To be honest... for such a well renowned pub in beautiful welwyn, we really expected a lot more. The barman who took our order at the table was lovely, and paid good attention to our drinks... the rest however was sadly average. The fish and chips was a small portion for the £18 they are charging... then the roast came out lukewarm... the service around the meal time was slow and wasn't the best. Sad really as for a 65 quid meal, it's not cheap and the food and service was lacking

Excellent experience. My wife is vegan and gluten free and the Wellington had lots of choice for her, which is unusual. The atmosphere was great, the service was amazing and the food was delicious. We were so impressed that we booked a table for their Christmas offerings on Dec 22nd. Loved it.

We needed somewhere to stay for the weekend whilst visiting friends and family to celebrate my birthday and also attend a wedding reception on the Saturday night. On arrival we were greeted at the bar of this 17th century inn, and then shown our room in the loft of this beautiful building. The room was great! Comfy bed, good bath and shower with views across the village church, village and beyond. They had also gone the extra mile and got me a birthday card and a box of chocolates.. which I really appreciated as turning 50 I find you need as much attention ad you can get :) We weren’t there on the Friday night which was a shame as they had a special Paella night, and from the smells coming from the courtyard ilI am sure we missed a great evening. They had a Vegan version too!!! A country village pub with a Vegan paella on offer gets too marks from me - great work. Breakfast When we asked what was included within our B&B price the waiter said everything! Choose anything you want from the menu!?!?!?! Huh? What? Yep.. have whatever you want? Nursing a hangover I did think about having a Bloody Mary but opted for the full vege English, a spicy tomato juice (Toms with Tabasco on the side - amazing!!) and a double espresso. Boom! So much food and eating whilst watching the villagers go about their Saturday morning business (popping to bakers, church, walking dogs etc) out of the expansive glass windows to the street was perfect. Lunch A table for 8. In its own little cubby area in the pub. We sat from 1:00 - 7pm the time we had to go to the wedding reception. We all had different meals, different times, different drinks, different levels of noise through the afternoon and the staff could not have made us all feel any more welcome. There really is nothing like hanging out with friends all afternoon in an English country pub. Top marks again. I now know where I will stay every time I need my English Country fix. Thank you to all of the team.

Such a terrible shame that this lovely venue is so inconsistent. Four of us had brunch yesterday, the food just scraped a poor average but the service was hopeless. I had to get up three times to find a waitress. And just to add salt to the wound I had to get up to request the bill and found all three staff chatting happily by the bar. Never sure whether this type of behaviour is caused by poor staff or just poor training by the owners. Hey ho, we will not be returning.

Poor. Went for a family Saturday lunch. The service was polite but glacial…everything involved a long wait. In fairness, we did order a somewhat disjointed meal with a mix of appetites meaning we had some people with starters, some without and some people having a starter as a main but given The Wellington offered three different menus to choose from that really shouldn’t be unexpected. We ordered some simple nibbles that took more than 45 minutes to arrive, our main courses didn’t hit the table until a full hour after we ordered. The food was unexceptional, dry battered fish, lukewarm chips, overcooked buttermilk chicken and bacon wraps. Couldn’t be bothered to complain as the whole thing had taken so long and I didn’t want to upset the rest of the party. At more than £30/head for little more than snacks and a couple of round of drinks it can’t be considered good value.

We popped in to this restaurant for a light lunch. What a disappointment. On arrival, the waitress said she would be back very shortly, but when she didn’t appear after 15 minutes , I had to go and ask for our orders to be taken. I had the smoked haddock and egg with spinach. As it was in a stack, I assumed that the skin had been taken off the haddock and the bones removed. That was not the case. Neither haddock nor the egg were very warm and the spinach portion was so small as to be very barely discernible. My partner had an open crayfish sandwich. Again, it was poor and an additional £3 was charged for some substandard chips. The next day we had a very good roast beef lunch at a pub a few miles away which cost almost the same price

The room we stayed in (room 2) was spectacular, one of the best bathroom designs we have seen in a long time! Disappointing. We used to love this place and it was always on our list of regular ‘go- to’ restaurants for good quality food, however sadly it has gone downhill. We booked for Xmas last year 2022 with the family which was a disaster. My partner insisted on giving them another chance; as the food did used to be so good. Subsequently, we visited around another 4 times since, but every time has been a disappointment. This week was no different and as a result we won’t be returning unless they relaunch under new management. It feels like management have just ‘let the restaurant go’, run out of money or just lost interest in the business which is sad. There is only one person working front of house; which means no-body at the bar or entrance to greet you upon arrival. We’re left hanging around the front for a very long time before actively seeking the one staff member to check in. Eventually another team member clocks on to assist; but by then we are already tiered of the poor service. The poor guy on his own was good bless him, trying his best rushing around to see people in, take drinks orders, prepare said drinks behind bar and take food orders and serve and clear away!! Even though there were only around three tables of diners at a his time; this was still too much to expect one guy to manage efficiently. The carpet has never been cleaned in years, it’s filthy. The walls are grubby, the tables sticky, the toilets are disgusting , the decor tired, the fire not lit even though it’s freezing outside; it just felt cold and unwelcoming. The place lacks luster / TLC and the food is sub standard especially for the prices they charge, The fillet steak tough as old boots and the fish smelt old. The service almost non existent, so slow, we waited for so long to get our meals we gave up by dessert and so didn’t order one. We both remarked that it feels like the owners have just given up, or can’t be bothered anymore… or perhaps it’s just very poorly managed. Either way It would be a real shame if this place closed down.l but I can’t see it carrying on much longer in this capacity,

I stay and eat at The Wellington on a regular basis and honestly couldn’t speak highly enough of Ellie, Callum, Issac and the rest of the team. The scallops are some of the best I’ve had, tend to be pretty similar each week with pea puree and a rotating meat - chorizo, palma ham and pancetta which are always delicious! I’ve also had the beef wellington (lovely!) chicken supreme, duck, beef ragu, and various breakfasts. I’ve only ever not liked one, which I think was due to the herbs but they changed it without question. Rooms are lovely with a super comfortable bed, nespresso coffee machine, and roll top bath. Packed full of character and charm. Note; it is an old building so you do hear outside noise (and bellringing if you visit on a Tuesday or Sunday) however they do provide ear plugs and you get used to it! Would highly recommend 🩷 it’s my favourite place to stay.

Beautiful building, comfortable good bar staff and waitress's. But lacking in fine details.... Table that was allocated to us was "sticky" from what turned out to be poor varnish. Management knew about it BUT still put paying customers onto a table that they stuck to, damaging clothing and spoiling a special night. Management need to spend time with staff, showing how to serve a guest. Customer service is dying in this industry and it is one thing that will save and help expand a business. The food quality was OK, but the chef wanted to present a picture on a plate before ensuring the ingredients where cooked and flavoured well. Nice evening but could be Oh so better

We had a meal here to celebrate a family birthday. Good service, lovely atmosphere, food took a little too long to arrive but it was worth the wait! Look forward to returning...
