Food was good in pleasant surroundings. Service had been good but took a downturn when we asked for another piece of toast only to be told no as kitchen was shut now for breakfast! It was just after 11am and find it hard to believe none able to put a slice of bread in a toaster!

This was our 3rd visit, and each time we have requested a different room. Each stay has been as wonderful as the last, and the next time (February) we will request one of the remaining rooms we have yet to stay in. Unfortunatley we are yet to have dinner at the Inn, but the breakfast is amazing and the staff have always been kind, caring and friendly. Hence why we came back again and again. There were a couple of things that were out of the control of the staff that proved a little bit of a nuisance, the length and loudness of the church bells for example, with no double glazing its loud, but you can't have DG on such a beautiful building, and after the bells woke us up from our slumber, we then had to endure the sound of a ukulele or mandolin being "practised" in the room below us, this was a little torturous 🤪 and so we made a quick exit to breakfast. Looking forward to our next visit. My photos are of rooms from previous stays and breakfast from this stay.

Firstly I hope to review this review once I have heard back from my email sent to the team at The Wellington. I booked the honey moon suit for the evening of our wedding day. Originally I booked only one night, I booked this particular room after being given a tour of all rooms and I booked this room a full 19 months ahead of the big day. 3 months prior to the day I called and booked an additional night in the same room to extend our mini moon. All good no issues. Sadly as soon as I arrived and looked at the number on our key tag my heart sank. I knew it was the wrong room. I had checked us in via the link in the email and my father had taken our bags and collected our key on our behalf as we were but at our reception - he want to know and therefore raised no questions. It was gone midnight, I was tired and so we stayed in the room we had been mistakenly given. The room was beautiful - as they all are there but it wasn’t the room I chose and booked so far in advance. Also directly at the top of the stairs that all guests use to access the room so very noisy and not an intimate feeling inside of the room. In the morning it was raised with staff by my sister who had also stayed with them. She was advised that the bride and groom had stayed in the honeymoon suit. This added insult to injury for me. Another bride and groom had ‘my’ room. After this I wasn’t reached out to by staff to offer an apology or seek more information. Was this my responsibility after they had been advised of a grave mistake? We decided as the bubble had already been bust and we had so many bags and bits already in the other room we’d just stay and take the hit and discus our disappointment and issue upon check out. Again sadly little concern or proactive investigation was offered. I’d like the wellington to look into their booking dates and room selection to see how this happened and feed back to me. We didn’t get to stay in the room we booked - well in advance, our room was given away. Sad and disappointed.

To be honest... for such a well renowned pub in beautiful welwyn, we really expected a lot more. The barman who took our order at the table was lovely, and paid good attention to our drinks... the rest however was sadly average. The fish and chips was a small portion for the £18 they are charging... then the roast came out lukewarm... the service around the meal time was slow and wasn't the best. We needed somewhere to stay for the weekend whilst visiting friends and family to celebrate my birthday and also attend a wedding reception on the Saturday night. On arrival we were greeted at the bar of this 17th century inn, and then shown our room in the loft of this beautiful building. The room was great! Comfy bed, good bath and shower with views across the village church, village and beyond. They had also gone the extra mile and got me a birthday card and a box of chocolates.. which I really appreciated as turning 50 I find you need as much attention ad you can get :) We weren’t there on the Friday night which was a shame as they had a special Paella night, and from the smells coming from the courtyard ilI am sure we missed a great evening. They had a Vegan version too!!! A country village pub with a Vegan paella on offer gets too marks from me - great work. Breakfast When we asked what was included within our B&B price the waiter said everything! Choose anything you want from the menu!?!?!?! Huh? What? Yep.. have whatever you want? Nursing a hangover I did think about having a Bloody Mary but opted for the full vege English, a spicy tomato juice (Toms with Tabasco on the side - amazing!!) and a double espresso. Boom! So much food and eating whilst watching the villagers go about their Saturday morning business (popping to bakers, church, walking dogs etc) out of the expansive glass windows to the street was perfect. Lunch A table for 8. In its own little cubby area in the pub. We sat from 1:00 - 7pm the time we had to go to the wedding reception. We all had different meals, different times, different drinks, different levels of noise through the afternoon and the staff could not have made us all feel any more welcome. There really is nothing like hanging out with friends all afternoon in an English country pub. Top marks again. I now know where I will stay every time I need my English Country fix. Thank you to all of the team.

I had to get up three times to find a waitress. And just to add salt to the wound I had to get up to request the bill and found all three staff chatting happily by the bar. Poor. Went for a family Saturday lunch. The service was polite but glacial…everything involved a long wait. In fairness, we did order a somewhat disjointed meal with a mix of appetites meaning we had some people with starters, some without and some people having a starter as a main but given The Wellington offered three different menus to choose from that really shouldn’t be unexpected. We ordered some simple nibbles that took more than 45 minutes to arrive, our main courses didn’t hit the table until a full hour after we ordered. The food was unexceptional, dry battered fish, lukewarm chips, overcooked buttermilk chicken and bacon wraps. Couldn’t be bothered to complain as the whole thing had taken so long and I didn’t want to upset the rest of the party. At more than £30/head for little more than snacks and a couple of round of drinks it can’t be considered good value.

We popped in to this restaurant for a light lunch. What a disappointment. On arrival, the waitress said she would be back very shortly, but when she didn’t appear after 15 minutes , I had to go and ask for our orders to be taken. I had the smoked haddock and egg with spinach. As it was in a stack, I assumed that the skin had been taken off the haddock and the bones removed. That was not the case. Neither haddock nor the egg were very warm and the spinach portion was so small as to be very barely discernible. My partner had an open crayfish sandwich. Again, it was poor and an additional £3 was charged for some substandard chips. The next day we had a very good roast beef lunch at a pub a few miles away which cost almost the same price

We went for our wedding anniversary and had a really lovely romantic evening. The venue is clean and well set out and furnished with calm and relaxed ambience. We had the signature burgers and delicious desserts. All staff delightful and helpful - a real 5 star experience for a relaxed night early weekday evening - could not recommend more highly. Thank you for the treat too Wellington - very much appreciated!

My 3rd stay at the Wellington, and it still amazes me - the oldest building where I've ever spent the night - built in 1352! It's very atmospheric and rooms are quirky and I love it. The bed was very comfortable, nice bathroom accessories. Staff are helpful and kind, breakfast was delicious. Good car park too. All in all it's great location in Welwyn Village.

Never been into a so-called 'traditional' pub to be greeted as though it was a pain that we had even turned up. It was the first Saturday of the New Year and aside from the barmaid (possibly landlady but unlikely due to her huffing and puffing that she had to get up to serve us) there was only 3 other people there plus 2 dogs. I don't have an issue with dogs except when they cock their leg to wee inside the pub next to where we're sitting. Ordered hot chocolate which was luke warm and very watery, other half had a lager which was ok. Barmaid made zero attempt to make conversation with us and just made us feel extremely unwelcome. Would I recommend it - never. Head to the Eight Bells instead. Far more welcoming, much cleaner inside and a better variety of drinks.

What a lovely place to have a pint and chat with a few locals (all of them regulars at this place!) Was too late to taste the kitchen. The place claims to be really old and all looking behind to the glorious days of Old Hatfield, before it became the quiet town of today.

Excellent pub with a brilliant vibe on Christmas Eve! Despite being very busy, the staff were marvellous!
