Eight Bells in Welwyn Hatfield

Really quirky place in old Hatfield which I tripped over by accident. Oak beams and ales on tap, good family friendly atmosphere and fabulous service. I didn't try the food but hope to get back to the place soon.

Came to this Beautiful traditional Pub yesterday in Old Hatfield with Hubby and family. Were locals and live in central Hatfield Recently refurbished and clean and tidy throughout. Small quirky rooms you can just imagine Queen Elizabeth 1 enjoying a pint and enjoy the warmth of the beautiful Beer Garden..once weather chirps up! Doggy friendly and child friendly. Staff behind bar lovely especially the young lady who gave my son a chocolate egg which he loved along with his drink. Even our dog loved the chew. Highly recommend 🙂😉🍺

A friendly atmosphere in a building full of character. Great selection of beers including 3 cask ales, mostly from a local brewery. No food served but a food truck comes at weekends or you can bring in a takeaway, and they will provide crockery.

Decent, Olde World boozer. Well worth a visit if you are in the area. Resurrected by current management, so try to support them. Live music nights are particularly good. Stop by here if you possibly can.

Really nice atmosphere and drinks are reasonably priced. Also has a jukebox. Can get very cramped when it's busy.

Nice pub, nice beer, I’m not sure about the food or if they still do it, they were doing bar snacks, looked good but never had them. Would have given five stars. But for the sitting at the bar thing. It’s ok when it quiet but when it’s busy and there are people sitting Both sides of the bar you can’t get near to be served, unless you stand between two people who are talking, or stand in the hatch space. Keep one side of the bar free for service please.

Rather tiny and very cosy place, being there for donky years. Now - to benefit from a nice beer garden

Absolutely love going here for a pint, quaint, and homely feel. Also like the historic significance of the site.

Nice historical place i in the historical old town. Professional staff. Unfortunately hasn't hotel's room for sleep.

The bar staff are some of the best in the country and really make you feel like an old pal when you walk through their door. Great ales on offer and the wife enjoyed the wine!

Pub with good potential but hit and miss at the moment. Horse and groom much more consistent and better beer at the moment unfortunately. Could be a local gem but not there yet sadly. Holding out hope for improvement

It’s been updated over the years - but in my mind has lost something of its old Orginal character… the small pokey rooms and quirky seating- I understand why it’s been made larger and more convenient-as a kid I would sit tucked away in some corner and loved it. I’m glad to see it is still in operation as it would have been a travesty to see it pulled down - apart from Hatfield house up the road this is the only place to visit in Hatfield!

Miserable bar girl handful of customers no atmosphere and miserable vibe even on a lovely summers day. Avoid unlike you like being treated with disrespect and complete indifference. Horrible.

Such a welcoming pub, staff are always happy to see you and the Farr Brewery beers are great

By far my favourite pub in Hatfield. It has a great laid-back vibe and a very cozy beer garden. The kind of place you feel comfortable making conversation with strangers.

Dealt with surprise party of 20+ without warning very well. Beer good.

Went for a quiet drink on my own because I don't know anyone in the town and some of the younger crowd made me feel like I was undercover police, so either I was wrong for being on my own or they were all up to no good

Lovely, traditional, local pub. We live in the area and only recently visited for the first time. Becca was a warm host who gave us lots of insights into the history of the pub and information about the local brewers. It was so nice to see dogs welcome and regulars returning to be greeted on a first name basis.

Very well kept cask ale from Farr brewery, staff are friendly and welcoming too.

England lost on pens but our experience was amazing, moved a screen outside for us especially, drinks served fast and with a smile. Great pub, great staff - definitely back fast

Could be so much more for a beautiful old pub, too many years been unloved and I fear, now it's too far gone to save. The staff were pleasant and friendly and it appeared clean (or certainly should have been given the cleaning products and dusters strewn around the bar). The beer wasn't unpleasant but was certainly coming to the end of it's useful life. Not busy in the slightest and in its current guise I can't see much altering that unfortunately. I hope to be proved wrong in the future

Ancient pub, which could do with something added to make more character to the inside. Maybe some old pictures of Hatfield House, Old Hatfield or Charles Dickens. It does need to be a bit more inviting decor wise.

Today I visited the eight bells, I have received such fantastic service that I had to write a review. I was welcomed in by two female staff. Their names was Kayla and Jodie. They was extremely friendly and informative about current covid restrictions. Both females politely explained social distancing rules and explained how the table service worked. I was very nervous going to visit a pub as I haven’t been since lockdown. The staff made me feel at ease and was very professional. I am certainly returning to the Eight bells again. A massive thank you for serving us with a friendly smile. 5* review.

Lovely quaint old country pub a short walk from Hatfield house. You'll definitely need the strength from the beer to make your way back up the hill to the house though.

English old Tudor pub. Nice historic links, but unfortunately smells of wet dog because pets are allowed.

Comfortable, relaxed pub, no airs and graces and good, local beers

A definite improvement in atmosphere from the previous owners, with a loud juke box creating a happy atmosphere. A very limited choice of hand pulled beers though, and I'd want this to improve before I return.

This is an older worlde pub, about 400 years old with oak beams in historic old Hatfield. Great for a drink and a chat.

Nice place. Beams. Locals not fully knowledgeable about basic car mechanics but landlord seems sound.

Having read that the publican had displayed an A board outside his pub, asking people to use the pub or lose it, I travelled some distance to visit. The pub was not open and the A board had been wiped clean. Looking through the windows, it seemed a quaint place, divided into small sections, with a wooden floor. I vaguely remembered that I had passed it on a Sunday afternoon in summer after visiting Hatfield House a few years ago, and found it absolutely packed. Friday afternoon can be a busy time for some pubs. Shame this one was not open to take advantage.

We drink regularly here and would recommend it to anyone.

We were part of group: 14 people. The pub owners are very hospitable. Food and drink are terrific. Option to eat and drink outside in a grassy area was delightful.

Good cider, friendly staff and regulars, had the beer garden to myself.

Popped in on Sunday but we're in search of food so didn't stay. Really friendly reception and both staff and guests quick to recommend a local pub serving lunch. We were impressed by courtesy and will go back for a drink one day.

Great atmosphere with the locals and the guy that owns the bar was friendly and nice. However, not impressed by the woman behind the bar in that looked like she was chewing a wasp. She is was very rude and clearly had a very bad attitude. Shame for the pub, she made it an unpleasant evening.

Joli lieu. C'est un pub du 17ème siècle en gros. Le patron n'est pas des plus causants. La bière pression est bonne. J'y suis allé un après-midi midi. Il n'y avait pas grand monde. Le soir, avec de la musique, le pub doit être plus vivant.

A clean, fresh pint of bitter every visit. Unpretentious, friendly little boozer.

Fantastic pub, old style, people really friendly... The best in the city, for sure! Wood everywhere inside, low ceiling, 2 fireplaces (don't know if they will be light up in the winter), great and cosy atmosphere! Live music, events, a garden in the back, a dart station. Last but not least, a good selection of traditional and guest beers that change every 1 or 2 weeks. This is THE pub! Must try!

Went to this pub on Saturday night with a couple of friends from Essex. Had dinner elsewhere in Hatfield then came to this delightful pub. The ambience is lovely and to top it all they had live music on which was a bonus. My friends from Essex said if this was their local they would be in it every night of the week!

Great beer. Good, wholesome, home cooked food. Friendly welcoming hosts. A proper local. Recommended.
