We visited this curry house recently with a group of friends and can say in all honest it’s the worst curry we have had locally. Food was very poor. The meat/chicken was in our opinion pre-cooked before having sauce added, whatever the dish. A chicken balti should not have over-dried pink chicken if cooked fresh and authentically. Furthermore it was very dry and tasteless.

Was here with a large group of friends. Shown to our table and the staff looked after us really well. Food was ok and as we hadn't seen each other for ages, we just wanted to chat. In some restaurants they would chase you out when you had finished but they let us be. Not sure why I couldn't give a 5 star but it didn't quite feel like it. But not far off.

Very busy restaurant on Knowle high street. Menu had lots of options. I went for the Allora Special Balti which certainly didn’t disappoint. Plenty of meat and a very tasty sauce. Would definitely visit again if in the area.

Visited with my son midweek early evening, I’ve visited many curry houses over the last 40 years so I reckon I know a decent curry !! I haven’t been to the Ellora for years so was looking forward to it , we both had chicken and spinach curry , however we both thought it was very average and not exactly cheap so I wouldn’t rush back

We have just literally thrown our takeaway in the bin after waiting over an hour to collect. For example my lamb Rogan Josh tasted burnt, was very oily, and unlike no Rogan Josh I’ve ever tasted before. The naan was like cardboard…. Expensive rubbish, not happy

We arrived very late in knowle as we’re staying at a local guest house and had an early flight next morn I don’t think we got to the restaurant til around 11.30pm .This restaurant was recommended to us by Mary n les from the local guest house the Achill . It did not disappoint! Beautiful food ! And great service ! Will def go again when using the guest house again .

I have a great affinity for this place because I met my wife (to be) 32 years ago and this is where we first dined together. We have been back again and again over the years with a changing landscape in Knowle and Dorridge for good Indian restaurants. The competition is fierce but with The Bilash and Café Saffron now gone, even Lloyds didn't survive intact after Covid. Luckily though, The Ellora is still here and doing very well, probably because it's extremely good, just look at how busy it gets. I had the Chicken tikka puri to start, which was gorgeous and then we had mains of: Chicken biryani and Sea bass chittagong. The latter Sea bass was mine and is marinated in spices and served with a sauce comprising of coconut cream & lime; absolutely amazing. We are familiar enough with curry houses around us to know The Ellora is seriously good. The mere fact that few are anywhere near as busy as here says it all. Definitely the best for us with great service too.

Just popped in for takeaway, but was treated like staying guests by very polite and attentive waiters. Food was just as fantastic when we got home.

This was our second visit to ELLORA after a disappointing first one! However tonight was much better, with service and food both good! I had the chicken tikka Jalfrezi which was well spiced and cooked with a lovely flavour, our friends had chicken Korma and a balti chicken masala extra spicy which were both good. Would now revisit for third time and would now also recommend!

We visited ellora last night for the 1st time, having wanted to go for a while finally made it. The food was delicious, we had 4 different dishes with nans and rice and it was great value for money. A good drinks menu aswell! The staff that run it were friendly and we had a wonderful evening and already deciding when to go next.

Ordered 2 different curries both completely over salted and running in yellow oil, not an authentic curry, lacked proper spices and flavour, Nan bread not much better. This was the worst curry we have had in a long time not really edible - provided constructive feedback to the staff who struggled to understand, in fact were not the friendliest of waiters contrary to what you normally find in this type of restaurant, appeared very tired, uninterested in customers. Similar to previous review vacuuming around takes while people eating is not good. If you want a decent curry try Asher’s in Bham or get a jar - but not the Ellora. On a good point Malbec was ok for the price…

Food was awful, three different curry dishes all completely saturated with tomato purée and over salted. Rendering food almost inedible. Whilst we were eating one of the staff members proceeded to vacuum the carpet from which emanated a horrible smell. Not an enjoyable experience.

Took a large party, so pre-booking required and staff flexible enough to add one more. Chosen as three friends recommended the venue. Food was great, some chose to take home as too much! Well presented. Service on a busy evening was ample, though business-like, rather than charming as many curry places can be. The maite d' was excellent and explained their fifty-five year history of service.

The sumptuous meal complimented the friendly and inviting ambience of the restaurant. The staff were polite and helpful when we were ordering the food. Only downside was slight delay with our meal as there was a lot of takeaway orders but overall an excellent experience and hoping to go back soon for more!!!

I very rarely write reviews, but I simply had to scribble a few words about our experience at Ellora. In summary, one of the most tasteless curries I have ever had the misfortune to pay for. A dull and bland restaurant which serves up similarly dull and bland food. How this restaurant has stayed in business is simply beyond me if the food we were served is representative of the food they usually serve. One person in my group said it was so poor, they wouldn't even return should they offer it for free. A very disappointing and frustrating evening.

Lovely restaurant with great service. Nice old fashion touch at the end of the meal with warm towels being provided to wipe your hands. Management and staff clearly care about the guest experience and pay close attention to your needs (which not all restaurants do), catering to any special requests you may have. Relaxed, enjoyable experience. Only disappointment was that the tea I ordered was minimal quantity, in a very small cup!

It’s not often that the takeaway meals from Indian restaurants are as good as eating in but our recent experiences of both at Ellora in Knowle have been excellent. My wife and I last shared a Lamb Jalfrezi and Chicken Naga and they were delicious. The quality of the meat was top notch and the flavours of both of these strong tasting dishes were as good as it gets. I still can’t believe that I used to go here when it first opened in the 60s - it’s well and truly stood the test of time.

Party visit on a busy night, but great service and the best curries we’ve had in a long time. Booking is recommended as it was full.

Dinner last night was ok, too much red colour in the prawn puri and very overcooked chicken in my main. The waiters really didn't know what they were doing, took 3 requests for a jug of water to appear and they leant over everyone to serve food and collect plated when there was plenty of room to access diners individually.I don't expect silver service in an Indian restaurant but I really don't want a waiters armpit in my face either.

Whenever I go for a curry with the family it’s always at the ellora; the food cannot be beaten. The staff are super friendly knowledgeable and good with children. The atmosphere is super relaxed with good clients. If I could award 6 stars, I would.

Wow amazing food. Extremely busy & so lucky that this restaurant managed to fit us in at short notice on a Saturday night. Great menu for all tastes, food piping hot, & such tasty ingredients. Plates warmed, table warmer supplied, linen table cloths & napkins. Bathrooms spotlessly clean.It’s what my husband & I would call an “old school” style meal. As too many restaurants now are all this fusion style, with over priced tiny portions. Ellora is reasonably priced, large portions & genuinely felt like an authentic restaurant. We attend a weekend exhibition at the NEC every year and always eat twice at this restaurant. The food is never less then excellent, the only problem is making a choice from the extensive menu! The restaurant is usually very busy so be sure to book. The manager and his team are a wonder to behold in the way that they cope with the numbers but still manage to be friendly and attentive. Our only regret after a meal is the fact that we do not live closer.

True Value for Money All You Can Eat Buffet, the quality and quantity cannot be believed. Plus I could not believe the number of people actually going back for seconds, third and in two cases fourths ....Four of us ate three courses with drinks and paid only £70 including gratuities.

Great food at this place,in fact we travelled from Kidderminster because it’s that good! Would recommend the chicken tikka saag and Peshawari naan. Definitely pappadoms and pickle tray to start. Nice relaxed atmosphere and great service.

A very warm and welcoming place,very clean and well presented .The food was fairly priced and the menu was varied and catered for all tastes.The starters delicious,the Desi Platter for two was well cooked and very well spiced.The mains were good,I had chicken vindaloo which was perfectly spiced and cooked.My partner had Coriander Chicken which was cooked well,but she could not taste the coriander at all,which made the dish bland in flavour,the vegetable pilau rice was very good,good variety of vegetables.Would recommend a visit as it was nice.

We have lived in Knowle 21 years & I can honestly say this restaurant never fails to amaze me. The food is consistently excellent & the staff are friendly and most helpful. We were a party of 23 who had to relocate to the Ellora within 24 hours as a neighbouring restaurant went into administration and and closed suddenly. Consequently they had to cope with the large influx of customers as well as those who had already booked ! In spite of the huge pressure, we were all served our starters more or less together and the main courses arrived quite promptly which was no mean feat as of course the waiters had to identify who had ordered what - anything but easy with 23 people sitting at one table ! They did a splendid job and it was appreciated by all of us.

As all of you know who live locally we are spoilt in this village for our Indian restaurants, but tonight I have experienced from the Ellora the most sensational buffet meal ever. They only do it on a Sunday and Monday evening but let me tell you it was a real treat, I can't recommend it enough A big thanks to the team in the Ellora, you have just made Monday a very special day for me £12.95 for all you can, the quality of each dish sublime

Its time to declare support - I have been using the Ellora for a number of years often with visitors staying over, who are always impressed, always good service and value for money. Buffet night is particularly good value and diverse if you have a nervous curry customer with you. Great for kids.

We hadn't visited the Ellora for many years, and it had been a rather old-fashioned curry house, but on this visit we discovered it has been nicely redecorated and was comfortable. The food was good. It is not anything really special or particularly interesting, but it does great curries to a high standard. The chef's specialities offer some variety, without being too far-fetched. We were there on a busy night, but the service was perfectly good enough.

There are a good number of Indian restaurants in Knowle and I hadn’t been to the Ellora for some time. The buffet night clearly attracts a lot of people and the number of covers meant that you feel a bit rushed. The upside to that is that most of the good range of dishes don’t sit around, although a couple were not very hot once plated, and you can see the turnover of new tins on the heaters

The waiter who greeted was rude and sullen. The cubed tandoori chicken is not what I asked for and was met with “we’ve been doing this for 12 years.” They are not worthy of this name. Supermarket curry.

Excellent first meal at this restaurant, we run the Solihull Couples Dining Club and this was a great find for us.

This place has been around for ages - Knowle is hardly short of good dining options, not least curry options, with others including Bilash, Saffron and Lloyds all within 100 meters of each other. Ellora takes some beating - the food is always prepared to a high quality and the meat:sauce ratio (a good indicator to my mind !) is always high/above average compared with its competitors in Knowle. Sunday and Monday they do buffet service - basically a limited range off pre-prepared options, covering most bases, at a reasonable price c20.00 per head. Takeaway is always busy - covers are pretty much always full and booking beforehand is recommended to avoid disappointment. They could easily trade out of larger premises - but IMO it would take away from the level of service they provide/experience. If you are a curry lover - make time to go. Well done Ellora.

This place has been here for decades and we have been here many times over the years. We were a little disappointed on our last visit as the menu on the website does not reflect the in house menu - certainly not on price. It’s much more expensive. Most of the dishes we ordered seemed to have a little too much red about them - food colouring ?

Love this place it is very clean, great customer service and food is fantastic. Its the only place we go to for a good curry as we know we will leave satisfied. They also do a takeaway service (collection only) which is still great!!

We went on a Monday with friends who had pre-booked the table. There was a choice of the buffet or you could select a la carte. The staff were lovely, really friendly and efficient. Three of us opted for the buffet whilst the other member of our party selected form the a la carte. We helped ourselves to the starters. There was plenty of variety and it was really fresh and tasty. The a la carte main course was timed perfectly to arrive at the table when we had plated up our main courses from the buffet. It was lovely to all have the food at the same time as sometimes you end up eating in shifts. Drinks were served promptly. Lovely evening in a very nice restaurant. I would definitely recommend a visit.

A great restaurant and great buffet that was spoilt by a bunch of drunks who were allowed to swear and shout at only 8 pm when we were having a family meal with children.

We visit Ellora relatively regularly, mainly for takeaway but we also love to stay there for dinner! The food is always fresh and served quickly. And they’ve got pretty good choice of dishes too! Highly recommended

Used this restaurant since the 70's and it's still producing good Asian food. The menu is standard Indian cuisine as expected but we'll presented and good quality.

This is one of my favourite Indian Restaurants and my family eat here and get take-away regularly. The staff are great and very helpful, they always remember your name if you’re a regular customer. The food is always amazing and well presented.

Food was OK for an Indian. Being a brummie we do differentiate between the great and the average. Ellora was not great, food was OK, if you like spicy ask for it, Pricking what would typically by a spicy course may leave you experiencing a not so spicy "Tourist" medium course.

I visited this restaurant with a friend for the buffet on Monday. Overall, there is a good choice of quality food, and is worth the price (we paid £12.95 each).

Visited allora this evening with my partner, as we walked inside I was rudely greeted by a member of staff, when he questioned us on whether we had a reservation he made it clear that it was inconvenient that we didn’t, myself and my partner then sat down for a meal the same member of staff was very rude when asking what we wanted to drink like he wanted to rush our time on being there and also if we were having the buffet that they were serving. Because we wanted something off the menu he didn’t seem to pleased

Sometimes drop in here after a couple of drinks in Knowle, always a lot of room to sit down to eat and people enjoying themselves. Really welcoming and a fantastic curry - well recommend the Sunday and Monday Dinner Dash.
