Sunday lunch, a bit busy. We were limited to six and had a table by the door opening onto the wigwam. Unfortunately the servers and customers made frequent use of the door letting cold and bumping against our char backs.. it ideal. I had the lentil Wellington which was adventurous and tasty. We did not start for dessert. A mixed bit and a mixed review. The parking area could use some serious TLC.

Have been here many times over the years but today we were extremely disappointed with the quality of the food we had for lunch. Three of us had haddock and chips, the batter on the fish was not golden and crispy, the fish had skin on with stodgy dark batter. Probably had 20 garden peas which were slightly hard. The chips and the tartare sauce were nice. For dessert, the lemon cheesecake was chosen by our friends and neither enjoyed it as it was tasteless. We didn’t complain to the staff because we’d chosen the venue and didn’t want to embarrass our friends. So sad as this pub has always been a great place for lunch….we won’t be going again or recommending it.

Just returned from Sunday lunch at the pub with our dog in tow. They have two great outdoor areas front and back - one more family friendly and one better for couples or adult only groups. On arrival within minutes a water bowl and some treats arrived and once we'd finished them we ordered some more for our dog!! The staff were all excellent and very professional and seemed to genuinely like dogs. Loved the Sunday Roast which was plentiful and beautifully cooked. As an Ale drinker the Farr Brewery pale ale was delicious. This pub is truly a hidden gem and while not the easiest to find I would highly recommend it.

We booked when there was a retirement party in the rear garden. The staff should have advised us of this as they could not cope with the regular customers. Meals arrived at 10 minute intervals . One meal was presented twice. We asked 4 times for a missing side it did not arrive but was added to the bill. If we had been advised that it was busy we might have chosen a sharing platter. If there is a private event then more staff should be employed to cater for regulars.

Sadly, this was a disappointing evening. It was a birthday and anniversary celebration that we advised When booking in advance. Food was good- but pricey. Service and wait time not great. No attention to detail We ended up collecting our own drinks from the bar after we watched them being poured and left. No attention to detail- and no mention of the birthday or anniversary!!! Such a shame.

We took my elderly parents for an evening meal on Saturday and had a wonderful time. We sat indoors as there was a wedding in the Tipee out back. We thought that the staff may have trouble coping with everything that was going on, but no. Service was efficient, friendly and ran like a well oiled machine. We ordered the fish pie, chicken supreme, chicken pie and rump steak, all washed down with a selection of Farr Brew beers. Everything was delicious and cooked to perfection. What more could you want within the welcoming ambiance of this historic pub.

Went here with my eldest daughter and Charlie my puppy ( blue staffie) his good by the way they are great dogs, however some owners are not. Anyway it was very busy for a lunchtime mainly due to the wonderful sunshine I think also the pub has always had a good reputation, we ordered food one meal from the main and one from the express lunch menu,it arrived in good time, sadly as my daughter cut open her fish it was clear the batter was not cooked fully, We sent back and ordered a fish finger sandwich instead, which arrived quickly and with no issues. I would to say that I would go back to this pub without any problem, the staff were fantastic, the pub was great and they dealt with the issue, then to top it off they only charged me for one meal without out me asking. The last point I would like to add is the girl who was working the kitchen and bringing the food out was brilliant and so hard working, her customer service was outstanding friendly and sincere. If you have a dog this pub is dog 🐕 the garden is lovely and plenty of walks nearby. See you soon hopefully

Staff friendly and helpful but meal absolutely dire. 1 to 1.5 slices of shaved meat with reheated veg, and deep fried spud chunks. Think Wetherspoons on a bad day but double the price. We went a few weeks back and both received 1 small slice/shaving of beef in a £21 per person meal (£14 roast + £7 starter). The slice was propped up with cabbage underneath to make it look bigger. My wife gave a good review on Facebook for everything but pointed out the 1 slice. At the the time, had I been bothered, I would have highlighted the deep fried "roasties" My wife had a good response from the owner, saying 1 slice was not policy and offering us a complimentary roast if we came back. We went back today and honestly had a worse experience. To start with, the squid in panko breadcrumbs starter was in batter. This had been OK last time. No-one said "we've run out but can substitute, is that OK?" To be fair they were OK, just not what was advertised, or ordered. A little overpriced at £7 for 5 or 6 deep fried, battered squid rings with 1 small pot of flavoured mayo, and no salad. For our main, we again ordered 2 roast beef, and remembering we'd had to wait 10 mins after receiving the meal for the horseradish to be delivered last time, we specifically said "with horseradish", and the waitress confirmed. 30 mins or so after our starter, 2 roast beef arrived cold, and with no horseradish...we asked again. While the waitress was gone, my wife said, where's the gravy? We'd been given a gravy boat last time but none this time. So 5 minutes later a waiter arrived with the horseradish. Then we asked for the gravy, and he said the waitress would be out soon. 5 minutes later, the waitress was serving another table so we called her over...could we have some gravy? Another 5 minutes and we realised the waitress had appeared again, serving someone else...can we have that gravy? Oh, you want "extra" gravy? No, we just want gravy, no "extra" about it. While we waited again, now more than 20 minutes after a cold meal was served, my wife pointed out that if you put her 2 slices next to one another, they matched...it was 1 slice cut in 2. I did have 2 slices, but 1 was just a half slice of chewy meat. Eventually the gravy arrived. Last time we were here, my wife thought the carrots were tinned, and I said, no, no, they'll just be Brakes...and indeed, I checked, everything in the plate is pre-prepared by Brakes. If you have a roast here, think Wetherspoons, but double the price...£14. I checked one of the pubs I used to work at on Richmond Hill, and theirs is £14.49..fully prepared and cooked on the premises, with 2 to 3 slices of thick sliced beef. E&C, 1 to 1.5 slices of shaved meat with reheated veg and deep fried spud chunks and stuffing. They give you deep fried potato chunks and call them "roasted potatoes", deep fried stuffing balls that wouldn't have looked out of place in the barrel of a flint lock, and their yorkies and veg are reheated pre-prepared Brakes Brothers produce...appalling. To top it all off, they tried to charge for the complimentary meals, and when we sent the bill back, they also tried to charge me for my first pint, that I returned, due to it having sediment in. I had to go in to discuss the issues and get the bill rectified. I vowed not to return last time, and was persuaded by the complimentary meal...never again, not even for a complimentary meal...the worst roast I've had. The only positive was the staff trying to help. Even then though, they're saying "why didn't you say?" ...we did - that's why we were offered complimentary meals and came back this time. Appalling!...never again.

The tipi was a perfect setting for a meal outside - looking beautiful with all the fairy lights, and luckily for us on such a cold night, heated. The chickens and play equipment around the back were an added bonus for our granddaughter. Thanks for a great evening!

If you like proper beer brewed locally at a generous price and locally sourced Steak and food then come to the Elephant and Castle. Even better is the superbly organised outdoor area - heated for the cold nights - close to some of the best countryside in south-east England. Hard working, polite, staff and now an added outdoor bar next to the trendy Teepee. A must for families and meeting up with mates after a local bike ride. Superb. Huge improvement under Farr Brewery compared to Green King. The garden is lovely, the huge teepee an imaginative addition. Plenty of friendly and attentive staff ensured the lunch experience was truly Covid secure.Unsurprisingly the beer (describes as golden by the waiter) was excellent. We ate sandwiches with paprika chips and a small rocket salad dressed with good quality balsamic; no watery rubbish here! They were lightly toasted and delicious. Mine was melted mozzarella, pesto and roasted peppers. My colleague had beef and horseradish which he said was excellent and tasty but not too powerful. We will return!

The E&C has been the epitome of English country pubs for decades so I was wary of the Farr Brew takeover. I’m pleased to say these concerns were misplaced. The pub still has the charm, character and warmth it always had, it’s had a bit of a refresh and an injection of youth. Farr Brew are a great outfit, brewing decent local beer and investing back into the local economy and community. The outside bar, tipi and new menu are welcome additions to the E&C. We enjoyed a well Covid managed outdoor meal here this week and we couldn’t fault the service - friendly and attentive throughout. The menu was decent enough, though needs some thought. The steak was excellent (though I note they’ve since changed their butcher), but what perplexed me was the presence of a side salad and lashings of balsamic vinegar dressing (on a steak!, what was the chef thinking?!). Lose the salad and throw on some onion rings and a mushroom. The chips needed work too. Same with the fish and chips, bonus points for the pollack (sustainable) but if you’re going to do a fish and chips, get the chips right and make the effort to do mushy peas. The real disappointment was the absence of the TRENCHER (google it) on the menu. The E&C has served this little-known historic dish for as long as I can remember. It’s infamous. I asked and was told a modern version is available at lunchtime. Nonsense - please put a chilli cheese and a bacon and mushroom trencher back on the menu. The beer was EXCELLENT!

It’s now being operated by Farr Brew, so the beer is great. The service and lunch food though is sub standard. We ordered two fish and chips and one sausage and mash. The fish was awful - totally overdone and dry and took an age to arrive. We complained and they did fresh ones which were miles better, and to be fair they didn’t charge. The sausages were cheap and nasty. The accompanying bubble and squeak was mash with a bit of red cabbage mixed in, not fried and not hot.The coffee machine was on the blink so no cappuccino or latte or flat white. The service was dozy in its speed and for example we asked for tap water several times before it arrived.Let’s hope these are all teething troubles; there are so many places nearby that are better they are going to have to!!!

The wife wanted to take me here as it was her local many moons ago. The decor was quaint and the staff were very pleasant. The wife ordered ham, egg and chips which appeared to be OK; she said it was fine. However, my chicken curry was very disappointing. The bland sauce could have come out of a jar; it contained six pieces of chicken. This was then 'plopped' onto the rice in a single bowl: presentation 0/10. Accompanying it were a small salad and... half a white baguette and butter! For the price, I really would have expected a naan bread and some pickle to have come alongside the curry, but not here. Will we be back? Afraid not!

Called in for lunch recently and because of the good weather i chose the ham salad. What a mistake, what i got was a plate with 14 pieces of cucumber round the rim plus a few pieces of leaf and tomato, the ham was processed and from a supermarket pack, it was sliced to make it look more however it highlighted that it was one slice of the cheapest ham money could buy.I was asked if it was alright and i said no, the waitress went to talk to the chef and the reply i got was 'thats what you get'Sorry but it was a second class ham salad that doesn't come close to being fit for purpose nor value for money.Given that this is a cold dish with no cooking i fail to see how anyone can cock it up so monumentally. Just for the record the sevice was poor as well so in all i was going to give no stars unfortunately that cannot be done so begrudgingly i had to score one star

Visited on a sunny Saturday, pub was quiet to start with but then filled up rather quickly. Bar staff seemed poorly trained but friendly. We ordered 4 baguettes, which took over 30 minutes to arrive which is a little long for sandwiches that don't require cooking. The baguettes were good with plenty of filling. The food service appeared to be struggling with people being told there would be at least a 40 minute wait. We would probably revisit if we were not in a hurry.

Arrived at 3:15 on an unexpected sunny warm Saturday afternoon. There were about 8-10 tables occupied in the garden. When ordering our lunch (3 adults and 2 kids) we were told the wait for food was over 30 minutes - a bit perplexing given not many customers (half of them in the garden already had food) but at least they had the decency to warn us. 45 minutes later our food arrived - in dribs and drabs. (Along with filthy dirty cutlery) My children ordered chicken goujons, chips and beans. No beans were served with either, instead a huge pot of what we think was BBQ sauce. Not a baked bean in site. When we complained about the lack of beans the server looked rather confused as to what our problem was. But then things took a turn for the worse when my son picked up one of his chicken goujons and bit it in half and the inside of it was RAW. Not slightly pink, as raw as if it had just been taken out of the packaging. All 6 of them were raw. The staff seemed very underwhelmed when we complained and only offered us 2 new meals. No refund, no profuse apologies. Just random comments like ‘I’ll put your order to the front of the queue shall I?’ Damn right you will. The staff (apart from a gentleman who may or may not be the manger) had an average age of maybe 20. They were all naive, clueless and lacked any customer service skills and the chef clearly needs to take a course in cookery and maybe read up about how raw chicken can actually kill you. Such a shame as the setting is fabulous, the menu looks inviting and I picked it because the garden is big enough for my boys to play football in. I won’t ever visit here again unless the staff improve their customer interface skills and the chef changes.

His exact words were "If you wanted fast food you should have gone elsewhere" he was so rude. My daughter who lives in London had specifically asked me to book a country pub. When the food arrived my son in law had a child's bowl of chilli as they had obviously run out. I was then informed that the drinks would be gratis but when the bill arrive nothing had been taken off. Our whole experience was horrendous. The Elephant and Castle is an ancient and quiet pub down a narrow country lane with a well inside the pub and, I am told, adjacent to an old Roman road and villa site. You can't get much more authentic olde English than this! Depending on the weather you can sit by a cosy fire or outside. We were there this time on a very warm Spring evening but sat inside. You order drinks and food at the bar and they bring it to your table. I had a half rack of pork ribs. They came with chips and veggies. I also had the leek soup of the day. Both were excellent. Having just moved to the area, we were looking forward to trying somewhere new. The reviews for this place looked great online however I can safely say, this was the WORST pub I've ever been to. My partner and I both chose to have 'beer battered cod' from the 'specials' menu however when it came, it was evidently something from they had whipped out from Farmfoods frozen section- small, bad quality, a perfectly rectangular and cheap piece of fish. Certainly not anything you'd expect to receive at an English country pub and certainly not something you'd expect to be advertised the specials menu I could have easily cooked this myself at home for the fraction of the price. We were in a rush so ate what was in front of us, although in hindsight I wished I hadn't however when we paid the bill, I explained that we were dis-satisfied to the bar staff for the reasons as explained above. To make things worse, the guy said- 'oh we do actually have some of the beer battered cod, the chef must have got confused' and then proceeded to charge us full price. Absolutely disgusting! I'm would never willingly write a review this bad but the really was the most appalling experience and I would urge people to dine somewhere else.

A lovely location for a tea room, sadly we were let down by the food. The scones were warmed up to hide the fact they were stale and the jam was a cheap jelly. My son’s eggs were so under cooked the whites were still clear. My husband ordered a meat pie, we had to laugh as it was the smallest portion. Having said all that our waitress was lovely and very friendly. I don’t think we’ll be going back.

Lovely coffee and friendly staff but the toilet always needs a good clean, especially the bars to help disabled customers use the bathroom.
