwing the menus in front of us. She launched into a tirade about ‘in the future wait before taking a seat the signs are there for a reason’! We accept that you clearly expect protocol to be followed to the letter busy or not. However I think it’s fair to expect to be spoken to in a professional, respectful manner and not an angry attitudinal one as we experienced from this young girl today. We have been long time weekly regulars but after this incident , sad to say will not be returning!
